WEEK OF OCTOBER 7, 2009

Church Family and Friends,

My nephew and his wife recently went to see a comedian in concert. They really enjoyed themselves and shared a lot of laughs. One observation my nephew made

was that the comedian was able to make comments that were not the least bit

humorous, but the response was always a roar of laughter. What made it so great?

Here are several thoughts:

1. People had a longing for fun and laughter - a desire to be touched and encouraged;

2. People prioritized the opportunity - they put it on their schedule and guarded the date;

3. People invited others to go with them - they knew what a great experience it would be

and wanted others to experience it for themselves; 4. People probably took the initiative to go and pick up friends - to enjoy the “fellowship”

and to make the evening more convenient;

5. People went with an expectation of laughing and enjoying themselves - no personal

agenda, no distractions, just prepared to have fun; 6. People participated through their attention, openness, and laughter;

7. Afterwards, people talked about their experience with others.

Wow! That sounds familiar.

1. We were created to relate to God through salvation and a daily relationship.

2. We need to prioritize the opportunity to worship and be with God’s people.

3. We need to be deliberate and consistent to invite others to worship with us.

4. We should be willing to do whatever it takes to bring others to the house and family of God.

5. We should always come to worship with an expectant heart - anticipating God’s

presence and activity among us.

6. We should be a participant - singing, praying, giving, serving and searching the Word

of Truth and applying what we learn to our lives. 7. We should share with others what God is doing in our lives.

Could it be that people put more effort into being entertained than in worshiping and serving the

Living God? The Psalmist wrote, “I was glad when they said unto me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord.’” Maybe God deserves more from us!

“Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock

of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. (Psalm 95:1-2)

Singing is an important part of our congregational worship. Scripture is full of passages that tell us to sing to the Lord. Paul tells us to “speak to one another with

psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.” (Eph. 5:19) It’s a beautiful thing to hear a congregation lift their voices together in praise and worship of the Almighty God. We

know through scripture that God is blessed when we extol Him through song. In hymns and choruses, we learn scripture, the doctrines of our faith, and invite the Lord’s very

presence to be with us as we sing of His greatness. Again, Paul writes, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and

as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (Col. 3:16)

Jesus said that “a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth…God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in

spirit and in truth.” (Jn. 4:23,24) Romans 12 teaches that our spiritual act of worship is offering our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This is our spiritual act

of worship. This is something that is to be done all day, every day. Worship begins in

the individual heart. It becomes part of our lifestyle. I read an article this week that puts all this in perspective: “People who don’t worship the other six days, who think

worship is something you do on Sunday, are generally spectators on Sunday morning and not worshipers. We sometimes act as if we’re spectators to worship… That’s not at

all right. We participate in worship, and we are worshipers because He is the King.” Worship and praise God because of who He is. Worship Him before you come into the have expsanctuary this Sunday morning. Be in an attitude of praise and worship long

before you arrive at church. Let our congregational worship be an overflow of what we

erienced individually through the week. And wait in expectation of what God will do!

Brian

Didn’t you know that it’s sexy to be an atheist? That’s right. It’s the latest trend (if you want to call it that). And atheists are no longer the sour, bitter people that

we once saw in generations past, such as Madylyn Murray O’Hair whose life ambition was to stop kids from praying. No, now they’re a smiling, jovial mass quick in their

quips and frequenters of late night TV. After all, they are not coming to debate—in their minds, the debate has already been settled—no, they’re coming to declare. The

other night, I caught a segment of The Colbert Report, during which Stephen Colbert interviewed Richard Dawkins, the staunch evolutionist and adamant atheist. The

laughs were many—as were the categorical statements of the impossibility that there is a God. By Dawkins’s tone, one would have thought he were dismissing an idea such as the existence of fairies or leprechauns—he could not imagine why people were hung up on this idea of a God. It was time for

people to grow up and stop believing in childish things such as the existence of God. Ricky Gervais, comedian and creator and star of the British version of The Office, is a perfect example of this

“enlightenment.” In an interview with James Lipton on Inside the Actor’s Studio, Gervais spoke of how Jesus was once his “superhero”—that is until he realized that his mother (who had been making him

go to church) didn’t even believe in Jesus—that she had been hiding the “truth” from him and had been using Jesus as “an unpaid babysitter.” He “became an atheist in an hour” at 8 years old.

Gervais then asked, “If there is a God, then why did he make me an atheist? That was his first mistake.” Sounds like sound reasoning to me. A lot of these statements by the new atheists would be comical if they weren’t so tragic. Their reasoning is absolutely abysmal (for reasons that I don’t have

time to go into in this brief article), and yet they state their conclusions matter-of-factly, as if you’ve been out of the loop the whole time: “Oh yea, didn’t you know? There’s no God. Yea, that’s old

news! Where have you been?” This latest development in our culture is personal for me. First of all, I keep hearing of Christians I went to school with (some of whom were going into ministry) who have

now declared themselves atheists. Second, as a youth minister, I know that many teenagers growing up in churches do not have a biblical worldview and have not been taught how to defend their faith—

much less to own their faith—and so when they go off to college, they quickly drop out of the whole church scene because it was never real to them. That’s why we here at Lyman—especially in our

Student Ministry—are very passionate about equipping our students with a biblical worldview and going down deep in our study of the Scriptures. We are all about having a good time, but our activities do not exist for themselves—they exist to draw us closer to Christ—because the last thing we

want is to produce another generation of Richard Dawkinses or Ricky Gervaises. “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” Yes, but right now, it’s cool to be a fool.
