1.1 Introduction

Business plays a major role within our society. It is a creative and competitive activity that continuously contributes to the shaping of our society. By satisfying the needs and wants people cannot satisfy themselves, businesses improve the quality of life for people and create a higher standard of living. It is a way for individuals to provide goods and services to consumers, and at the same time, produce a profit for themselves. Businesses are not only important because they provide the needs of the customers, but they also improve the economy and increase jobs for people within society which is an additional fact producing a higher standard of living. It makes our societies a higher standard of living. Unfortunately because of some circumstances, it make the business loss or even bankruptcy. But this can be avoided through the used of the businesses key factors of success.In this research paper, we would discuss the business about the Fishing Industry international, national and even local. There are different players in fishing industries in General Santos City specially the Jebo Tuna Handline. The business description like the company name their products business objectives its location their management specifically about the employees. We will tackle also the marketing strategies of Jebo Tuna Handline how they encourage a customers to buy their products. There general description and financial evaluation.1.2. Rationale of the studyThe purpose of this study is for us to understand the world of fishing industry. Fishing industries are one of the most leading businesses in General Santos City. This kind of study gives details about this industry specially theJebo Tuna Handline. To give us more knowledge about this company because we want to know further about fishing industry and the effect of it in General Santos City. As we go further in our study get to know more about the details not only about the fishing industry but also about the Jebo Tuna Handline. To elaborate the information about the company we examine their contributions to our society and economy. How they run the fishing business, their contribution to the society, negative and positive effect of into the society and to our economy. 1.3 Objective of the studyThe objectives of this research paper are to: comply the requirements in Finance223; introduced the fishing industry; and to give information about the Jebo Tuna Handline.1.4. Company Description

This chapter talks about the company. Jebo tuna handline was started by Mr. Ariston Polangcos in year 2000. They chose the name Jebo, for it was the combined name of the owner Jelyn and Bobong. The companys main office is located at Calumpang and their fishing boats were at the General Santos City Fish Port Complex.1.5 Management & Organizational SummaryThe Jebo Tuna Handline is a sole proprietorship form of business. This chapter also includes the personnel qualification that a person they need, duties and responsibilities to satisfy the management and the personnel salary structure. Lastly the organizational chart was also presented in this chart.1.6 Marketing SummaryThe things that are presented in this chapter are about the target market of the Jebo Tuna Handline who are the canning industires and the local markets, their market size and trends that includes the price and capacity of the company to satisfy their customers. It was also included here their competitors in this industry, the estimated market shares of the owner and boat captain. Marketing strategies to gain more customers, the brand name, products feature and quality are also presented in this chart.1.7 Technical SummaryThis chapter shows the location of the company. It includes the half of the portion of barangay Tambler where the fishing boats were located. The company do not provide a specific store/plant layout for their main office was at the house of the owner which is at the Calumpang. The facilities, equipments and utilities are also presented in this chapter.1.8 Socio Economic Significance SummaryFishing industries has pons and cons effect on the economy and society. It could help us increase our economic sales but you can only do fishing within the Philippine area. There is a greater in fishing and of the business firm abused our under water animals. It can also help our society through having additional employment and the number of tourist will increase in our country. The number of cached tuna every day is unstable, there will be a panic buying that will happen in the market if there are only few supplies of tuna and its rate will increase due to its insufficiency supply.

This chapter discuss about the industry background of Fishing Industry, the company history, uniqueness and potential of the business.

2.1 Industry BackgroundIt discusses the industry backgroundof Fishing Industry in International, National and Local market. Fishing Industry is a product of nature. Fishing is one of the form of job for people now a days and relaxation. It helps people now a days to have food on their table. It is one way also to make people enjoy and have fun with what they do. Fishing also enhances their skills and it makes them more close to nature. Fishing Industry includes any industry or activity concerned with taking, culturing, processing, preserving, storing, transporting, marketing or selling of fish products. Fishing Industry not just only help us in our daily life but it help us to be more close to nature and learn how to love it.2.1.1 InternationalFish are harvest by commercial fishing and aquaculture. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization the world harvest in 2005 consisted of 9.3 million tonnes captured by a commercial fishing in wild fisheries, plus 48.1 million tonnes by fish farms and additional 1.3 tonnes of aquatic plants. Were captured in wild fisheries and 14.8 million tonnes were produced by aquaculture and the number of individual fish caught in the wild has been estimated at 0.97-2.7 trillion per year. The top producing countries were the Peoples Republic of China excluding Hong Kong and Taiwan, Peru, Japan, The United States, Chile, Indonesia, Russia, India, Thailand, Norway and Ice Land. Those countries are accounted for more than half of the worlds production.The ocean covers 71% of the earths surface and 80% of the value marine resources are attributed to the fishing industry. The fishing industry has provoke various international disputes as wild fish capture rose to a peak about the turn of the century, and has since started a gradusl decline. Ice Land, Japan, China and Korea are some of the greater consumers of seafood in Asia while America, Chile and Peru are countries with high fish consumption. In Europe, Ice Land is one of the largestconsumers in the world. Fisheries are estimated to currently provide 16% of the world population protein. The fleshes of many fish are primarily valued as source of food. Fish markets are market place used in trade in and sale of fishes and other seafood. They can be dedicated to whole sale between fishermen and fish merchants or to sale of seafood to the individual consumers. Fish and other marine life are also be used for many other uses like pearls and mother of pearls, sharkskin and ray skin, sea horse, star fish, sea urchins and sea cucumber are used in traditional Chinese medicine. And others are used in Tyrian purple, sepia, wine and beer, fertilizer emulsion.2.1.2 NationalFor the past few decades Fishing is a way of life in the Philippines. The countrys coastline of at least 17, 460 km and 26.6 million of oceanic water is a heaven about one million fishers and Inland resources of at least 338, 000 ha of swaplands, 253, 000 ha of fresh waters and brackish water fishponds and another 250 ha of lakes, rivers, and reservoirs are the evidences of the vastness of this countrys fishery resource. Philippines is one of the most leading producer. In the year 1995, it was 12th among the top 80 fish producing countries with a total production of 2.3 million metric tonnes, accounting for 2% of the worlds 112.9 million metric tonnes of fish catch and the following year, it was 13th among the 51 top fish producing countries with a total fish production of 1.8 million tonnes. In the year 2001, the countrys fish yield further increased by 166, 101 metric tonnes fishing is already a part of a daily life in every Filipino fishernow a day.2.1.3 LocalGeneral Santos City is the largest of sashimi - grade tuna in the Philippines. In the early 1970 the title The Tuna Capital of the Philippines has become a tag to General Santos City also accounts for the second largest daily total catch of fish in the country after the City of Navotas in the National Capital Region. Locals in General Santos City boast that fishes and seafood do not come fresher than what is found in their locality. General Santos City Fishing Industry yields a total daily capacity of 750 metric tonnes of fish catch alone. Last year the total tuna and other fish landing in the General Santos Fish port complex went up by 11.31% for the five months that year over in the year 2013 and according to the Philippines Fisheries Authority it is the third consecutive year since 2011 that the volume of fish landings in the City has registered an annual increase. The record shows that the total fish volume landed at the fish port from January to May last year already reached 42, 897.56 metric tonnes compared to only 33, 363.83 MT in the five years of the year 2013.2.1.3.1 IndustryFishing Industries are one of the most leading industries not only in the Philippines but also in the whole world. Seafoods especially fish are in high demand because of its capacity to give nutrients and its good for our health. Fishing Industry includes any industry or activity concerned with taking, culturing, processing, preserving, storing, transporting, marketing or selling fish products.

2.1.3.2 The Product/ ServiceTuna is usually frozen whole round on board of the fishing vessels, but there are some instances that the tuna need to be frozen after catching. When the quotas reach, the service boat will deliver the frozen tuna to the port. Yellow fin, big eye tuna, and swordfish are some of the fish that is supplied by the Jebo fishing. And now, the Jebo expands their business into ring net like Gold key burot, tulay and squid.2.1.3.3 Major Players in the IndustryFishing industry is one of the most leading businesses in the Philippines. Jebo Fishing faces lots of its competitors. One of its major competitors is owned by our City Mayor, Mr.Ronnel River. The RD Fishing and the other competitors are the DTFI, San Andres Fishing Industry Inc., Amadeo, Frabel and many more. These competitors give a challenge to Jebo Fishing to enhance their performances in terms of catching and selling fish.2.1.3.4 CapacityGeneral Santos City Fishing Industry yields a total daily capacity of 750 metric tonnes of fish catch alone. Managing and developing people Manager dont manage people the same, they will manage each person according to what he needs and what motivates them to do their best. Strategic purchasing throung this, the company will have a control with the use of the raw materials available to purchase that will be enough for the production of the products. Physical resources finances, facilities and equipment are the big physical resources of the company. These resources must be handle properly in order to avoid future problem.

This world classport complex emerged as the regions principal trading port cateringthe SOCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City) economic growth area.They sell their tuna in the fishport were you can demand the price for a higher quality of tuna.There are two buyers of the industry first is Canning Companies like RDEX, Kingford and Citra Mina. Second is the Local buyers who are jambuleros.2.1.3.7 The Government Role There are agencies that the government established like Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Philippine government under the Department of Agriculture responsible for development, improvement, management and conservation of the Philippines fisheries and aquatic resources.Philippine Fisheries Development Agency (PFDA) also performs a supportive role of providing the fishing industry with a nationally integrated fisheries infrastructure by strong institutional linkages. Particularly, the services it offers to the industry are management, operations, and development of regional commercial fish port complexes located in strategic areas in the Philippines. Establishment of ice plants and cold storages, municipal fish ports, warehouses factory buildings and other structures necessary for the development of the fishing industry. Lease of commercial and industrial areas within the fish port complexes. Conduct of training on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points and Good Manufacturing Practices and on the operation and management of municipal fish port and monitoring, compilation, and dissemination of fishery statistics and information necessary in the conduct of business activities and policy formulation.2.2 Company History and BackgroundIn the year 1997 Mr. Ariston Bhong Polangcos start a very small business he financed a small fishing boat and after that he meet a buyer from big company here in Gensan Fish port. In the year 2000 he realized to put up his own fishing boat. They can gain more customers because of their Trade mark. Productive employees give them good quality tuna. 2.2.4.2 WeaknessesThe weaknesses of the company are to encounter profit and loss and less delivered tuna products due to natural calamity. 3.1 Form of Business OrganizationA sole proprietorship, also known as the sole trader or simply a proprietorship, is a type of business entity that is owned and run by one natural person and in which there is no legal distinction between the owner and the business.3.2 Organizational Chart

When the economic demand is high, the price will be 280 up.4.4 Promotional StrategyPromotional strategies are one way of making the company and its product to be well known in industries and in market.4.4.1 AdvertisingThe Jebo Tuna Handline used calendars and t-shirts as a medium of advertisement. It is the way of making their company and product to be known in the fishing industry and in the market. 4.4.2 PublicityThere are well known because of the good quality of tuna that they sell. In Fishport, if the company has a good quality of tuna, they will be known for others will promote their name and their product.4.4.3 Other Promotional ActivitiesThe company also provide dispatchers. Dispatchers are the individuals who sell the product of other persons specially to the newly involved in this kind of business who doesnt know how to sell their products. The Jebo Tuna Handline sold the products of other people and in return they will get small amount of interest.

In this chapter we will discuss the Location map, Vicinity map and the store/plant layout of the company. It also included here the product needs, facilities and equipment, the utilities and water disposal of the company.

5.1 Location AnalysisLocation analysis is the analysis of the place where the company is exactly located. It includes the location map, vicinity map and the store/plant layout.5.1.1 Location MapThis is the location map of the Jebo Tuna Handline. This is the map of General Santos City Fish Port Complex. As what we can see it has four markets, these four markets, this markets serves as the store of the company who catch and sell fishes.

5.1.2 Vicinity MapThe Vicinity map is the map where you can find the place of the company to a certain barangay. As shown above, the Jebo Tuna Handline is located at Barangay Tambler, G.S.C, where in General Santos City Fish Port Complex is located.

5.1.3 Store/Plant LayoutThere is no exactly a store/plant layout because they dont have a store. After catching a tuna, they directly sell it to the customers like the canning and jambuleros.5.2Product NeedsThe Jebo Tuna Handline needs the different kinds of tuna like malasugi, yellow fin tuna and etc.5.2.1 FacilitiesThe Jebo Tuna Handline use table and wooden ladder for their facilities.Table for the placing of the tuna fish and wooden ladder for going up and down to the boat.5.2.2 EquipmentJebo Tuna Handline used fishing boots as their equipment in order to sail and catch fish.5.2.3 UtilitiesJebo Tuna Handline use water and diesel as their utilities. They use water for cleaning the tuna fish and cleaning their boat. Diesel they use diesel for the gasoline of their boat.5.2.4 Waste DisposalSolid waste disposal is recycled into fishsmeal plants or treated along with the municipal waste, whereas liquid waste is disposed of through the municipal sewage system or directly into a water body.

This information helps the company in terms of decision making.6.1.1.1 Income statementThe income statement represents the revenues realized from the sale of commodities and service produce by the company, as well as the cost and expenses incurred in connection with the realization of said revenues. The income statement that are represented here are the actual income statement but not in a previous year. Its more than two to three years already. There are two different years of income statement presented for the purpose of comparing by the used of financial ratios. As shown above, the company has the ability to payits current liabilities in year 1 which is 7.48 than in year 2 which is 5.70. the company also used their accounts receivable many time in year 1 which is 45.51 times than in year 2 which is 20.69 times and the company allows 17.40 days in year 2 for collection period than n year 1 which only they allow for 7.91 days. 6.2 Sources and Uses of FundsThe sources of Jebo Tuna Handline werecome from the owner itself. They used these funds in their operating expenses because they dont have any foundations to support.6.3 Budgeting PlanThey conduct meeting every after two months to present their expenses in fuel/diesel. Their salary expenses will be presented yearly since their salary is stable.Chapter VIISocio Economic Evaluation

In this chapter, we will know the positive and negative effects of the company to the economy and society.

7.1 Effects to the Economy There are two effects that the company give to the economy. These are positive effect and the negative effect.7.1.1 Positive EffectOne of the positive effects that the Jebo Tuna Handline gives to the economy is through the sale of their products. These will increase the numbers of buyers in the market and lead to a higher rate income that will be record and gives the title of a Productive company in the economy.7.1.2 Negative EffectThe Jebo Tuna Handline can also give a lower economic growth through a small catched of tuna due to a bad weather or conditions of their fishing boats. Another reason is the band of fishing to go beyond the Indonesian teritory. It leads to a smaller territory where in the company catches tuna.7.2 Effects to the SocietyThere are two effects that the company give to the society. These are positive and negative effect.7.2.1 Positive Effects to the SocietyIt gives a positive outcome in our society like an additional employment. Through a higher income and production, the company can cater another individual who need a job. Second is it gives a popularization to the society because of the good feedback from the buyers inside and outside the society. Lastly, many investors or businessman will choose this kind of business here in Gensan for it has a good quality of tunas.7.2.2 Negative EffectDue to a bad weather or condition, the catches of tuna will be lessen and if it cannot satisfied the demand of the customers, it may cause to a panic buying and lead to the company to minimize their product and sell it minimally.

Chapter VIIIFindings, Conclusions and Recommendation

In this chapter we will be know the obstacles that the company is facing, some of its potential problems the alternative course we can give and ourrecommendations.

8.1 ObstaclesSome obstacles that the company encounter is when one of their unit has a problem. For example the fishing boat wouldnt start for it has damage in the engine.8.2 Potential ProblemsIn General Santos City, tuna is the most sealable fish and the company do some exports. There are times the company caught many, few or more, because the numbers of caught tuna is not stable.8.3 Alternative Course ActionIn order to avoid loss of income in times of crisis, the best alternative solution they can do is to lessen their expenses. They can only do this by buying the exact amount of diesel they needed, by putting off the electrical things which is not use and by omitting the unnecessary things.

8.4 RecommendationThe recommendation that we can give to the company is to add another business that is related to their business like onay and storage of fish. If they will follow this recommendation, it will not be hard for them because they already have the materials, equipment and supplies they needed. It is present already and it will be lesser in expenses in buying new equipments.
