From the Pastor . . .

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,

that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4, ESV)

March The month of March in Kansas is unpredictable. Remember – in like a lion, out like a lamb vs in like a lamb, out like a lion? Surely, I am not the only one who learned that in school. The unpredictability of the weather interrupted our Life Building Weekend last year. I am praying that won’t happen this year.

If you are reading this before the weekend of February 29th – March 1st (and I hope you are!) I want to encourage you to attend the concert on Saturday, February 29th at 6:00pm, and bring a friend or two, to hear Scott Fraker’s concert…and then be sure to participate in the Sunday meetings at Sunday School, Worship and again Sunday evening at 6:00pm on March 1st. You’ll be glad you did! There will be a free will offering received at each service.

The following Sunday, March 8th, is our annual American Baptist Women’s Sunday. This year’s speaker is Rev. Jennifer Schneider, Associate Executive Minister of our region. Join us as we support our American Baptist women and hear Rev. Schneider encourage us from the Word.

March has five Sundays so we will be receiving an offering for the ministry in Ukraine led by Elisey Pronin on March 29th. This offering will go towards offsetting some of the start-up expenses as they have moved into their new facility. Please prayerfully participate in this special offering.

The first Sunday in April (5th) will be Palm Sunday with the celebration of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem marked by a children’s parade of palms. Please bring your whole family as we begin Holy Week remembering our Lord’s final entry into Jerusalem before His death.

On Thursday of Holy Week (April 9th) we will gather at 7:00pm to remember Christ’s last supper with His disciples when He washed their feet and gave them the New Command to love each other as He loved them. The Maundy Thursday service will be a service of reflection and Communion. Please join us.

Then on Easter Day, April 12th, we will celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection beginning with a community Sunrise Service at 7:00am hosted by the Paola Christian Church (also including the Paola United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church). This is a great way to begin the celebration of our Lord’s resurrection. Later that morning at First Baptist there will be an Easter Continental Breakfast at 9:15 in the Fellowship Hall, and an Easter Egg Hunt at 9:45am (with learning stations) in the Youth Room. The Easter Celebration will conclude with a joyful Worship Celebration at 10:25am. Join us this Holy Week as we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus which is the central focus of our faith.

If you are looking for an adult Sunday school class to join, the Discovery Sunday School class would like you to try our class. At the moment we are a small class, but we are looking to grow. We meet in Room #315 on the second floor. Terrie Cole is the teacher for this class. We are very relaxed in our classroom style. We tend to study books of the Bible going back and forth between Old Testament and New Testament. We also try to do outreach to those in need throughout the year. Please come by and check us out.

Thanks for your support! The preschool recently received a check for $202 from the Caps-to-Cash program! Please continue to bring in the specially marked caps.

Lawn Mowing Volunteers It’s time to prepare for lawn care! We are looking for volunteers to mow the church lawn this spring and summer. The church has a push mower and a riding mower to use. Volunteers should be available to mow the lawn later in the week so it looks nice on Sunday mornings, and should be flexible if and when it rains. Please contact the church office if you would be available to serve the church in this manner. If you volunteered last year and are not able to do so this year, please return the keys to the garage to the church office. Thank you!

REACHING OUT

CE Board & Currier Circle, Thank you so much for the gift card at Christmas. I greatly appreciate your love and support.

Brittany Salisbury

Thank you for sending the card and gift card for Christ-mas. It’s much appreciated.

Justin Salisbury

As I write this, there is a possibility of snow in the forecast, even though the temperature neared 60◦ this past weekend! Like everyone else, I’m very tired of winter and ready for spring to arrive. With springtime comes new life and rejoicing; we have the very best example of that in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Do you have new life in Him? Come to celebrate at all the Easter festivities, including the Kid’s Easter Egg Hunt at 9:45 on Easter morning. It will be held on the top floor this year, where kids will hunt empty eggs, then exchange them for prizes at stations where they will hear different parts of the Easter story. There are also Lenten calendars with prayers and scripture readings, similar to the Advent calendars we hand out, for families or individuals to help remember the importance of Easter. Pick one up from the table next to the sound booth.

The VBS planning team for 2020 is now forming! We will have our first meeting on March 10 at 2:00 pm. If you’d like to be part of the planning team, or if you’d like first choice of roles for the week, please call me ASAP! Mark your calendar June 8-12.

We had a wonderful “Kid’s Fun Day” Monday, February 17. We made 38 gifts for the residents of Vintage Park, delivered them to residents, performed a bell choir song, and told some great jokes as well. Back at the church, we made crafts, played games, had a devotion and an object lesson, and enjoyed a movie along with lunch and snacks. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Teddy Cook, Carmel Smith and Elizabeth Smith for helping!

Kids for Christ is in full swing, despite a couple missed weeks thanks to the snow. Come to enjoy delicious home-made dinners at 5:30 on Wednesdays. Our schedule for the next month is:

March 4: The Welcoming Father March 11: A Widow’s Small Gift March 18: No KFC - Spring Break March 25: The Entrance of the King

Together In Christ, Sarah

This month I would like to shine some light on a couple of people you are probably familiar with…. Gale Floyd and Elizabeth Smith. These women have been active in the Paola Association of Church Action (PACA) for many years.

Gale works with the PACA Food Bank at the First Presbyterian Church. She not only helps people get food distributions, but she helps to organize and collect the donations as well. The food bank hours for pick up are on Wednesday from 11:00am to 2pm, but Gale is often there on Tuesday to help get orders ready for distribution. Would you like to help out at the food bank on occasion? Gale is looking for someone to come alongside her to help when needed. If you think you might want to check it out….in May there is a BIG food drive through the post office mail carriers and Gale could really use some help bringing in and sorting the donations.

Elizabeth is currently the PACA representative for the Foster Grandparent program. This program sends adults into the classrooms to help teachers and students. There is even some pay available for helping with the children! Foster Grandparents are looking for more people who would like to help at the schools, and Elizabeth would really like to find someone to take her place as the Foster Grandparent representative. Both groups meet 6-8 times a year. One of Elizabeth’s favorite parts of being the Foster Grandparent representative is attending their special recognition dinner held once a year in October. Both Gale and Elizabeth would be glad to speak to you about what they do. They would also love to encourage you to help those in need in our community.
