Filipino Firsts – NT ‘pride in the Filipino’

Filipinos all over the world are known to do well in different fields of endeavour. FAANT, Inc.,

under the leadership of President Oscar Parian, launched the ‘Filipino Firsts - NT’ project. This is a continuing project because for as long as FAANT, Inc. exists, many more Filipino Firsts NT will happen.

Filipino Firsts NT aims to document in an official honour roll to give recognition to, and

make Filipino-Australians proud and aware of achievements by our kabayans here in Darwin and the NT as a whole. Many kabayans in the NT are recognized in business, education, medicine, performing arts, sports, etc. but little is known about them. FAANT, Inc. aims to give recognition and acknowledge the achiever, e.g., Filipino Firsts in Education, Science and Technology; Filipino Firsts in Medicine and Allied Professions; Filipino Firsts in Arts, Music and Entertainment; Filipino Firsts in Sports; Filipino Firsts in Business; etc. To be a part of this honor roll, the following criteria must be satisfied – 1) the achievement is a source of pride for the Filipino community in the NT; and either (a) the candidate is the first Pinoy to achieve it in the NT or (b) the candidate is the best achiever or performer in a particular undertaking (e.g., best in the sport). FAANT, Inc. strongly encourage Filipinos in the NT to share with the community any achievement to be acknowledged if they believe they deserve to be included in the roll.

A ‘Filipino Firsts NT’ of note is Cynthia Molina’s Order of Australia in 1983 – first Filipino and first Asian in the NT to achieve the award. Cynthia’s various works included the YWCA, the National Council of Women, the Good Neighbour Council, the Lions Club and the Quota Club.

Other ‘Filipino Firsts NT’ are: Lino Molina – first president of the Filipino Association of the Northern Territory and ; Dr. Rene Peñaloza – first Filipino Honorary Consul in the NT; Rose Peñaloza – first Filipino Dietician appointed in the NT; Dr. Cristeta Kabasares Salandanan – first Filipino doctor/medical officer in Darwin Renal Dialysis

The Filipino Australian Association of the NT (FAANT), established in 1973, plays an important role in organizing

community events such as the Barrio Fiesta, Harmony Day Youth Concert and the anniversary celebration of the

Philippine Independence. It manages the Filipino Community Centre at Batten Road. FAANT also provides support

services to its members. It is active in promoting social and recreational activities for the community such as its very

own basketball league.

FAANT has traditionally celebrated the Philippine Independence Day on June 12 at the

Filipino Community Centre. The 116th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine

Independence was observed with a Dinner-Dance on the 7th of June 2014 at the Filipino

Community Centre.

The theme for this year is “Celebrating the Renaissance of the Filipino Pride: Our Values,

Faith and Culture”. A cultural show which depicts a blend between life and work of Filipinos in

Darwin and the cultural aspects of Filipino life in rural Philippines highlighted the celebrations.

The special intention of this event is for the proceeds to support FAANT’s Typhoon Haiyan

Rehabilitation Program.

Barrio Fiesta 2014 In addition to the traditional crowning of

the Mutya ng Barrio Fiesta (Little Princess of the Festival) or Lakambini ng Barrio Fiesta (Queen of the Festival), this year’s festivities also featured the Megaworld International MEGAVOICE Darwin singing competition. The winner will compete for the title of "The Megavoice International Champion” in Manila.

The Barrio Fiesta has been a catalyst for young Filipino Australians to develop their artistic talents in the performing arts. It helped them to develop their cultural identity and grow confident in recognising their heritage. It has positively changed the self-image of young Filipino-Australians about themselves.

The Barrio Fiesta has grown and gained a reputation as one of the five largest ethnic festivals in Darwin at the present time. The hugely successful Barrio Fiesta had attracted the largest crowd gathered at one single time at the Filipino Community Centre by far.

Harmony Day 2014 The fourth Darwin Waterfront Harmony Soiree held on Saturday 31 May 2014 was spiced-up

with performances from the Filipino community.

Dances and music showcasing the rich and diverse

Filipino culture delighted the evening’s multi-cultural audience.

The Darwin Waterfront Harmony Soiree is a collaborative effort

by the Northern Territory Government, Darwin Waterfront

Corporation, Darwin Community Arts and the

Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory.

Fund-raising project

2014 The Filipino Australian Association of

the Northern Territory (FAANT, Inc.) and

the wider Filipino community established

a centralized NT FIL-OZ associations fund-

raising project for the victims of the super

typhoon Haiyan.

The entire Darwin Community was

invited to a fund-raising Benefit Concert

for the victims of typhoon Haiyan at the

Filipino Centre. Then, a fund-raising lunch

was held at Curves, Adina Vibe

Waterfront where everyone was treated

to a 3-course meal with champagne on

arrival. Soundtrip NT, FiloJammers, other

Filipino artists, and local businesses joined

hands in organising a fundraising event at

the Filipino Community Centre.

14

Filipino Mass We would like to invite everyone to a Filipino Mass every 2nd Sunday of the month from

10:30-11:30 am to be held at the Holy Family Parish at 1 Calytrix Road, Karama. The mass

celebrant is Fr. Mon Libot CMF.

Sinulog 2014

The Sinulog Festival, highlighted with the traditional and ritual dance in honor of Santo Niño,

was observed by Darwin Filipinos. The Sinulog dance is usually accompanied by the sound of the

drums. Through the dance, the devotees keep moving two steps forward followed by one step

backward. While dancing, people chant petitions and thanksgivings to the Santo Niño.
