SPRING 2009 SHARING PARTNERSHIP AND CAMPUS NEWS WITH FANSHAWE COLLEGE DONORS HILTI (CANADA) supports School of Building Technology with innovative new tooling S IN THIS ISSUE Students in the electrical and mechanical installation trades are now equipped to enter the workforce with experience on innovative new tools from Hilti (Canada). On March 30, 2009, Hilti (Canada) Corporation donated new Hilti technology to Fanshawe College and demonstrated the tools to Fanshawe faculty and staff. One of the new products is an automatic gas-powered tool for the mechanical and electrical trades to fasten conduit, pipe or cables to steel, concrete or concrete block. e generous donation also includes a medium duty demolition tool for the removal of concrete and concrete block, with self-sharpening chisels and innovative screw, drilling and hammer drilling Lithium Ion cordless tools. e company offers additional training to students enrolled in the programs involved. With industry technology continually changing, the partnership with Hilti (Canada) helps Fanshawe meet its tooling needs. e entire Hilti (Canada) team received a warm welcome and thanks from the Faculty of Technology and the Fanshawe College Foundation. A major donation from London Hydro will help fund applied research on a new project that may produce a greener, more efficient power grid. Students in several programs will work with Fanshawe faculty and London Hydro engineers to investigate ways to make solar power a more accessible energy option. “London Hydro has proudly supported Fanshawe College for many years,” said Mohan Mathur, Vice-Chair of London Hydro’s Board of Directors and Chair of the Mayor’s Sustainable Energy Council (MSEC). “is is an important research initiative for us, and we saw in Fanshawe the perfect partner to help us investigate some of the big questions we need to answer about solar energy. We look forward to seeing the results that this project will produce.” With applied research identified as a key Strategic Direction for the College, the London Hydro project gives Fanshawe another opportunity to meet relevant challenges through research. e new project’s cutting edge technology will test theories on how solar energy can be used to relieve pressure on the power grid during periods of peak demand. “It will be a great learning experience for our students, as well as an intriguing project for our faculty. Th e City of London’s Greenway Pollution Control Centre (PCC) Laboratory is supporting the Environmental Technology program at Fanshawe through the donation of three laboratory instruments used for wastewater testing.

With hands-on experience on equipmenttypically used in government and commercial laboratories for large scale water quality testing, students now have access to lab experiments whichanalyze water samples for a range of chemical contaminants.

Th rough the computer software program that controls the instrumentation, students can see how the various systemsare controlled and interact with each other. For unknown contaminantsin samples, students will be able toprovide identifi cation and determine thechemical structure as well as calculatethe concentrations. Th ese are all important tasks performed in a modern, automated chemical testing laboratory.

As well as benefi tting students in the Environmental Technology program, the instruments can be used for foodand biological samples to benefi t

students in the Science Laboratory and Biotechnology programs.

Greenway Pollution Control CentreLaboratory representatives Tony Van Rossum and Grace Aye toured the Fanshawe Lab on April 3. The Heavy Duty Distributor Council and Shell Canada have teamed up to recognizeoutstanding heavy duty technician studentsthrough a Canada-wide scholarship program.

With an economy that is heavily dependent on trucking, the future of the transport industry will require that students begin their careers with sound knowledge of the maintenance of complex vehicles.Shell Canada Products and the Heavy Duty Distributor Council (HDDC) were pleased recently to announce the winners of the 2009 Heavy Duty Technician Scholarship which included Fanshawe student Julianne Bouwhuis as the Ontario winner.

Rob Gorrie, Chair of the School of Motive Power Technology, commended the scholarship initiative saying that “Th ere is real opportunity for students to further educate themselves within the motive power trades with the help of industry leaders.”

Students enrolled full-time and in their last year in a program or an apprenticeship relating to the fi eld of heavy duty equipment, focusing on road transport, are eligibleto apply for the Heavy Duty Technician Scholarship.

Five students from across Canada were awarded a scholarship valued at $2,000. Scholarships wereawarded based on the applicant’s academic merit,fi nancial need, and commitment to contributing to the future success of the trucking industry.
