Top Ten Out of State Literary MagazineGood Job Paw ‘N InkBY JOHARI.B ON FEBRUARY 10, 2016

FPCHS and I3 Tech Academy’s 2015 literary magazine received an Excellent rating from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). A literary magazine is a magazine devoted to recognizing multiple types of art such as short stories, poetry, book reviews, essays, photography, paintings, and so much more. A few teachers and students, who call themselves Paw N’ Ink, crafted their own magazine and named it “Literary Wasteland”. Mrs. Corinne Schaefer and Mrs. Rebecca Oshesky were the faculty advisors while Gregory Washington was the editor for the 2015-2016 magazine. Alexandra Feldman and Haylie Shiflett were the type editors, and Ciara Sprague was the design editor. The staff members of the magazine also included: Olivia Newhall, Briana Astrologo, Katelyn Mumma, Simone George, and Emily Morris. Kristina Santiago gave life to the magazine by creating an artistic cover. The group was also included in the top 10 out of the state of Florida!

NCTE is a program that promotes “Excellence in Student Literary Magazines”. The way NCTE rated the magazines this year was awarding one overall #1 magazine, with four superior nominated to be the best one, four excellent ones, and one above average. Paw N’ Ink received the Bright House Innovation Grant and the Flagler County Education Foundation Dell Trayer Grant that helped fund the project. The magazine was judged to be of highest quality and received a certificate of Excellent. Mrs. Oshesky encourages more students to get involved so that FPC will continue to receive grants and good ratings.

Many of FPC’s students contain hidden artistic and literary abilities. Art and writing inspiration comes from personal struggle and internal passion. The Paw N’ Ink group collected all of the work from different students who wanted to add their content to the magazine. Each person who contributed is given credit for their work. Paw N’ Ink accepts all kinds of artwork, both digital and paper, but they truly strive to combine technology into the artistic and literary aspects. Mrs. Oshesky explained, ”If you don’t want your name in the magazine you can submit work and be anonymous.” For those who may be interested and want to help FPC get more certificates, go to the Paw N’ Ink website to get involved.
