special thanks

The definition of “remarque” is a small, personalized drawing or symbol that an artist adds (near his or her signature) on a print. it is a personalized touch that adds value and uniqueness to the piece. When creating a name for FAU’s first visual annual publication, Remarque seemed appropriate considering we are leaving our personalized mark with the creation of this magazine and adding value to the University’s downtown visual programs.

The inspiration to create a visual annual came from Coastlines, FAU’s literary magazine. Coastlines has been around for over 40 years so we felt it was only right that the downtown visual programs have their own outlet and ultimately create their own legacy though a publication.

The most important step in my eyes was promoting Remarque, raising awareness around campus, and encouraging students to submit. Without great work it’d be impossible to have a great visual journal. After 3 months of promo we had over 500 submissions by 150 students we juried the work down to 150 pieces created by 40 students.

I hope you enjoy Remarque.

Designers’ edge logo contest

In the fall of 2011 the members of Designers’ Edge decided to sponsor a competition for a new logo. The contest was open to all members of the group. Johanna Björk, a FAU graphic design alumni and past president of Designers’ Edge, served as the juror. Johanna was a natural choice considering she designed a previous version of logo and has enjoyed a successful design career since graduation. Samples of her work can be seen at www.johannabjork.se/.

Juror’s commentsMotivation: It’s a good mix of simple and dynamic. The symbol and the type work well together, but are also strong enough to stand on their own. There’s a nice, subtle “edge”-reference that I think works well. I’d be interested to see how color can be used to bring this to the next level.

Designers’ edge poster contest

There’s pretty much two schools of thought in design: “do more with less” and “do more with more.” This was the objective behind Designers’ Edge’s first poster design contest. The contest was juried by James Klutez, Creative Director of Brand Tango. www.brand-tango.com

Do morewith lessmoreDesign is everything and nothing; it is subtle yet bold, it is discreet but direct. Good design invokes a reaction! It must stand out but at the same time blend into the back-ground. It is apparent to those who seek it and transparent to those who do not.

The Designers’ Edge student group endeavors to promote and share the power ofgraphic design, and to explore the influence that it has on our daily lives. Throughjuried exhibitions, guest lectures, and special promotions we raise awarenessabout the purpose and meaning of graphic design. We wish to inspire not onlygraphic designers and visual artists, but the general population as well. The effectof graphic design extends through all facets of our existence; it affects our feelings,our thoughts, and our beliefs. It is what we create that defines our perceptions of the world around us. We hope to inspire everybody to take a closer look, to join in the dialogue, and to take an active role in defining our world.

Life Just is poster contest

The independent film Life Just Is launched a competition inviting applicants to submit designs for our lead poster. From February 7 – 21, 2011 the entries were simultaneously shortlisted by a panel of industry experts and a public vote run on the movie’s Facebook page. The ultimate winner was decided by
