Mission:To reduce the burden of unhealthy weight.

Established in 1986, EASO is a federation of professional membership associations from 34 European countries. It is the voice of the European obesity community, representing scientists, health care practitioners, physicians, public health experts, early career researchers, students and patients. EASO is in formal relations with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and is a founding member of the EU Platform on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.

The Objectives of EASO are:To establish obesity as an urgent and relevant health and wellbeing priority

To develop evolving evidence-based approaches for preventing and treating obesity across the lifespan To promote effective solutions through research, education and policy.

EASO has 34 member associations representing more than 5000 individual obesity specialists:

Speakers

Carlos OliveiraCaptain of the Merchant Navy, graduated in Port Management and Maritime Technologies, founding partner of Adexo - the Portuguese Association of Patients with Obesity in 2002, and President since 2004, has participated in all of the legislative changes around obesity treatment and prevention that have occurred in Portugal since that time. He is a patient living with obesity who has received management via a surgical process.

Carlos was on the team that produced the White Paper on Obesity for the European Commission and is a founding member of the European Patient Council and is on the board of ECPO – European Coalition for People Living with Obesity.

Volkan Demirhan YumukProfessor at Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes Division, Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, Turkey.

Professor Yumuk graduated from Hacettepe University Medical School in Ankara. In 1997 he completed the clinical endocrinology fellowship program at University of Alabama School of Medicine. Volkan Yumuk’s research area is obesity and his major clinical interest is prevention and management of obesity and type 2 diabetes. He is a founding member and current president of the Turkish Association for the Study of Obesity; is currently the Vice President responsible for the southern region of EASO. He has chaired the 18th European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul in 2011. He is a SCOPE (Specialist Certification of Obesity Professional Education) Fellow and an associate editor and a reviewer for Obesity Facts.

Abd TahraniAbd Tahrani is a Senior Lecturer in Metabolic Endocrinology and Obesity Medicine at the University of Birmingham (UoB); an Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist and lead for weight management and translational research at the Centre of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (CEDAM), Birmingham Health Partners. Abd has published over 150 peer reviewed articles and delivered more than 100 invited and keynote talks. He was awarded the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Sleep Disordered Breathing investigator of the year award in 2013. Abd is a trustee of the ASO (UK), a member of several NIHR panels, the British Sleep Society Research Committee and the strategic council of the Obesity All Party Parliamentary Committee in the UK. Abd is also and an Expert advisor to the Medical Technology Appraisal Committee of NICE and the co-Chair of the Clinical practice and Obesity Management Committee of ASO (UK). Abd is an associate editor for the European Journal of Endocrinology and the Diabetes Section Editor for BMC Endocrine Disorders.

António PalmeiraAntónio Palmeira is Associate Professor at the Universidade Lusófona and Research Associate at the University of Lisbon, António focuses his research on behavior change in weight management situations. With more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and over 30 invited or conference talks, António Palmeira is also the Executive Director of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, a leading institution in the study of weight management.Recently António Palmeira was the national coordinator of NoHoW, a Horizon 2020 funded project aiming to study digital behaviour change interventions in the context of weight regain prevention.

Sofus LarsenDr Larsen’s my research has been largely been focused on different aspects body weight regulation, obesity and related disorders. During the first 4 years of his research, his research focus on identifying lifestyle factors related to development or prevention of obesity in genetic subgroups of the population. This research was conducted during the course of the Gene-diet Interactions in Obesity (GENDINOB) project, where he began working as a PhD student and later as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and scientific coordinator. Since March 2015, Sofus has been employed as the Trial Manager for the Danish part of a large EU-funded intervention study, NoHoW (Navigating to a Healthy Weight), examining ICT based tools for weight loss maintenance.

Jake TuricchiJake is a final year PhD student at The University of Leeds working in the appetite and energy balance group. His interests are in body weight regulation and energy balance, with a particular interest in body weight variability. His PhD addresses the measurement and prevalence of body weight variability and its association with weight regulation and cardiometabolic health. Using novel data collected from wifi-connected smart scales by the NoHoW project has allowed for unique statistical methods to be applied to investigating weight variability allowing for greater resolution than previous research in the area.

Berit HeitmannProfessor Berit L. Heitmann is Research Director at the Parker Institute, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital and professor at the Section for General Practice, Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen. Professor Heitmann’s main areas of expertise include diet and the determinants and consequences of obesity.

Berit Heitmann was first appointed professor in 2001 at University of Southern Denmark; Since 2011 she is also Visiting Professor at Sydney University, and since 2016 also professor at Copenhagen University. Berit Heitmann has supervised 40 PhD students (5 in progress) and about 100 pre-graduates and has published about 330 scientific peer-reviewed papers.

Paula FreitasPaula Freitas, MD, PhD is an Endocrinologist in the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João, Porto. She is also an Assistant Professor at Faculty of Medicine University of Porto. A member of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (I3S), she is also Endocrinology Coordinator of the Surgical Center of High Differentiation for the Treatment of Obesity of Centro Hospitalar São João, Porto. Professor Freitas is also the Editor of the Portuguese Journal of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, the official journal of the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. She stands as Coordinator of the Lipodystrophy Group of The Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.

Dr Frietas is President of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Obesity, and was a ember of the Programme Organising Committee of the recent European Congress on Obesity, Porto, 2017

Falko SniehottaFalko Sniehotta is the Director of the NIHR Policy Research Unit Behavioural Science. He advises and provides evidence to the UK Government about health and social care policy in England.

He is also Professor of Behavioural Medicine at the University of Newcastle and leads a portfolio of research with a focus on obesity, population health and health behaviour. Falko is the behavioural science lead in the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT).

Falko is an honorary fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the European Health Psychology Society and a distinguished international affiliate of the American Psychological Association, division 38.

Cristiana DuarteDr Cristiana Duarte is a researcher at the Appetite Control and Energy Balance Research group at the School of Psychology, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Leeds, and an invited researcher at the Center for Research in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Behavioural Intervention, University of Coimbra. Dr Cristiana Duarte is a Psychologist with expertise in Clinical Psychology and statistical modelling of the psychological causes and consequences of uncontrolled eating behaviours. She is the Trial Manager for the NoHoW trial and has been investigating intervention mechanisms of evidence-based behaviour change approaches to weight management.

James StubbsJames Stubbs is Professor of Appetite and Energy Balance, School of Psychology, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Leeds.

Professor James Stubbs has 30 years research experience in appetite and energy balance including human behaviour, physiology and psychology of food intake, diet composition and obesity. He is currently PI of the NoHoW randomized trial. He has 10 years of industry experience and academic collaborations in developing applied solutions to weight control among in the general population, with a special interest in sustained weight loss, relapse prevention and weight maintenance strategies.

Dr Stubbs has extensive experience in research-intensive environments, conducting integrated human trials and interventions, concerned with diet composition, physical activity, energy balance, weight control and obesity. James has conducted over 70 studies, on human appetite, energy balance and obesity (h-index 52).

Margarida Lobo AntunesDr Margarida Lobo Antunes is a paediatrician and has been head of the Paediatric Obesity Consultation at Lusíadas Lisboa Hospital.

Chief Medical Officer since July 2019 She is an Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at the Medical School of the University of Lisbon and a Lecturer on the topic of “Child Obesity” pertaining to the curricular unit of the Masters Degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon.

She is also the project organiser of nutritional screening and healthy life style promotion events in schools and has participated in the project: “Food Evolution Manifesto Team”. In addition, Dr Margarida Lobo Antunes is co-author of the book: “À Descoberta do seu Bebé”, Editora Manuscrito, 2018.

Davide CarvalhoDavide Carvalho is Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Centro Hospitalar Universitário S. João, Porto, Portugal, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Core Researcher at I3s research group on Metabolism, Nutrition and Endocrinology. His research interests focus on obesity, lipodystrophies, diabetic complications and neuroendocrine modulation of pituitary tumours. Currently Professor Carvalho is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Neuroendocrine Association and President of the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism. He is also a member of the National Academy of Medicine. Professor Carvalho has authored more than 300 papers - 135 in indexed publications with impact factor - and is member of the Editorial Board of several journals, including “Neuroendocrinology.”
