Entry #1 Womens Wear Daily-February 17th, 2012

In the article, “Dolce and Gabbana, Monica Bellucci Team Up”, Martens discusses the

importance of a good spokesperson for any company, especially a cosmetics line. Dolce and

Gabbana made the decision to team up with Monica Bellucci for their new limited edition

cosmetics line. D&G personally approached Bellucci as they are personal friends for many years

and stated that working with her is like, “working with a family member“. The company chose her

because she already has a strong appeal to audiences all over the world. It will be focused on the

new Monica Lipstick line that reflects shades of lipsticks based on your mood, during different

parts of the day. The lipsticks will come in six different colors and will retail for $32.00 each.

Dolce & Gabbana, Monica Bellucci Team Up By Cynthia Martens

When Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were looking for a new face for their beauty collection, they didn’t have to look

far in settling on Monica Bellucci, who had recently returned to the Italian design house.

“We are very old friends of Monica’s,” said Gabbana, reached by phone. “We must have met in 1989 or 1990.…We really grew

up together.”

Describing Bellucci as “a fantastic woman, very sunny, very feminine,” Gabbana said that for him and design partner Dolce,

working with Bellucci was “like working with a family member. She’s our icon, she’s the emblem of Dolce & Gabbana.”

So much so that Bellucci will also front a limited edition makeup line, the Monica Lipstick Collection, which will hit stores May

12.

“Monica has a strong appeal to consumers all over the world,” said Luigi Feola, vice president of P&G Prestige, which holds

the beauty license, noting the company hopes Bellucci will help attract new consumers of all ages. “I think it’s also a

testament to how respected we are within the makeup business, that we attract a celebrity of the caliber of Monica, in

Page 5: Fashion Journal 2012

5

addition to what we already have with Scarlett [Johansson] and Felicity Jones,” he said, naming the other two faces of Dolce

& Gabbana Make Up.

He added Dolce & Gabbana’s cosmetics line is currently expanding distribution. “We are rolling out quite fast, but what we

want to be sure of is that we do it right,” he said, naming Italy and Russia as key regions.

The new lipsticks will be available in six shades and will cost $32 each. By the time of the launch, the Dolce & Gabbana color

collection will be in about 120 to 150 doors in the U.S., the U.K., Italy, Russia, Greece, Spain and the Middle East. Feola and

Gabbana declined to discuss sales projections.

“The idea for the collection was to create different shades, different colors depending on your mood of the day, your state of

mind,” Bellucci said, noting she was “honored” to be working with her friends Dolce and Gabbana once again. “I love all

shades in the collection and feel drawn to the different colors, depending on how I feel.”

“Lipstick says a lot about a woman. It is her most traditional gesture,” Bellucci added. “I remember my grandmother even

though she wasn’t a young woman anymore, would always take her mirror and put on some red lipstick before going to

church. Of course it wasn’t to show off, but it was a feminine gesture for her own pleasure. And when I was a little girl, I

loved seeing the way she was taking care of herself.”

Asked to explain her attachment to the Dolce & Gabbana brand over the years, Bellucci said, “I really admire the way that

they channel sensuality into their work, whether that’s in an overtly feminine way, or sometimes with really subtle touches

that aren’t immediately obvious but really catch your attention.”

The advertising campaign for the Monica Lipstick Collection — shot by photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott in

London in October 2011, with makeup by Pat McGrath — draws inspiration from the golden era of Italian cinema, evoking the

classic, voluptuous beauty of actresses such as Sophia Loren. It will run in print starting in May in Italy, the U.S., the U.K.,

Russia and the Middle East.

Although P&G declined to discuss figures, industry sources estimate that the first-year sales target of the lipstick collection

could reach well over $6 million, with a promotional war chest between $6 million to $10 million.

Entry #2 Business Week- February 2, 2012

In the article, “Neon Fashions Challenge Black” by Timberlake, the main focus is on the

new upcoming trend for spring. The 1960’s neon colors are making a comeback and this time they

are raising the sales 4%. Neon is appearing in women’s clothing, shoes and handbags in every

store even department stores such as Bloomingdales and Nordstrom’s. The industry expects the

colors to generate faster sales for accessories like bags and shoes. The trend is coming on so

strong, it’s expecting to replace the ongoing love of black fashion which has continued the last 30

years. The attraction for color is caused by the post recession blues. What’s a better way to

cheer yourself up than with a pop of color with fashion and accessories.

Neon Fashions Challenge Black as 4% Apparel Growth Seen: Retail February 02, 2012

By Cotten Timberlake

Brace yourselves, black-fashion addicts. Color may be making its biggest comeback since the 1960s.

Women’s clothes, handbags and shoes appearing at chains from Bloomingdale’s to Nordstrom Inc. are more colorful than usual for a spring season. The collections to be unveiled when New York Fashion Week begins Feb. 9 may push the trend into fall.

The multicolored palette will help spur a 4 percent gain in women’s apparel sales this year, faster than the 2.5 percent increase to $109.6 billion recorded in the 12 months ended in November, according to NPD Group Inc. It will generate faster bag and shoe sales, too, the Port Washington, New York-based market research firm said.

“Designers recognize that dramatic change is what drives growth,” Marshal Cohen, NPD’s chief industry analyst, said. “When the recession is coming, you get conservative. When the recession is happening, you start designing with bold changes. Then it takes a year for it to hit the market.”

Women’s apparel dominates the floors of U.S. department- store chains. At Nordstrom, it represented about a third of the chain’s estimated $10.7 billion sales in the most recent fiscal year.

Industry watchers have predicted a color comeback before, only to be proved mostly wrong by black-garbed fashionistas.

Lisa Pak, proprietor of a Manhattan boutique called Patron of the New and a devotee of all things black, is a skeptic.

“My shop’s spring orders reflect my and my clients’ taste: We all love black,” she said.

Fashion Stranglehold

Black has had a “stranglehold” on fashion for more than 30 years, according to David Wolfe, creative director of Doneger Group, a New York-based fashion forecaster. In the early ‘80s Japanese designers including Yohji Yamamoto invaded Paris with their all-black collections, he said. Then came so-called Heroin Chic, and black became hip.

“When the general public finally latched on to the notion that everybody can be cool, black was locked in,” Wolfe said.

Still, two trends may reverse black’s momentum, Wolfe said. Consumers suffering post-recession blues need a lift, and Latin America culture, with its colorful emphasis, is influencing American tastes, he said.

Bright colors have risen in the Pantone Color Institute’s twice-yearly top-10 color ranking since 2009, pushing neutrals down, said Leatrice Eiseman, its executive director. Tangerine Tango orange, Solar Power yellow and Bellfower purple topped the list for this spring. The ranking included only two neutral shades, Driftwood and Starfish, which rated ninth and tenth, respectively. The Carlstadt, New Jersey, firm polls designers to make its forecasts.

Cobalt Blues

Wolfe, 70, hasn’t seen designers fall this hard for color - - from bold cobalt blues to soft peony pinks -- since the Pop- driven ‘60s and the time in the early ‘80s when French designer Christian Lacroix was important, he said.

Retail websites already are touting their spring colors.

Macy’s Inc.’s Bloomingdale’s showed what it called “totally shocking” items with “color-charged punch,” including a Marc by Marc Jacobs leather messenger bag in “electro blue,” white and black for $498. “Get some color,” Gap Inc. urged, touting neon-green bordered scarves for $29.95.

At Nordstrom, demand for extra-colorful items appeared last fall and is growing even faster into spring, said Jeffrey Kalinsky, the Seattle-based chain’s executive vice president of designer merchandising.

Kalinsky says he’s optimistic that more women have developed the same kind of confidence in wearing color that celebrities have exhibited, as Natalie Portman did with the hot pink Lanvin gown she wore to the Golden Globes.

“Who wants to walk into a party and fade?” Kalinsky said.

Amanda DiLauro, 25, a marketing coordinator in Manhattan, says she loves black because it has a couture-like aesthetic and brings maturity to her wardrobe.

Still, she said she’s “loving the neon accessories this season. I’m thinking of pairing hot pink accessories, like belts and bangles, into my spring styles, but definitely not all.”

Entry #3 Vogue- December 9, 2011

In the article, “Flash Back: The top 12 trends of 2011”, changing fashion was a consistent

trend throughout the year. From changing hemlines to fabulous prints, every week was a new

look. The article includes a slideshow with the 12 trends and how they are worn on the streets.

The trends include, wide legged pants, bold tropical prints, long clean train length gowns, Navajo

western dress, bold pop art stripes, soft scalloped waves, polished punk, sharp tailored pieces,

floral appliqués, lace, two-toned plaids, and snakeskin shades.

Flash Back: The Top Twelve Fashion Trends of 2011 December 09, 2011

Fashion is certainly guilty of being ephemeral. One day, hemlines have risen to micromini

proportions; a week later everyone is wearing floor-grazing maxi skirts—and then, just when you

thought nineties minimalism had officially made a comeback, a print explosion suddenly takes

over the runways. This transitory nature is documented each month in the “Flash: Talking

Fashion” section of Vogue—where we dissect the most compelling trends from the runways and

feature the real women who wore them best. As the year draws to a close, we look back at each

issue from 2011 and highlight the top twelve fashion and accessories trends that left a lasting

impression on us.

Entry #4 Fashion Observation

The upcoming spring season in women’s fashion seems to be including lots of color. The

usual pastels are making a comeback as well other bright neon colors continuing from the fall

season. According to style.com, pale pastel colors are one of the biggest trends incorporating

color blocking. Some designers that have included this trend are Philip Lim, Balmain, Calvin Klein,

and Carolina Herrera. Another trend observation I’ve made would be 50’s sculptural silhouettes.

I’ve seen lots of peplums a long a line skirts with both thicker fabrics and sheer fabrics such as

organza. This style resembles Parisian couture fashion that is grand and fabulous. From another

source Vogue.com has different trends for spring such as pleats, and a shorts trend. Pleats were

shown in designers shows such a Prada, Bottega Veneta, and Chloe. I have to say that when

shopping for my own Spring wardrobe pleats skirts and even pants were very popular at many

stores. The shorts trends were shown Jil Sanders runway show, Balenciaga, and Versace. A

similarity that I see in all the collections is great textures and colors.

Entry #5 Soft and Hard Line Merchandise

When walking into Nordstrom’s I was attracted to five different trends throughout the

whole store. The trends that stood out were colorful stripes, preppy style, color blocking, floral

embellishments, and neutrals. The trend of stripes was in every section from shoes to men’s ties

and even home décor. The majority were bright colors like reds, coral, turquoises, and greens.

The preppy style I feel like I always see especially in the men’s section. This trend ranges from

colorful polo’s and checkered boat shoes. They have the same in the women’s section but a much

smaller variety. Color blocking, one of the most popular trends was included in almost every

department of the store. From kitchen plates to purses and even the children’s section all had

bright color blocking. The trend is usually shown with bright colorful key detail. The floral trend

remained mostly in the women’s section. This varied between prints and embroidery details

usually on garments or purses. One example of embroidery details would be embellished collars.

Last but not least the neutrals trend is still in the midst of all the color. Neutrals will always be

necessary to mix with all the color therefore it was in every section of the store. Because

Nordstrom’s are all good quality merchandise, each piece is made of the best quality fabrics and

materials.

Entry #6 WGSN Trend Report

In backing up the trends I saw at Nordstrom’s, I reviewed the WGSN website to see if the

trends matched up. The top trends for spring according to WGSN are heavy glitter, embellished

collars, decoupage lace, sporty beading, and fringing. I found that some of the trends were

intertwined such as the floral I saw with the decoupage lace and the embroidery details with the

sporty beading. I guess that I had seen a little bit of each of the trend at the store but much more

toned down compared to the examples WGSN was using. The one thing that I did not see that much

of at Nordstrom’s was the fringe trend. I saw it on a few handbags but really didn’t see it

repeating itself throughout the clothing. One of the big trends I saw at Nordstrom’s as well as

other stores are the embellished collars. The masculine button down shirts with the embellished

collars is one of the big trends right now. Overall, I think that trends are ever-changing therefore

each of the trends will at one point be the new big thing.

Entry #8- Predict the Future

My predictions for the future seasons of fall and winter coming up would have to be a

mixture of dark prints with lighter colors that pop, and an addition of luxurious thick fabrics like

wool silk used in a continuation for color blocking. I have already seen stores incorporating color

blocking for the spring and summer with light pastels and neon colors, but for the fall and winter I

think it will change to look a little more polished and dark. According to WGSN the color blocking

trend will continue with metallic fabrics. Making the garment a little more luxurious metallic’s

always make anyone look a little fancier. There will also be metallic’s incorporated in lavish

jacquard prints. From the examples off the runway, the prints will be extremely ornate and

expensive looking whether its pants or a jacket. Another mixture with the metallic trends will be

metallic tweed prints with heavy wools. A new innovational technique will be making an

appearance this season which is laser-cut patterns. Intricate cut out patterns with lush fabrics

are coming into play which makes a great statement. Last but not least, lace is another trend

coming through into fall and winter. Each of these trends represents a very ornate detail that I

think portrays an expensive feel.

Trends change from country to country therefore every runway show is different

depending on where the designer is from. A predominant trend that I have found from Rio is 60’s

Pop and seventies fashion. The 60’s pop pieces are fun bright and modern in shape and form. The

70’s fashion trend incorporated wide legged pants, Bordeaux out colors, and hippy blouses. Next I

Page 18: Fashion Journal 2012

looked at fashion in Mexico. The theme shown throughout was an after school arts and crafts

child like theme. Boxy and cropped shapes contrast with second-skin bottoms and waisted

volume. There were Colorful prints that works the palette alongside splashes of solid red, blue

and yellow. Lastly I took a look at the fashion trends in Peru. There were a few trends such as a

take on modern Sherpa’s, amazing mosaics, and tea time glam. The Sherpa’s showed great knits

and gray toned colors, while the mosaics showed bright colors and prints. The last trend was

beautiful fitted tops with voluminous bubble skirts that really complete the silhouette. It has

flashy prints, feathers, ribbons and bow accents add whimsy and fantasy.

Entry #9- Visual Displays

Zara

Forever21

What I enjoyed most about these displays is that they are clean and fresh looking for the

spring and summer. The first display I looked at was Zara. For this display I enjoyed looking at

simplicity with just lights in the background and the mannequins the focal point of the display. For

the next display I looked at Forever 21. This display had a little bit more going on with pictures and

stripes in the background and the mannequins in front dressed in fun colorful outfits.

Entry #10-Movie/TV Show Trend

A new TV show this year that may bring in a new style trend is GCB. The big Texas personality

comes out in the characters of the show as well as in the fashion. The characters not only have

the big hair but big closets. Each character has impeccable style that is very much covered

because the characters are supposed to play Christians but yet a little revealing enough for the

viewer’s eye to wander. I think the characters silhouettes usually range from fitted dress to

some a line skirts that are always paired with sky high heels. The characters not only have

flawless style in their clothing they have great pieces for their accessories. I think this show will

make a mark because it appeals to both an older and younger audience. The dress is conservative

enough for an older audience and yet stylish enough for a younger audience like college students.

Entry #11-Designer

The designer I chose to look into is Maggie Sottero. She is a bridal/ special occasion

designer and I viewed her Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Her designs would be sold at bridal

stores and boutiques that sell exclusive designer gowns. I love her bridal designs because they

are both innovative and flattering to any woman’s body, She has designs for all different

customers and so many diverse fabrications. My favorite design that is pictured above is this

sweetheart bridal gown with beautiful floral draping all over the skirt. There is a sleek black sash

that cinches in the waist and forms a beautiful shape for the model. Maggie Sottero has a classic

design esthetic with enough creativity for every bride to find her match.

Entry #12- Responsibilities

Fashion Designer – Fashion designers have the job of creating garments

and styles to be produced for retail shops to be sold to the public. The job entails a lot of hard

work and long hours to make the clientele happy. It’s the designer’s job to find out future and

current trends so that they make the right choices and make the stores money. A designer needs

to have strong attention to detail, organization, motivation, and ability to work with other

designers.

Buyer- The job of the fashion buyer is to keep track of daily sales for a store in order to decide

the future trends for the store to make a profit. They are responsible for having the orders

delivered to a space on time and the right season. They need to know their target market and

have a strong communication with the customers. The buyer makes sure their customers are

happy throughout their whole shopping experience.

Product Development Manager- The responsibilities of a product development manager are to

oversee the conceptualization, design, construction, selling and distribution of a manufacturer or

designer's products. They have a responsibility over a specific product or product line. They are

responsible for everything to flow without any bumps in the road. This position needs to be

someone who has experience in how everything runs.

Page 23: Fashion Journal 2012

23

Entry #13- Fashion Don’ts

DON’T wear an animal head on top of your head. Just a fur is one thing, but this animal head hanging off of the models forehead is another. This looks like road kill was thrown on the models head. I think that if a warm fur hat is necessary; go for just a simple shape with no face.

DON’T be too matchy matchy. When you try to pair things with your outfit, do not pick everything in the same color and print. This example has way too much going on that you can hardly see the person underneath all of that. Try to choose two color that you can alternate if you don’t have an eye for accessorizing.

Page 24: Fashion Journal 2012

24

DON’T wear socks with sandals. This look just doesn’t do any outfit good. If it’s warm outside wear sandals, if it’s cold wear socks with sneakers. There is no good reason to wear socks with sandals. It’s just wrong.

DON’T wear a man tube top. It’s neither flattering nor cute. Even if you see it on the runway, it doesn’t mean it’s a hit. This horrible design for men should have been banned because it does no one justice.

Page 25: Fashion Journal 2012

25

Entry #14- Career Opportunities

Assistant Fashion Designer- I think that this job would be a good choice for me because I would

love to find a job designing garments. I know that after graduating you need to gain some

experience therefore working as an assistant you get the best of both worlds.

Print Designer- Being a print designer is an opportunity to continue designing while working with

fabrics. I would love the opportunity to create a fabric and see designers create something with

the fabric even if it’s only for a blanket or tablecloth.

Fashion Stylist- Styling has always been something I have enjoyed and have actually done some

work in. Being a stylist for me let me enjoy other designers fashion as well as accessories. This

job would give me the opportunity to branch out and meet people in the fashion industry to grow.
