“Robert Lee Morris, Jewelry Artist… Remembering Joan Sonnabend”
Monday, September 10th
6:30PM Reception/Lecture
63 Park Plaza, Boston, MA
please RSVP: 508.970.3240 or [email protected]
Robert Lee Morris A self taught jewelry artisan, Robert Lee Morris was discovered at the Putney School craft fair in 1972 when an assistant to Joan Sonnabend bought one of his necklaces and wore it to work. Joan and her business partner Phyllis Rosen loved the necklace, and after viewing the collection in Boston, gave him exclusive representation in their new artist jewelry gallery called Sculpture to Wear, located in the Plaza Hotel in New York City, at the time owned by Roger and Joan Sonnabend. The collection was a success and his famous oversized brass bubble collar was featured on the cover of Vogue. In 1977 the Plaza was sold and Robert Lee Morris opened his own gallery called ARTWEAR, located in SOHO which quickly became an international hub for wealthy clients, celebrities and fashion editors to discover exciting contemporary jewelry. For twenty years Robert Lee Morris represented over 400 jewelry artists and hosted over 50 exhibitions. In 2011 the Robert Lee Morris company was sold to Miriam Haskell and today can be found in specialty stores such as Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel, the mid market line called RLM Soho is sold at Macy’s, Lord & Taylor and Dilliards. His numerous awards include the COTY for his jewelry collection for Calvin Klein in 1981, the CFDA award for his work for Donna Karan and ARTWEAR in 1985, the DeBeers Diamonds Today award in 1999 and a CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award in 2007.

Joan Sonnabend opened her tiny gallery at the Plaza Hotel in New York in 1973. She started with a 100-piece collection of “sculptures to wear.” Included in the pins, necklaces, bracelets, and rings were works by such artists as Man Ray, Pol Bury, Picasso, Arp, and Calder. She was never a jeweler, but an art dealer. From the time she graduated Sarah Lawrence with an art degree, she always knew she wanted to open a gallery. After she opened Sculpture to Wear, many artists sought her out to create items for the gallery. She became friendly with many of them, and maintained these relationships for many years. In 1973, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, mounted a show called “Jewelry As Sculpture as Jewelry.” The intent of the show was to elevate body ornament to the level of art. It showcased artists and jewelers who were especially interested in using various and unconventional materials. Joan Sonnabend’s gallery at the Plaza was in part responsible for the exhibition and the creation of a market for artists’ jewelry. For me personally, Joan opened my eyes to the interplay between jewelry, sculpture, adornment, and art. She always believed in the power of art and remained an art dealer until her passing.

Of her work, Copley stated, “Surrealist inspired and influenced I, for a long time, tried to transform the everyday, the common objects, that are taken for granted into poetry to wear.” $4,000-5,000

Lots 716-745 descended in the family of Mrs. Hope Goddard Iselin of New York and Newport, Rhode Island. Mrs. Iselin was an avid horsewoman, golfer, and accomplished sailor who competed on an international level. Her husband, C. Oliver Iselin, who defended the America’s Cup four times, was perhaps the most famed American yachtsman of the late 19th century. The pair’s vast inherited wealth, competitive spirit, and devotion to aristocratic sports made them one of the most fabulous couples of the Gilded Age. Mrs. Iselin was the first woman to compete in the America’s Cup (1895 Defender, 1899 Columbia, 1903 Reliance). In all three races, she fulfilled the critical strategic role of timekeeper, the crew member entrusted to judge when to turn for the starting line. Her participation in what is still a male-dominated sport caused controversy at the time, inspiring even the DAR to comment on her behavior. Mr. Iselin was a highly successful and daring competitor whose archrival was Lord Dunraven of the Royal Yacht Squadron; at one tense point in their competitive careers, they were widely expected to fight a duel. Horse breeding was another passion for the couple, who maintained racing stables in England and America. They were often invited to share the Prince of Wales’ box at Ascot, Mrs. Iselin having been a favorite of Bertie’s since she defeated his cousin the Grand Duke Michael at a golf tournament in 1900. The couple’s philanthropic interests included schools and hospitals. They also donated the grounds on which the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame is situated.
