nipissing University and Canadore College celebrate the opening of the

new Harris learning library. a vital hub of learning for students, faculty,

staff, partners and the regional community, the project is a testament to the

strength and value of the partnership between nipissing University and

Canadore College. the library project was driven by our desire to provide

students with greater access to the world of knowledge and understanding.

the project grew with the support of our provincial and Federal

governments, expanded with help from regional libraries and became a

reality thanks to the investments of our individual and corporate partners.

the Harris learning library is more

than a building. it’s a learning centre

that supports both individual and

collaborative work using online and

onsite resources. Special learning

technologies provide support for

students who have learning challenges;

computers, laptops, ipads and printers are available in this fully wireless

environment. Dedicated space such as the treaty learning Centre and the

archives support specialized research, and students from both the College

and the University can have the support of staff as they prepare for class and

access the information they need to write assignments and reports.

the stunning building is a focal point for our campus. the workspaces

are a gathering point for students, faculty and staff. Besides the electronic

and hard copy collections, the library includes meeting rooms and some

classrooms equipped with the technology to access online learning as well

as participate in virtual meetings through audio- and video-conferencing.

the meeting rooms also support and encourage creative engagement,

scholarly discourse and the social dynamics of collaborative learning.

nipissing University and Canadore College take great pride in the fact that

the Harris learning library has become a reality. this facility represents our

commitment to providing the greatest learning opportunities possible for all

of our students.

Welcome to the Harris learning library. it was a great honour for us to

Co-chair the learning library campaign as it gave us the opportunity to work

with a group of dedicated citizens to make the vision of the library come to

life. the library is a transformative building that has changed the face of the

Canadore and nipissing campus

and has evolved the traditional

library into one that is radically

flexible, with a focus on online

resources, computer technology,

smart boards, collaborative

workspace and comfortable

reading space.

We are extremely proud that the community and our government recognized

the significant benefits of this project, thereby ensuring that Canadore College,

nipissing University and our region have the resources that will allow us to

compete in a global economy as we develop our future leaders.

- Charles Gagnon and David Liddle

“We know the value of a good investment, which is why we are proud to support this project. The Learning Library will have a massive impact on our community and will provide North Bay with a connection to the best the world has to offer.”

the minister of training, Colleges and Universities, John milloy, and

the minister of Revenue, monique Smith, announced that the ontario

government will invest $18 million in a new student learning library at

nipissing University and Canadore College.

“our government knows that it is today’s students who will build ontario’s

future economy, and that economy will be increasingly knowledge-based,”

said milloy. “our investment in this modern resource centre is ensuring that

students from the north Bay area are prepared for success in the future while

we create new jobs today.”

The Honourable James K. Bartleman

Former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

“The PALS project will create a virtual super library that will greatly benefit North Bay and the surrounding communities. Access to literacy is crucial and I am pleased to support the launch of the PALS resource sharing initiative.”

Canadore and nipissing launched the public and academic libraries

Sharing (palS) initiative with the support of the Honorable James K.

Bartleman. the palS partnership, which received an award from the ontario

library service for its positive impact on northern ontario communities,

allows for collection and services sharing between participating Blue Sky

Region libraries and the Harris learning library. the Harris learning library

also partners with public libraries in the communities where Canadore

College and nipissing University have regional campuses: parry Sound,

Bracebridge and Brantford.

the palS partnership maximizes benefits to our communities and students in

a very tangible way by establishing a “super library” that provides superior

access to literacy, research assistance,

and resources. Fostering life-long

learning and investing in libraries helps

Canadore and nipissing to serve as an

intellectual incubator that strengthens our

region’s place in society.

“I spend a lot of time at the library and I really appreciate the extended quiet study areas. The staff are so knowledgeable and always helpful. The private group rooms have been working out fabulously. The design of the library is modern and has become, for me, a great place to study and relax.”

the learning library campaign spread its wings and launched the official

public campaign for the library amid a packed theatre of students, faculty

and staff, and community members.

the ceremony built on the provincial

government’s investment announcement

and provided an opportunity to

acknowledge the generous commitment of

individuals and groups to the campaign. the

announcement of the fundraising campaign

toward the $25 million facility was an important step

towards improving the community’s ability to attract

knowledge assets, produce highly-skilled employees, and

increase the region’s connectivity and infrastructure. nipissing University

and Canadore College have an incredible social, cultural, and economic

impact on the region and the Harris learning library will function to

further position our institutions, and the entire region, as true leaders in

the first major public event following the launch, the

live on the Red Carpet gala took place at the Capitol

Centre with all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

the black-tie event, hosted by the alumni associations

of Canadore College and nipissing University,

literally rolled out the red carpet as guests were

greeted by media, posed for cameras, and were

entertained by live music by amy Sky and marc

Jordan; comedy by Royal Canadian air Farce’s

Craig lauzon; and a Broadway musical scene from

Chicago by Rep 21 Contemporary theatre. to top the evening off,

guests were treated to exclusive after parties at Cecil’s Bar and eatery,

100 georges and inn on the Bay.

the live on the Red Carpet gala was a creative occasion designed to

engage and connect with the community while raising awareness of

Canadore College and nipissing University’s fundraising objectives.

the event raised $15,000 toward the learning library campaign.

“The Live on the Red Carpet Gala was a huge success that created a unique vibe in the core of the City. The opportunity to engage the community in support of our educational institutions in a dynamic way was a major goal of the gala, which was achieved with all the ritz expected of a red carpet event.”

Candore College and nipissing University celebrated the groundbreaking

of the new learning library as college and university officials gathered with

other dignitaries at the future learning library location. the groundbreaking

ceremony was truly a momentous occasion given some of the uncertainties of

the economic downturn faced by the campaign after the initial launch.

the previous library, established in 1972, was organized in the traditional

fashion with many stacks and individual carrels meant for quiet study. it could

accommodate the student population at the time with 25,000 square feet.

today, the 56,000 square foot, three-storey facility designed by renowned

architects Diamond + Schmitt and evans Bertrand

Hill Wheeler more than doubles the size of the

previous library and includes informal reading areas,

a reading room, collaborative workspaces with

adaptive technology, a wireless computer lab, climate

controlled archives, instruction rooms, and many

individual study spaces accommodating the 7,000

plus students, faculty and staff that will be using the

Harris learning library.

“The Harris Learning Library has been an overwhelming success with our students and faculty. Demand for library study and research space is at an all-time high as students find the types of spaces best suited to their individual or group needs. Our reference and information staff are stretched to the limit with more detailed research appointments and more in-depth information literacy classes, as students explore the wide range of collections available to them.”

Former Premier of Ontario

nipissing University and Canadore College announced a $1.5 million gift

from prominent education philanthropist Seymour Schulich. the generous

donation brought the learning library campaign to its goal, allowing us to

start construction in august, 2009.

mr. Schulich was provided an opportunity

to name the learning library as part of

the recognition included with his gift. in

acknowledgment and respect of his friend and

alumnus of the north Bay teachers’ College,

former premier michael Harris, the library was

named the Harris learning library.

the Harris learning library improves the educational facilities in

northern ontario and encourages more individuals to obtain a post-secondary

education by providing state-of-the-art technology and connectivity to the world

of digital resources fostering knowledge, discourse and life-long learning

opportunities. the opportunity for collaborative learning will improve our ability

to attract students and faculty and knowledge assets. it will also ensure that our

region builds and retains a strong, vibrant and well-educated workforce.

“This is a great honour for me and my family. Nipissing University and Canadore College enjoy a relationship that is truly unique in the post-secondary sector; I very much believe in these institutions and their ability to attract and graduate future leaders. To be recognized in this fashion, and for my family to join me today, is a truly humbling experience.”

the Harris learning library is open and ready to connect to a world of learning and opportunities. there were lights, cameras, and action as the doors to the library officially opened welcoming the donors, friends and partners who contributed to the successful campaign.

June 25 marked an exciting milestone for Canadore College and nipissing University students, faculty and the broader community. the region will benefit greatly from the resource, which provides an outstanding environment for learning and collaboration. in addition to the many group and independent study areas, a suite of rooms dedicated to the understanding of Canada’s treaties with aboriginal peoples has been included. the learning centre is designed for study and discourse on the vast history and experiences of First nations in Canada.

investment in the Harris learning library came from a variety of sources. nipissing and Canadore raised $7 million from individual donors and corporations in a successful fundraising campaign, including a contribution of $1.5 million from the Seymour Schulich Foundation. the ministry of training Colleges and Universities contributed $18 million, northern ontario Heritage Fund contributed $1 million and Fednor contributed $500,000 to the project. to recognize and thank donors, Canadore and nipissing have built a unique and eye-catching donor tree that features prominently in the atrium.

“The Harris Learning Library is a place where anyone, be it students, alumni, faculty, staff, or community members, can come and find the path towards their goals. The library is easily the most stunning building on campus. The first time I entered, I did not want to leave. This new library means that I have a one stop location where I can surf the net, work on a project with my peers, get help on an assignment, or just come by and hang out with my friends.”

Your generous support has helped enhance the environment where students come to study, learn,

grow, and collaborate. Your generosity has turned our vision of a state-of-the-art new learning facility

into a reality, and we appreciate your commitment. Your support of this project will ensure that our

students, city and region have a resource that will allow us to compete in the global economy.
