EDITORIAL:

So another year upon us. A pleasant New Year away at Chiclana started off with lovely

weather and we were able to get out and do some prom walking with of course a compulsory

bar stop. Unfortunately weather changed after 2 days, got a bit wet and cooler. A number of

club members were staying at the same hotel so nice to get together at times and have a chat.

Please keep articles coming for future magazine editions, new contributors always welcome,

it gets more difficult to to fill the pages with interesting articles. Thanks to all those who con-

tributed during 2013. Terry Smith

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU

MORE VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED

Your club is run by volunteers, without them we cannot

function. Help is required for the following:

Bar staff, training will be given, see Mike Whittley, Bar Manager.

Help required by kitchen teams for preparation and serving to

members, Thursday mornings, no cooking. See Catering Manager

Brenda Taylor.

Meeters and greeters to man the front door for just an hour on a

Thursday club morning, see Maureen Baldwin-Winckle.

Scrooge at Christmas I am sorry to say that for the second year someone at the Club's Christmas Lunch stole or borrowed one of the Christmas candle holders. I hope that everyone agrees that the tables always look nice for this event and it's a shame that one (or more) person is spoiling it for the rest. If you have a guilty con-science please return them to the club, leave anywhere and someone will find them. Sue Potter

PRESIDENT’S LETTER - FEBRUARY 2014

The ‘Late New Year’s Party’ was a great success, so thanks to all of you who helped with the organisation both in the morning and during the evening. What a fantastic turn-out – 100 people enjoyed the American Supper and entertainment! In fact, during the evening, I was approached by several people who asked why we don’t do this type of evening more often! By now, most of you will have renewed your membership which I hope you will agree, is 30 Euros well spent. We are approaching the AGM on March 13th and if you have any issues, please submit your proposals. As you all know, the club is run by volunteers and help is always appreciated, so if you feel that you can help, please let me know. ‘Every little helps’! Doug

APPLICATION FOR AN EMERGENCY BUTTON Criteria – 80 plus and living alone I made my application through the Geriatric Clinic in Estepona, but I should think any Doctor’s surgery or medical office would be able to make the application. Age Concern might be able to help. The downside has been a five month wait for the emergency button to be delivered and the box attach-ment fitted to my telephone. There is a 24 hour service for any emergency with an English speaker. The Button is waterproof and is active within a 20 metre radius. It is free of charge. Submitted by Barbara Salisbury

Help with PDF Files in Windows 8

Members have reported problems when trying to print from PDF files in Windows 8. The problem arises because Win 8 has its own PDF reader – it does not by default

use Adobe reader. The Windows 8 method of printing a PDF is at best messy! A

simple method to print a PDF which is displayed on screen is to press Ctrl+P. However in the longer term you may wish to download Adobe Reader and set

all .pdf files to open in Adobe. (Download from www.filehippo.com). This will al-

low you to use the standard Acrobat Reader screen with which you are more famil-

iar. After downloading adobe reader, you will need to set this as the default for .pdf files.

Scam of the Month – Another Hotel Scam (but not by the hotel!) Submitted by Peter Dowd You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. When checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for all the charges for your room). You get to your room and settle in. Someone calls the front desk and asks (for example) Room 620 - which happens to be your room. The phone rings in your room. You answer and the person on the other end says the following: 'This is the front desk. When checking in, we came across a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read your credit card number and verify the last 3 digits on the reverse side of your charge card.' Not thinking anything, you might give this person this information, since the call seems to come from the front desk. But actually, it is a scam of someone calling from outside the hotel/front desk.

*NEW SCAM * Just when you think you've heard it all. Here comes another scam. This scam is very clever. Be very careful out there! One could easily fall for this - beware of people bearing gifts! There is a new and clever credit card scam. Please circulate this. Someone it happened to says it works like this: Wednesday a week ago, I had a phone call from someone who said that he was from some outfit called: "Express Couriers" asking if I was going to be home because there was a package for me, and the caller said that the delivery would arrive at my home in roughly an hour. Sure enough, about an hour later, a uniformed delivery man turned up with a beautiful basket of flowers and wine. I was very surprised since it did not involve any special occasion or holiday and I certainly didn't expect anything like it. Intrigued about who would send me such a gift, I inquired as to who the sender was. The deliveryman's reply was, he was only delivering the gift package but allegedly a card was being sent separately; (the card has never arrived!). There was also a consignment note with the gift. He then went on to explain that because the gift contained alcohol, there was a £3.50 "delivery charge" as proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult, and not just left it on the doorstep where it could be stolen or taken by anyone. This sounded logical and I offered to pay him cash. He then said that the company required the pay-ment to be by credit or debit card only so that everything is properly accounted for. My husband who by this time, was standing beside me, pulled his wallet out of his pocket with the credit/debit card and 'John', the "delivery man", asked my husband to swipe the card on the small mo-bile card machine which had a small screen and keypad where Frank was also asked to enter the card's PIN and security number. A receipt was printed out and given to us. To our horror, between Thursday and the following Monday, £4000 had been withdrawn from our ac-count at various ATM machines. It appeared that somehow the "mobile credit card machine" which the deliveryman carried now had all the info necessary to create a "dummy" card with all our card details after my husband swiped our card and entered the requested PIN and security number. Upon finding out about the illegal transactions on our card, we immediately notified the bank which issued us the card and our account was closed. We also personally went to the Police, where it was confirmed that it is definitely a scam because sev-eral households had been similarly hit. *WARNING:* Be wary of accepting any "surprise gift or package", which you neither expected nor per-sonally ordered, especially if it involves any kind of payment as a condition of receiving the gift or pack-age. Also, never accept anything if you do not personally know or there is no proper identification of who the sender is. Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information is when you yourself initiated the purchase or transaction! *If you pass this on, it may just prevent someone else from being swindled.............!* Submitted by Robert Culley

Friday 13th December - Trip to Malaga Christmas lights. A trip perfectly organized by Beatrice. Following a relaxing journey we arrived outside the majestic Malaga cathedral in the city centre. As it was too ‘light’ to see the ‘lights’ many of us decided that an aperitif was a good way to wait for the darkness. It was at least a hundred metres before a suitable hostelry was found. Afterwards, it was only a short walk which brought us to the main illuminations. The quality and variety were excellent. Adding to the pleasure of viewing the displays was the carnival atmosphere in the traffic free streets. Crowds of people from the very young to the more ‘elderly’ were out enjoying themselves. There were street artists, sellers of all kinds, including the balloons for the kids. Music was provided by a youthful Spanish brass band. The open shops added to the pleasure of the evening for those of us looking for items, from a wide range of quality outlets. There was also a long string of attractive stalls selling tradi-tional ‘visitor’ gifts. Fortunately there was still time for a leisurely dinner at one of the number of varied restaurants nearby. A further bonus of the trip was a diversion through Marbella to see their illuminations. Beatrice per-suaded our excellent driver Alan to make the detour. An enjoyable evening. Submitted by Peter Henry If you want a double shot of Christmas Spirit visit the Belen at Malaga Town Hall. This is beautifully designed and depicts the whole Christmas Story using intricate and realistic models. Christmas music was playing and a wonderful atmosphere was created which was enjoyed equally by adults and wide-eyed children. We then looked more closely at all the available models on the gift stalls, such a wide range, including a rain cloud producing rain over a crib scene. Time, then, for viewing the spectacular lights and watching families enjoying shopping together, antici-pating Christmas and the Three Kings celebrations. We were able to see two more Belens which were not as sophisticated as the first one but were genu-ine expressions of the significance of the Christmas Story. El Pimpi's Bodega provided an enjoyable and boisterous ending to our visit. It was filled with office workers, families and a few day-trippers enjoying time together at the end of the day. Thank you, Bea, for organising such an enjoyable trip. Submitted by Margaret Howard

Sorry for the late entry of December items, all down to timing of Festive season and having to get magazine available to you for last club Thursday opening of the year. Editor PAST EVENTS

Christmas Concert 15th December 2013 The Christmas Concert rounded off the Sunday Songs of Praise sessions this year with a very good turn-out of hale and hearty singers – and those who just love carols, whether they consider themselves singers or not! The programme included everyone’s favourites and solo items, along with seasonal poems, readings and prayers. An annual tradition is now a rousing rendering of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ with individual tables competing to be the best contributors. Our thanks go to Joan Thomp-son who prepared and organised the programme, to those who brought nibbles and to those who manned the bar beforehand and at the interval. Our thanks are also due especially to Cindy and Martin Holmes for their accompaniment on keyboard and guitar respectively, not just for this evening but for their availability every 3 rd Sunday at the Club-house 4 30 for 5pm for our regular Songs of Praise. Do come and join our numbers during the rest of the year for a relaxed, informal sing-a-long. You’d be very welcome. Submitted by Heather Moore

Wednesday 25th December - Christmas Day at Clubhouse

After all the great weather we have been having so far this winter, Christmas Day dawned wild, wet & windy! Amazingly the awful weather didn't stop the hardy ICE members from enjoying a great morning at the club! Maureen had once again arranged a festive atmosphere with a present for everyone and the buffet provided by our members was superb. The food was up to gourmet standard this year, an amazing array, prompting some people to wish that they hadn't got prior arrangements for lunch after-wards. Whether it was just a 'flying visit', or the main event of the day, everyone agreed that it was very special to raise a glass (or two) with friends on Christmas morning and Maureen made everyone so welcome that it was hard to leave when the time came. This has become a very popular annual event but it is all thanks to Maureen BaldwinWinckle who works very hard in the lead up to Christmas, wrapping presents and overseeing arrangements etc. so thank you Maureen for a lovely day. Thursday 19th December - Celebrity Visit

The day of Doug's birthday. Just as Doug was about to open the meeting,

the curtains on the stage parted and 'Marilyn Monroe' appeared with the

microphone singing Happy Birthday Mr. President and proceeded to the

committee table to give him a birthday kiss amongst much hilarity from everyone present. Dougs face was a picture! A great surprise!

Thanks to Tessa who made a great Marilyn, complete with blonde wig and a slashed to the

waist white dress! Thanks also to Richard & Julie, who helped to arrange it all and Sue Potter

for the photos. Submitted by Joanna Mitchell

Thursday 19th December - Christmas Lunch at The Clubhouse Over one hundred meals were shopped for, prepared, cooked and served up to members, volunteers and guests - what a feat of hard work and organisation. Well done to Brenda and her kitchen team who I must say looked exhausted by the end of the event. The club room looked fantastically decorated and inviting, well done to Sue and her team for spending many hours setting up The bar was kept very busy, and this year we had the added attraction of home made mulled wine. Well done to Mick and his bar team. Also thanks go to the waiters and waitresses on the day, especially once again to Bea who bravely became Santa’s little elf for the day. Thanks also to Julie for entertaining diners between courses. A great day had by all, remembering it could not have taken place without our willing volunteers. From our Thanks to all the Committee for a wonderful Christmas Lunch

today it was terrific so much hard work and loads of empty

plates. Well done and thanks. Submitted by Anna Tandy.

Saturday 11th January - 2014 Welcome Back Party Submitted by Tessa Henry A great buzz was around the club as a large number of people arrived for the evening. Seating for one hundred people was arranged in the outer areas to leave the centre for dancing. Marcus Myers strummed his guitar, providing light music while we enjoyed some pre-supper drinks. The plates of food provided by everyone were a delight of various tasty morsels. Afterwards, Marcus’s strumming moved up several notches to provide a pleasant mixture of lovely ‘oldies’ from the 60’s and 70’s, to jive and jig to at one’s own pace. It was a really pleasant evening to meet up with old friends again. Thanks Doug and Joanne for the arrangements and to the willing bar helpers: Joan, Ted and Nigel.

Thursday 15th January - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out

The Juliets returned to an old favourite venue, not visited for some time, The Green Olive on

Sabinillas Paseo. A sunny but windy day so we all sat inside at tables already prepared in an

L shape. Good service, lovely food, no complaints. Bit of shuffling round organised by

Wilma so as to meet other members. Thanks Maggie for the organising. The Romeos went to a new venue, D’s Bar in what is known to British expats as Albert or

English Square just a few minutes walk from the Olive. A very pleasant small bar run by D

herself. We had the main course choice of all day breakfast or fish and chips. A strange sur-

prise was the starters, cereal, fruit and yoghurt. However many tucked in after some indeci-

sion. The main courses were very pleasant and was followed by apple and pear crumble with

custard, delicious.

A VISIT TO SURPRISING CHINA To celebrate our 40th Wedding anniversary, Bea and I decided to award ourselves a trip to China, a place we had never visited before on our travels. Our perception of China, prior to our visit, was a coun-try of poor peasants with conical hats, working in rice paddies, and a few electronic factories making Apple computers. How wrong we were! Would we need Visas? - Yes but they cost a hundred pounds each, ouch! Did we need jabs? - yes but they were all oral pills which had to be collected from the Pharmacy in Spain in a cool box and kept in the fridge! (And you have to travel to Malaga to get advice on which inoculations you should have - you cant just buy them over the counter) Would the internal Chinese airlines be safe? The local flights were all on brand new Airbuses, with English announcements, flying from brand new airports which put our European airports to shame. How would we get cash in China, do they have cash points? - The cities we visited had more cash points than we have in Spain or the UK! Most of which accepted UK cash cards. Would the hotels be OK? We booked our trip as an organised tour and the tour operators had chosen good 4 star hotels one of which even included Viagra pills and Condoms along with the usual sham-poos and shower caps! The hardness of the beds was, however, something else and we had, on occa-sion, to request additional padding. (Some mention of stone pillows was highlighted by our guide as the preference for some Chinese!) How would we get to see the sights? We were met at the airports by English speaking guides and transported everywhere in people carriers complete with a driver. As for the driving, especially in Bei-jing, well it made driving on the A7 a snip. Our first day’s outing in Beijing, the Chinese capital, was to see Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The square is really huge and was designed to hold a million people. On the day of our visit, in August it felt as if that capacity was being ap-proached as there were thousands and thousands of Chinese tourists milling around under the watchful eye of the security forces. The Square is surrounded by massive government build-ings adorned with slogans, in Chinese of course. Altogether a truly impressive sight. The Forbidden City, which fronts onto Tiananmen Square, was where 24 Chinese Emperors lived for a period of five centuries and the story goes that if you entered the city without permission then you would meet an early demise. Entry to the city from Tiananmen Square is via an archway surmounted by an enormous portrait weigh-

ing several tons of Chairman Mao. The buildings inside the city have been beautifully restored (with help from American Express!) and we looked on in wonder at the grandeur with which the Emperors must have lived, oblivious to the poverty stricken peasants in the countryside out-side. Altogether there are some 800 buildings, with 9,000 rooms within the city walls, all built in alignment to feng shui principles (literally trans-lated as "wind-water") with the centre line running through the city and where only the Emperors were allowed to walk. It took over one million labourers to build the city in the early 1,400s over a period of some 14 years. The buildings were constructed of timber and were a constant fire risk due to knocked over lanterns, wayward fireworks and the main cause, angry Eunuchs! >>26

<<25 As a result there are numerous large ornate bronze pots around the palace grounds for holding firefighting water. Also worthy of note were the pairs of huge Guardian Chinese Lions either side of the main building entrances. Close inspection revealed that the right-hand male lion usually had one paw resting on a globe representing world dominance, as the Chinese then knew it, whilst the left-hand female lion had a paw resting on a baby lion on its back representing nurture (some would also say it represented the control of the Emperors over the populace). The Chinese lions gave us a real “Chinese” feeling of actually being in China.

In the afternoon we visited the Temple of Heaven which is where the Em-peror came each year to pray to the gods for divine guidance and a good harvest. The main temple is a huge circular building supported by four mas-sive timber columns made from imported Oregon Pine after the original temple burnt down due to a lightning strike, in 1889. It is a most astonishing building, again beautifully restored and is like no other temple in Beijing or anywhere else in China. The temple is circular representing Heaven and the grounds are square representing the Earth. In the evening we were treated to a real Peking Duck dinner in a private dining room at our hotel. Peking is, of course, the old name of Beijing and the preparation of

the duck follows a strict procedure including the inflation of the duck carcass in order to loosen the skin! Consumption of the dish was only for the Emperors and the general populace only started to eat it when a large number of chefs became available after the fall of the last Emperor in 1911. The duck was delicious despite its preparation methods. Next magazine edition I will relate our trip to see the famous Great Wall of China and the incredible Terracotta Army. Dear Nana, Sarah is having her confirmation in March and St Valentines is com-ing up soon, do you want to know a fact about St. Valentine. It takes glass one million years to decompose, which means it never wears out and can be recycled an infinite number of times! Gold is the only metal that doesn't rust, even if it's buried in the ground for thousands of years.

Why not come along; We meet Monday mornings no later than

9.45am for a 10.00am start. Late arrivals cannot be guaranteed a

game. Players are organised by ‘ranking’ in order to have teams of

more or less equal standing. Most matches are played over 16 ends but this can be 18 by mutual

agreement of all players.

Dress code is predominantly white but the critical factor is footwear.

Shoes must be smooth-soled with no ‘pimples or crinkles’. This is to prevent undue damage

to the playing surface which is the duty of all to maintain in good condition.

Beginners will be coached by prior arrangement to achieve the required level to compete.

The title was deliberately chosen as most of us play Monday only. We are an informal group

and not ‘Officially Recognised’. Hence this gives us a degree of license when interpreting the

rules as officially prescribed. Alan Whiteman

International Club of Estepona - Golf Society We play twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, at Casares Costa Golf Club

where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The twice weekly competi-

tion is organised on a ‘Roll- Up’ basis and we play individual stableford, using full handi-

caps. Tee off times vary between 08.15 and 08.30am, dependent upon the time of year, and

on a good day we can have 12 or more players rolling up. It’s all very friendly, light hearted

and is open to all.

We traditionally have two major competitions a year. The Spring Cup, Stableford Competi-

tion at Dona Julia Golf Club. 8.00am for 8.45am Shot Gun Start 22nd April 2014, 46€

Green Fee. 3€ entry Fee. Please Print your Name. Handicap and Telephone Number on

club poster.

If you have not entered an ICE golf competition before, please put an *asterisk* next to

your name to be eligible for the newcomers prize.

The Autumn Cup will take place during October. These two competitions have become great

social events with a very popular celebratory luncheon after each.

The Ice Club Order Of Merit competition. The trophy will be awarded to the player recording

the best 10 individual cards achieved at the Tuesday and Friday ‘Roll- Ups’ during the 12

months between each Spring Cup.

In addition we also arrange ‘Away Days’, every 4 to 6 weeks, to other golf courses within the

local area. It is always a treat to play at other clubs and we are usually given a

preferential rate. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web

site for details of all activities. If you would like to get involved, phone or

JUST FOR A SMILE

You're a sick senior citizen and the government says they are going to sell your house to pay for your nursing care. So what do you do? Our plan gives anyone 65 years or older a gun and 4 bullets. You are allowed to shoot four Politicians. Of course, this means you will be sent to prison..... where you will get three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating, air conditioning and all the health care you need! Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a new hip, knees, kidney, lungs or heart? They’re all covered. As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you as often as they do now. And who will be paying for all of this? It’s the same government that just told you that they cannot afford to pay for your nursing care. And you can get rid of 4 useless politicians while you are at it. Plus, because you are a prisoner you don't have to pay income tax. Is UK a great country or what? Submitted by Joanna Mitchell

THE CHURCH DINNER! A group of friends from the local church wanted to get together on a regular basis, socialize and play games. The lady of the house was to prepare the meal. When it came time for Al and Janet to be the hosts, Janet wanted to outdo all the others. She decided to have mushroom-smothered steak. But mushrooms are expensive. She then told her husband, "No mushrooms, they are too expensive." He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of those mushrooms, there are plenty in the creek bed?" She said, "No, some wild mushrooms are poison." He said, "Well, I see varmints eating them and they're OK." So Janet decided to give it a try.. She picked a bunch, washed, sliced and diced them for her smothered steak. Then she went out on the back porch and gave Ol' Spot (the yard dog) a double handful. Ol' Spot ate every bite. All morning long, Janet watched Ol' Spot and the wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she decided to use them. The meal was a great success, and Janet even hired a helper lady from town to help her serve. After everyone had finished, they relaxed, socialized and played dominoes. About then, the helper lady came in and whispered in Janet's ear. She said, "Mrs Williams, Ol' Spot is dead." Janet went into hysterics. After she finally calmed down, she called the doctor and told him what had happened. The doctor said, "That's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I will call for an ambulance and I will be there as quickly as possible. We'll give everyone enemas and we will pump out everyone's stomach. Everything will be fine, just keep them calm.." Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road. The EMTs and the doctor had their suitcases, syringes and a stomach pump. One by one, they took each person into the bath room, gave them an enema and pumped out their stomach. After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, "I think everything will be fine now," and he left. They were all looking pretty weak sitting around the living room and about this time the helper lady came in and whispered to Janet, "You know, that fellow that run over Ol' Spot, never even stopped." As I always say; Communication skills are vitally important.
