MAYAH in modern applications

Reduced Costs – Increased Flexibility and Quality: UMTS/3GP Reporting

DVB-H reaching millions of mobiles and PDAs with audio-video content

High Quality 5.1 Multichannel withCENTAURI® II 3300/3301

The new CENTAURI® II Audio Codecs offermultichannel audio en-/decoding,streaming and transmission in a widerange of audio formats. Multichannelaudio transmission is a rapidly expandingmarket and the requirements vary greatlydepending on the specific application. Sofar, two major applications have beenaddressed using the CENTAURI® II3300/3301:

- Production quality for contribution anddistribution using linear audio, apt-X orEnhanced apt-X in IP and/or E1 networkswith bit rates between 1 and 6 mbps.

- monitoring/pre-listening applicationsusing AAC or AAC+SBR (MPEG 4 AAC HE)in IP and/or ISDN networks with bitrates as low as 160 kbps.

This flexible concept allows CENTAURI® tobe used in various environments and incombination with Dolby E or Dolby AC-3technology.

Existing CENTAURI® I or II 3000/3001scan be easily upgraded to multichannelcapability with the appropriate multi-channel audio I/O. Both digital andanalog versions are available.

Carmen opera in 5.1 live from Graz to Vienna

In June 2005, ORF transmitted the operaCarmen from the Franz-Liszt hall in Grazto the ORF Broadcasting Center in Viennafor the first time using multichannel 5.1audio. The successful transmission

continued via satellite on ORF 1 (÷1) tothe listeners. The 6 discrete audiochannels were connected directly, viaAES/EBU, between the digital mixingconsole and the MAYAH multichannelequipment; an AES/ADAT optical converterand the multichannel audio codecCENTAURI® II 3301for realtime encodingand streaming. For the desired highquality, Enhanced apt-X was used with atotal bit rate of 152 kbps net. The IPsignal was connected to the ATM-networkof ORF (L-NET) and the audio was thendecoded with another CENTAURI® II 3301at ORF’s Broadcasting Center in Vienna. The multichannel audio signal was thenturned into DolbyE (5.1) and thenencoded in AC-3 in order to be insertedinto the multiplexer for the satelliteuplink. This modern and efficient way ofmultichannel transmission allows ORF touse cost-effective IP connections fortransmission and to avoid using additionalencoders. ORF considers it particularlyadvantageous to use CENTAURI® 3301

bi-directionally, thus obtaining amonitoring signal of the final broadcastaudio. This shortens any activity in case oftransmission problems and simplifies thecontrol of the start and end of thebroadcasted multichannel program.

An identical configuration is used totransmit the ”Salzburger Festspiele” toVienna in 5.1 technique with CENTAURI®.

Economic efficiency; Bi-directional 5.1 via IP

Until now, multichannel audiotransmissions were very cost intensivebecause of equipment and line capacities. With CENTAURI® 3300/3301 this haschanged; the equipment is a standardMAYAH product with multichannel I/O.The required bit rates depend on theapplication and can be as low as 160kbps with AAC+SBR (MPEG 4 AAC HE) orup to 6 mbps with linear audio. As thebest compromise, Eapt-X with bitratesbetween 1 and 2 mbps is recommended.Connectivity via both IP and ISDN ispossible and access to such networks istoday standard .

Complex setup or plug and play?

The experience of ORF for their concerttransmissions between Graz and Viennademonstrates the simplicity of the MAYAHsolution, simply needing multichannelaudio connections and access to a networkwith the required capacity. Since theirinitial success, ORF have been using thesystem for further events, including somemobile installations; another example ofits plug-and-play simplicity.

DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting –Handheld) is the new digital broadcaststandard for the transmission of content tohandheld devices; developed by the DVBProject and recently published by ETSI(European Telecommunications StandardsInstitute).

DVB-H is based on the DVB-T standard fordigital, terrestrial television but enhancedand adapted to the special requirementsof pocket-size products, such as mobiles,PDAs, etc. It is expected to become amulti billion EUR business by 2010.

MAYAH’s first presentation of DVB-H wasat this years IFA in Berlin. At the IBC inAmsterdam MAYAH will be demonstrating”Mobile TV” using its new IO [io] 8001,

with AVC/ AAC Encoding, communicatingwith a server platform for mobile televisionand handsets/PDAs running AVC Playersfrom Fraunhofer IIS and others. Thanks toour extensive product range we will also bedemonstrating audio only via DVB-H,supporting stereo and multichannel audio.

MAYAH equipment enables mobileoperators to conduct DVB-H trials to testflexibility in bit rates and formats as wellas the level of acceptance for Mobile TVand audio by consumers.

Mobile data communications are evolvingquickly because of Internet, Intranet,Laptops, PDAs and the increasing need ofbusiness applications. 3G UMTS will bethe commercial convergence of conventio-nal telephony with mobile and informationtechnology.

The UMTS transport network is designedto deliver high speed, specific content tousers at mobile and temporary locations. For professional broadcast reportingMAYAH combined the strength of UMTSwith powerful encoding to achieve very lowbit rates.

CENTAURI® Audio Codecs offer a widerange of audio formats via IP; e.g UMTS, amobile paket service with up- anddownload and interconnectivity with VPNnetworks for increased security. Realtimeaudio streaming/reporting over the UMTSnetwork requires algorithms capable ofachieving the lowest possible bit rates inorder to assure a continuous broadcast.CENTAURI® offers the newest version ofAAC+SBR (MPEG 4 AAC HE) with bit ratesas low as 24, 32 or 48 kBit/s. The extensive UMTS coverage alreadyavailable in most industrialised nationsmeans that high quality, mobile reportingis available in large parts of the worldtoday.

WDR premieres UMTS (3G) realtime audiotransmission

In preparation for the Pope´s visit toCologne for the World Youth Day somespecial requirements needed to be met forthe audio transmission. A live audio linkwas required from a ship on the Rhine tothe WDR studios in the centre of Colognefrom where they would be broadcast. As analternative to satellite transmission, UMTSwas considered and successfully tested.MAYAH CENTAURI® codecs were used foraudio streaming at low bit rates via aVodafone UMTS data card into a VPNnetwork connected to another CENTAURI®,all bi-directional.

Economic advantages of UMTS (3G) reporting

Reporting typically needs particular equip-ment and network or satellite connections. Both require fixed or temporary installationsand incurr rental charges. Satellite needsspecialised equipment such as a dish,

modulator, etc. and provisions thatadequate satellite capacity is available at acertain time. Terrestrial lines, such asISDN need pre-ordering at the responsibleTelcos.

UMTS (3G) has the advantage that theequipment is small, available and, due tothe mass market factor, low priced.Further, UMTS (3G) is an inceasinglyavailable service with extremely low feesfor data services – even flat rates exist andmake a lot of sense for realtime streaming.

Complex setup or plug-and-play?

MAYAH is offering its UMTS (3G) trans-mission solution as a plug-and-playpackage. It consists of two UMTSConnection Boxes, each carrying a PCMCIAUMTS Vodafone data card and the choiceof MAYAH CENTAURI® I or IIs, MERK II organymed en/decoders.

MPEG 4 part 10 AVC (H.264) – bringing video transmission to the next level

MPEG 4 part10, also known as H.264 or AVC is the state-of-the-artnew compression standard.

As with MPEG 4 part 2, MAYAH supports ISMA 2.0, a worldwide stan-dard for IP-based streaming, allowing seamless integration andinteroperability with other hardware-decoders, set-top boxes or softwareplayers offering the same ”multiple use” of a stream created by an IO [io] 8000.

MPEG 4 part 2 – proven technology in the IO [io] range

MPEG 4 part 2 is a mature, worldwide adopted standard for applica-tions ranging from video contribution (e.g. SNG) and corporatestreaming down to web casting using feature-sets of the new MPEG 4part 10, H.264/AVC compression standard.

The bandwidth used by MPEG 2 can be ”cut by half” when usingMPEG 4, allowing savings on transmission costs on satellite links, or by going to IP/DSL lines or E1/T1 lines.

The beauty of MPEG 4 part 2 ISMA compliant streaming is the inter-operability with ”any” ISMA compliant device such as set-top boxes orsoftware players like QuickTime, Real10, Windows Media Player*, VLCand many more.

In multicast mode one single stream created by the IO [io] 8000 canbe played back via the IO [io] 8000 as a decoder for broadcast qualityvideo and at the same time plays back on any of the above mentionedsoftware players or set-top boxes for e.g. monitoring applications orjournalist previewing.

MAYAH’s MPEG 4 part 2 implementation is optimized for ”low latency”up to full D1 SD-resolution video in the range of 500 ms for ”end toend” transmissions.

Happy BirthdayCENTAURI® – theworld’s first IPAudio Codec stillsets the standard

After five successfulyears we are proud toannounce the newCENTAURI® II GatewayMultichannel Codec

Five years ago we launched CENTAURI®, the world’s first

IP Audio Codec, featuring remarkable speed and unprece-

dented compatibility by utilizing MAYAH’s FLASHCAST®

technology. The first projects with CENTAURI® were the

European Soccer Championships in Belgium / The Nether-

lands in May 2000.

Now, after five successful years, in which the CENTAURI®

family has continued to grow in terms of possible hard-

and software options, most major Radio and TV Stations

worldwide are using or connecting to MAYAH CENTAURI®s

on a daily basis via ISDN, E1 and X.21/V.35 or, increas-

ingly, via IP in LANs and WANs as well as over the

Internet.

The next generation of CENTAURI®; the CENTAURI® II Multichannel

Audio Gateway – combining impressive plug-and-play simplicity

with power-user performance and features:

■ All broadcast interfaces –ISDN, Ethernet (multi-/unicast), X.21, E1

■ All broadcast algorithms –G.711, G.722, MPEG 1/2/2.5 Layer 2/3, AAC, AAC LD,MPEG 4 AAC HE, apt-X, Eapt-X, ADPCM4SB/MICDA,linear audio, J.41, J.57, mp3PRO, etc.

ganymed Product Family – new IP NetworkingSolutions for Audio Distribution.

The ganymed 1002A and PRO are the receiving end members for stereo audio via IP networks. They receive e.g. an RTP stream with MPEG 1 or 2

Layer 2, Layer 3, AAC encoded audio signals or even linear audio and convert those streams to analog (ganymed 1002A) and/or digital (ganymed

1002PRO) audio in professional level and format. The Ethernet-to-Audio ganymed products have been developed for applications receiving audio

in the field of ”InHouseStreaming”, Audio Contribution and Distribution. They are easily distinguishable from existing streaming solutions, thanks

to their broad range of quality levels, ranging from very low bit rates with AAC up to linear audio.

Thank selectable audio coding algorithms itis possible to cover widely varying require-ments and applications in the broadcastinghouse simultaneously and with the sameinstallation. Streams can be generated byproducts like CENTAURI® II 3000, 3300and CENTAURI® II 4000/4001 as well asthe ganymed 1102.

ganymed 1002 draws on the same tech-nology and know-how as MAYAH’s highlysuccessful and acclaimed CENTAURI®

which is used in the field of high qualityaudio transmission via synchronous andpacket orientated transmission networks.

ganymed 1002 can be used at the trans-mitter location to receive the digital audiosignal and provide it in analog or digitalform for the modulator for conventional

AM/FM or digital broadcasting. They canalso be found in studios for the inhousedistribution of audio.

Further applications are in the area of cor-porate networks, e.g. Point-of-Saleapplications for distributing advertising toshops or Point-of-Interest applications fordistributing news-announcements.
