A year on since it acquired a German wind turbine manufactur- er, FKI plc has finally unveiled its new UK wind turbine production operation for its DeWind turbines. FKI held an Open Day in June to show-off their wind turbine manu- facturing capabilities to over 100 guests from industry, government, NGOs, and the media. The Open Day kicked off with a presentation from David Rowland, MD of DeWind UK operations who claimed that FKI was not in fact a newcomer to wind manufacture. Charles F. Brush of FKI’s Brush Electrical Machines was an early wind pioneer constructing the world’s first wind energy converter for electricity production back in 1888. The device had over 70 cedar wood blades with a 17m blade diameter. A far cry from today’s machines but, as noted by many, some interesting and not widely known information on the company’s early experiences in wind. Today based at its 90 acre Loughborough facility, FKI has the capacity to produce over 130 wind turbines of up to 2MW power rating. At present the opera- tion is producing 2 turbines per week having shipped its first tur- bine last Christmas. Sarah Kydd, Head of Renewables UK wel- comed the new facility and passed on a message from the newly installed UK Energy Minister, Stephen Timms saying: "The opening of this facility is excellent news for manufacturing and jobs in the region and for the UK wind energy market as a whole. Our aim is to increase the amount of energy generated by renewable sources and to cut our carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2050. This is a significant step in developing the renewable energy supply chain necessary to meet these targets." DeWind was acquired by the Energy Technology group of FKI plc in June last year and due to the rapid development of wind power expected in the UK over the com- ing years, FKI decided to locate one of its global manufacturing sites in the UK. Reg Gott Managing Director of FKI Energy Technology group highlighted the synergies between FKI’s expertise and DeWind’s experiences to date in wind turbine manufacturing. He highlighted FKI’s 100 years of experience in power systems equip- ment manufacture and supply with expertise in manufacture of turbo- generators, low voltage generators, switch gears and transformers and run-of-river & pumped storage hydro. The company also has expertise in measurement and con- trol (wide area SCADA systems rel- evant for application in wind farm development); offshore electrical power and management systems and local and embedded genera- tion. FKI intends to develop wind manufacturing operations at other existing sites in Pilsen, Czech Republic and Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
