Il Parco Nazionale dell’Alta Murgia è stato istituitoil 1° luglio 2004. The park was founded on 1st July 2004. It has anarea of about 68 hectares, and is only a few kilometresfrom Bari and covers the Murgia a chain of lowcarsic hills where stony ground alternates withmeadows and pastureland, and where in spring thereare numerous species of wild orchids.With more than 1,500 species of wild plants, aquarter of all those listed in Italy, this is the naturalhabitat of wild fauna dominated by the falco grillaio,the symbol of this protected area.In this harsh natural setting, dotted with ancientfarmhouses and shelters for sheep, (the “iazzi”),there are signs of prehistoric times, like the foot-prints of the dinosaurs and the remains of Neo-lithic men.Battered by the wind and burnt by the sun, the Murgiapreserves the fascination of an uncontaminated landwhere precious streams run underground in thegrottoes, and where one breathes the clear pungentair of winter days while admiring nature and thesilent testimony of the stones of man’s history.

The latter hasa wide courtyard on to which the old houses, stables,store-rooms and the reception hall face, now used forcultural activities organised by the local authorities.Walking around on the old paving stones one canimagine the work, customs, music and legends thatwere part of the life of the castle. such as St Nicolas’s, and the Claustro dellaGiudecca, and rich palaces of the local nobility suchas Palazzo Melodia in the Cathedral square.Here in Altamura, known as the “Lioness of Puglia”,a famous liberal University was founded, that theproud inhabitants defended fiercely. The surroundingsof the town are surprising. In 1993 during explorationof the Grotto Lamalunga,the unique remains of a wholehuman skeleton of the Paleolithic Age came tolight. A discovery equal in importance to that of thePark of Dinosaurs. Proseguendo sulla SP. 230 incontriamo Poggiorsini,località famosa per la straordinaria pietra delle suecave. L’insediamento, popolato sin dal Paleoliticoantico, fu una stazione della via Appia e del TratturoRegio Melfi - Castellaneta. La famiglia Orsini, dallaquale prende il nome, ne fece il proprio feudo a partiredal 1609 e ne detenne il possesso sino al 1910.

Perched on the hills of wheat fields, Spinazzola hasits origins in the third century BC. After the fall of theRoman Empire in the West (476 AD) it fell to theinvasions of the Vandals, Longobards and Swabians.About 1100 the Templars founded the first Hospitalin Apulia where the knights cared for their woundedin the Crusades. In 1735 it received city status fromthe King of Naples, Charles III of Bourbon. Every yearon the 4th August the Madonna of the Woods isfeted with the historic cavalcade, fireworks and bands..The holy image of he Virgin found by a forester in atree trunk is carried in procession from the Cathedralto the Sanctuary.

Keeping on the Sp 230 we come next to Poggiorsini,famous for the stone from its quarries. The originalsettlement, inhabited since the Paleolithic age, wasa stopping place on the Appian Way and the RoyalDrove to Melfi-Castellaneta. The Orsini family, fromwhich the name comes, made this its fief from 1609and kept it in their possession till 1910.

Arroccata sulle colline ricoperte di campi di grano,Spinazzola ha origine nel secolo III a.C.Dopo la caduta dell'Impero Romano d'Occidente (476d.C.) fu preda di numerose invasioni di Vandali, Lon-gobardi e Svevi. Intorno al 1100 i Templari vi fecerocostruire il primo Ospedale della Puglia dove curarei cavalieri feriti nelle Crociate. Nel 1735 ottenne dalRe di Napoli Carlo III di Borbone il titolo di "Città".Ogni anno, il 4 Agosto, si festeggia la Madonna delBosco con la caratteristica cavalcata, fuochi pirotecnicie bande musicali. L’immagine sacra della Vergine,trovata da un boscaiolo nel tronco di un albero, èportata in processione dalla Cattedrale al Santuario.

La parte del borgo antico, denominata “Scesciola”, èdistinta dal resto del suo centro storico. Il termineScesciola, di origine araba, significa "labirinto" espiega l'intersecarsi di stradine e vicoli. La Cattedrale,dedicata alla Vergine Assunta, presenta una facciatain pietra calcarea bianca con un rosone romanico etre portali rinascimentali.L'attuale Chiesa dell'Immacolata Concezione fucostruita verso la fine del XVIII secolo su una vecchiachiesetta, detta Concezione Vecchia, che a sua voltasi insedia su un'antichissima cappella dedicata a SanRocco.Ad un chilometro dall'abitato il Santuario dellaMadonna del Sabato. La Chiesa, della metà del XVIIsecolo, fu costruita su di una grotta, dove era statadipinta nel tufo un'immagine della Vergine col Bambino.La Grotta di San Michele, che ospita la chiesarupestre, si trova ai piedi della città che è altresì riccadi insediamenti di epoca imperiale.Le ricette locali sono a base di cardoncelli, deliziosifunghi delle colline murgiane.

The part of the old town called “Scesciola “ standsout from the rest of the town. Scesciola, originallyfrom the Arab word meaning labyrinth, is explainedby the intricate streets and alleys. The Cathedral,which is dedicated to the Assumption, has a façadeof white limestone with a Romanesque rose windowand three renaissance doorways.The present church of the Immaculate Conceptionwas built in the XVIII century on the remains of an oldchurch known as the Concezione Vecchia, which hadbeen built on the foundations of another old chapeldedicated to S. Rocco.The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sabato standsa mile away from the town. The church was built inmid-XVIIth century on a grotto in which a picture ofthe Virgin and Child was discovered. The Grotto ofS.Michele, which contains the rupestrian church, isat the foot of the town and also has dwellings of theImperial Age.The local recipes are based on “cardoncelli”, a typicallocal mushroom found in the surrounding hills.

Il territorio di Modugno presenta insediamenti cherisalgono al Neolitico, i resti della necropoli peucetaci riportano al IV secolo a.C. e le tracce della via Appiae della Minucio-Traiana ci parlano del periodo romano.La fondazione del borgo, denominato Midunium, risaleal tardo Medioevo.Modugno ha come simbolo il “cardo selvatico”, im-magine dello spirito di indipendenza. Infatti,nell'Ottocento, non mancarono presenze liberali chediedero il loro contributo all'Unificazione d'Italia.Piazza del Sedile, porta del Borgo antico, conservaancora intatto il suo fascino: tra archi e vicoli è possibilevisitare chiese e monumenti che ricordano la storiadi questa terra.

Modugno

In the territory of Modugno there are settlements thatgo back to the Neolithic Age. The remains of a Peuce-tian necropolis go back to the IVth century BC. Theremains of the Appian Way and of the Minucio-TrajanWay recall the Roman period. The foundation of thetown called Midunium goes back to the Middle Ages.The town has as its symbol the “cardo selvatico”(thistle) that represents its independent spirit. In fact,in the XIXth century the liberals of the town made acontribution to the Unification of Italy.Piazza Sedile, the gateway to the old town, is stillintact and it is possible to see churches and monumentsof historical interest.

A pochi chilometri da Bitetto, c’è Grumo Appula, doveè possibile visitare la Chiesa Madre e la ChiesaRupestre di Mellitto.
