City Center is not just about living. It’s about living well, and living as independently as possible for as long as possible. For some people, this means getting a little help from time to time. For others, this means a bit more help a bit more often. For one group—you know who you are—help needs to be just a phone call away, even when you cannot reach the phone. At that point, in that moment, you need a lifeline.The SCC Men’s Club has you

covered. “The Men’s Club of Sun City Center provides Philips Lifeline Personal Response equipment as a community service to anyone in Greater Sun City Center.” Don Koester, Vice President of the SCC Men’s Club said. “We used to have an installation fee, but now the Men’s Club underwrites the installation. All the individual is responsible for is a monthly subscription fee.”What does a subscriber get for

that fee? “Peace of mind, 24-7,” Koester said, “And help when

you need it at the touch of a button.”Maybe you have seen the

commercials? Those “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” adverts. With Philips Lifeline, a subscriber wears a small button on his or her necklace, wrist or watchband. When that person needs help, he or she presses that button and is instantly connected to Lifeline

representatives. That call center, based in Massachusetts, handles about 700,000 subscribers across the country. “This is a big, very well trained group.” Koester said. The Lifeline reps taking the call

speak to the caller in order to determine on the best course of action. Do they need immediate emergency help? The police? The fire department? A spouse or trusted neighbor or friend to be notified? Whatever the situation, representatives will then contact that individual or first responder and relay the information. Koester explains, “The subscriber makes the decision as to who is the default first responder. My

Men’s Club offers a lifeline

About the SCC Men’s ClubEstablished in 1962, the Men’s Club of Sun City Center is one of

the oldest and largest service clubs in SCC. The Club, a non-profit fellowship and service organization, has about 500 members. Meetings are held monthly, on the third Wednesday of the month, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Luncheon programs include informative and entertaining speakers representing a diverse range of disciplines. Three times each year, the men invite the ladies in their lives to join them for special programs specifically designed to honor and entertain them. To wrangle an invite, simply tell a current Men’s Club member you are interested in visiting. He will arrange for you to come to a meeting as a guest of the Men’s Club. about half of the Lifeline members are residents of Kings Point, only about one quarter of the Men’s Club members live there. “We would certainly like to increase our Kings Point membership. The more members we have the more good we can do.”

The Computer Club began in 1983, when Len Point had a computer problem and could not find ready answers. He made a plea for help and other PC pioneers responded as a “mutual aid society.” Club members took turns offering their homes as sites for the monthly meetings.As the PC became popular, the

Club grew. In 1988, it became affiliated with the Sun City Center Community Association. Later, it incorporated and was granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS as a tax-exempt educational organization.The Club offers a wide range

of facilities and services for the local PC community. Regular monthly meetings are held to update members on the latest equipment and software advances. The Club publishes a widely acclaimed, prize winning, 16-page monthly newsletter containing Club news, industry news and “how to” information. It also contains the very useful “Help Line” – a listing of members willing and able to assist others with specific software questions and problems.

One of the unique facilities of

the Club is its full-time Resource Center in the Atrium Building on the North SCC Campus, where qualified Monitors (the “Yellow Shirts”) assist residents with PC-related problems and questions. This operates daily, except Sunday with a dozen, state-of the art computers available. Visitors have used this facility to submit their homework, make on-line financial transfers or print out their Boarding Passes. This Center also serves as a backup facility for members and visitors who need access to their e-mail accounts, or to download programs on the Club’s high speed WiFi line. In the mornings, the Lab is used as a

Classroom for the many courses the Club offers.At its own expense, the Club has

“wired” The Atrium Building and Community Hall for WiFi – wireless operation - permitting laptop users to access the Internet on a 24/7 basis and for local organizations to make online presentations. The Computer

Club has also been instrumental in forming other groups. Several years ago, to better serve the non-Windows user, the Club facilitated the formation of a local Apple/McIntosh group, which has now spun off as its own organization. The Genealogy Society is another group formed

allowed a privilege only a select few will ever again experience. I was given the opportunity to fly in a B-24 Liberator, courtesy of a living history charity tour called Wings of Freedom. Not only is the generation who originally flew these warbirds passing away, but so, too, are the planes themselves. Of the more than 18,000 B-24s manufactured, only a handful remain intact. There are only two airworthy B-24Js in the world. One is owned by the Collings Foundation, which sponsors Wings of Freedom. The other is owned by Fantasy of Flight in Polk City, FL, and was last flown in 1997.The Collings B-24J flies at least

220 times per year, mostly from tour stop to tour stop. So, maybe I’m not in such limited company after all. But, when you consider who I had the privilege of flying with, it still feels pretty special.Robert Arrington Sr. was a

young farm boy when the U.S. Army plucked him out of his small town and prepared him to go off to war. He started out in administration at “headquarters” before being sent over to the Air Corps for training as a ball turret gunner. By the time he finished training, the Air Corps was finished with Goering and his Luftwaffe, so Arrington never had to go off to war, flying in one of the most dangerous jobs in the Air Force. The 92-year-old had not been in a Liberator since completing training, but today, he would be flying once again. Joining him (and me) on this flight, was Arrington’s son, Robert Jr.During the preflight, Arrington

talked about how precious the time is that he gets to spend with his son. “He takes me everywhere. All over the place.” Senior said. “I don’t remember half of what we do anymore, but I have a lot of

fun while we’re doing it.”Senior said he remembers

his military days well, and he shares as much as he can remember with Junior. His stories are not of bronze-statue super heroes, but of boys and young men, with young men’s senses of humor and perspectives on life. The stories are raw and honest and funny, and I can’t help but wonder how they may have grown in the telling. As all the best stories do. As we were seated on the

plane my mind assembled a movie reel of imagined reality. I’d never flown a bomber into battle. Not even in training. All my imaginings come from still shots and war movies. I glanced over at Senior and wondered what he was seeing, his eyes unfocused, his gaze always coming back to the ball turret at our feet. I wondered if he was remembering the first time he lowered himself into those tight confines. Just him, his machine guns and thousands of feet of open air.Junior asks Senior a question

and the father turns to the son. “Yes it was loud. When all those 50s opened up, it was loud. I mean LOUD.”

Junior turned to me. “Most gunners ended up with hearing loss.”

“What!” Senior asked, a twinkle in his eye.At that point the engines roared

and the plane moved down the runway. Once in the air, with the waist gun hatches open, it was tough to do any more talking. But there was sure plenty to see. On this flight a P-51 Mustang would be flying escort. To look out a window and see that gleaming fighter on our wing sent my imagination into overdrive. Suddenly I was five years old and that plane was just begging to be explored. I tried out each waist gun, then crawled up into the nose to get that view. I squeezed along the narrow walkway, careful not to step on the bomb bay doors. In pre-flight, a flight crewman warned us that those were rigged to fall away and would not hold our weight. Good to know. At one point we flew over

Fantasy of Flight, home of the other airworthy B-24J. There on the tarmac, two WW2-era planes waited, a fighter and a bomber. Talk about completing the picture. We landed in Zephyrhills, FL,

where the B-24 and P-51 were scheduled to appear with a B-17 in a living history exhibit. Veterans and warplane history buffs of all ages were already waiting when the Liberator taxied to a stop. Chatter along the fence line ceased as the Arringtons crossed in front of them, Senior

beaming proudly beneath his Air Force cap. In that moment, the attention of men and boys who had come to marvel at machines of war, was held, instead, by a man, an aging warrior who said he would have liked to have flown into battle at least once, but was, at the same time, relieved he never got the chance.

Later, in the pilot’s lounge, I asked Robert Arrington his thoughts about his final B-24 mission. “This was fun.” He said. “Like I remember…but different too.”Senior admitted he wasn’t

really sure what he meant by that, and I didn’t press. I figure those memories are his to keep or give away. I’ll just have to use my imagination.

Sun City Center residents! It’s good to be back as your HCSO resource deputy, even if it is just temporary. This month I wanted to update the residents of our community about several issues that will be of interest to you. Did you know that, in the

past year we’ve had several burglaries involving rear sliding glass doors? Many of these are crimes of opportunity. Unlocked doors leaving homes vulnerable to bad guys. Do you know what you should do to reduce the likelihood of becoming a target?Did you know that, at this time

each year, the scams really start picking up? Phone, mail and walkup scams often increase during this time of year. Do you know what you need to know

to avoid becoming a victim?Did you know that, of all things,

the theft of lawn decorations and lawn ornaments is increasing in our area? People are coming home to simply find their lawn ornaments gone. Do you know what you can do to keep this from happening to you?If you did not know these

things or are unaware of how you may be able to take action, then please come to our next monthly community meeting. Attendance at these meetings has decreased over

the last several months and, consequently, we have seen an increase in certain types of crimes, like those listed above. These informative meetings allow residents to get the latest news, crime trends and the knowledge they need to take the proper precautions and avoid becoming a victim.

For Kings Point residents:The meetings are hosted the

second Tuesday of every month at 1:00 PM in the fiber arts room of the main clubhouse.

For Sun City Center residents:The meetings are hosted

the second Thursday of every month at 9:00 AM at the security squad.

A third meeting, open to any residents of KP or SCC is held the third Wednesday of every month at the Sun Trust bank at 1525 Rickenbacker Dr. Please take advantage of

these important informational meetings. An informed populace is better aware and able to protect itself from many different types of crime.

In that time the program was acquired by the Philips Corporation. “This is the premier program of this kind in the country,” Koester said, “Our goal, what we have done, is to use volunteerism to reduce the expense and offer this to the community at a reduced price.”Interested persons may get any

Colonel Luke Lloyd, USA (ret) February 8Luther (Luke) Lloyd retired from the US Army as a Colonel following

30 years of service. He served in Airborne Infantry and Armor combat units as well as Intelligence (Defense Intelligence Agency, DIA). His military schooling included Arabic language. His civilian schooling included a Masters Degree in Arab Studies from the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. As an intelligence officer, he specialized in the “Middle East.” He is the author of a book entitled “Out of Darkness.”Colonel Lloyd’s talk, “The Islam You Do Not Understand” will give

the audience a general view of the political and religious goals of Islam. He will discuss Muslim activities both nationally and in the state of Florida.You do not have to be a veteran to attend this luncheon meeting.

Sun City Center Veterans’ HoedownThe annual Sun City Center Veterans’ Dinner/Dance will take place

A social hour with appetizers will start at 5:00 p.m. A three-entrée buffet (steamship round, fried chicken, pulled pork) by Banquet Masters with their famous dessert bar will follow at 6:00 p.m. The program will be a mix of patriotism and entertainment. Music and dancing will be provided by The KEGG featuring Kelly Emerson and Gary Garbelman. There will also be additional special entertainment. Dress is casual – country & western, patriotic, or military. No shorts or flipflops please. BYOB and setups; glasses and ice will be provided. MOWW presents award to SCC CERT ChairmanThe Military Officers of the World Wars

(MOWW) presented William Barron, Chairman of the Sun City Center (SCC) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) with the MOWW Distinguished Service Award at their January luncheon. The award was presented to Mr. Barron by Sheila Greason, Commander of the SCC MOWW Chapter (see photo) at the SCC Freedom Plaza Club on January 17, 2013.The award reads “You have

coordinated the volunteer first responder organizations with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in support of the States Silver Alert system and have supported local Community Associations during special events.”Mr. Barron discussed the specific functions of the CERT team,

emphasizing the importance of the many volunteer members who are responsible for making it possible for the team to carry out its many responsibilities. The CERT program is designed to complement professional Fire and Police organizations in disaster situations where the normal rescue and medical services are overwhelmed. The 200+ local CERT members received training from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue under a FEMA-funded program.

MOWW to sponsor third Military BallThe Sun City Center Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars

(MOWW) will be the coordinating sponsor of a third Formal Military Ball on November 9th, 2013. As in the past, attendance will be open to all, i.e., prior military service is not a requirement. The previous two Military Balls were well attended and by all accounts thoroughly enjoyed by the attendees. MFST holds Community Leaders Luncheon The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) recently held a luncheon

to honor the leaders of the Sun City Center (SCC) and Kings Point (KP) military and civic organizations. The luncheon was held at the Sun City Center Freedom Plaza Club on January 10, 2013 and the guest speakers were Ed Barnes, president of the SCC Community Association (CA), Eileen Peco, president of the Kings Point Federation, and Colin Howgill, chairman of the MFST Board of Trustees. Ed Barnes discussed the results of a recently publicized survey that was taken by the SCC residents, as well as both long and short term CA plans, Eileen Peco discussed the KP five-seven year development plan as well as the Heritage Park renovation and Colin Howgill thanked all of the honored guests for their generous support of the MFST goals. Don Shings, current president of MFST, introduced the guests and provided background material on the organization.

MFST is a 501c3 charitable trust established in 1992 and headquartered in SCC Freedom Plaza. Using contributions the MFST provides significant benefits to both national and local individuals and programs related to military and federal employees. Some of the beneficiaries are JROTC cadets; scholarships to children and grandchildren; assistance to Homeless Women Veterans; Guide Dog training; the VA’s Helping Hand program; and other similar charitable endeavors.

2013 Kings Point Ryder Cup There are still a few spaces left for the 2013 Ryder Cup. This year's

event is being organized by Harry McMahon (center), with Bruce Manning and Jack Moran (left) and Butch Gadd and Brian Adams (right) as Captains and Co-captains. It all starts on Saturday night with a formal sit down dinner for players and their significant other. The captains and organizer give speeches that have the audience laughing. The men are asked to wear jacket and tie for the occasion. The tie in the color that has been chosen for their team. The ladies often dress in the color their golfer will be wearing the next day. Photos are taken of the teams with the trophy. Each team believes theirs is the winning photo that will be sent to the newspaper. Sunday afternoon the golfers are battling it out in match play as the ladies cheer their golfers on as they pass the 1st, 4th and 9th holes. After golf, another meal is served in the Kings Point Golf Clubhouse. It is a party atmosphere for the whole weekend. Ryder Cup weekend is February 9 and 10. Cost is $68.00 per couple, $37.00 Single.

There are 100 UCC churches in Zimbabwe. The country is 98% Christian. Rev. Minister of the Florida Conference, United Church of Christ and began his duties as Conference Minister in July of 2007. Prior to that time he was on the Conference staff of the Connecticut Conference for 10 years, serving as a Regional Minister. He also was a local church pastor for sixteen years serving two churches in the Connecticut Conference.Rev. Siladi has been involved in all of the settings of the United Church

of Christ. He has served in the local church as pastor, in the Association setting as a member of a Committee on Ministry, in the Conference setting as staff and in the national setting as a participant in the UCC History, Theology and Polity Network. He chaired the General Synod 25 Nominating Committee and was the host Conference Minister for General Synod 28 in Tampa. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Building and Loan Fund of Local Church Ministries and the Directorate of Local Church Ministries. He is the Chairperson of the Council of Conference Ministers. He is one of the writers of the UCC “Affirming Faith” Confirmation curriculum and has written for various faith based periodicals.As Conference Minister his primary responsibilities include offering

a ministry of leadership and relationship, communicating the mission and ministry of the Florida Conference, providing programmatic and Conference staff oversight, assuring business and financial oversight and representing the Florida Conference to the wider church. the Florida room last week in recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Laura Hamilton, Clearwater/Tampa Bay Task Force on Human Trafficking Coordinator and Founder and President of “Bridging Freedom, Inc., was the speaker.She said that Florida is #3 in

the United States for all forms of Human Trafficking and the Tampa area is #5 on the FBI’s list of cities in the US with the highest concentration of child

sex trafficking. Bridging Freedom is a 501 c 3 non-profit created for the purpose of providing a long-term, therapeutic, safe home for children who have been victims of Human Sex Trafficking.This horrific crime is in every

community in the United States and the Sun City Center group is being used as a model to start other community campaigns. Most recently, they have launched a Brandon Community Campaign Against Human Trafficking.

Contemporary India on Friday, February 8, 2013. GFWC SCC Woman’s Club Sponsors Campaign

GFWC SCC Woman’s Club president, Jean Smith announced the meeting on February 21 will be hosted by the club’s International Outreach Committee. June Wallace, who chairs the committee is also the Facilitator for the Tampa Bay Community Campaign Against Human Trafficking. The program, “The Sad State of Human Trafficking in Florida” will feature community a w a r e n e s s information and various Human Trafficking prevention projects. There will be several displays explaining how people may get involved if they wish. Projects such as “Safe Schools, Safe Libraries” help assure school and library computers are kept free from p o r n o g r a p h y ; another project, “Artreach” is focused on educating middle school children about Human Trafficking, how to identify it and not get caught in the web. Anyone who would like to know more about the Tampa Bay

AMICI Meeting newsMeteorologist John Frizzola presented his talk “Italian Meteorologists

and the Age of Science” to a packed meeting room of AMICI members and guests. The Age of Science reached its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Italian scientists of that era laid the physical and mathematical foundations of the sciences used today to observe and predict the weather. They belonged to the famous Academia Cimento of Florence.Using overhead transparencies and actual instruments, Mr. Frizzola

took the audience from early science to today’s applications. After the presentation he gave attendees time to make comments and ask questions. This was Mr. Frizzola’s third program for AMICI. C . A . R . E . A n i m a l Shelter has r e c e n t l y partnered with the Mary Petro P r o g r a m , in Sun City Center, to p r o v i d e free pet food to p e o p l e who have qualified for food and medic ine assistance. According to Don Hinderliter, b o a r d member at C.A.R.E., the pet food will supplement the assistance provided by the Mary Petro Program by helping to also feed their pets. The pet food is being distributed to qualified persons and charitable organizations in the South Shore through the shelter’s “Keep Pets Healthy” initiative. The “Keep Pets Healthy” initiative is sponsored by, and is funded

through, a generous grant to C.A.R.E. from the Banfield Charitable Foundation and will last until the grant monies are depleted. Participants in the Mary Petro Program must be full time residents of

Sun City Center or Kings Point who are in dire need of assistance for food and/or medicine. They must meet certain income guidelines are usually referred to the Mary Petro Program by a neighbor, friend, house of worship or from with the SCC Community Association or the Kings Point Federation.

The Irish Connection held its first General Meeting of the year on Friday, January 4, 2013, in the SCC Atrium Florida Room. President Fred Lofland gave special recognition to Larry Vaughn and Ian Donnelly for their wonderful efforts in the creation of the Irish Tinker Wagon which won 1st place in the Club category in the 2012 ‘Tis the Sea-Sun Golf Cart Parade held December 8th. Following was a presentation by Ruskin Guest Speaker Kelly Kowall, (Proud Gold Star Mother of Specialist Corey Kowall, Sept. 20, 2009, K.I.A.), who is Founder and President of FAVE Boating Expeditions, Inc., which provides boating trips to Veterans, Soldiers, and Gold Star Families who have endured a loss, and Eyes on the Sky’s-Project Corregidor, a non-profit Armed Forces Peer Mentoring and Grief Program to provide healing and hope for Soldiers and Veterans who have endured the loss of a comrade in arms. Brigid Gaurino spoke of an Irish Dance Class she is planning and

passed around a sign-up sheet for those wishing to participate. The social committee provided a generous amount of snack foods suitable for the evening with a “get to know your neighbor” theme. The February General Meeting will be held Feb 1st, 6:30PM, in the Florida Room. Kings Point Hula DancersThis active group meets each Wednesday at 11 am in The Studio in the Kings Point North Club House. It brings together ladies who love the songs of the Hawaiian Islands and who enjoy learning to dance the hula. Various types of the hula are taught by the group’s leader, Darlene Walters, from old Hawaiian chants to more modern “hapa haole” hulas, some using native musical implements. The group has performed at The Queen’s Luncheon and will do so again in March 2013 and is available as entertainment for functions. Call Darlene for more information - 633.6839.

British Connection Christmas Tea Follow Up

Once again the British Connection Christmas Tea was a “sell-out” with a wait list. Returning members and their guests were entertained by Barbara Carlin from the Organ Club & Keyboard Club who played many well-recognized sing along Christmas carols and holiday songs. Guests also participated in the annual interactive rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” completing their afternoon along with full tummies and good spirits to begin holiday festivities.

Festival, held the final weekend in January, is the unofficial kickoff for festival season in Central Florida. The smallish, one-day downtown Dade City celebration of the tiny citrus fruit known as the kumquat is the pride of Dade City and a sort of dress rehearsal for the larger fairs and festivals held in February and March. Sponsored by the Dade City

Chamber of Commerce the Kumquat Festival offers booths, vendors, live entertainment and just about any sort of kumquat concoction you can think of. Booth offerings at the 2013 festival included a farmer’s market, fine art, woodworking, crafts, home décor, sports memorabilia and politically-charged t-shirts. This is the 16th year the Dade

City Chamber of Commerce has presented this festival and, I have to tell you, they do a darn good job of organizing the event. Roughly 40,000 festivalgoers pack a four-block radius, but the crowd is orderly and you really don’t get any of the logjams or rude behavior you might expect. Over and over again, folks from out of town remarked about how much fun they were having and how friendly everyone was. The folks at the Chamber will tell you that’s just part of Dade City’s charm, and, as someone who gets up that way a fair bit, I’d have to agree. It really is “nice” here. Even those aforementioned politically-charged t-shirts only elicited polite disagreement, rather than screaming, fist shaking and finger pointing. Fans stood next to the booth chatting companionably why folks of a different opinion than the vendor simply shook their heads and mumbled under their breath as they passed by. So, it’s safe to say that this Dade

City shindig is passing sweet. It’s also a little bit on the tart side. At least those kumquats can be. The little fruit, roughly the size of

a walnut, comes in two varieties – sweet and tart. But it’s sort of like wines. Sweet ain’t exactly sweet, and tart will hit you like a dry wine if you don’t see it coming. It can be an acquired taste. But, up here, they love them both. Folks in Dade City put kumquats in pies, jams, jellies, salsas and wines. Of course, you can also just pick one up and pop it in your mouth, peel and all. The peels are similar in texture to oranges, but much thinner, so you can eat the whole thing, minus the occasional seed. One piece of advice, when sampling, try the tart variety first. Just trust me on this. So, this time next January, if you

like browsing eclectic arts and crafts and enjoy fair food hot from the fryer, take a trip up to Dade City for the kumquat festival. For more information, click over to www.kumquatfestival.org.

Avoiding the FluNot only has the flu arrived early this season, but it appears

to moving quickly. Seniors are at risk of becoming extremely ill from the flu, so it’s up to us to do everything we can to avoid catching it.We say this to little kids all the time: “Keep your hands away

from your face.” But it’s true. Granted, the flu is respiratory and is generally spread through someone sneezing or coughing near us, but flu germs can live on surfaces. If transferred to our hands and then our face, we can catch the flu.An important point: People who have the flu can give it to

you a whole day before they even know they’re getting sick.Some hints to avoid the flu:•Carry hand wipes when you shop. If the store doesn’t have

any near the carts, use yours to wipe down the handle and seat before you touch it.•Use alcohol-based wipes on your phone and doorknobs at

home, just in case.•Stock up on hand sanitizer and keep a small bottle with you

when you go out.•Stay out of stores after school hours when small children

might be with their parents.If you haven’t had a flu shot for some reason, call your doctor

and ask if you should have one. Age alone, if you’re over 65, can put you in a high-risk category, and so can any medical condition you might have. If you do get the flu, ask your doctor about a prescription for

an antiviral drug. The drugs work best if started within two days of getting sick. They can make the symptoms a little easier to handle, and they can prevent complications like pneumonia.Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer

Blue Chip began in about 1956 when Chevron Oil, Thrifty Drugs and several grocery stores in California began to offer them as premiums. Interfaith Council Honors Scholarship Recipients at Holiday LuncheonThe Interfaith Council of Sun

City Center recently held its Annual Holiday Luncheon at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in SCC. Attending the luncheon were Council Members of the IFC and volunteers who work at the Nearly New Shop. Special guests were 29 out of 68 recipients of the College Scholarships awarded to them for their continuing education. Now attending colleges such as Florida State, University of South Florida,

University of Central Florida, University of Tampa, Hillsborough Community College, and other colleges, all are graduates of Lennard High School or East Bay High School. They shared their stories on how the scholarships have made a difference in their lives. All were grateful for the generosity of the community for supporting the Nearly New Shop that generates the funding for the scholarships through the sale of

donated items. The Interfaith Council has

awarded 68 new and continuing scholarships this past year, for a total of $136,000. These scholarships are given to graduating seniors and to successful college students on a continuing basis. In addition, many charities and organizations received grants from the council this past year from proceeds generated by the Nearly New Shop.

29 of the 68 Scholarship recipients attended the luncheon sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Sun City Center. Jacob Netzley, above, a

The late Sidney Lenz used to tell the story of the time, many years ago, when he played against a man he called Mr. Grumpy, who fancied himself a very good bridge player. It was back in the days of auction bridge, and because the bidding at that time was altogether different in purpose from what it is today, it is not given. Suffice it to say that the final contract was four spades played by Lenz (South) and doubled by Mr. Grumpy (East).A diamond was led, East

cashing two diamond tricks and shifting to the queen of clubs. Lenz won with the ace and cashed the A-K of spades, Mr. Grumpy following with the nine and jack. Having failed to find the trumps

divided 2-2, Lenz was now in trouble. He had no entry to dummy to utilize the J-10 of clubs, and as East was marked by his double with the king of hearts, two heart losers seemed inevitable.So Lenz led the king of clubs,

hoping Mr. Grumpy would make a mistake, and that worthy gentleman obliged by ruffing with his seven of spades, establishing dummy’s six as an entry to the clubs.As he ruffed, Mr. Grumpy

remarked that his clever falsecard of the 9-J of spades had apparently caused Lenz to miscount the trumps. He further twitted Lenz for having failed to make an overtrick in the doubled contract.However, when Lenz pointed

out that the contract surely would have failed if East had not ruffed the king of clubs, a sadly chastened and deflated Mr. Grumpy was compelled to retire meekly from the field of battle.
