CONTOUR FASHION BA (Hons)

Contour Fashion BA (Hons) at DMU is an internationally renowned course dedicated to the design of intimate apparel. You can specialise in lingerie, athleisure, swimwear, loungewear, nightwear, corsetry and menswear.Established in 1947 by the British corset industry, Contour Fashion at DMU is the world’s oldest Contour Fashion course that continues to produce graduates who are specialist designers and technical experts with defined skills in design, grading, fit methodologies, manufacture pattern cutting and technical and aesthetic excellence, for industry roles both in the UK and worldwide.

You will develop your personal and professional skills, preparing you for a career in the industry. There will be opportunities to work with ‘live’ projects, benefit from visiting professionals, opt for a placement year (including international experiences) and take part in competitions to develop the skills and knowledge you will need in your career.

Our students have won the Boux Avenue’s Lingerie Designer of the Year and Swimwear Award at Graduate Fashion Week. Student successes also include Worshipful Company of Leathersellers Award, Trumph Design Award, and working in collaboration with ASOS and Gymshark.

Recent graduates have taken up many international job opportunities including Calvin Klein, Heidi Klein, H&M, Clover Hong Kong, Bravissimo, Stretchline and Harvey Nichols.

Contour Fashion (Communication) BA (Hons) at DMU is a diverse and multi-disciplined course offering career opportunities in marketing, promotion, trend forecasting, product development and entrepreneurship, within the intimate apparel industry.This course has been designed to meet the changing requirements of the industry and the course is centred on the need to develop graduates with a wider skill set that encompasses digital marketing strategies.

You will study aspects of concept inspiration, idea development, image, trend, styling, enterprise and business, industry and communication skills, social media applications and marketing.

You will benefit from our extensive industry links and have the opportunity to work with companies on live projects and competitions. The course also has an optional placement year, offering opportunities for work here in the UK, or overseas, as part of your studies.

The course team are highly experienced intimate apparel professionals and have worked with well-known brands within the industry. Teaching and learning is further enhanced with guest lectures by industry professionals.

Fashion Buying with Design/Product Development BA (Hons) at DMU have been created to meet the needs of a highly dynamic and fast-moving sector. You will focus on product design, range planning and trends.Covering womenswear, childrenswear and menswear, you will develop excellent knowledge of the design and product development process of fashion buying, developing key skills and strategies to take a design from concept to the commercial market.

You will follow the design route in year one, and then go on to specialise in Design or Product Development in years two and three. At the end of year two, there is an optional placement year where students can work in industry and practice what they have learnt, as well and gain a more in-depth and hands-on experience. Previous placements included F&F, Timberland, Matalan, O’Neill and the British Fashion Council.

Recent graduates have succeeded into careers at ASOS, Selfridges, Next, George, M&S, River Island, and Joules amongst many others.

FASHION COMMUNICATION AND STYLING BA (Hons)

Fashion Communication and Styling BA (Hons) at DMU, is a highly creative and practical programme that will teach you how to think like a fashion stylist and communicator by using new technologies and promotional platforms. As part of the fast-paced and dynamic world of fashion, the fashion stylist and communicator manipulates visual stories. They engage with audiences, telling style stories to transform fashion products from just objects into modern must-have trends.

As part of the course you will learn the technical production of image, film, event styling and production. You are encouraged to work collaboratively with both peers and various sectors of the industry to develop team-working skills and grow your network of future career opportunities.

You will also work as an individual and collaboratively. These collaborations and consultations will be with a range of audiences including peers, event organisations, fashion media and fashion brands. Each new project and collaboration promotes your skills and abilities but also builds your network of future potential employers, clients and fashion business connections.

FASHION DESIGN BA (Hons)

Fashion Design BA (Hons) at DMU is creative and dynamic, allowing you to experience and understand the constant flux and evolution of the fashion industry. We create graduate designers who can bridge the boundaries between creativity, technology and design innovation.The course offers you the opportunity to specialise in menswear, womenswear and/or fashion knitwear. Our students have the opportunity to enter national and international competitions, and respond to industry set briefs from companies and organisations such as the British Fashion Council, the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry and Diversity.

This course will develop your fashion and design skills through practical and creative classes, and design based projects that encourage you to experiment. You will look at the relationship between design and technology and develop new skills such as tailoring and fashion prediction.

Our students have won many prestigious awards and accolades. They have enjoyed international opportunities such as the Gap internship programme where students attend an eight-week paid internship in New York. Students have also showcased their graduate collections as part of Shanghai Fashion Week, and the GREAT campaigns in China and Hong Kong.

After you graduate your portfolio will illustrate your ability to communicate visually and show a range of diverse skills in both fashion and textiles. Our recent graduates have gained employment at Erdem, Sophie Hulme, Burberry, Next, River Island and Superdry.

FASHION MANAGEMENT (LEVEL 6 TOP-UP) BA (Hons)

Fashion Management top-up BA (Hons) at DMU is a one year programme to prepare students to study contemporary issues in a range of fashion management related subjects, where you will learn the key skills needed to pursue a career in this dynamic and exciting industry.You will learn the key elements of the fashion business and management, including an in-depth study of the buying process, product innovation, intellectual property law and business planning and entrepreneurship. You will examine contemporary issues within the global fashion market place including consumer behaviour, ethical and environmental issues and online and off-line fashion promotion. You will conduct a major research project which you tailor to your particular area of interest such as Marketing, Management, Buying, Trend, or many more.

Students have the opportunity to gain two degrees in two years by enrolling on to the Fashion Management top-up programme and upon completion, then enrolling onto the Fashion Management with Marketing MA programme.

The degree offers a holistic understanding of the fashion management, marketing and retail sectors and prepares students for an exciting career within these industries. The MA is designed to further embed learning and explore these subjects in an ever greater depth. Our fashion graduates have gone on to work for global fashion retailers such as Urban Outfitters, Next, Selfridges, O’Neill, River Island and many more.

FASHION TEXTILE DESIGN BA (Hons)

Fashion Textile Design BA (Hons) at DMU is a versatile and creative course providing opportunities for you to develop in-depth textile design expertise for the fashion industry.We aim to produce resourceful fashion specialists through the course’s philosophy of exploring and combining a broad range of practical skills. This allows investigation of materials and technical approaches across print, stitch, embellishment and knit, as well as developing complementary skills in CAD, design communication, and 3D product realisation.

A strong emphasis is placed on nurturing research, conceptual, creative and technical skills, coupled with the development of essential fashion skills such as pattern cutting, construction and fashion illustration. We aim to encourage you to become knowledgeable in a broad fashion context, while honing your specialist textile design skills.

Graduates go on to a wide variety of careers in the fashion industry and beyond, including fabric sourcing for Vivienne Westwood, materials designer at Jaguar, design studio work at Acorn Conceptual Textiles, or open their own boutiques.

FOOTWEAR DESIGN BA (Hons)

Footwear Design BA (Hons) at DMU has a rich heritage that started at the end of the 19th century in footwear design and manufacture, leading to the contemporary footwear course we know today. The course covers the complex shoe design process, and will enable you to acquire the knowledge and skills that set you apart from others in the fashion sector. You will benefit from strong industry links and have the opportunity to work directly with design professionals and notable brands, allowing insight into advanced product briefings and new technologies.

The course is designed to lead to successful careers in footwear design, buying and marketing, and teaches practical skills and shoemaking expertise for production and technical areas of the footwear industry. Graduates are working as designers, buyers or agents for companies such as Gucci, New Balance, L.K.Bennett, Dr. Martens, Irregular Choice, Lacoste, Kickers, Kurt Geiger, Adidas, Dune, Levi’s, Office, Next and Georgina Goodman both in the UK and overseas.

TEXTILE DESIGN BA (Hons)

Textile Design BA (Hons) at DMU will provide you with the opportunity to specialise in one of four areas of textile design: mixed media, print, knit and weave. You will explore creative and ambitious design solutions, innovative visual research, and develop strong design skills for a career in textiles for fashion, interior or lifestyle.The techniques taught ensure you explore a variety of disciplines, styles and employment options. They include fabric manipulation, hand and machine stitch, digital imaging and printing, digital embroidery, jacquard weaving and knitting, screen printing, and weave and textile dyeing. This is a contemporary and exciting course, where you will benefit from links with industry through live commercial projects, and participate in national and international competitions and work placements.

This course leads to successful careers such as freelance designer, designers for industry, buying and production, gallery exhibitor, private and public commission work, demonstrator, stylists, gallery and retail opportunities and teaching. Our recent graduates work for a broad range of companies such as Aston Martin, Timberland, George at Asda, Jigsaw, Primark, Osborne & Little and Warner Fabrics.

Contour Fashion showThe Contour Fashion show is an opportunity for our students to showcase their final collections to a wide range of influential industry and media professionals in central London. Each year, brands representing the contour industry – including lingerie, swimwear, leisurewear and textiles companies sponsor the event and it has become a must see for forecasters of future trends and talent spotters.

Graduate Fashion Week Graduate Fashion Week is known for launching the careers of some of the biggest names in fashion including Stella McCartney and Julien Macdonald. New DesignersNew Designers is a central London event, showcasing the best UK graduates from Fashion, Textiles and Accessories. Graduates gain access to industry speakers, portfolio clinics and exhibit their work to a broad industry audience, gaining employment opportunities, internships, awards and professional advice on developing their fledgling careers.

MODAYou will have the opportunity to enter competitions and showcase your work through MODA, the British lingerie and swimwear event, which regularly plays host to more than 1,450 brands covering womenswear, menswear, footwear, lingerie, swimwear and accessories. Our previous winners include Maya Nishimura who won the coveted footwear History in the Making Award for her design inspired by Japanese culture.

Art and Design Degree ShowOur Art and Design Degree Show celebrates the talent and innovative work of our final year art and design students. The exhibition showcases exciting creations by the next generation of artists and designers across many of our courses, and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country, including potential employers.

AWARDS AND SUCCESSES

Nan-Young KimFashion Textiles and Accessories BA (Hons) The Leathersellers’ Company Designer of the Year award

Nan-Young’s collection of fashion bags inspired by a 1973 French animation called Fantastic Planet, earned her The Leathersellers’ Company Designer of the Year award. Nan-Young’s designs combine different materials and colours with curved lines and 3D-printed miniature human forms to create something that is ‘conceptually grotesque but visually pleasing’.

Paige DoranTextile Design BA (Hons)

At DMU’s Art and Design Degree Show, Paige Doran was awarded the Christopherson Collection Prize and the Sydeny Marcus Roadley Award for her achievements in Textile Design.

Maisie BeeFashion Buying with Marketing BA (Hons)

Maisie secured a year-long placement with fashion and home retailer Next. She worked in their online department and explored areas of online marketing and creative design. She assisted with the managing and production of website content, supported online trading managers, produced weekly children’s clothing emails and selected key images for the website.

Tara DicksonFashion Design BA (Hons)

During her time at DMU, Tara completed a placement year which saw her working for Hugo Boss in Germany and high-end fashion label Peter Pilotto in London. These experiences helped teach her the skills she needed to impress and win the £2500 bursary from The Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters. She was shortlisted for the Tessuti Sportswear and Leisurewear Award at Graduate Fashion Week and has since secured a six month menswear/knit placement with Givenchy in Paris.

Dimitri GabellierFootwear Design BA (Hons) YKK Accessories Award winner and Cordwainer’s Footwear Student of the Year 2nd place at Graduate Fashion Week

Footwear Design graduate Dimitri Gabellier impressed at Graduate Fashion Week with his incredible sports shoe design which was inspired by the Hojojutsu, the traditional Japanese martial art of restraining a person using cord or rope. His amazing work at Graduate Fashion Week and beyond secured him a placement with luxury fashion house Givenchy.

Sian HickeyContour Fashion BA (Hons)

Sian’s innovative lingerie collection that was both environmentally friendly and period-proof gained international media attention after being debuted at the annual DMU Contour Fashion Catwalk Show in London.
