Fieldbus systemBy using fieldbus technology it allows you to configure and control easily, safely and quickly decentralized islands. Installation costs are low when you control the number of solenoid valves with only a 2-wire transmission cable.

Many have discovered the benefits of control valves and take in the sensor signals through se-rial communication (fieldbus). The technology is

becoming, more or less standard in factory automation with benefits such as:

■ Reduced wiring■ Quick and easy installation■ Simplified error finding■ Easy to extend application■ Simplified drawings■ Diagnostic features

user value will appear in a more efficient production, improved quality and overall a more flexible and cost ef-fective application.

What is fieldbus really?In a conventional system the handling of signals to the PLC are done through adjacent I/O cards. This means that the signals must be connected individually in parallel between the PLC and field modules, which in turn leads to huge cables that are difficult to manage and therefore makes troubleshooting more difficult.

Fieldbus technology is a way to transmit analogue and digital signals in a serial way between one control system (PLC, PC) to different field units, (sensors, valves etc). Most systems communicate with a 2-wire cable (shielded, twisted pair), but solutions with fiberoptics are also present, for example in environments with a lot of electrical noice.

Which protocol should I choose?In the late 1980’s there were hundreds of different field-bus languages (protocols) who unfortunately could not communicate with each other.

Thankfully, the market has been consolidated to todays’ 20 some protocols that are trending, and are supported by the major automation suppliers. Some of these are focused on real estate automation, or are spe-cific fieldbuses for environments with EX–requirements etc.

For traditional factory automation, there is about 10 protocols, from which the most common are: PROFI-BuS DP, Devicenet, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT and AS–I. Between these there are differences in speed on the bus, configuration, network structure, etc.

5. Choose the right valve plate for mounting between serial interface unit and the valve manifold you use. (Example: EX600-ZMV1 for a VQC-manifold.) Valve manifolds can be found in chapter 4.

6. Choose a DIn rail mounting if you need one, or any enhancement parts ifmore than six EX600 modules are included in the manifold.

7. If desired, choose a hand–held terminal for setting and monitoring. (It is not necessary but easier for troubleshooting and test drive.)

8. Select fieldbus cabling to suit the protocol you se-lected. See end of this chapter.

Putting together an EX600–manifold is easy:

1. Determine which protocol to use and select the cor-rect serial interface unit. (Example: EX600-SDN1A for DeviceNet.)

2. Decide if you want digital and/or analog input mod-ules or output modules (maximum nine). (Example: If you want to connect eight sensors with M8 connec-tors, choose EX600-DXPC.)

3. Select end plate with power supply. Note! if the manifold consumption exceeds 2 A, you must select EX600–ED3.

4. Select power supply cable connector that fits the end plate you have chosen: M12 connection or 7/8".

SMC’s EX250 series is designed to connect the valve series VQC, SV and SY (see chapter 4) and input mod-ules for different fieldbus protocols.

All input and output signals are combined in a com-pact manifold that conforms to IP67. up to 32 input channels and 32 outputs can be connected in a single manifold.

All connections (air, power supplies, fieldbus and sensor) are located on the same side of the manifold which allows mounting in tight spaces.

All status indicators clearly visualized by LEDs on the front of the manifold.
