Dt.25.03.2017. Musi Riverfront Development Corporation will act as a nodal agency for

preparation and execution of comprehensive plan for abatement of pollution of Musi River

and Riverfront Development.

With the evolving scenario of city’s expansion up to Outer Ring Road and beyond, there is

FESTIVALS AND CULTUREHyderabad is a veritable melting pot of cultures, ethnicity, religion and nothing makes

this more evident than the many festivals and celebrations that are being celebrated in

Hyderabad annually.

The millions of Hyderabadi’s usually greet each festivity with fervor regardless of ethnicity,

caste or religion. The festivals celebrated can have their roots in religion although there

are some that are decidedly modern, such as music festivals that are celebrated in order

to raise cultural awareness and creativity among the people.

These festivals are enjoyed not just by the Hyderabadi’s but by tourists as well, and are

often reminiscent of the major festivals around the world.

THE CITY OF HYDERABAD

From the times of Kakatiya dynasty and Nizams, Hyderabad has had a glorious history,

rich culture and amazing heritage. As the capital of a newly formed state, Hyderabad is

among one of the fast growing cities in India with an expanding population of 9.5 million.

Established around 400 years ago along the southern banks of the Musi, Hyderabad has

been influenced by various religious, historical and political, making it a dynamic and

culturally diverse metropolis with a rich history. Hyderabad toady is the most preferred

destination for new industries especially in IT sector, Pharmaceuticals & Aerospace

among others and tourism.

Musi River Revitalization is the most important project for the State in terms of its positive

impact and feel good factor apart from it being a connector in the broadest sense, with

shared open spaces, environmental resources, infrastructure and cultural landmarks for all

Hyderabadis !

Evolution of the City…

AGRICULTURE & IRRIGATION

During dry season Musi’s

fertile river bed was used

for agriculture and

acted as hub for

seasonal crop

production

TANKS AND CANALS

Water bodies were

constructed across the

city which drew water

from Musi. These water

bodies acted as water

storage reservoirs for

irrigation, drinking and

ground water recharge.

And were an inalienable

part of the urban

ecology of the city

IMPORTANT BUILDINGSThere are as many as 35

structures of heritage

relevance along the

riverfront between Purana

pul stretch to Chaderghat

bridge. These included

important buildings such as

museums and institutions.

TRADE

The Purana Pul (1578 AD)

bridge was the first

bridge built during Qutab

Shahi period. The bridge

since the 19th century has

been used as ground for

trading and currently

serves as space for

hawker’s market

RECREATIONAL PLACES

Musi river had planned

recreational places such

as gardens and orchards

along its edges in the

city, particularly near the

Purana Pul area

SEWAGE AND TRASH

The existing situation

along the edges is

summed up by

unplanned

development, pollution

from the untreated

sewage water coming

from the city incongruous

to its surroundings,

disturbed habitats,

depletion of ecological

resources, impermeable

river edges
