Myth 1LCC courses do not transfer to four-year universities.FactAll of LCC's core courses, required for any bachelor's degree, transfer to any Texas college or university, and most other schools.

Myth 2Students only attend Laredo Community College because they can’t get in to a four-year university.FactMany students attend community college for convenience, family, job, or financial considerations. Attendingcommunity colleges makes sense, purely for economic reasons. Community college students save on tuitionand also on boarding because they can live at home during the first two years of school.

Myth 3LCC’s tuitions is inexpensive, so the education is not high quality.FactLCC’s comprehensiveness in academic offering and the student centered focus on teaching add greatvalue to the education experience of the students. Quality is not based on prestige or emphasis on re-search or physical facilities. It is based on the commitment of the faculty and staff members to help thestudents succeed.

Myth 4No one successful goes to community college.FactThe list of successful individuals who graduated from community college is extensive, ranging from busi-ness CEOs to performing artists. Below is a very short list of notable LCC and national community collegealumni:

• Rod Lewis: President and Chief Executive Officer of Lewis Energy Group • Sylvia Bruni: Executive Director of Children’s Advocacy Center Laredo-Webb County• Norma Eliza Quintero: Professional recording artist and educator• Tom Hanks: Oscar-winning actor• Calvin Klein: Fashion designer• Walt Disney: Founder of Disney World and Disneyland

Myth 5A degree from LCC is not as good as a university degree.FactAn LCC degree can take you straight into the workforce or to an elite four-year university.

Myth 6Community colleges have low academic standards.FactWhile community colleges offer “open admission,” all courses are not open admission. Students have totake the THEA or T-COMP tests in order to qualify for college-level work. Technical and special programshave high standards and students compete to enroll. However, at LCC, students are offered extra supportto succeed in their courses.

Like most misconceptions, community college myths are based on elements of truth. But like most misconceptions, these myths lead to mistaken beliefs that could warp your ability to

choose the right post-high school educational path for you.
