    Workshop Descriptions

The Whats In a Word? workshop is designed to help interpreters under-stand the importance of increasing ones vocabulary to enhance proper word-to-sign equivalence, and to conceptualize word meanings. The presenter will

offer analytical thinking strategies to deduce content-to-context meaning.Participants are encouraged to use creativity and a range of linguistic re-sources to come up with a faithful translation without the pressure of real-time processing. Learning synonyms in ASL increases ones sign vocabularyand also provides the interpreter with tools to become more effective dur-ing the actual interpreting process. Once information is presented, studentswill be required to present that information in sign to voice and voice to signformats. Resources will be pulled from poetry, music, scripture, political top-ics, and current events.

The You Said What? workshop will be approached from three different an-gles. Primarily, the interpretation of Scriptures will be investigated as it re-lates to history, culture, and the language and customs of biblical times inorder to determine context. Secondly, a unique study of philosophy will beintroduced that allows participants to do their own study, and draw their ownconclusions based on their interpretation of the content of scripture. This

concept will be used to determine the proper word (sign) usage and ASLstructure that can be used to convey the proper meaning and intent of a pas-sage.

Enjoy an exciting experience by entering the Deaf World. All who enter must communicate by sign language only, using ASL, finger-spelling, or gesturing. While in this community," you'll place an order at a pizzeria and transact business at the Power & Light Co., gain-

ing points along the way to earn a first, second, or third place prize. But remember, NO TALKING ALLOWED. Anyone caught speakingwill be arrested by the Community Cop and charged a fine of .25. So turn off your vocal chords and flex your finger muscles and join usin a DEAF, DEAF WORLD!
