2009 North Florida PGA Amateur of the Year

There are ups and downs to everything in life and when things are going south, there are different ways to get through it. It could be a proverb that helps you out such as: “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” “The early worm is the first one eaten (or something like that).” It could be a poem:When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill, When the funds are low and the debts are high And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don’t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out; Don’t give up though the pace seems slow-- You may succeed with another blow, Success is failure turned inside out-- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit-- It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit. Edgar A. Guest In my case, it is the people who have been and continue to be clos-est to me. I am so thankful for those who kept me going during some of my darkest hours. They include: Lynn Pelham, who passed away ten years ago, was a photo-journal-ist for “Life,” “People” and “Florida Golf Central.” Even in his advanced years, Lynn’s perseverance was inspiring and his motto, “Keep the faith,” still has great meaning to me. Rick Harris, who has organized senior golf events for many years, advises me as he did as a high school guidance counselor. His energy and willingness to help is just amazing. Frank Rohter, my 88 year young close friend, recently authored the book, “Ageing with Happiness.” Spending time with him and listening to his positive outlook on life is truly inspirational. Debbi Westbrook has given me so much advice on parenting, rela-tionships and business over the years, I don’t know how to thank her. I will say this, if I have an ‘anxiety attack’ in the middle of the night, I call DEBBI WESTBROOK and I love her for that. Melahn Cable, who designs the magazine, treats it like it is her own. Her creativeness, attention to detail and patience is the reason why “Florida Golf Central” is a success! Hopefully you have a person or people who help you when you’re not at the ‘top of your game’. If you don’t think you do, I’d like to give you one bit of advice. Instead of sticking your head in the sand(trap) when the wind is blowing in your face, seek out advice from those who you love and respect. It has worked miracles for me!

Everybody join us in Myrtle beach at the end August!

Ponte Vedra, Fla.– Nocatee, North Florida’s fastest-growing master-plan-ned community, will begin construction of a zipline over the community’s Splash Water Park this week. The zipline will start on the top platform of the Rip Tide Slide Tower, cross over the park’s lazy river and volleyball courts, and end on the park’s western side. The PARC Group, Nocatee’s master developer, expects the 300-foot-long zipline to open by the end of July. It is the latest addition to Nocatee’s wide range of recreational amenities, which include an extensive network of nature trails, eco-friendly parks, sports facili-ties, fitness clubs, children’s playgro-unds, and more. Nocatee’s newest adventure will enable residents and visitors to soar above one of Nocatee’s most popular amenities, the Splash Water Park. In addition to the 30-foot-high Rip Tide Slide Tower—North Florida’s highest water-slide tower—the park’s fea-tures include a shallow-access pool, interactive playground, lagoon pool, slow-moving lazy river, and rapid-tide whirlpool. “We are constantly looking for ways to make life at Nocatee a truly unique experience,” said Rick Ray, Managing Partner of The PARC Group. “Not only will our zipline be a thrilling ride, but it will offer an amazing bird’s-eye view of the park below. We’re excited to offer this experience to our residents.”

Ziplines—elevated cable rides that zip harnessed riders downward—have been gaining popularity over the past few years, with hundreds being built across the nation. While they first began as a way to experience rainfo-rests in Costa Rica and South American countries, following the popularity of the temporary zipline at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, urban zipline construc-tion soared. Built by leading zipline provider Vertical Reality, Nocatee’s zipline is de-signed to exceed United States safety and engineering standards and adhere to the guidelines set by the Professio-nal Ropes Course Association, which establishes the norms and standards that govern all ziplines built in the United States. Vertical Reality’s custo-mers include the International Olympic Committee, Royal Caribbean, SeaWorld, YMCA, ESPN, Universal Studios, Six Flags, and the National Guard. Nocatee’s zipline will be constructed of an interwoven polyester cable that is stronger than traditional steel cables, with a breaking strength of 11 tons. A magnetic braking system will stop zipline riders safely and comfortably, with no abrupt jerking. In 2011, Nocatee was named one of the top 15 fastest-growing master-plan-ned communities in the United States. To learn more about the Nocatee lifestyle, call 1-800-Nocatee or visit www.Nocatee.com.

Nocatee to Build Zipline Over Water Park Fort Myers, Fla.– As the world prepares for the 2012 Olympics in London, officials of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are planning for the return of golf to the games. After more than a century, golf will return to the Olympics and Art of the Olympians will celebrate this historic occasion with the College of Life Foundation Premiere Olympian Golf Classic. To be played Dec. 2 to 4, 2012 at The Colony Golf & Country Club in Bonita Springs, Fla., the tournament will feature Olympians, professional golfers and athletes paired with amateurs in a fundraiser for Art of the Olympians Foundation Inc., the Fort Myers-based museum and gallery. With more than 200 countries participating in the games, the impact of Olympic golf will be felt all over the world, affording many countries that have never had the opportunity a chance to grow the sport. Golf was last played in the 1900 and 1904 games. “This historic journey will bring together iconic Olympians, golfers, celebrities, as well as business leaders in support of this philanthropic endeavor,” said Bob Beamon, AOTO CEO and 1968 Olympic gold medalist. “The Premiere Olympian Golf Classic will blend sports while enriching the lives of young people by sustaining AOTO programs of art, sport and culture through the 2016 Olympic Games and beyond.” Money raised will support the nonprofit Art of the Olympians Foundation in promoting the highest ideals of humanity with their creative talents through the sport/art relationship by providing programs of art, education, sport and cultural outreach to inspire the world. The exclusive event is slated to include 29 foursomes, plus pros. Entry fees begin at $5,000 which includes the practice round, pairing party and auction, and tournament plus food and beverage. The title sponsor of the inaugural tournament is College of Life Foundation Inc. For additional information, call 239-332-5055 or visit www.artoftheolympians.org. Art of the Olympians is located at 1300 Hendry Street, on the waterfront in downtown Fort Myers.

The U.S. Golf Manufacturers Anti-

Counterfeiting Working Group today

announced the completion of an-

other successful raid of an extensive

China-based counterfeit operation

resulting in the seizure of nearly

5,000 fake golf products. In total, the

group has worked with Chinese offi-

cials to identify and seize more than

12,000 counterfeit products during

2012.

On May 11, based upon a lead sup-

plied by the Golf Group, Chinese of-

ficials raided the Oriental Golf Store

in Dongguan City along with two as-

sociated warehouses and an assem-

bly workshop. In addition to seizing

the fake golf products, the officials

confiscated three sets of assembling

machines and arrested the owners of

the store.

“Government support and en-

forcement against these criminals is

paramount in sending a strong anti-

counterfeiting message,” said Christa

McNamara, Director of Corporate

Communications for TaylorMade-

adidas Golf. “We will continue our

campaign to educate consumers

about counterfeiting and as long as

there are counterfeiters out there tak-

ing advantage of consumers, we’ll be

working with government officials to

bring these counterfeiters to justice.”

“We make a substantial investment

each year to develop authentic and

innovative equipment that allows

golfers to perform at their best and

achieve their goals,” said Tim Buck-

man, Vice President of Global Commu-

nications for Callaway Golf. “Coun-

terfeit clubs are made with shoddy

materials, very often in dreadful and

unsafe conditions, and the result

is a terrible product that harms the

golfer’s bank account and score card.

Every successful raid is another step

forward in this ongoing battle that is

hurting our sport.”

golf clubs and products can be found

The Miami Dolphins Foundation hosted its largest annual event

featuring current players, alumni and

cheerleaders, FinsWeekend, on May

17-19, 2012 throughout South Florida.

The three-day extravaganza featured

an exciting weekend of golf, fishing

and celebrities. In all, FinsWeekend

raised more than $600,000 for the

Miami Dolphins Foundation, whose

mission is devoted to providing and

supporting signature education, health,

youth athletic programs and volunteer

activities that inspire and engage

communities throughout Florida.

“This is such a unique event,” Miami

Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said. “I don’t

think there is anything like it in sports.

It fits our community and we are so

fortunate to have so many people

that volunteer their time and take a

leadership role in generating funds

for the Miami Dolphins foundation.

This raises money for us to provide

the financial basis for us to do things

in the community throughout the

year. This puts us in a position to fulfill

the commitment we have to make a

difference in the community.”

Now in its 16th year, FinsWeekend has

grown into the signature fundraising

event for the Dolphins Foundation.

The festivities began on Thursday,

May 17, with the Celebrity Draw Party,

presented by Sun Life Financial in the

Harry Soffer room at Turnberry Isle

Miami. The party included cocktails,

hors d’oeuvres and interactive games

such as putting, chipping, pitch shot and

bunker shot for unique prizes.

On Friday, May 18, celebrities,

Dolphins players and alumni hit the

greens at Turnberry Isle Miami’s award-

winning golf course for the FinsWeekend

Golf Tournament. Former Dolphins

tight end Jed Weaver and the JM Lexus

Number 2 team were tied with former

Dolphins wide receiver James McKnight

and the Tony Galvin team after the 18-

hole shamble format. Both teams scored

55 and the tiebreaker was settled on

the No. 4 hole. The golf tournament was

followed by an awards luncheon.

Later that evening, the popular Hook

& Tackle Captain’s Party took place at

the Miami Beach Marina, which featured

entertainment and a silent auction. At

the event, the Dolphins announced its

2011 team award winners. Quarterback

Matt Moore was named the Dan Marino

Most Valuable Player Award winner.

Linebacker Karlos Dansby won the

team’s Don Shula Leadership Award,

while kicker Dan Carpenter and punter

Brandon Fields took home the Nat Moore

Community Service Award.

The following morning, on Saturday,

May 19, amateur and professional

anglers gathered at the Miami Beach

Marina for the Miami Dolphins

Foundation Fishing Tournament,

presented by Alterna Financial.

Participants enjoyed a day of offshore

fishing accompanied by Dolphins players

and alumni. In the afternoon, all fishing

participants got together for the “Hooters

Weigh-in” where the crew of O-Sea-D

turned in 195.4 pounds of fish to take

home the trophy, with Bouncers Dusky

33 coming in with 147.6 pounds. Billin

Office finished third with an even 100

pounds. Captain Michael Vera, Jorge

Villar, Eduardo Gonzalez and Jose Lopez

made up the crew of the winning boa

and won a trip for four on the team

charter to a regular season Dolphins

away game. Later that evening, attendees

gathered for the HMY/Contender Awards

Ceremony. At the event, major items

were auctioned including a jet ride

with four (4) 2013 Super Bowl tickets

sponsored by Sky Limo and a 21 foot

Contender with a Mercury Engine.

Controlling your ball and your ball flight are crucial in golf — especially in windy conditions or when you find yourself in a tough spot outside of the fairway. That’s why it’s important to learn how to have a ¾ swing. With a ¾ swing, you put less spin on the ball, so the ball flies straighter and is less affected by the wind. When you work on this, it’s going to help you feel the impact position with your chest more over the ball.

How to do it You want to start by narrowing your stance slightly. This will put the ball a little more back in your stance with a little more weight on your left side. When you go to make your back swing, the resistance of your hips, with not turning into your right side as much, shortens the backswing. From the top you will just rotate through, getting the clubface nice

and square, and then hold your finish. Your arms and upper body will control your lower half, and your weight will shift and stay there. Your ball will fly lower and straighter and give you confidence of you controlling the ball and not letting it control you. This is a really simple swing that can help you improve your golf game, so work on it. You’re going to see great results.

Waldorf Astoria Orlando is celebrat-ing summer with Enchanted Evenings, running weekends June 1 through Sept. 4, 2012. Twilight is a magical time during this summer-long schedule of special events for all guests staying at Waldorf Astoria Orlando, located inside the gates of Walt Disney World® Resort. The summer-long schedule for Enchanted Evenings includes ongoing events, as well as special activities throughout the season. This year, the resort will host the Waldorf Astoria Enchanted Glow at sunset on Friday and Saturday eve-nings, featuring a brilliant display of Chinese wish lanterns in the resort pool. Guests will have opportunity to purchase and decorate their own

wish lantern during the day (11am till dusk), to be set afloat that evening at 9pm. According to legend, the wish will be granted when the lanterns is set afloat that evening, creating a beautiful candle-lit spectacle. Waldorf Astoria Orlando has put the destination on the map for luxury trav-elers. Nestled in a nature preserve and conveniently located inside the gates of Walt Disney World, the resort is a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of neighboring theme parks. Cara Golds-bury, author of Luxury Guide to Disney World, calls it “stunningly impressive.” “Swank and sophisticated,” she con-tinued, “Waldorf Astoria has redefined local luxury in Orlando.” The hotel is part of a unique resort complex that also features the top-rated Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek and Waldorf Astoria Golf Club, the cham-pionship golf course artfully designed by Rees Jones, which has been named one of the most “playable” courses in the crowded Florida market by two national golf magazines. Waldorf Astoria Orlando infuses

timeless Jazz Age-elegance from The Waldorf Astoria in New York City, with the vibrant and modern ambiance of Florida. It features 498 guest rooms and suites with sweeping vistas of Walt Disney World and the Bonnet Creek na-ture preserve. The resort’s 171 stunning suites have been called “the best rooms in all of Central Florida.” Golf Channel travel writer Brandon Tucker called the resort “an exclusive playground for the adult-minded trav-eler.” It includes re-imagined versions of famed New York City restaurants include Bull & Bear, Peacock Alley, and Oscar’s. Bull & Bear, the hotel’s signature restaurant, was named Best Fine Dining by Orlando Home & Leisure magazine in its elusive Silver Spoon Awards issue. The hotel’s award-win-ning spa, which has been profiled by both American Spa and Spa magazines, offers treatments from Guerlain, the legendary Parisian fragrance house. We recently had the pleasure of visiting the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island shortly after the completion of their 444 room enhancements. The seaside resort’s rooms were updated with a new coastal environment, and as usual with Ritz Carlton, there were no disappointments in the property updates. The room enhancement completed a six year, $65 million investment, which also included the award- winning Spa and The Talbot Ballroom, which is now the largest meeting space in the region. The purpose of the update was to enhance the guest’s experience, coupled with the vision to capture a sense of place that is comfortable and elegant, and I must admit that the update was a complete success.

The updates include the coastal design by Wilson Associates, and were inspired by tide lines that mark the dune-lined barrier island beach. The guest is greeted with dark mahogany wood flooring at the entry, resembling the wet sand and brown reeds pushed to shore at high tide. A carpet design evokes an image of wind-swept sand leads to the dramatic ceiling to floor balcony doors overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. And there’s also something that everyone should experience as a couple when visiting the property, it’s known as the romantic fire for two. Nestled against

the dunes with Adirondack chairs, s’mores, hot chocolate, a stargazer’s map, telescope and warm blankets to cuddle in the cool beach air; the fire by the dunes has been the romantic setting of a marriage proposal presented on a wine label. The fires are available Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and will not disappoint. And speaking of not disappointing; the Salt Restaurant is a phenomenal experience, and should not be missed. From the ambiance to the food and wine pairings, Salt takes simple elements from the earth and sea, properly seasons, artfully prepares and serves them in a contemporary coastal setting. Seasonal Contemporary American menus are created by Chef de Cuisine Richard Laughlin and showcase brilliantly-flavorful food. Salt uses 35 salts harvested globally as foundation salts and infuses flavors for menu items; and the room has a sophisticated design and elegant oceanfront ambience. The Salt Shop is so very cool as well, and offers tasting experiences daily from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM. The time you spend learning and tasting is worth every minute of the

experience, and also provides a chance meet and greet others staying on property, which you will more than likely see again throughout your stay. Participants will discover the secrets of infusing herbs, citrus and other flavors into gourmet salts, as well as have the opportunity to taste their favorites. Everyone is invited to sample salts from all over the world and

learn how the Salt restaurant chefs use the salts to enhance the flavors of their popular contemporary American menu. The Salt Shop features an extensive selection of infused and foundation salts, the famous Salt caramel, and other confections plus beautiful salt lamps and candles. And the there’s the Golf Club of Amelia Island; a private club catering to the exclusive surrounding community of Summer Beach. The course is a classic parkland layout that blends the natural woodlands and wetlands, and features breathtaking landscape, framed by the elegant ancient oaks. The course is meticulously maintained throughout, and strategic bunkering and the shifting ocean breeze ensure that each round provides a new and challenging experience. The Golf Club of Amelia Island golf shop offers the finest in golf equipment, accessories and apparel. The club house dining room offers a tempting choice of favorites, while the Legends Lounge offers beverage service in a relaxed setting. Complete practice facilities are available, as are rental clubs by Ping. Individual as well as group instruction may be arranged through the club’s PGA Professional staff. Last, but in no way least, is the Spa at Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The spa offers an atmosphere of coastal simplicity and serenity that evokes an overwhelming sense of relaxation, comfort and well-being. You can’t help but be relaxed and refreshed after utilization of the state-of-the-art, $16.4 million spa. The spa is housed in a wing that opened in 2006, featuring 27,500 square feet of indoor space and 5,000 square feet outdoors, and will entice you to return as often as possible. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is located just off the coast of Northeast Florida on an untainted, dune-lined Atlantic beach, and as you can see, is the perfect destination for a luxurious getaway including golf, food, wine, relaxation, and new friends. What a combination!

I’m Shannon Lynch, newly of Green Gazelle Marketing, not to be confused with Florida Golf Central’s Editor-in-Chief Shannon Coates. I have been friends with Nick and Greg going on four years now, since we all met working at Rollins’ student newspaper, The Sandspur. (If you missed out on their article last issue, chek it out online on FloridaGolfCentral.com.) They founded Green Gazelle Marketing this past year while I was finishing my senior year at Rollins. I graduated in May with a theatre degree in hand, but no sure plan in mind for what to do next, so I took up my normal summer job lifeguarding. As Green Gazelle expanded and sought to continue, they decided to bring in a few more hands to ensure no drop-off in effectiveness or personal service, which is where I entered the picture as a part of GGM and, consequently, Florida Golf Central. Thanks to my focus on social media and a background in publishing, I was hired to the team as FGC’s social media account manager. The only slight hiccup in the plan was that I didn’t really know anything about golf at the time, and, to be honest, am still trying to learn and adjust to it all. Terrie promises me we’ll have to go out and play soon. I’m hoping it goes

better than the birthday party I had at a mini-golf course in middle school, when I got mad that I came in last at my own party. Come visit me and keep up with my golf learning curve, and get all of FGC’s news updates on the Florida Golf Central Facebook page, which I will continue to update, and Twitter account (@flgolfcentral) which I will also soon be managing.

You probably know by now that social media is integral to a thriving company, and that all that tweetbook and spaceface nonsense can target and engage a demographic, provide unparalleled publicity, and and disseminate information on sales or news instantly; but, did you know that the time of day of these updates is directly linked to their effectiveness? Holding off for a few hours on a particularly clever tweet or announcement of a good deal you’re offering can impact how many of your fans see it, how they receive it, and how effective it is. Take Facebook: the amount of news feeds your post appears on depends on the amount of activity your post receives, which depends on who sees it initially. And on Twitter, you want to post while your audience is on because odds are they won’t be searching through your archived tweets, but reacting to new updates on their feed. Compounding that, there are programs that you can (and we do) use to place a scheduled time-delay on the release of such updates, to ensure that they come out when you want them even if you can’t be at a computer at that time. Tactics like these can help ensure that you get the best return on (an already very limited) investment when using social media, and give your business an edge over the competition.

For George Wallace and his two sons, Jonathan and Christopher, the Golf Academy of America is more than a place where golf instruction is taught and career paths are found. For the Wallaces, the two-year golf school they attend in Myrtle Beach, S.C., is a place where their torn lives are slowly being knitted back together. After just one semester in the school program, where learning includes the goal of becoming a better golfer, the three have improved their games dramatically. And securing a mean-ingful job in the golf industry in two years would seem like winning golf’s Grand Slam after what they have been through. The young men are in their late 20s and both have been discharged from military service due to injuries received in Iraq. And the father lost his job last year at a nuclear power plant near Ai-ken, S.C., after 30 years of employment as part of a downsizing that took the workforce from a high of 34,000 jobs to just 11,000. “This is the first time since 2000 that all three of us are under the same roof in favorable conditions,” said George Wallace, 57, who was a promising baseball player before he injured his throwing arm. “The last 12 years we have really had our share of hurdles, and both of my kids now deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “Golf has become part of our therapy, both individually and collectively. We’re

getting our lives back, little by little.” Chris Wallace, 29, served in the Army for 10 years until 2010 and endured some of the worst atrocities of the Iraqi war. Jonathan, 26, was a military police officer who worked with the Secret Service through 2011 before he suffered a leg injury. His father argued with the Veterans Administration for years to get Chris the special medical attention he need-ed. But that only came after a personal correspondence with Hillary Clinton, then a New York senator. “I had pretty much given up until my daughter was born in 2008,” Chris said. She brought me back to life. I didn’t care if I lived or died, but she gave me something to live for. And now golf has given me a new purpose, something just for me. “I was a soldier and that’s all I knew since high school, and when they took that away from me after I was injured it crushed me. They just threw me away. It took a long time to get past that.” He still fights personal battles caused by two inoperable brain tumors the size of golf balls that remain; reminders of his ordeal. He deals with depres-sion, powerful flashbacks and violent seizures from time to time, and he is on his second divorce. Both he and Jonathan have overcome alcohol addic-tion as well. Chris now has adopted the loud clothing style that his golf idol John Daly wears and looks forward to trim-ming more strokes off his game.

“It kind of started as a joke, and then it became a challenge,” Chris said. He suggested they attend Golf Academy of America after seeing an advertisement on the Golf Channel. “It feels like it was meant to be that all of us are now together here. We’re still a family, and that’s nice. Our dad is our best friend, and he’s helped us through a lot. We’re proud of him for being here.” Myrtle Beach is one of five locations nationwide for the Golf Academy of America (GAA), which offers the largest and longest-running two-year college program designed to place students in the golf industry. It has a placement rate of better than 81 percent. George is thinking he might use his new education to pursue a job as a clubfitter. Jonathan, a gregarious and affable sort, is perfectly suited for a sales position. Chris, who has lost 100 pounds but is still a big man at 6’3” and 255 pounds, would like to be a profes-sional golfer. That will be a challenge for Chris, but the simple fact that he sees a brighter future is encouraging. “Everybody can say that I’ll never be a professional golfer, but I have a dream of going to Q School,” Chris said. “And who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do?” The challenge of golf seems simple after what the Wallaces have been through. player development

A little background on myself, I graduated from the Professional Golf Management Program at Campbell University and earned a degree in Business Administra-tion in 2004 and became a PGA Class A Golf Professional in 2005. I have been teaching golf for over 13 years and finish-ing up my second school year teaching special needs children. I owe much of my success in teaching golf to the many Golf Digest Top 50 Golf Instructors that mentored me. I also played profession-ally after college for 3 years. Learning about the autistic spectrum and how these incredible children learn differently than most other children has helped me become a better more creative golf instructor. Autistic children learn best by information being explained in the simplest way possible. It is neces-sary to be able to explain the same thing different simple ways until one of the ways “clicks” with their brain. Autistic students also learn through visual aids like pictures and videos. The use of train-ing aids also helps them understand and complete everyday tasks that many of us take for granted. I use all of these meth-ods and more to teach golf to my “other students.” I believe most people can become good golfers, just as most autistic students make amazing improvements after receiving the correct instruction, in the correct way, at their own unique pace. During my golf lessons, I begin every new student with a 10 minute conversa-tion learning about their golfing history, golfing goals, athletic ability, past injuries, practice time, etc. Without this impor-tant information no golf instructor is able to improve their student to his/her highest potential. Based on the informa-tion the student gives me and what their current swing looks like; I start to build a repeatable swing that fits their body type, athletic ability, and goals. Golf takes some time to achieve the correct muscle memory and build consistence. There are just too many different things to learn and experience. Using the drills from my lessons at home will help speed up this process.

The biggest mistake I see is not enough people practicing from 60 yards and in. This is where the majority of golf shots are taken during a round. This is why people are not improving at the rate they expect or want. So why don’t more people practice their short game? In my option, the general golfing public does not practice nearly enough short game because it’s just not as fun as hitting their driver. I suggest wearing head phones and listening to music as you’re practicing. I also suggest making fun games out of practicing your short game. Try challenging a friend or not leaving the pitching green until you hit 3 out of 5 balls within 3 feet of the hole. Simple fun games will help pass the time of practicing short game and make you a better golfer in a shorter period of time. Just to give you an idea, when I worked at the TPC of Scottsdale where they hold the PGA tour event The Waste Management Open (Previously call The Phoenix Open). I observed how many of the top PGA tour pros practiced. They try to simulate the extreme pressure that goes along with playing on the PGA tour while their practicing. One example is how Vijay wouldn’t leave the green side bunker until he holed three bunker shots (whether that took 5 balls or 5 hours). This increases the pressure of the situ-ation and forces you to become better un-der pressure. Create your own pressure situation based on your golfing ability. Sports help improve young people’s

confidence, balance, motor skills, and social skills among helping improve at other real life skills. I have begun teach-ing my two special needs students’ golf during their P.E. time; it helps improve their motor skills. I would like to make my unique skill set more available to parents of special needs children and show them the joy their children will receive from learning golf. I encourage both parents (if possible) to come out and observe the lessons; I teach the parent(s) how to continue to improve and monitor their children’s golf swing. The PGA is always trying to promote and grow the game of golf. I would like to hear more about different golf programs or golf professionals interested and able to help special needs children learn golf. Asperger’s and autistic chil-dren have a difficult time playing team sports due to their lack of traditional social skills. The joy on the children’s faces the first time they hit a golf ball is unexplainable. Children with autism and Asperger’s are not the only special needs children who benefit from golf. I have successfully taught golf to many other special needs children including: Down Syndrome, AD/HD, Cerebral Palsy, and ED/BD. “Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.”

The North Florida golf community tragically lost a valued PGA mem-ber and friend. Scott Railing was killed in an automobile accident and the news ripped through the hearts of hundreds of those who were touched by Scott. Scott utilized his nationally recognized sales representative skills to help local golf pros build their pro shop businesses, not just sell Nike equipment. And in the process, made friends with everyone he

worked with. Scott was named Nike sales rep of the year, and from what every PGA pro member can tell you, he was the best at what he did.

Scott left behind his wife Shannon, and 4 year old son Carson. And this is where the tragedy of the loss of Scott turns to a miracu-lous showing of sup-port of Scott by the golf community. Within a few days of Scott’s trag-ic loss, TPC Sawgrass GM Bill Hughes donated the entire Stadium golf

course for a day to provide a venue for a fundraiser for Scott’s young son Carson. The Rally Fore Carson Railing was born to raise funds for young Carson’s future education. Those responsible for the suc-cess of the fundraiser included Tournament Coordinator Matt Borocz ,TPC Sawgrass Director of Golf, TPC Sawgrass GM Bill Hughes, North FL PGA Chapter President Jack Aschenbach, Boots Farley who served as finance chairman, North FL PGA Sec-tion Secretary Mike Lynch who handled Sponsorship while Selva Marina CC pro Mark Spencer orga-nized the silent auction. The pictures will tell the rest of the story of just how much the golf community loved and appreci-ated Scott. As for young Carson, he won’t need to worry about his edu-cation thanks to the outpouring of support by the golf community raising nearly $100,000.

In August of 1984, 684 golfers came to Myrtle Beach to compete in a novel event – a tournament that flighted players based on age, gender and hand-icap with the goal of allowing amateurs to experience a tournament that was akin to a PGA Tour event. The event was chaotic in its first year and post-golf food and entertain-ment was less than high-brow, but the tournament resonated with partici-pants. Players latched onto the concept of a multi-day tournament. Word about the Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship spread and an event that was launched on a cocktail napkin over lunch quickly grew into the game’s most unique and inclusive event. Now entering its 29th year, 55,000+ players from all 50 states and more than 40 foreign countries have partici-

pated in the World Am. Nearly 250,000 tournament rounds have been played in the Everyman’s major and at least that many stories have been told. As Labor Day approaches, “regu-lar” golfers from across the globe are preparing to make the trek to Myrtle Beach, the Golf Capital of the World, in hopes of being crowned champion. The World Am will be played August 27-31 on 60 of the Grand Strand’s best courses. What started as an event with scores written on poster board and dinner being served on paper plates has grown into a tournament that features 60 golf courses, gourmet food, live entertain-ment and a nightly golf expo. The World Am is a 72-hole event, challenging golfers to compete on a different Myrtle Beach area course

each day. Players are placed into tightly grouped flights and the game’s most aggressive handicap monitoring sys-tem levels the field for everyone (a 3.5 handicap won the 2011 tournament). After four days of competition, flight winners advance to the World Cham-pionship Playoff, an 18-hole shootout to crown the World Champion. Five women have won the Playoff and win-ning handicaps have ranged from as low as three to as high as 34. Part of the event’s appeal is its home. The World Am has been played in Myrtle Beach since its inception and there isn’t another destination capable of match-ing the quality and quantity of courses along the Grand Strand. The World Am is about more than winning and losing. Camaraderie among participants is at the heart of the tournament’s enduring success. Participants play with different competitors throughout the event and life-long friendships are forged. Competition gives way to a good time, especially at the World’s Largest 19th Hole. In the early days, the 19th Hole consisted of a party tent and a couple picnic tables, but now it consumes the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and includes live music, a golf expo and nightly featured speakers. Annika Sorenstam, David Feherty and NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon are among the big names who have appeared at the 19th Hole over the years. The 19th Hole also includes free food and drinks for participants and there is little players enjoy more than seeing their name appear on the Jumbo Tron that displays nightly flight scores. The World Am continues to evolve but the one thing that has never changed is the loyalty of the event’s players. Whether participants come from near or far, a World Am player is part of a larger family, one that loves the game and its traditions.

In my role as the Executive Director of the Florida Golf Course Superin-tendents Association, I get to travel and attend golf industry meetings, conferences and local chapter events. In doing so I have traveled Florida from Pensacola to Key Largo in pursuit of stories about the golf and turf industry. Along the way, I have been privi-leged to tell the stories of golf course superintendents and their clubs in our magazine The Florida Green, and since 1999 I’ve been able to share sto-

ries about the how’s and why’s of golf course maintenance practices with you. I’ve also shown you how serious-ly superintendents take their role as environmental stewards, and how we support scientific research that helps us do our jobs in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way. As you can see by the photo above, it’s not “all work and no play!” The picture was taken in the Golf Chan-nel broadcast booth at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. That was the 20-minute fun part of half-

day meeting of Allied Florida Golf Associations (PGA Professionals, Club Managers and Superintendents) as we work together to make sure our (your) golf courses which are local small businesses around the state get a fair shake, when state and local laws are passed to regulate our operations. I did get a few minutes with Golf Channel announcers Rich Lerner and Brandle Chamblee, and they were kind enough to recognize and ap-preciate the work of the golf course superintendents and their crews in preparing golf courses for not only tournament play but golfer’s everyday enjoyment of the game. In May I also got to invest in some continuing education and networking sessions with peers in the publication industry by attending conferences for the Turf and Ornamental Communica-tors Assoc. in Nashville, TN and the International Network of Golf Spring Conference in Greenville, SC. Just like in turf management, a professional in any line of work needs to stay up to date in their craft. So classes in effective writing, social media op-portunities and state of the industry sessions help in that regard. Plus the golf outings and 19th hole networking sessions aren’t bad either. Over the next few months I’ll be attending the Florida Fertilizer and Agrichemical Assoc. Annual Meeting and the Florida Turfgrass Association Conference and Show. If the public and media would take a moment to understand how hard these industries and associations work at making their products and practices environmentally friendly, perhaps there would be less negativity when discussing the issues. People with agendas tend to ignore the facts and positive aspects of an industry if they approach issues with a closed uninformed mind. Healthy turf-grass in lawns, campuses, parks, sports fields and golf courses are great oxygen producing, erosion protection, carbon sequestering, water and dust filtering, temperature cooling greens spaces that make our communities productive, job providing, attractive places to live, play and work.

Moët & Chandon and The PGA of America announced that Moët & Chan-don will be the Official Champagne of The PGA of America, aligning the world’s most beloved champagne with the world’s largest sports organiza-tion. Moët & Chandon, the champagne of success and glamour since 1743, is

enhancing its rich heritage as an icon of victorious celebration and global winning moments with this first foray in American golf, beginning with the Ryder Cup, in September of 2012 in Medinah, Ill. “One of the world’s most recognized champagnes of choice at premier events, The PGA of America is proud

that Moet & Chandon will serve as the Official Champagne of The PGA of America,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “We cannot envision a better addition to the many magical moments at our Champion-ships than Moët & Chandon.” Moët & Chandon’s status as the ulti-mate symbol of success, achievement, and victory was created through an unwavering and triumphant presence at many of the world’s most esteemed competitions and high-profile mo-ments. Moët & Chandon has been at the finish line of international boating and car racing competitions for nearly a century, including the Vanderbilt Cup, Formula One, 24 Hours of Le Mans and the America’s Cup. Moet & Chandon celebrates the elegance and style of tennis on the courts of the U.S. Open, and Roland Garros Barclays ATP World Tennis in London. Moët & Chandon also symbol-izes triumph atop the world’s most revered podiums, including the Cannes International Film Festival, the Golden Globe Awards, and the Academy Awards. “Moët & Chandon’s partnership with The PGA of America is a natural,” said Ludovic du Plessis, Vice President of Moët & Chandon North America. “Through the magic of champagne, we look forward to creating unique and unforgettable Moet Moments together with The PGA of America and sharing our sense of celebration in the spirit of success and glamour starting with the Ryder Cup in September as its Proud Partner.” Under the agreement with The PGA of America, Moët & Chandon will be present at all the important and com-memorative moments of the compe-titions including the iconic “Trophy Moments.” In addition, golf fans at PGA of America events will be able to enjoy their golf with a logoed commemora-tive mini Moet bottle that will likely become a valued memento.

irits Brugal Extra Dry Rum

A cask-aged white rum that lives up to the dry Brugal house style, Brugal Extra Dry begs one to rethink his or her perception not only of white rum, but of rum in general. Brugal’s proprietary double-distillation technique creates a dry and clean spirit with fewer of the heavy alcohols that lend other rums their sweeter profiles. This blend of rums – aged a minimum of two years up to five years in White American Oak casks – is triple charcoal filtered to achieve exquisite clarity and conjures a velvety mouthfeel as a result of an exceptional aging process.Brugal Extra Dry’s unparalleled smoothness and drinkability makes it a superla-tive white rum to drink on the rocks, while its one-of-a-kind dry character mixes for better, more balanced cocktails. Available in select markets across the U.S., Brugal Extra Dry Rum preserves the tradition, authenticity and quality for which Brugal is famous. Its dry style is preferred by those who want to experience a different kind of rum, and by bartenders and mixologists as the perfect balance to the sweet mixers often paired with rum.SRP: $19.99ABV: 40% alc./vol.

Nominate your favorite bartender to showcase his/her signature drink with a recipe and photos. Readers will also find a discounted price for that drink so they can visit the bartender to sample the true taste of the libation.

By Juan Acosta, HypnotistGolfHypnosisFloridda.

You’re 100 yards from the hole. You swing a perfectly smooth pitching wedge and your ball flies straight as an arrow, stopping, what seems to be just a few inches from the hole. The thought even crossed your mind that it might go in. A fantastic shot! You pat yourself on the back, as you clean your wedge and you start heading to the green. Your putt from this perspective, seems to be just a formality. But the closer you get to the green, the more evident it is that while your shot was good... it was not as good as you thought. The ball which seemed only inches away, is actually a dreaded 6 feet from the hole. All of a sudden the gimme you thought you had, has turned into a possible and even likely two-putt... The thoughts of failure run through your head and you get carried away envisioning the two-putt and who knows... maybe you’ll do badly enough to make it a three-putt... who knows, right? You’ve now allowed yourself to be consumed with negative thoughts, when just as easily you could rejoice in your ability in the last shot and prepare with confidence for a one-putt. So here’s how you can benefit from this concept of perspective, on and off the course. We can control what happens to us... only some times. But we can always control how we respond to what happens to us. What we focus on is entirely our choice. So why choose to focus on building our situation handling skills? To learn a way to separate your thoughts and feelings from situations so that you can gain a new perspective, maybe you’d find it useful to think your mind as a factory that creates and constructs things... the things the factory of your mind creates are carried around in a railroad system... as you look at the railroad of your mind from the control bridge above the tracks, notice 3 things: your thoughts, your feelings and your urges to act or coping strategies you use. From the vantage point of the control bridge it’s easy to experience and evaluate what happens in your life from a detached perspective - and makes it possible to recognize your

thoughts as “just thoughts” and send them in the appropriate train without getting on the train with them... in your thoughts you can find your self-evaluations, predictions, etc. Your feelings can be recognized as subjective experiences created by your thoughts - therefore they too can be “just feelings” and these feelings include physical sensations as well as emotions or “just sensations” and heading out on their own train... and lastly, catching yourself in your attempts to cope with situations and your urges to act, you can send those urges on the appropriate train of your mind’s railroad.

A great skill to learn, is to remain on the control bridge as we go through life’s situations, so you can be more objective when responding to challenges. You see, from the bridge it’s easy to keep an eye on things to make sure no thoughts, feelings or urges get derailed. It’s easy to check on things and make the appropriate adjustments without taking our eyes off the other trains. But when we get so carried away with, say... a feeling, that we bury ourselves in the emotions’ train and go for a ride. In the meantime the other trains could be on a path of destruction and we’re unaware, blinded by our current perspective.

Note: I have created a guided audio version of this “Mind Train” exercise, based on Steven Hayes’ work and you can find it in my media room at http://GolfHypnosisFlorida.com - It’s an 8 minute audio program that will reward you for the rest of your life! - and of course it’s free. You’re welcome! :-) An objective in life then, could be to develop our ability to view challenges from the control bridge and live in the present. With a little practice it becomes second nature to go back to the bridge when we realize we are chugging down the track. I wonder if you’re up for a challenge? - for the next 21 days, set up a calendar reminder and invest these tiny 8 minutes out of the 1,440 you have every day, to listen to this audio program and let me teach you how to observe your trains from the bridge. If the idea of a better relationship with yourself peeks your interest at all, make a commitment to do this religiously for the next 21 days. What’s in it for you is an increased sense of self-awareness, which leads to being pro-active about changing the things you want to change. Following through with this challenge will increase your ability to move through life’s situations in a more intelligent, objective and rational way. Also, accepting this challenge will teach you how to regulate your emotions and observe and direct, not micro-manage. In other words, it’ll give you a brand new perspective on many things. With the proper perspective you can enjoy all the fantastic shots that life gives you - and you can be confident about that six footer you are about to sink. Go for the challenge... I double dog dare you!

The recent major championship triumphs of Rory McIlroy, Graeme Mc-Dowell and Darren Clarke have shined a white-hot spotlight on Northern Ireland’s treasure trove of golf course gems, places like Royal County Down and Royal Portrush. But not to be forgotten to the south and west, meandering through fescue-covered dunes along County Kerry’s rugged Atlantic coastline, sits the property that started Ameri-cans’ fascination with Irish golf three decades ago – Ballybunion Golf Club (www.ballybuniongolfclub.ie). Ballybunion’s Old and Cashen Courses present the quintessential Irish golf experience. Their windswept setting amid tumbling, seaside terrain recalls the game’s earliest origins mak-ing them “must plays” for every serious golfer. Ranked consistently in the world’s top 20 courses by GOLF Magazine, the par-71, 6,802-yard Old Course radiates majesty and charm. Beautifully con-toured fairways fuse with a blanket of grassy dunes to fashion a classic test of links golf. The Old Course has mesmer-ized guests for more than a century, a tribute to its embodiment of the game’s greatest traits. The 402-yard No. 11 hole is widely heralded as one of the finest par 4s in the world, while the long par-3 15th is both remarkably scenic and treacherous. Opened in 1984, the Cashen Course was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones. Situated on an even more dramatic parcel than its sister layout, the par-72, 6,306-yard course is one of the most challenging on the Emerald Isle. Bold and flirtatious, it requires

acute precision off the tee and into the greens. Wildly undulating with breath-taking views throughout, the Cashen Course is consistently rated among the best modern layouts in Great Britain and Ireland by Golfweek. As part of a multi-year project, respected golf course architecture firm Hawtree Limited recently fashioned several modifications to greens, tees, bunkers and playing corridors while maintaining the integrity of both iconic designs.

On the Old Course, work included:•Altering tee boxes on the second and fourth holes so they nestle into dunes and blend with the natural surrounds•Removing “relic” bunkers just off No. 4 tee and adding a new bunker to the modern landing area•Building a forward tee on No. 7 to join the White and Blue tees atop a dramatic cliff •Decreasing the size of three bunkers on No. 8 and converting them from sod-faced to more of a grass-faced style for greater course-wide uniformity

“We are very cognizant of our duty to retain the Old Course’s classic routing and unique ambiance,” says Vari Mc-

Greevy, General Manager of Ballybun-ion Golf Club. “These skillfully executed tweaks make golfers’ journeys all the more memorable."

Changes to the Cashen Course involved:•Planting fescue grass around No. 1 tee box to evoke a greater links feel and re-grassing the backs of fairway bunkers which had become parkland-like over time•Adding mounds and grasses behind the first green and along the first and second fairways to further promote a one-with-nature aura•Enlarging the first, second and 15th greens to create additional hole locations•Repositioning No. 2 green to the edge of the Cashen Estuary to amplify scenic views•Lengthening the par-5 15th hole and widening the last 100 yards to augment strategic options•Expanding the par-3 16th tee to uphold turf health

“The Cashen Course is more popu-lar than ever with our international members and guests,” says Mc-Greevy. “The updates enrich playing experiences and remain true to the layout’s original, rugged spirit.” Ready to pack your bags for the golf trip of a lifetime? During the high season (through October 7, 2012), guests are invited to play one round each on the Old and Cashen Courses for €180 total (approximately $225). To take advantage of this spe-cial offer, rounds must be pre-booked and played within seven days of each other. Nestled half way between Savannah and Jacksonville are the gorgeous Golden Isles of Georgia, a group of bar-rier islands that are rich in history and golf. The largest and most populated of them is St. Simons Island, about the size of Manhattan with pristine beauty and pure southern charm. The area is home to the McGladrey Classic, a PGA tournament held in October and hosted by local resident and 2012 Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III. The area has become a tranquil haven for PGA play-ers and their families, attracting among others Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar, both who lived in Central Florida. About 50 years ago an abandoned cotton plantation was converted to a full service tennis and golf retreat called Sea Palms Resort which sits in the heart of the island. If you like your stay setting charming with lush grounds and all the amenities you might want, this is the place to be. There is a full array of lovely accom-modation choices including hotel style deluxe guest rooms, executive studios and one to three bedroom suites with scenic sun decks and screened porches overlooking the island’s marshes. Dining at Sea Palms can be enjoyed at the Putters Club Restaurant and Lounge and light fare is available at Bogey’s Tiki Bar at the adjacent pool. An outdoor wedding was happening while we were there. They have a lovely private lawn area with a fountain

flowing out of a pond as a backdrop to the gazebo ceremony. The thing I was most surprised about was the extensive convention and meeting facilities avail-able. There are numerous board rooms of varying sizes for individual meetings and three inter-connected ballrooms for large functions with state of the art audio/visual equipment to make your corporate meeting or family celebration the very best experience. The cater-ing kitchen can handle any size event and satisfy your culinary wish list with

artistic flair and utmost attention to detail. Insuring an enjoyable stay for their guests in the Golden Isles is the main responsibil-ity of the staff at Sea Palms. If you are a history buff you can visit sites such as Fort Frederica and learn about the Battle of Bloody Marsh. The Resort is a great place to take a walk

under the ancient live oaks, bicycle around the property or on the beach, swim in the pools or ocean, throw some horseshoes, play some sandpit volleyball like the Olympians and enjoy a game of tennis on the rubico clay courts. There is a fitness center and sauna. Arrangements can be made for horseback riding, kayaking, fishing and my wife’s favorite activity-shopping in the quaint boutiques around the island.

The most predominant feature of the resort is the 27 holes of golf that weave their way through forest thickets and around pristine marshland. The prolific golf course architect George Cobb de-signed a great layout that has boo-meranging doglegs around large pine stands and water features with the occasional straightaway hole to keep your round interesting. Tom Jackson laid out an extra 9 of equal complexity that requires a bit more precision. Not to worry- there are multiple tee loca-tions that provide everyone an oppor-tunity to enjoy their round. The neat thing is you can mix up the 3 nines to enjoy a different look as you play. Rick Irwin is the well respected and longtime Head Golf Professional and he and his friendly staff can provide per-sonal instruction to help you with your game or assist with a fun tournament no matter what your group’s ability. I played all the holes while I was there and thoroughly enjoyed Sea Palms golf experience. If you want to enjoy the gentle charm and relaxing serenity of Geor-gia’s Golden Isles, chart your course to the Sea Palms Resort. Call 1-800-870-3736 or visit www.SeaPalms.com.

It’s easy to fall victim to our own dilemmas, challenges, thoughts and concerns. For many of us it’s a constant struggle to keep our heads above water. There are some very special people, however, who also make room in their heart for the less fortunate. Ellen Thomson Parcell is one of those special people who has been involved in sev-eral non-profit organizations. As CEO of “HEART TO HEART,” a non-profit organization that houses and educates homeless women and children, Ellen is proud of the accom-plishments made by the organization. “HEART TO HEART has been in exis-tence since 1992 and I came on board in 2007. Although it is a relatively small organization, they have housed and ed-ucated homeless women and children to becoming self sufficient members of society. Among those who completed the program are women who became college graduates, employees in the health field, as well as in many other avenues of employment. We are very proud of our high percentage of suc-cess rate.” As is well documented, there is a lot of money raised for charity by the ma-jor golf tours. That being said, it pales in comparison by the profits raised by the thousands of charity golf events each year at ‘local’ golf fund-raisers. Ellen has used golf as part of the fund-raising equation. “I’ve been involved in at least ten golf fund-raisers over the years for non-profits. Combined, we realized a profit of well over $150,000.” Ellen thinks that golf fund-raisers have an additional benefit aside from the revenue taken in at that particu-lar event. “Golf is a game that attracts many people who are kind and con-siderate. When they partake in a golf fund-raiser, it introduces them to a charity which in many cases opens the door for future involvement.” Ellen was introduced to golf in a physical education course at the Uni-versity of Minnesota and it continues

to be part of her life. “Golf takes my thoughts away from all of my normal concerns when I concentrate on just hitting the ball. In addition to the serenity of thought, it is in a lovely setting and I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of improving. I like to try to take things to the limit.” Hosted by Todd Lewis of “Golf

Channel” on Monday, Dec. 3, Ellen is chairperson of the HEART TO HEART golf fund-raiser at the Country Club of Orlando. For those who would like to play one of the oldest and best private country clubs in Central Florida or sponsor this worthy cause, visit “EVENTS” at www.h2hcentralflorida.org or call (407) 463-6297.

They met at the World Golf Hall of

Fame during a conference where

Monika a.k.a. “The Little German Girl”

was suggested as the 4th to round out a

foursome of client golf. Unfortunately,

but really fortunately, they were rained

out after the first hole. Being from

Orlando they were able to use their

rain checks to play eighteen holes on

the King and Bear Course where they

really “hit” it off!

A year and a half later they got

engaged on the eighteenth green at

Isleworth where the ring was in the

hole as Monika lined up her 3 foot

putt. She spotted the

black box and Perry

grabbed it out of the

hole, and knelt down

to offer his proposal.

Monika said yes and

golf themed wedding

plans began.

“Perry & Monika’s Tournament of

Love” (Wedding) proceeded a year later

on the 10th tee box at the Greg Norman

designed ChampionsGate Golf Course.

The wedding was complete with a

ceremonial tee shot.

A golfer’s dream honeymoon

followed in July with a trip “across the

pond” to The Open Championship at

Hoylake near Liverpool. Of course the

honeymoon continued in Scotland

with rounds at the Old Course in St.

Andrews, the charming North Berwick

Golf Club as well as Carnoustie.

Monika & Perry have great memories

of their meeting,

engagement, wedding,

and honeymoon that

they proudly share with

friends and golfers they

meet along their path.

Chapter Champions Crowned Three of the four North Florida Chapters have concluded their Chapter Championships. Chapter Champions are: West Central – Matt Mitchell, Tampa Bay Downs, East Central – Mike Smith, Life Member, and Southwest – William Landsdowne, unaffiliated. Senior Chapter Champions are: West Central – Matt Mitchell, Tampa Bay Downs, East Central – Stan Cooke, Golden Hills GC, Southwest – Jack McFaul, Waterford GC. Assistant Champions are: East Central – Sean Vigue, Faldo Golf Institute, Southwest – Randy Kok, Ritz Carlton Sarasota. Tropical Storm Debby forced the postponement of the Northern Chapter’s until this early Fall! Congratulations to all of our Chapter Champions! Rod Perry, Crane Lakes GC in Port Orange, kept us all in anticipation with his second place tie at the PGA Professional National Championship in Seaside CA! Rod made steady progress up the leaderboard throughout the tournament but just couldn’t catch the Champion, Matt Dobyns. Rod has won the North Florida Section Player of the Year many times! He will also defend his title in the 2012 Florida Open. He’ll be in the field at our 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island! We’re proud of our other qualifiers as well; David Hronek, Plantation Golf & CC, Sean Gorgone, Sweetwater Highlands, Brad Turner, Golf Academy of America, Doug Rhea, Lake Nona, and David Damesworth, Orange Tree GC. Sean Solodovnick and Nathan McMullen, Gainesville CC, took a big lead on Monday with great score of 60! They held off Jeff Boudrie and Bryan Snyder who managed to close the gap to a couple shots, but Sean and Nathan finished with a birdie and eagle in the last few holes to take the Two Person

Championship title at 19 under, 125! Jim and Chris Slattery tried to apply some pressure as well, but fell short to Sean and Nathan, too. David Hronek, Plantation Golf & CC and his partner Jack McFaul, Waterford Golf Club shot an impressive 64 in the second round to pass the field and take the Senior Junior Title at 133. Keith Kulzer and Charles Raulerson finished second at 135. Thank you to our Presenting Partner, Orange Lake Resorts for donating their golf course to boost the purse almost $3000! Thank you to host PGA Professionals, Stewart McComb and Tony Johnson for their attention to detail and exceptional service!

Cindy Yueer Feng and Roberto Lowenthal Are Off To PGA Jr. Championship! “Cindy” Yueer Feng from Orlando fired a final round 69 along with her first round of 75 for a 144 total. She edged out Dree Fausnaugh, also from Orlando who shot a two round total of 146. Roberto Lowenthal from Orlando shot a solid two rounds of even par and finished at 144 along with Matthew Ruel from Oldsmar who shot 75 and 69! Roberto beat Matthew in a sudden-death playoff to advance to the 37th Junior PGA Championship with Cindy. Thank you to Walt Disney World for hosting our championship and giving us such an affordable entry fee! Thank you to PGA Director of Golf, Aaron Merritt along with Tyler Hitchcock and the entire Disney staff for the always friendly and

exceptional service! Thank you to the PGCC volunteers who make us look good! There’s nothing better than golf on the Magnolia Course and Disney! Thank you to all the kids and parents for being a part of this great championship! Donny Lee Captures the NFPGA Stableford Title while Kyaw Htet Outlasts Field In The NFPGA Shootout. The day began with our NFPGA Stableford presented by Global Golf Sales and the PGA TOUR. The Stableford was also the qualifier for our NFPGA Shootout in the afternoon. Donny Lee, Orange County National, had to beat Travis Daniels, Juliette Falls, in a sudden-death playoff to claim the Stableford title. Both finished the tournament with 40 points. Then came some lunch and the top 20 Stableford finishers went back out for the Shootout! The Shootout came down to Kyaw Htet, Innisbrook Resort, versus Cary Splane, Marsh Creek. Kyaw won the Shootout with his par on the final Shootout hole. Although, it was a long day that included the usual Orlando thundershower delay, the players enjoyed the competition on the challenging Orange Tree Golf Club. Host PGA Professional David Damesworth and his entire staff treated us with great service and exceptional course conditions. We thank them for coming in for us on their “off day”! Thank you to our partners Global Golf Sales and the PGA TOUR for presenting our combined event. A tip of the cap to Gerry James, Center Force Golf, for making it into the US Senior Open. He was at the top of the stats for driving distance averaging 300 yards!

Keith Kulzer defeated Bill Shriver 2 & 1 to take the NFPGA Global Golf Match Play title at Isleworth CC.Rod Perry defeated Vince Cali 3 & 2 to claim the Consolation Bracket title. What a great week on a perfect course! Thank you all who played! Thank you Marty DeAngelo, host PGA Professional and the members and Board of Isleworth for the privilege of playing. It was truly a privilege to be welcomed to Isleworth. One word to describe it...PERFECT! The Match Play Championship kicks off the season’s 4 Majors. It was also the first event in the Global Golf Dream 18 in which selected holes from each Major will be used to complete an 18-hole score that will conclude at the Section Championship this Fall. The “purse” of over $20,000 donated by Steve Sponder and Global Golf will then be distributed according to how the player scores on his Dream 18 quest throughout the season. Players must play in all of the Majors to remain eligible and this unique format really helps keep up participation in the Section “Majors”. Cross one off the bucket list! Sunny 85 with a breeze. A perfect day on a perfect course! Our NFPGA Professionals brought 3 amateurs out to Isleworth for a day of golf, food and fun. You could see it in the eyes of the players that this was one of those once in a lifetime rounds at the exclusive Isleworth CC in Orlando. The course was fantastic and the views mind blowing! Thank you to Marty DeAngelo, our PGA host and Director of Golf for allowing us all the privilege to visit and play. Again, thank you to the members and Board for inviting us! The food and service were exactly what you’d expect...fabulous! Champions were Christopher Russell, PGA, Greg Busch,Josh Langford, Eric Mardiaga from Stonegate Golf Club. Mike Smith Claims the NFPGA Senior Match Play Title! I guess you can say TOUR experience helped both Mike Smith and Larry Rinker battle through 3

days of morning and afternoon matches against their fellow PGA Professionals at Rio Pinar. It doesn’t get easier as you get older, they say! Mike defeated Larry in the final match 3 & 2. Freddy Gibson and Gerry James made it to the quarterfinals. It’s great to see the camaraderie along with the desire to win amongst our senior greats!Thank you to Mike Regner, host PGA Professional, and the entire staff at Rio Pinar for hosting and the always exceptional service! The pro’s look forward to their matches at Rio Pinar every Spring! Congratulations to our Jeff Freeman, PGA, from the Country Club of Orlando on his final round 64 at the 73rd Senior PGA Championship! He made the big

move up the leaderboard 25 spots to finish T 29. Jeff will continue to compete on the Champions Tour for this season and hopefully beyond! Finally, a tip of the cap to Joey Hidock, PGA teaching professional at The Villages for his efforts to inspire and enlighten children in need of

some fun and happiness! Joey has been visiting the Arnold Palmer Childrens Hospital monthly to put smiles on the faces of those who are seriously ill and battling cancer. His program, “Putting on Smiles” gives the kids something to think about other than the reason they are in the hospital. His unique and fun interaction with these kids utilizing nerf golf balls, Velcro golf games and other golf props allow the kids a chance to compete and win medals and prizes. They tee it right in the hospital! Everybody wins! When they’re smiling, you’re smiling! The kids look forward to Joey’s visit every month. PGA – Professionals Giving Again!

On July 11th and 12th, over 5,000

youths in the Palm Beach County area

came to learn what it means to stay fit

this summer. The Palm Beach County

Sports Commission hosted the 2012

Kid’s Fitness Festival at the Palm Beach

County Convention Center where over

40 different sports and professional or-

ganizations brought activities and pro-

fessionals from their respective sport

in order to introduce these young kids

to the many great ways to stay fit and

active this summer.

The South Florida PGA along with

the Don Law Golf Academy had the

wonderful opportunity to spend time

teaching the thousands of young par-

ticipants about the great sport of golf.

PGA certified professionals were able

to introduce eager kids to both the full

swing and the putting stroke. Diana

Law, Dave Cunliffe, PGA and Mack Mc-

Conaha, PGA all donated their valuable

time and talents over these two days

to teaching youngsters the basics of

golf fundamentals and how fun it can

be to stay active through golf. A short

demonstration and instruction of

basic swing techniques proceeded the

chance for young children to hit golf

balls at an inflatable dinosaur named

“Golfzilla” as well as use their skills in

a putting challenge.

The two days were packed with fun,

excitement, and tremendous energy as

the festival participants got to experi-

ence and develop skills in golf and

other activities including Tae Kwon Do,

Squash, Surfing, Judo, Hockey, Fencing,

Cricket, Dance, and many more. Each

sport was able to put on a short clinic

for the participants to introduce them

to a new way of getting involved in a

variety of sports and activities.

All proceeds from the event went

to the Palm Beach County Sports

Commission, a non-profit organiza-

tion which provides local youths the

opportunity to learn sportsmanship,

teamwork and citizenship through

sport. The Sports Commission also

promotes character development

through sporting activities, lifelong

physical fitness, a drug-free lifestyle,

and safe and fun access to healthy

activities.

A big thanks goes to the Palm

Beach Sports Commission for putting

on such a great event in Palm Beach

County as well as to the Don Law Golf

Academy and their staff, Diana Law,

Dave Culiffe, PGA and Mack McCo-

naha, PGA for their special part in

growing the game of golf.

Florida is a great motorcycling state. People from every-where come to enjoy our weather, events and beautiful sce-nic rides. Here are a few tips to help improve your riding skills to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable ride.

1. Practice, Practice, Practice (braking, cornering, swerving, etc.). Remember the old adage, “Practice makes perfect!”

2. Find a smooth, empty, grease- and sand-free lot to practice braking, swerving, and stopping. Those are all key maneuvers in avoiding problems on the road.

3. Use the friction zone with your clutch and throttle but add slight pressure on your rear brake for very slow speeds. Practice this technique which gives you great control over your bike at low speeds.

4. Travel a less traveled road to practice corner-

ing (looking thru, press and roll). If you’re tense inhale deeply and exhale several times to help you relax.

5. Take an advanced class to help sharpen your skills.

6. Check out Ride Like a Pro videos and classes. RideLikeaPro.com

7. Get out there and just ride more! The sheer joy of riding will help you relax and increase your confi dence.

You can never be over educated or practice too much! We do learn through experience and more experience helps us become better riders! The true joy of riding happens when the conscious becomes subconscious. I liken it to coffee grounds becoming coffee. That only happens with time. So keep riding safe, strong and ROAR!

As the Sunshine State’s official host hotel for the Republican National Con-vention, as well as the South Carolina delegates, Innisbrook is renaming the holes on the top-ranked Copperhead Course after the past 18 Republican Presidents of the United States during the RNC to be held in Tampa, August 27-30, 2012. With 18 past Republican Presidents, one president will be rec-ognized on each hole of the golf course in the order they held office, starting with hole #1 which will be named after Abraham Lincoln. Innisbrook’s Cop-perhead Course is a favorite among the PGA TOUR players that compete here annually in a nationally televised PGA TOUR event. This is just one of many special festivities to take place during the week of the RNC being held in the

Tampa Bay Times Forum.

The 18 Republican Presidents are as follows: 1. Abraham Lincoln (1861 – 1865); 2. Ulysses S. Grant (1869 – 1877); 3. Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881); 4. James A. Garfield (1881);5. Chester A. More than 130 Realtors gathered at Verandah for the Realtor Association of Greater Fort Myers and the Beach golf tournament benefiting three programs – Vacations for Veterans and the association’s Crisis Fund and Housing Foundation. The four-person teams were divided into four categories – men’s, women’s, mixed and office – in an 18-hole best-ball tournament that included a longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contests. Participants also took part in a silent auction that further benefited the charities.

The team of Chris Black, Brian Thompson, David Farr and Tim Cochran came in first place with a score of 56. Longest drive winner was Brad Larson, while Brad Carpenter achieved closest-to-the pin status. Verandah, the 1,456-acre master-planned community located along the Orange River in Fort Myers, offers two world-class courses. Old Orange, Verandah’s first 18-hole championship golf course designed by award-winning golf course architect Bob Cupp, was inspired by the spectacular oak trees throughout the site. Whispering Oak, the challenging but beginner-friendly

course, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II. Verandah offers villa homes and estate, custom and traditional single-family homes in a variety of neighborhoods, including homes available for immediate occupancy. Home and homesite packages are priced from the mid-$200,000s to more than $1 million, and pricing on custom homesites starts in the $50,000s. women all across Orlando are turning to a specialist named Angel Rodriguez instead of Botox® or plastic surgery to get rid of wrinkles, loose skin, dark circles under the eyes, and other facial imperfections. “It’s the only guaranteed way to look 10-15 years younger without needles or knives,” Rodriguez boasts. And if consumer response is any indication of his effectiveness, just try booking an appointment. It's not unusual to have to schedule three months in advance to see him. Has everyone gone crazy? Well . . . not really.Scientific Breakthrough or Beginners Luck?

It all begins with the Syneron brand of laser-like technology (utilized by Rodriguez), which have been proven to be “the only combined energy platform that effectively treats wrinkles, skin laxity, age spots, pigmentation, and acne” in scientific clinical studies with full FDA approval. However that's just the beginning . . .

Rodriguez’s results are so accelerated that a representative from Syneron has flat out said that he has seen nothing like them in his ten years in the industry and has offered to buy his “before and after” pictures to promote the company.

Dr. Destephens, an anti-aging specialist and internal medicine doctor, has seen Rodriguez’s work first hand and has actually gone “under the laser” himself. “Angel has developed his own unique set of protocols that are an evolution of Syneron technology,” says Dr. Destephens. “He has been able to get far better results than even what the manufacturer advertises because he has tweaked and optimized the protocols. That's why so many people started calling it 'The Angelic Lift.'”

And the Syneron laser technology by it’s own merits is nothing to sneeze at for treating wrinkles and cinching up loose skin. Just look at all the press coverage it's been getting recently: It's been on Rachel Ray, The Doctors, Dr.

Anti-Aging Breakthrough!

“Who would have thought that this ‘weird’ combination of cellulite lasers with skin tightening lasers would be able to revival a $17k face lift!”

In a remarkable turn of events, arguably one of the strangest in the history of Florida aesthetics,

Phil, and famously on Keeping Up with the Kardashians for treating Kim’s cellulite, as well as dozens of other media outlets.

But when Rodriguez got his hand on this technology, he stumbled onto something totally unique and rare . . .Beginners Luck Strikes Again!

Then on February 24th, 2007, at a meeting of world renowned plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and aesthetic MDs, he had a bit of luck . . . maybe it was insight.

Rodriguez was in a seminar learning under one of the master practitioners of the Syneron laser company who has celebrity clients around the world. He was demonstrating how when you combine cellulite reduction lasers with wrinkle reduction, unlikely results start to happen. . .

Rodriguez saw that the c o m b i n a t i o n o f d i f f e r e n t technologies was key to getting pronounced results faster, and immediately started experimenting on himself. “I was too naive to limit my expectations about what was possible non-invasively, so I kept trying new things,” he says. What He Found Was Wildly Exciting . . .

"The first thing I was able to do was remove a scar from my neck that had been plaguing me since early childhood," he says. "If you come to my office, I'll show you the pictures."

By combining laser modalities in very specific ways, he was able to shrink loose skin and fat, dissolve crows feet, and reduce wrinkles and fine lines far better than anyone thought was possible non-invasively.

He started applying what he was learning to his practice and amaz ing th ings s tar ted to happen . . . Tu m m y Tu c k W i t h o u t Surgery!

Rodriguez found that by combining cellulite lasers with skin tightening lasers, he could actually get near tummy tuck results without surgery!

Max, who came all the way from Italy for this, writes, “To be able to look at yourself naked in the mirror, and see a tight, ten-year younger version of yourself without a massive ‘smile scar’ running across your belly is worth it for twice the price of plastic surgery!” (See video and pictures at www.NoCutTuck.com).Turkey Neck Reduction Without Surgery!

Beverly from Gainesville writes: “I thought about getting a Lifestyle Lift,” she says, “for the loose flesh under my neck. When I read all the horror stories associated with it there was no way I was going to try that. Thanks to Angel, I was able to get a very natural and feminine looking facelift without surgery, and without any foreign bodies inserted into my face. An added bonus that I didn’t expect but turned out wonderfully was my eyelids were lifted and the bags and wrinkles underneath were reduced! ”

As my wife’s birthday approached I wanted to celebrate by taking her to a very special place. I found it in the Mission Inn Resort located in a little town called Howey in the Hills, Florida, which is located about a 35 minute drive northwest of Orlando. This resort was established by the Nick Beucher family in 1964 and is still managed by the family to this day. Over the years it has grown into a world class resort with over 200 rooms along with a number of villas and townhouses that can be rented or purchased. The entire complex has an elegant Span-ish architectural flavor that emanates a warm, home like atmosphere. As a golfer I was familiar with Mission Inn and its two unique golf courses. El Campeon was designed in 1917 and has been consistently ranked in Florida’s top 10 courses. It is reminiscent of courses that you might find in the hills of Carolina or Tennes-see. Las Colinas was designed by PGA player and television announcer Gary Koch and opened in 1992. While it has some elevated holes it is a little more traditional but equally as challenging as El Campeon. A variety of pro-am, high school, college and charity events have been held here over the years and it is also the home courses for the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy. I

remembered a question that my non-golfing wife asked me a few years ago as we embarked on one of my traveling golf ventures: “Is there anything there that I can do?”. At Mission Inn Resort the question should be: “Is there anything there that I can’t do?” In addition to playing golf a guest has a slew of activities to choose from such

as tennis, fishing, power boating, trap and skeet shooting, riding bicycles or jogging along several trails including a nature trail that recently acquired a bald eagle who built a private next for his offspring. Mission Inn also has a fantastic number of facilities for meetings, parties, weddings and other group functions that are intelligently spread out over 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor spaces. Attached to these facilities are three restaurants, two

bars, and an outdoor swimming pool in which to cool off perhaps after a short workout in the fitness center. Speaking of relaxing, as part of my wife›s birthday surprise we both enjoyed our first (but certainly not our last) couples massage at the Spa Marbelle. The spa offers a variety of personal treatments and I’ll bet if you

don’t see what you want their profes-sional staff will try their best to get it for you. Even though we spent a day and a half at Mission Inn we enjoyed all three restaurants starting with lunch at Knickers overlooking both courses, and dining that evening at the elegant El Conquistador, which featured many choices of delicious food (Don’t forget to order dessert!). The next morning we had breakfast at the La Hacienda facility and then

spent some time in the swimming pool before returning to our room. Our accommodations were very attractive and spacious with a terrific view from our screened balcony that overlooked a tee off area and the rolling terrain of the El Campeon golf course. When our visit was completed my wife and I both agreed that Mission Inn Resort is a very, very special place and we will recommend it to our friends. We plan to return and we are extremely certain that you will really like it too!

On July 20, 2012, Cypress Head Golf Club in Port Orange celebrated 20 years of operation as a Daily Fee Course owned by the City of Port Orange. Early in 1987, a committee was formed to determine the needs of creating a well-balanced city as Port Orange looked to the future of the commu-nity. A group of residents formed the Pioneer Heights Association and over 150 people pledged to support a city owned Golf course. Those Founders and City Officials celebrated with a scramble tournament and reception at the Cypress Head Club House on July 20, 2012. Cypress Head is managed by KemperSports with Mike Collins as Head Pro and GM, Kate Minnock is Director of Sales & Marketing and Den-nis Picavance is the Course Superinten-dent. PGA Professional Kellie Stenzel Named One of Golf Digest’s 50 Best Women Teachers

PGA Professional Kellie Stenzel of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. and Brooklyn, N.Y., is being recognized as one of the best – again. In addition to her Golf Magazine’s Top-100 Teachers in America designation, Stenzel has once again been included in Golf Digest’s Top 50 Best Women Teachers list. “It is always an honor to be included on a list with so many outstanding teachers of the game,” said Stenzel, who started her teaching career in 1990 at Admirals Cove in Jupiter, Fla. “This list is a motivator for all of us to keep studying technique and trying to make the game of golf accessible and enjoyable for all.” More than 1,600 golf professionals vote in Golf Digest’s biennial ranking of America’s 50 Best Women Teaches. The ranking is based entirely on peer voting with ballots being sent to all female Class A PGA of America and LPGA Teaching and Club Professional members. Stenzel works during the winter in Florida at Palm Beach Par-3 and the Palm Beach Country Club, and during the summer at North Shore Country Club in Glen Head, N.Y. Along with being an accomplished professional golfer on the Ladies European Tour, Stenzel has published three golf instruction books: The Women’s Guide to Golf: A Handbook for Beginners, The Women’s Guide to Consistent Golf, and The Women’s Guide to Lower Scores.
