The observation below took place during a 30 minutes time frame. Though the shots

throughout the entire show lasted longer than the observed, we will therefore assume that for

the purpose of demonstrating an example of note taking strategies for assignment one.

Description of the Location: “The Legend of the Seeker” comprises - three different locations.

These three main locations are; the Westland’s, the Midlands and the D'Hara. Westland is

separated from the Midlands by a magical boundary, which was created to prevent any form of

magic from entering it. Hartland and Brennidon are two cities that make up the Westland. They

are located on the mountains across the Midlands. These cities were very peaceful under the

leadership of “The councilor “until the breaking down of the magical boundary that separates

both lands.

On the other side of the Midlands is D'Hara, which is ruled by Darken Rahl and his army.

D’Hara is a large province with ancient castles and temples built for the D’Haran armies.

The castles had dungeons built in it for keeping captives and people who disobeyed Darken

Rahl’s orders. This land was never a place of peace as compared to the Westland’s. There was

always dictatorship rule. It is located on the eastside of the Westland’s with a huge forest

separating both.

Lastly, the Midland’s is located between the Westland’s and the D’Hara. This land was a

place where confessors (an ancient order of women, who oversee the welfare of the people of the

Midlands and the Seeker) lived.

Figured World: This refers to particular communities who share a common way of

expressing appropriate behaviors through their communications, actions, languages and

deeds.

The rules and conventions for appropriate behavior observed in this particular figured world are

based on the different locations earlier discussed.

Killing: In the D’Haran it was very appropriate to kill anyone no matter how related you are. If

one breaches the trust gap, he or she must die. Anyone with the intention of supporting the

prophecy was made to suffer or die. Killing was therefore considered inappropriate in the

Westland and the Midlands. When a seeker was named, Darken Rahl was amazed because he

thought he had averted that prophecy several years ago after ordering his most trusted army

commander to kill every first born child in Brennidon. After failing to accomplish the task as

ordered, Lord Rahl killed him. After many years of loyalty to Lord Rahl he was killed just for a

mistake.

Confession: This is a special magic used by only confessors to put someone under their control.

They do this when they are in danger especially to opponents. Anytime someone is confessed,

they get weaker and feel unconscious. It takes much of their energy doing this, so they hardly use

it. Among themselves it was a good defense mechanism except that they found it misappropriate

when they fall in love with any man. They will put that person under their control forever. Also

the D’Harans was not in favor of such actions because they felt it gave them too much power

over them. They wanted this group of confessor’s dead just to end that act. Inhabitants of the

Midlands thought this was an appropriate act, because it has been used to save their land from

enemies.

Sorcery: This practice was appropriate among the three locations earlier listed. Everyone wanted

to use charms, magic and sorcery to gain power over each other. It was appropriate for wizards

and witches to use any form of sorcery or magic to protect themselves from trouble. They were

also free to cast spells on each other to show some kind of superiority in their powers.

Chaos: This was an appropriate behavior among the provinces of the D’Harans. It was expected

to happen at any point in time without no regrets or worries. Loud sounds generated from this

chaos were also appropriate forms of behavior. The Westland’s considered these activities

misappropriate. The least they ever expect were chaos and its loud sounds.

Anger: This particular behavior wasn’t acceptable among the seeker, the confessor and the

wizard. They believed anger will destroy their quest in ‘search for the truth’, because it can

cause them to depart, bring enmity, and rage among themselves. For instance when a confessor

gets angry she is capable of confessing anyone. When the seeker gets angry, with the sword of

truth is in the hands he can cause chaos. The wizard can misuse his magic when he is in an angry

mood. Likewise Darken Rahl, when he is angry he makes some unreasonable decisions. Neither

his commanders nor subordinates want him in that mood.

Actors: These are groups of people within a particular figured world who engage in actions with

the help of artifacts to change situations they find themselves. Below are the major actors

observed in this figured world, even though there are several others? I therefore decided to

elaborate more specifically on their roles that impacted the observed figured world.

Richard Cypher: “The seeker of truth”, this was a role that had a great impact on the figured

world under observation. The destiny lied in the hands of Richard to fulfill the prophecy of

killing Darken Rahl. This actor in the current role violates standards of appropriate behavior

sometimes. After he got named as the seeker, it was inappropriate for him to get angry no matter

what. But like humans despite our strengths, we also have weakness so does he. He usually

violates the norms of standard behavior. Richard was mostly seen getting angry. Anger made

him lost “the book of counted shadows” to Fame. It was this Richard that Darken Rahl was

looking to kill at his infant stage. That’s why he ordered his soldiers to kill every male born child

in Brennidon; just to stop the prophecy of him challenging his authority one day. A wizard of the

first order escaped with Richard that night of the incidence to Hartland, a neighboring town.

Richard grew up in Hartland with his foster parents because he was an orphan. During his middle

ages, he had begun to fulfill his destiny. Richard is a kind, and thoughtful man. He possesses

3

strong leadership, strategic thinking, and is always ready to help others. Richard doesn't believe in prophecies, even though they have come to pass. He shows great love for Kahlan, but knows he cannot be with her. He is a character that perfectly fits the role in this figured

world.

Kahlan Amnell: “The mother Confessor” and co-lead character of in this figured world, is a woman considered to be strong, smart, brave and also compassionate. Being a Confessor, she possesses a mysterious power. She befriends and aids Richard on their journey. She

was the only named confessor in the first episode. Her main focus is about protecting the seeker

in his quest and finding the truth. Prophecy demanded that she will have to go in search of a first

order wizard to help her name the seeker. After Richard was named she swore to protect him

with her life. Later her role proves worthy to the team because whenever she gets the chance, she

uses her magic which was an appropriate behavior to confessors but inappropriate to the

D’Harans to confess (using her power to put people under her control). This helps her to find

more information and temporarily add someone to her team. Despite her strengths, she exhibited

few weaknesses such as falling in love with Richard. This was totally against the norm but some

what she was brought back on course. Her role was indeed a difficult one but she managed to

succeed in fitting in it.

Zeddicus Z’ul Zorander: The only wizard of the first order alive. Zedd is extremely powerful. He can shoot Wizard's fire out of his hands and throw people off their feet. Zedd is a man with a big appetite and is usually eating something. He is also a bit prideful. Zedd is well liked by everyone - even Cara eventually warms up to him. After he names the seeker of

truth, he swears to protect him from any harm. Though he violates appropriate behavior

sometimes through anger and pride, yet he was always accurate in his predictions. Richard never

believed his words because he doesn’t act like a man of wisdom, rather he acts like an old “fool”

sometimes. He communicates with chickens which Richard deemed inappropriate. His role was

very significant in this figured world, because he helps the team with matters involving magic

and sorcery. He never hastes in decisions, always considering the consequences of his actions.

He never fails to consider what has to be done. In the later season he reveals to mother confessor

that he is a grandfather to Richard cypher.

Darken Rahl: Richards’s brother and the emperor of the D’Haran province. He is known in this

figured world as an adversary to the seeker of truth. He is a tyrannical leader with no room for

betrayal and mistake. He will kill anyone who impedes on his search for the seeker and the book

of counted shadows. He is a significant actor in this figured world. He normally breaks the code

of appropriate behavior with anyone questioning him. All his men fear him, because their fate

could not be decided as long as they served him. Darken Rahl always want to have a monopoly

over the entire world which seem inappropriate to leaders of the other provinces.

Michael Cypher: Richards’s stepbrother and first counselor of Hartland. Michael always looked

down Richard and never told him his origin because their dad George Cypher made him promise

not to disclose the secret to Richard. He was a courageous and good ruler who believed in

equality until the D’Harans broke the boundary. He showed weakness in his governance and

decisions during the later parts of the episode which were a violation to the legacy of the people

of Hartland.

Fame: One of Darken Rahl’s most trusted army commanders who happened to follow mother

confessor through the boundaries into the Westland. He was very dedicated warrior who will do

anything to make Lord Rahl happy.

Chase: Chief Commander of the Hartland army who oversees the affairs when it comes to

protecting the people. He is second in command to the counselor Michael Cypher. He violated

the rules of appropriate when he allied with Richard and Kahlan to defeat Lord Rahl.

Sebastian: A magic map maker who sells maps to earn a living in Brennidon. He makes maps to

help people track the seeker. With his wisdom in map making he contributes to the drama that

happened in the later episode.

Artifacts: these are words, objects, emotions or feelings that help actors engage in activities

associated with a particular figured world to bring about changes in situations.

Book of Counted Shadows: A magical book believed to contain secrets for “the seeker” to help

him pursue righteousness and truth. This book is a major artifact in the figured world am

observing. Only the seeker can read and understand its content. With these secrets he will be able

to defeat lord Rahl.

Sword Of truth: The sword of truth is another artifact that gives power to only the true seeker to

help him fight Lord Rahl and his army. This sword is assumed to contain supernatural powers

from earlier seekers that existed several years ago. When Zeddicus was ordaining Richard as the

seeker, he made this statement ‘This sword will be a piece of steel in the hands of anyone, but in

the seekers hands bestows the power to fight evil. Literally this means this artifact makes the

seeker different from others.

Confession: Is a kind of feeling limited to only confessors. In danger they put people under a

spell to help them fight.

Flashing lamp; this lamp is believed to possess the souls of other dead confessors. This lamp

flashes to help mother confessor communicate with ancient group of confessors for directions on

how to fulfill the prophecy.

Chanting: This is an emotional artifact used by wizards and witches to show magical power and

supremacy.

Magical Boundary; This is artifact that separates the Westland’s from the D’Hara. It served as a

blocking point from magic to entering the midlands.

Chadron: A mythological animal in the form of dragon which hunts prey at day, keep them in

caves and devours them at night.

Discourse community: These are groups of people with the same goal, or objectives and use

common mediums of communicating.

D’Harans: this is a particular discourse community found in the observed figured world. It

comprises Darken Rahl and his armies. They share a common aim; thus to find and kill the

seeker and avert the said prophecy. This group will do anything just to get the seeker. They

accept instructions from Darken Rahl. They follow the rules of Rahl.

Hartland; this a town found in the Westland with people engaging in their own occupation such

as farming. They share a goal to make sure peace exist there. They communicate through

gatherings, such as village squares and market places.

Confessors: An ancient order of women who oversee the welfare of the people of midlands and

the seeker. Their main aim is to enforce that Darken Rahl is killed to make the prophecy come to

pass. They cannot marry because they will put any man under a spell after having an affair. Later

he will die.

The Observation.

9:00 AM – Mother Confessor and her sister Denee are being pursued by the D’Haran soldiers

from the Midlands just to capture and kill them. Unfortunately for Denee she gets stubbed by an

arrow which leaves her dying. She falls off her horse and hands over the book of counted

shadows to Kahlan. Denee asks Kahlan to leave her behind to avoid being captured. Mother

confessor runs for her life, but she gets to the magical boundary. She cannot cross. Kahlan

succeeds in walking through the boundary with the help of her magical lamp. The D’Haran army

is amazed and follows her through the boundary into the Westland. She is now in the thick forest

of the Westland and continues to run for her life.

9:10AM-While in the forest Kahlan gets into a battle with the D’Harans that followed her

through the boundary. She confesses one of the soldiers to help her fight. During the fight

Richard comes to help Kahlan defeat the other soldiers. Richard asks Kahlan who she was but

there was no response from her.

9:15AM- Kahlan walks away through the forest to find Zeddicus Z’ul Zorander. She finally

finds him. She asks the wizard to help him find the seeker. Meanwhile Fame, the army

commander of the D’Harans went to the counselor who happens to be the ruler of Hartland and a

stepbrother of Richard Cypher to help him capture the confessor. While he was with the

counselor, Fame shows him a necklace he tore from Richard neck while engaging in battle with

him. Richard is being pursued by his brother’s army. They wanted to find him and ask him about

what happened in the forest.

9:20AM- Richard goes home to see his dad. After few conversations between them, they peeped

through the window; there were a group of armed men coming. George Cypher asked Richard to

go in search of an old man in the woods named Zed who will tell him everything he needs to

know all these years.

Richard goes in search of Zed; meanwhile Kahlan and Zed were debating on finding the long

awaited seeker. When Richard got there, Zed told Kahlan the seeker she was looking for was the

one here. Zed explained Richards’s destiny to him, but he was naïve about it. Zed told him that

he purposely saved Richards life when he was child just to fulfill the Prophecy. After Darken

Rahl realized that the seeker was going to be born in Brennidon, he ordered his army to kill

every first male born child there just to avert that prophecy. That night Zed took him, crossed the

boundary and gave him to George Cypher.

9:25AM- After discovering this, Richard run home to ask George Cypher about what he was

told. When he got there, Fame had set their house on fire with his dad trapped inside. Richard

managed to get in to save his dad. George told Richard everything before his last breath. He

decided to look for Fame and avenge his father’s death. Meanwhile Fame was also looking for

the confessor. When Richard got to Zed’s house, Mother confessor Kahlan asked Zed to name

(officially ordain) him as the “Seeker of Truth”. Due to his anger at that moment Zed told

Kahlan that Richard was not ready for the quest and had to learn a few lessons before the naming

could take place. Richard took the ‘Sword of Truth’ and the ‘Book of counted shadows and

went’ in pursuit of Fame.

9:30AM- Richard eventually found Fame and engaged him in a battle. Fame defeats Richard and

takes the book from him. He wanted to hand it over to Lord Rahl who will use its secrets to

control the world. Fame heads towards D’Hara while Kahlan and Zed set off to look for and help

Richard retrieve the book from Fame. Richard learns his first lesson “The seeker shall not take

hasten decisions” said Zed.

Now Zeddicus Z’ul Zorander, wizard of the first order names Richard as the Seeker of Truth

after performing some magical incantations. He says to Richard “this sword is just a piece of

steel in the hands of anybody, but in the seekers hands bestows the power to fight evil and with it

you will kill Darken Rahl”.

Observation Two

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Time: 9:35AM-10:15AM

This observation was conducted during a 45-minute period, even though the actual time seem

to be longer than that, we will therefore assume it just for the purpose of note taking.

Below is a continuation of the observation from the “Legend of the Seeker”. The location and

actors remain the same throughout these shots.

Page 7: FINAL DRAFT... ASSIGNMENT ONE

7

9:35 AM- After Richard had lost the book of counted shadows to Fame. He decided to take it

back, because if Darken Rahl gets it he could read the secrets then use it to rule every corner of

the world.

Richard, Kahlan and Zeddicus decided to take the fastest route which will help them capture

Fame before he crosses the boundary to the D’Hara. While in the woods contemplating, Chase

the chief commander of Hartland approached them to verify what Fame had told the counselor

earlier. Zed reveals the prophecy to Chase thereby allying himself to them so that the seeker ends

the tyranny of Darken Rahl.

Chase suggests they spend the night in his house so that his wife could prepare them a good meal

before they continue pursuing Fame.

9:40 AM- Darken Rahl summoned his commander to complain to him about his last night

dream. “After twenty-three years I have always slept in peace knowing that the prophecy had

been averted, only to have a nightmare last night showing that the seeker still lives”. Lord Rahl

gets disappointed in him. He pleads for another chance so that his men can cross the boundary

and kill Richard Cypher but Lord Rahl thanks him for his years of service and chops off his

hands. He bled to death and the blood was collected into a golden cup. Rahl uses blood as ink to

send orders from his castle to all his men just by writing the journey book.

9:45 AM - Lord Rahl sends orders from his journey book saying “I want all the powerful

wizards assembled and with their sorcery break down the boundary.” The reason was to gain

access to the seeker and kill him”. Chase led Richard, Kahlan and Zeddicus to his house. They

enjoyed the best spicy soup from Chase’s wife. Meanwhile Rahl’s wizards were trying their best

to break the boundary. Richard and Kahlan saw lightening’s in the sky. They wondered where it

came from. Hartland begun to experience deaths of their livestock because of the sorcery used to

break the boundary.

9:50AM- After eating, they set off to find Fame. On their way, they got to a bridge where

Michael Cypher had assembled his men to stop Richard and capture Kahlan because Fame had

brainwashed them. She was the cause of all troubles they were undergoing. She was also

responsible for the death of George Cypher and for putting Richard under a spell. Richard and

Zeddicus managed to scare them away with the help of Chase. Michael was furious for the

disloyalty of Chase, so he ordered his men to capture Chase’s family until Chase is dealt with.

Richard asks Chase to go back and make sure his family was safe when they got to some point.

He headed back home. When he gets home finds a group of armed men guarding his house. He

went inside and found Fame with a sword around her daughter’s neck ready to kill her.

Fame identified one of Chase’s weapons as belonging to the D’Harans when he asked him to

surrender. He persuaded Chase to kill his daughter if he did not disclose how and where he got

that weapon. Chase tells him he got it from an old woman. Fame heads to find the woman with

Chase’s daughter in his custody. He believes this woman knew secrets about getting to the other

side of the boundary.

9:55AM- Fames goes away with Chase’s daughter promising to return her alive only if he finds

that woman. He is accompanied by escorts from Michael Cypher. Chase gets captured and being

sent to the counselor. On their way he managed to fight and kill the men, steal their horse and

goes in search of Richard and his group.

After few minutes of riding, he meets Richard. He tells them where to find Fame. They rode as

fast as their horse could carry them just to track him down before he escapes to other side of the

boundary. Finally Fame got to this old woman threatening to kill Chase daughter if she didn’t tell

him how to get through the boundary. Without hesitating she gave him a black stone which

contained magic to help him cross the boundary.

Fame broke his promise and took the girl hostage with him. He wanted to hand him over to Lord

Rahl so she could become a servant. He sets off to the boundary.

10:00 AM- Richard, Kahlan and Zeddicus got to the boundary. They started hearing strange

voices calling Richard. It was the spirit of his dad and mom from the underworld. Richard rushed

to hug his dad; the spirits started pulling him into the boundary. Zed pushed Richard aside but

instead he got pulled rather. He uses charm to get out, but in the process he fainted. They needed

a healer to heal him suggested by Richard, but mother confessor told him if they wasted any

more time Fame will get away with the book. The confessor asked Richard to go with Chase to

find Fame and she will bring Zed behind them.

10:05 AM - Richard rode away with Chase. Eventually they got to the old woman’s place but

Fame had just left there. They continued to the boundary to get him. Meanwhile Kahlan was

coming with zeddicus still in his unconscious state. Finally she got the wizard to the old

woman’s abode. Kahlan left him under her care and continued her journey to help Richard and

Chase defeat Fame.

10:10 AM- Fame knew that Richard was pursuing him and wasn’t far away from them. Richard

and Chase got closer to Fame and his escorts. When Fame saw them coming, he freed the girl

and rode fast to the boundary. While running towards his dad, a dragon flew towards her at the

sound of her cry to devour her. Amazingly Richard with his sword of truth was able to cut off the

dragon’s head before it got to her. Chase was very grateful to Richard for saving his daughters

life. He asked Chase to go home and make sure the rest of the family was safe. Chase thanks

Richard and assures him to call on him if he needed help at any point in time. Kahlan meets

Richard and Chase. She says goodbye to them as they head back home.

10:15AM- At last Fame and his escorts are now at the boundary. He pointed the night stone to

the boundary and it begun creating a path through it. But just before they could escape, Richard

and Kahlan got there. Unfortunately for Fame he has to battle the seeker. Richard and Kahlan

successfully killed Fame and his escorts retrieved the book. After successfully retrieving the

book, Lord Rahl’s wizards and army had also succeeded in breaking down the boundary. They

rushed through. Immediately they identified the seeker and mother confessor standing right in

front of them with the book in the seeker’s hands. The commander asks Richard to hand over the

book peacefully so that he could give him a merciful death. Richard throws the book into fire and

burns it. They got furious and started attacking them. Confessor helps Richard, by confessing the

commander to fight on their behalf. He ends up killing majority of his men but finally they killed

him. Usually when Kahlan confesses someone, she gets weaker and falls to the ground until that

person is killed. One soldier walks to weak confessor and raises the sword to kill her but Richard

from nowhere comes to her rescue and kills them all.

Page 9: FINAL DRAFT... ASSIGNMENT ONE

9

Meanwhile Zeddicus had been healed by the old woman. He asks for the where about of Richard

and Kahlan. She directs him to the boundary. He gets there and sees that he had missed the

action, seeing soldiers lying on the floor dead. Kahlan tells Zed that Richard had burned the book

and how was he going to read the secrets it contained to defeat Lord Rahl. Zed told her the

seeker prevented the book from getting into the hands of Rahl and that was what the prophecy

said. One of the soldiers managed to escape from that bloody battle. He rushed to tell Lord Rahl

the tragedy that had befallen the entire army he sent. Lord Rahl sent messages throughout his

territories that he will reward anyone who brings him the seeker.

Observation Three

Tuesday February, 4 2014

Time; 10:20AM-10:50AM

Note: The actors, locations, discourse community, artifacts and rules of appropriate behavior

within this observed figured world still remains unchanged. Below is a continuation for my

observation.

10:20AM - Pictures of the seeker have been posted all over Lord Rahl’s territories with a price

tag. People are on the lookout for Richard. A man finds a pendant belonging to him. He takes it

to Sebastian a magic map maker to help him make a map which could track the seeker. He bribes

him with some pieces of gold. He agrees but requested something that belonged to him. He

hands him the pendant and a map was made which could the exact location of Richard. He goes

in search for the seeker. In the woods Richard, Kahlan and Zeddicus got trapped by a rope set by

the man. The men planned to capture them but Zeddicus was able to use his wizard’s fire to set

them free. Kahlan was able to grab one of the men’s bags as he rode on the horse pass her. When

she emptied the bag, she found a map that had a lighted point which moves whenever the seeker

moved towards them or away.

10:25 A.M. - They identified that the map was made to locate Richard. They went to Brennidon

hoping to find something to eat. While eating, they saw fingers being pointed at them and on one

of the walls was a picture of Richard labelled ‘wanted’ with a thousand pieces of gold as a

reward anyone who brings Lord Rahl the seeker. As the people struggle to capture Richard, Lily

walks from nowhere and comes to their rescue, helping the seeker, mother confessor and the

wizard to escape. Meanwhile Sebastian kept making more maps for people to track Richard. He

was making money from selling these maps. Lily fabricated to the seeker that a Chadron had

captured his younger brother and taken him into a cave to feed on him while they were in the

field.

10:30AM- Lily led Richard, Kahlan and Zed towards a nearby cave insisting her brother might

be in. As they approached the cave, they met another group of men who were hunting for

Richard. They fought them and found another similar map. They tortured him to tell them who

was behind the map making. He tells them where to locate Sebastian. Zed goes in search of

Sebastian to stop him from making more maps.

Lily traps mother confessor in the cave and hits Richard in the head making him unconscious.

She locks him in chains and places him in the back of a carriage heading him to the D’Haran

10

army in exchange for his younger brother. He was caught stealing food and was going to be

executed. Zed finds Sebastian and warns him not to make more maps otherwise he will be back

and kill him.

10:35 AM- Mother Confessor manages to find her way out of the cave but only to notice that

Richard was nowhere. She pulls her map to track Richard. Lily got to the D’Haran border and

asks the guard to tell his commander that she has the seeker but instead of the price she wants

something else. She therefore wants him to meet her and the seeker at demon rock. Kahlan

follows the maps direction just to rescue Richard from Lily. Finally she gets Lily off the carriage

and unshackles Richard. Mother confessor ties Lily in ropes for betraying them.

10:40AM- Kahlan warns Richard never to trust anyone and accepts an apology from Richard.

He unties Lily assuring her he will rescue his younger brother from the D’Haran soldiers.

Lily, Richard, Zed and Kahlan head to the D’Haran camp to rescue the poor boy. They trick the

soldiers and trapped them in a cave. Zed used magic to seal the cave. Richard and Kahlan

rescued Lily’s brother out of the prison and killed the rest of the soldiers.

10:45 AM- Finally Lily and his brother went back to Brennidon to announce to everyone that the

seeker was on their side and that the D’Haran army will not reward anyone who brings them the

seeker. Zeddicus Z’ul Zorander wizard of the first order performs his magic to destroy all the

maps that were made to track the seeker.

10:50 AM- Richard Cypher “The seeker of truth”, thanks Kahlan “mother confessor” for always

being there for him every time. They smile at each other as they sat by the fireside enjoying

some warmth in the woods.

INTERVIEW

Below are some interview questions that I conducted on individuals who have watched the series

“The Legend of the Seeker” and their responses.

Describe a scene of violence that you watched, and how has this scene affected your daily life?

Isaac: Even though there were several scenes of violence during the entire episode, this

particular one left me thinking. This was when Lord Rahl after knowing the prophecy that there

was going to be born, a seeker of truth whose destiny was to kill him. He ordered his most

trusted army to go into Brennidon that night and kill every male child just to avert the prophecy.

Without hesitation from them, they went that night into Brennidon and started killing every male

born child. In fact there was chaos and violence in that province where innocent lives were taken

just to stop a prophecy from coming to pass. No one had the power to say anything. Because a

tyrannical leader was in charge and he could possibly do or say anything without any opposition.

From my viewpoint, this scene affected my daily life in the following ways. I have learnt that

tyrannical rule is something that no one should expect. Dictating desires could possibly cause

pains to others. As much I like to be free from others so should everyone be in their daily

activities without having any voice.

Kevin: The scene of violence that affects my daily life is how Lord Rahl treats his men. He is a

dictator and so ambitious in his deeds. A point where he had to chop off the hand of his loyal

commander just for allowing the seeker slips through his fingers. Several years this man had

served him diligently and all he got as a reward was death. From this act, I think people deserve

to be recognized for good deeds instead of one mistake committed. We can bear to the fact that

this happens in our everyday life’s, on the news and communities. We tend to let the bad

outweigh the good which I found very biased.

How did the role of the “Seeker” in his quest impact the movie?

Isaac: The role of the seeker impacted this movie in several ways. In times of difficulty, he was

chosen by destiny to end the unrighteousness that existed. Though an ordinary young man who

likes being in the field as he is, the role to search for the truth was the part that made the movie

interesting. Richard acting courageously in his role to help people from the arbitrary rules of

Lord Rahl and his army created a great impact. Teaming up with mother confessor and Zeddicus

after being named started the whole interest to watch it.

Kevin: I will say the role of Richard was the main idea of the episode. That role needed someone

who was courageous, strong, and disciplined because it was not just an ordinary role. The whole

show depended on it.

Describe a specific characteristic that was unique to the Westland’s and the D’Harans.

Isaac: The provinces of the Westland’s enjoyed the rule of the counselor, because their opinions

were heard. Michael Cypher ruled his people in diligence causing no harm or whatsoever to any

of his people. They enjoyed peace all these years until Lord Rahl and his sorcerers decided to

break down the magical boundary. When livestock and people begun to die, from the magic of

the D’Hara he was worried.

On the other hand, peace was not a characteristic feature of the D’Hara. Under the leadership of

Lord Rahl, D’Harans were under cruel and autocratic rule. All they got was indiscriminate

killings, torture and slavery. Lord Rahl had no pity for anyone even his most trusted

commanders. Any sense of betrayal from him was counter mount to death. This characteristic

differentiated both lands.

Kevin: With the locations starting with the D’Hara, the landscape was on a low land with castles

and dungeons. It looked more or less like a mighty antique kingdom with high walls surrounding

each castle. But for the Westland’s it was situated on a mountainous area with vast lands making

half of the city and the rest small buildings.

How did this helped in their struggle for power?

Isaac: This helped, because there were two sides that were against each other. The D’Harans

was against the side of righteousness in all their endeavors. They will kill or harm anyone who

comes between the house of Rahl, tyranny and unrighteousness.

Meanwhile the Westland’s were on the side for truth and righteousness. Their struggle was to

help the seeker end the rule of Rahl and bring back the sanity and joy taken from them for all

these years. All they wanted was peace all over the midlands, and the Westland. This specific

characteristic helped them in their roles for the struggle of power.

Kevin: Because the D’Hara was made up of mighty towers and dungeons their struggle for

power was more advantageous over the Westland’s. They could capture more people and enslave

them after war. This encouraged them to dominate in their struggle for power. So after that

prophecy they thought of how awkward it may sound for a seeker from the west land to gain

dominion over them.
