In a brief moment when nobody’slooking, usually in a matter of mereminutes, the walls of houses aresprayed with graffiti. People haveacknowledged for a long time that, more often than not, such graffiti is anexciting work of art, a powerfulexpression of the zeitgeist and themood of an entire generation – morethan mere smears of paint. In theClowns collection, Jan Kath has nowbrought the designs of an unknowngraffiti artist from New York City ontocarpets, raising the curtain on a newstage for street art. “I find inspirationfor my carpets whenever I’m travellingaround the world,” Kath explains.“I’m equally interested in century-oldtradition and the underground culturesof today. And I try to bring thesetogether. I’m fascinated by the powerand determination of graffiti artists.By transforming their creations intointricate craftwork, I can makepeople see their art in a new light.”

Fashion Institute of Technology studentCharlotte Rodiere won the 2nd Prizein Warp & Weft’s FIT Student RugDesign Competition 2011. Rodiere’sinspiration came from the aestheticeffects of a kaleidoscope and resultedin a bold pattern made of angularshapes and strong colours juxtaposedwith a neutral ground. The design hasbeen made to show in Milan and atNew York’s ICFF show in May 2012.

The idea of Reload,by SoFar/SoNear,was to reproduce theoriginal architectureof a classic Persiancarpet, applyingsymbols from adifferent culturalbackground. First thestructure and thesymbols of a Persiancarpet wereinterpreted using amanual gesture andthen an iconicoriental pattern wasreplaced by aEuropean one. Thefinal design isreminiscent of thefascinatinggeometries of theMashrabiya, thetraditional orielwindows enclosedby carved wood.Reload can beassimilated to classicdesigns, but clearlyfeatures a morecontemporarypattern.

Baneh Kilims are woven into 40–50cm wide ribbons and finally stitchedtogether. Particular emphasis is placedon the elaboration of the weaveendings. The endings show a veryfinely woven ornament which is alsopartly woven into the kilim. The wooloriginates from the Iranian province ofKurdistan, and is handspun andhandplied. Exclusively naturalvegetable colours are used for dyeing.

The Update rugs from the IsfahanCollection, designed by SoFar/SoNear, Milan, revive the way inwhich classic designs are revised andinterpreted. In this case, the stylisticvalues and the symbols remain true tothe original but by disassembling theimage into ‘dots’ the viewer is unableto immediately identify the originalpicture. In both designs the originalimage is visible but it is the structurethat changes according to thedistance the carpet is looked at.
