Feeding Our Ohana DECEMBER 2017 HAWAII FOODBANK NEWSLETTER The Hawaii Foodbank Rainy Day Fund was created by Gene and Jean Grippin in 2010 as an investment to the future of Hawaii Foodbank. Gene and his wife Jean, a retiree with 25 years of expe- rience as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse at Queen’s Medical Center, both had parents who demonstrated the virtue of helping the less fortunate. Although Gene did not become a pastor like his father, he inherited the will to help people through nonprofits like Hawaii Foodbank. The Grippins' charitable initiative has inspired others, including the Hawaii Foodank board members to chip in. Now you can invest in the Foodbank's future, too. On Friday, November 3, 2017, donors and volunteers were invited to attend the first Foodbank & Friends event hosted in their honor for their giving impact. The Foodbank & Friends guest speakers from First Hawai- ian Bank, were Johnnel Nakamura, J.D., vice president, trust tax manager and Jean P. Creadick, J.D., vice president, philanthropic services. Johnnel's presentation, "The Current Estate Tax Regime and Trump's Proposed Tax Plan" helped increase the understanding of the tax reform proposal and its implications for donors. Jean's presentation, "Charitable Remainder Trusts", included a case study to round out help- ful facts and generated a lively dialogue with the donors. The gathering also provided an opportunity to meet and thank some of our loyal and supportive donors. Starting with an update on current foodbank programs and a Q & A portion for the guests, the event concluded with a window tour of the warehouse. For some of the attendees, this was their first-time visit. Foodbank & Friends in January will have guest speaker Andy Pike of Quo Vadis Financial. Andy believes that re- lationships with people are more important than money, and with the right attitude, splendid things can happen. This upbeat perspective will surely lead to a dynamic and entertaining presentation. HAWAII FOODBANK NEWSLETTER

The Hawaii Foodbank Rainy Day Fund was created byGene and Jean Grippin in 2010 as an investment to thefuture of Hawaii Foodbank.

Gene Grippin, son of a pastor born during The Great

Depression—a time that many of us have only experienced through historical accounts—remembers people knocking at the back of the parsonage and his mother feeding hungry drifters (or hobos) in the 1930’s.

Hale Ho'omalu is one of two full family centers that aid40 - 60 clients a day. Their services include counseling, parent information resource center, community outreach, service coordination, enrichment classes, food pantry & clothes closet, job information services, volunteer training information, referral ohana caregiver support group and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program application.

Julie Kauakahi, program secretary of CFS, is a recoveringmeth addict who has been sober for four years. She is the perfect person for the job, as she can relate to the people that go to Hale Ho'omalu with problems of homelessness and drug addiction. Julie works hard to keep her life in order and to care for her three children and husband. It is very important for her to serve the community and prove there is hope for change and recovery for those who are struggling.

Julie works with Dory Farias, manager of Hale Ho'omalu, out of a little white house in Kapaa Town. Their team serves families and homeless individuals in need. Many of them do not qualify for public assistance, and experience issues with transportation, storage and theft.

welcome to our new food donor: gouvea's & purity foods

Gouvea’s started as a family owned and operated business, founded by Jacinto Gouvea in 1933. When the companytransitioned into previous generations of ownership, the Gouvea family approached long-time Waimanalo neighbor, Bill Atherton, now the vice president ofGouvea’s & Purity Foods, for a business consultation.Shortly afterward, Bill, a.k.a. wienie boy, purchased the company from the Gouveas.

Meanwhile, Scott Stevenson, the current president ofGouvea’s & Purity Foods grew up in the sausage business and knew that was all he wanted to do—eventually earning himself the title of sausage king. His first job was packing and stacking spices for Purity Foods. In the early 90’s,Scott’s grandfather went through rough times with his business. In 1997, Scott bought the company and worked alongside his grandfather for the next 10 years.

Together, Bill and Scott merged Gouvea Sausage and Purity Foods in 2008. By combining the two competing brands, they were able to provide higher quality products at lower cost. In January 2017, they brought in Eddie Asato as their chief operating officer. Eddie is no stranger to the food industry. Having been in the food business for over 40 years, he has held titles such as manager of

Payless Drugs, regional operations manager of the Food Grocery Outlet, vice president/general manager of 5-0 Marketing, senior trade development manager of Frito Lay and most recently, vice president/general manager of May’s Hawaii, a division of Palama Holdings.

We look forward to a continued partnership with Gouvea’s & Purity Foods and we sincerely appreciate their support and commitment in helping to feed Hawaii’s hungry.

It ’s important to Gouvea’s & Purity Foods that we give back and take care of our local customers. When you give to the Hawaii Foodbank, you are giving to someone in your ohana. We are all connected in one way or

another. There are many people I know that are a meal away from not being able to pay their rent, utilities or food for their family. What we are able to donate helps our community and people in need, especially the keiki.—Eddie Asato, chief operating officer of Gouvea’s

& Purity Foods

Helping to feed Hawaii's hungry.

Hunger isn’t something we can sweep under the rug. It’s a shame that in a country that celebrates excess in all things, we

have families wondering where their next meal is coming from. Despite our wealth, we have a huge portion of the population that lives on the edge. I sure wish we could solve this

problem by waving a magic wand and making it all go away.

But we can’t. And we won’t.

Which is why the work of the Hawaii Foodbank is so critical, and in more ways than one. Yes, it IS important to gather do-nations of food and cash. It’s what we do and we do it well. But we do other things, too.

The Hawaii Foodbank educates. Without Hawaii Foodbank, who would know the depth of the hunger problem in our state? It would be so easy to ignore. We wouldn’t have to think about the families affected by a teetering economy. We could turn a blind eye to seniors who see the diminishing buying power of their meager fixed incomes. We wouldn’t have to hear about children who collect recyclables so they can scrape up enough change to buy a musubi to fill their aching bellies. And the homeless would be as invisible as they have always been.

But because of the Hawaii Foodbank, we see them all.

The Foodbank organizes. I have never met a group of peoplewho get so much done with such modest resources. No one is getting rich by working for the Hawaii Foodbank. But these people are reaching into organizations, offices, neighborhoods and an entire state: organizing food drives; giving talks; enabling community supporters; distributing food; discovering new sources of food, funds and volunteer manpower; pulling off intricate (and super fun) fundraisers. These people really work it.

The Hawaii Foodbank inspires. It inspires us to do good. Itinspires us to help our brothers and sisters who need a hand. It generates energy and enthusiasm and a sincere desire to make a difference. It brings out the best in us as human beings. The Hawaii Foodbank inspires hope.

As we head into our Food Drive effort, I’d like to congratulate all of you for being part of this remarkable ohana of inspira-tional, effective and enlightened people.

The Hawaii Foodbank is working hard to make a you proud of being a part of us. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can fulfill our mission of feeding Hawaii’s hungry.
