CD: ERIC THE VIKING (1989) Sonet SNTCD 1023 (Tk 3 – Part 2) Notes: A straight dub of the dialogue in the cave scene where Eric comes to get advice from the seer Freya. The music is foreboding. The narrator says – “This is the age of Ragnarok, where Fenrir the Wolf has swallowed the sun, the gods are asleep, and men are destined to fight each other until the world is destroyed. Eric asks Freya what he can do. She tells him –

“Far out in the midst of the western ocean is a land, men call it, Hy-Brasil. There you will find the horn. This horn is called The Sanden. You must take the Horn of Sanden and three times you must blow on it. The first note will take you to Asgaard. The second note will awaken the gods and the third note will bring you home.” The movie still shows Eartha Kitt and Tim Robbins in the cave, probably a studio set.

Early in his carrier Neil Innes was a member of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (see under Rock Music – Alley Oop 1966-2005) and he had worked with John Altman on the music for the famous BBC Television series, Monty Python.

She convinces him to enter Hell and retrieve her magic charm…

Circe & Hercules wait to cross Styx Hercules in Hydra Cavern Battle with the mechanical robot Hydra

“To get to Circe's magic charm, Hercules has to battle the three-headed guardian of Hell. That would be a giant mechanical hydra. He does so and they cross the lake Styx to Castle Greyskull. Inside our burly hero retrieves the talisman from behind a twofold magic barrier.” (Borntreger 2006) The cue, “In the Hydra Cavern,” begins with an ominous orchestral theme leading to strained chords that cry out then fade to bring in crashing repeated pounding phrases with trumpets howling in the background continuing intensely to the end. Date: Feb. 1994 Time: (Total – 5:48) 2:49 CD: MOLOM – A Legend of Mongolia Verve 529 034-2 (Tk 4 – Part 2) Notes: "Yonden, an eight-year-old boy who was abandoned by his father, has been living in the wilderness with a pack of wolves. He is adopted by Molom, a shaman, story-teller, and time-traveler. The two of them trek across the countryside and visit two cities.” (Brussat 2016) The cave scene starts with Molom taking Yonden into a cave at the base of the cliffs. Inside he makes a

campfire and the boy falls asleep. Molom calls the spirits to the campfire.and reads Yonden’s future on a sheep bone. He says the boy’s future is very bright – “You’re betrothed to bliss from the six original worlds. You have the lofty brow of a shaman, a life-giver. Cup your eager hands. You’ll taste everything.” Preceded by a guitar cue, "Breakfast," this cue is very different, combining synthesizer and unusual percussion sounds – tocks, clacks, gongs, slaps, hollow-log tapping, clashes – it creates a weird underground atmosphere. John McLaughlin, the legendary guitarist – songwriter, should not to be confused with the pop songwriter, who has the same

name. Notes: Alberich, the dwarf king of the Nibelungen, guides Siegfried into the treasure cave where he is presented with a magic net which allows him to vanish. Siegfried is forced to kill Alberich and this causes the other dwarfs to turn into stone. The cave interior scenes (see still) were shot in the Postojna Cave, Slovenia, at that time in Yugoslavia. It was not possible to listen to this cue, “In Alberichs Höhle,” on the LP because there was no separation between bands and band 6 could not be discerned on the vinyl surface. This double CD contains several cues that were not included on the 1980 soundtrack LP album. The first cave cue, “Vor den Drachenhöhle” [Before the Dragon Cave], would have been used for the scene where Siegfried meets the dragon Fafnir in front of its cave, defeats it, and becomes invulnerable by bathing in the beast's blood. And the second cave cue, “Siegfried in der Höhle” [Siegfried in the Cave], is coupled with “Kampf mit Alberich und den Alben” [Fight with Alberich and the Alben], which, given about the same running time, seems to indicate that this is the same cue as that titled, “In Alberichs Höhle,” on the LP. Neither of these cues have been heard. THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD –

THE CAVE Film Music – Orchestral – Instrumental

Comp: Bernard HERRMANN Scr. (Film): Kenneth Kolb (From story by Ray Harryhausen)

Cond: John DEBNEY Dir. (Film): Nathan Juran, 1958 Prod. Co. (Film): Morningside Productions Prod. (Disc): Robert Townson Prod. Co: Varèse Sarabande Records Inc.; Studio City, CA Rec. Loc: City Halls; Glasgow Rec. Date: May 5-7, 1998 Liner Notes: Christopher Husted Time: 1:14 A. American CD: THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD Varèse Sarabande VSD-5961 (Tk 19) B. HERRMANN B. German CD: THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD Colosseum VSD-5961 (Tk 19) Notes: There were several cave scenes in this movie. “Sinbad and his men find the Cyclopes' treasure cave, but are then captured by one the creatures… With Parisa's aid, Sinbad manages to escape, then blinds the one-eyed creature, and lures it off the edge of a cliff to its death…. ” Later “Sinbad awakes and rubs the magic lamp, summoning Barani, who takes Sinbad to Sokurah's fortress. Barani helps him evade the chained dragon that stands guard. Sinbad reaches Sokurah, who restores the princess to normal. When Sinbad refuses to hand over the lamp, the magician animates a skeleton warrior, which Sinbad battles and destroys. With the help of the genie, Sinbad and Parisa make their way out of the cave, stopping to honor their promise to destroy the lamp, setting Barani free.” (Anon. 2016) Some of the cave interiors were filmed in the Cuevas de Arta on the Isle of Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. However, several cave scenes were also filmed on a studio set, either life size or in miniature. Judging by the order in which the cues appear on this CD, “The Cave” cue might have been for the scene when Sinbad first finds the Cyclopes’ treasure cave and gets himself captured. Or it might have been used for the dragon scene where Barani, the genie, comes to help.

Regarding Herrmann's score, Husted writes – "Because his style relies not on involved contrapuntal and harmonic textures, but rather on a highly repetitive employment of simple triads and motive figures, he is able to concentrate the listener's attention on timbre instead. The result is music that has a much less intellectual appeal – there is a primalness (sic) about it, a visceralness (sic) – addressing the listener directly and powerfully." (Liner notes) This cue has a bussing bassoon background with a short repeated orchestral phrase. Then the same phrase is taken up by the string section and repeated until the end. Prior to this CD, the music from this film, conducted by Bernard Herrmann, had been recorded in 1958 by the British Studio Orchestra and released on LP in many forms originally on the Colpix (1959) label, then reissued by the United Artists (1975), Request (bootleg – 1970), and Varèse Sarabande (1980) labels.

On these LPs several cues are for cave scenes, such as, "The Dragon," "The Skeleton," "The Duel with the Skeleton," "The Death of the Dragon," etc., but these cues do not have cave titles nor do they refer specifically to the caves. This was the first time this particular cue, "The Cave," was recorded for release. Reissue on CD: ULYSSES (1992) (CP-IM) Legend CD 8 (Tk 17) Notes: Hades (or the Greek Underworld of the dead) was always described as being in a cave and there are several caves that are traditionally held to provide the entrance to Hades. Two are located in Greece and two in Italy, but there are others in Turkey and elsewhere. (Brison 2005) (See also World Music – Greece – Rebetiko – Five Greeks in Hades) In the original epic tale, Odysseus (Latin name – Ulysses) goes to the entrance of Hades and digs a trench where he makes sacrifices to be able to speak with the spirits of the dead who come out to meet him. The orchestra slowly develops a slow, dismal theme then carries us into a long section of gloomy choral voices and finishes with a short brass fanfare. Several other cues included on this album were heard during scenes that take place in caves, but the titles do not mention caves. As for Tk 5 – Polyphemus; Tk 6 – Ulysses and his companions into the trap; Tk 7 – Polyphemus and the wine; and Tk 8 – The blinding of Polyphemus and escape from the island – all these tracks cover scenes that take place in the Cyclops’ cave. This long sequence in the Cyclops Cave is

remarkably well done, remaining faithful to the original epic tale except for the wine making scenes (Odysseus gave Polyphemus wine that they brought with them). Running through several of these cues there is a somber, threatening mood and a definite feeling for the cave surroundings.

Polyphemus (Oscar Andriani) His hand grabs a soldier Ulysses offers wineskin

Men turned to pigs Pigs turned back to men Cave set with Circe (Silvana Magnano) & Ulysses (Kirk Douglas)

Later, for the economy of the film script, the personages of Circe and Calypso are combined into one character (& played by the same actress). The two other tracks which cover that period: Tk 13 – Circe and Tk 14 – Ulysses and Circe: The idleness of Ulysses – both capture some of the mysterious and sinister aspects of the sorceress, Circe, and also the strangely-lit atmosphere of her stalactite cave. The elaborate studio cave formations in these scenes (stalactites & columns) are extensive and quite convincing. Circe had turned the first visitors from Ulysses’ crew into pigs and when Ulysses learned of it he forced her to turn them back into men. In the movie all of these scenes take place in the cave sets.
