INFORMATION BROCHURE

Jadavpur University

In 1906 National Council of Education (NCE) was formed by the great thinkers of the t ime to impart l i terary, scientific, technical and professional education. In 1955 NCE consti tuted i tself as Jadavpur University. Since i ts establishment, Jadavpur University has set i tself apart by developing transdisciplinary pattern of educational and research programmes Jadavpur University now stands on an area of about 60 acres in the southern part of the Kolkata Metropolis. I t also has an s second campus covering about 20 acres of land in Salt Lake in the eastern side of Kolkata.

The University has 3 facult ies – Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts. In addit ion a number of Schools and Centres have been set up to init iate interdisciplinary post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral level research programmes in emerging areas. Presently there are 34 departments, 44 interdisciplinary Schools /Centres for Advance Studies and Research. There are also some affi l iated colleges. I t has the largest under graduate engineering/technology student intake in all disciplines in India. I t also takes up various other activit ies on a regular basis l ike Technology Development, Consultancy, Manpower Training, EDP and Extension work.

The University has been granted highest (5 star) ranking by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council . I t was designated by University Grants Commission, Govt. of India, as one of the 5 National Centres with Potential for Excellence. I t was also declared a Centre for Excellence in Science and Technology by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.

School Of Education Technology

The School of Education Technology (SET) was established by Jadavpur University in 1988 primarily to experiment with technologies that could be used to create a better teaching-learning environment. In 1996 as a recognition to i ts activit ies, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and All India Council for Technical Education, Govt. of India selected the SET as one of the seven nodal centres for nationally co-ordinated project on Education Technology. In 1998, Department of Electronics, now Ministry of Communication & Information Technology (MCIT), Govt. of India established the Multimedia Training & Development Resource Centre at SET. In 2003 MCIT provided funds to SET to set

13

Page 14: FET PG Admission

up Multi-modal Digital Distance Education project . SET also wishes to develop course materials for the Under Graduate Engineering students in some cri t ical areas to supplement the conventional classroom teaching. Linkages with various Universit ies and Insti tutions of the U.K. l ike Micro Electronic Educational Development Centre, Scotland, U.K. (1986), Open University, U.K. (1987), University of Manchester, U.K. (1995),Leeds Metropoli tan University, U.K.(2000 ) and Brunel University,U.K.(2004).

Multi-modal Digital Distance Education

Objective

During the globalisation process for about a decade, there has been rapid technological innovations leading to many technological changes. To cope up with these changes, there is a need for continuing Education of Technologists. Conventional classroom teaching alone cannot meet the Human Resource requirements. Digital Distance Education (DDE) is considered the only solution for rapidly evolving subjects and explosive knowledge growth in the form of short and medium term and career-oriented courses.

Mode of Education

In the multimodal digital distance education programme, all the followingmodes of dissemination methods would be used

Print material CD-ROM based self-learning packages. Education through Web-based learning environment Live broadcast of some lead-lectures by eminent personali t ies through Video

conferencing and one-way video with two way audio for interaction. Real t ime chat facil i ty On-line quiz and assignments Laboratory and project work at work centers

The Computer Mediated learning paradigm may be uti l ised in the following forms :

Interactive Multimedia based Computer Based Instruction distributed in the form of CD-ROM.

Jadavpur University developed “Ekalabbya” or the l ike Just-In-Time presentation distributed in the form of CD-ROM.

Web-based learning and interaction through e-mail and l ive-chat. There will be some lead lectures by the Experts in the fields. In addit ion students would be required to perform laboratory work at the

work centres.Work centers and Distance Education Partners such centres will

provide the following facil i t ies / services : Access to computer for students pursuing Multimodal Digital Distance

Education programme by using CD-ROM, Web-education etc. Internet facil i ty Provide the services of mentors during the student’s stay at work-centre. Conduct lab experiments and project work Assist in continuous evaluation of student’s performance.

14

Page 15: FET PG Admission

The courses will be conducted at Jadavpur University. Besides this, the courses will also be conducted through some Distance Education Partners at their respective Work Centres mentioned below :-

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Kolkata CMC LTD, Kolkata

Examination

Examinations would be conducted in the conventional manner as is done in classroom method at Jadavpur University.

Student Categories

There will be two categories of student as follows:-

Category X Students : They would use the work centers for lab work (6 hrs per week), interaction work and CDROM/web browsing (14 hrs per week). In addit ion they would conduct thesis/dissertation/project work at the work centers.

Category Y Students : They would use the work centers for lab work (6 hrs per week) and l imited interaction work (4 hrs per week). In addit ion they would conduct thesis/dissertation/project work at the work centers. However for CDROM/ web browsing and other interaction work they may use their own home computers or any cyber café at their own expense .

For the first batch only Category X Students are eligible for admission.

Courses

Init ial ly two courses mentioned below will be started. 4 Semester “Post Graduate Diploma in Multimedia and Web Technology” in

Multimodal Digital Distance Education format. This is for the first t ime any University in India is offering the course in this mode.

6 Semester “M. Tech.IT (Courseware Engineering)” in Multimodal Digital Distance Education format. The course would be offered to intending Resource Persons to familiarise with methodology, tools & techniques of Digital Distance Education for Content Creation in their f ields of specialisation.

Shortly, another 6 Semester course t i t led “M.Tech.IT (Software Engineering)” in Multimodal Digital Distance Education format will also be started.
