Managing a career in hotel management

When General Manager Randy Zupanski looks out from the newly opened Fairmont Pacific Rim in Vancouver, BC, he has a chance to reflect on a career path that took him across the globe and back again. The trip from Fanshawe student in the early 80s to a top level industry strategist in 2010 is one that he wouldn’t have missed for the world.

Randy Zupanski(Hotel and Restaurant Management ‘82)hasspentmorethan30yearsinthehospitalityindustryandthelasttwoyearsoverseeingconstructionintheheartofVancouver.Underhiswatchfuleye,theFairmontPacificRimhotelopenedinFebruary2010.

Perchedontheedgeoftheocean,this377-roomluxuryhotelprovidesspectacularviewsofStanleyPark,theBurrardInlet,theNorthShoreMountains,andthecityofVancouver.AsGeneralManager,Randycouldbarelycontainhisenthusiasmwhenhe,andhisnewlymintedandwelltrainedteamof350,openedthehoteljustintimetowelcometheworldtoVancouverfortheOlympicGames.

“Theexcitementinthecitywaselectricandafteryearsofplanning,wewerereadytocelebrate,”saysRandy,whostillthrillstoanewopening,eventhoughhehasdonethismanytimesbeforeinhiscareer.“Ourstaffandservicepartnersmadeourfirsttwomonthsanamazingsuccessandwearecontinuingtowelcomeguestsfromsomanydifferentcountriesandcultures.”

Nostrangertoworld-classcustomerservice,Randyhasheldleadershiprolesatmorethan15different

propertiesacrossNorthAmerica,inHongKongandinShanghai,China.Itwasastrategicmovethathemadeearlyinhiscareerthatsetthestageforsuccessstartingatarelativelyyoungage.

“WhenIgraduatedFanshawe,IwentstraighttoTorontoandtookajobwiththeWestinHotelstartingoutasaBarSupervisor,”recallsRandy.“Evenfromthestart,mygoalwastobeahotelgeneralmanager,butafteronlyashorttime,Icouldseemyoptionswithinabigchainwerelimited.ItwouldtakeforevertogetonaleadershiptracksincethemanagementtraineesatthattimewereprettywellallcomingfromlargeAmericanprogramssuchastheSchoolofHotelAdministrationatCornellUniversity.

“Theindustryhaschangednow;collegediplomasarewell-regarded,especiallyfromFanshawe’shospitalityprogram,butwhenIstartedout,Ijustcouldn’tprovemyselfquickenoughformytaste,”explainsRandy.

SoRandylookedaroundandthoughthecouldgainquickerandmorewellroundedexperienceworkingforasmallerindustryplayer.HechoseKanataHotels,acompanythatfocusedondoingmanagementchangeovers.Basically,theytook


overproperties,renovatedthem,andrepositionedthem.

HesoonfoundthatwithinthesmallerKanatacompany,hewasabletogainupperlevelmanagementexperienceatamuchyoungerageandwithmoreintensity.“Withinjustafewyears,Igainedexposuretoeveryareaofthehotelbusinesswhereasatalargerchain,Iwouldhaveonlygainedexperienceonedepartmentatatime,”saysRandy.

Itwasgettingexposuretothoseleadershipactivitiesandbeinghands-onwithprojectsatalllevelsofthepropertiesthatallowedhimtobecomeageneralmanagerforthefirsttimeatage28.

“TherealitywasthatImovedmorequicklythanmaybeIevenshouldhavebutIaccomplishedmygoalonmyownterms,”saysRandy.“Itookthepathlesstraveledandsincethen,I’vetraveledandworkedinsomeprettyspectacularmarkets.”

WhilehisfirststintsasGMwereinsmallerhotels,hemovedfromKanataHotelstoCaraOperationsLimitedin1989tobuildonhisskillsandportfolio.

“AttheDaysInnattheTorontoAirport,Iledahighlysuccessfulconversion,renovationandreorganization,boostingoccupancyandleadingourcompetition,”saysRandy.ThatledtoasimilarleadershiproleattheDeltaTorontoAirportHotel

andthatopenedthedoortoanoffertogotoHongKong.

“ThiswasastrategicmoveformeandabitriskyinthatitinvolvedmovingbothmyselfandmyyoungfamilyoverseassoIcouldtakeontheroleofResidentManageroftheRegalAirportHotelinHongKong,”saysRandy,whofeelsveryfortunatethathiswife,MaryEllen,andtheirtwindaughters,CourtneyandMorgan,havesupportedhimeverystepoftheway.

Itwasaleapoffaithbecausethatpositionwasmorefocusedinoperationsanditcouldhavebeenseenasastepdownfromhispreviousroles,buthetookitbecausehereallywantedtogainexperienceinhigh-endluxuryhotels.Itworked.

Randylearnedboththecultureandthenuancesofhigh-endcustomerservicewithinthatinternationalsettingandfromdealingwithclientelefromallovertheworld.Fromthere,hewasofferedandtookonthechallengeofGMinchargeofthehotelopeningoftheRegalShanghaiEastAsiaHotelinShanghai,China.

Whileoverseas,MaryEllenandthegirlsalsolearnedsomuch.Whiletheadjustmentstoanewplacealwaystaketime,hiswifeenjoyedthevariousmovesandlearnedtobeflexibleandopenwhenmeetingnewpeopleandlearninganewculture.

“Insomecountries,likeHongKong,Icouldworkandthatwasgreat,”remembersMaryEllen.“Wetooktripstoothercountrieswiththegirlsandasaresultofourtravels,thetwinshavegrownuptobeflexible,acceptingandopentonewchallengesintheirlivesaswell.”

Afterfiveyearsoverseas,Randy,MaryEllenandthegirlsmovedbacktoCanada,sohecouldacceptachallengingroleattheSheratonSuitesCalgaryEauClaire.From1998to2005,Randyledthemthroughtheopening,operationandpositioningofthenewhotel,toapointwheretheyweresettingthemarketstandardandwinningprestigiousawardsyearafteryear.

“IlovedthatpropertyandwehadafantastictimeinCalgary.Itwasoneofthehardestplacesweeverhadtoleave,”remembersRandy,butthelureofpalmtrees,warmsunshineandtheCalifornialife-stylewascallingthem.

RandyspentthenextthreeyearsoverseeingthetransitionoftheSuttonPlace,renovatingittothetuneof$35million,andre-brandingitastheFairmontNewportBeach.“Thatwasa444-roomluxurypropertywith15functionroomsandalltheamenitiesyoucouldwant,”saysRandy“Itwasadreamtorenovateandrepositionthatgreatproperty.Imustsay,weenjoyedtheCaliforniasunshinealongtheway.Theoceanbreezesandthefishing–itwasglorious.”

Whenhewrappedupthatchallenge,theymovedbacktoCanadainMay2008tobeginplansfortheambitiousFairmontPacificRimbuildandtheFebruary2010openingthathejustmaneuvered.

I never had an issue with the moving

Fairmont Pacific Rim: Count down to opening day

TheopeningoftheFairmontPacificRimwentrighttothewire.Usuallyhotelshavea“softopening”firstwherebythehotelopenswithlimitedguestroominventoryandlimitedfoodandbeverage.Colleagueshavethechancetogetusedtothebuilding,systemsandprocedures,andthereistimefortroubleshootingandadjustmentsbeforeafullguestcomplementarrives.

ButattheFairmontPacificRim,itcamedowntothelast14daysandtherewerestillbasicallysixweeksofworktocomplete.Itwasahugechallengebuttheyworkedaroundtheclocktomakethedeadline.Thefirstguests-30ofthem-arrivedonFebruary5andthehotelwasatfulloccupancysixdayslater.

“Therewasalotatrisk.Weknewthatguestswerearrivingforaneventofalifetimeandwewantedtoensurethatitwasapositiveexperience,”saysRandy.“TheguestswewereexpectingwereallVIPs.Atanyothertime,theywouldeachhavehadtheredcarpettreatmentandherewewereexpectingafullhouseofthemandallatthesametime.”

Thelogisticsandplanningwerekey.“Addingtoourchallengewasthefactthatthedowntownareawassecure,duetotheOlympics,somanyofourlast-minutedeliveriescouldonlytakeplaceaftermidnight,”explainsRandy.“ThenwehadawarehouseinNorthVancouverhousingover$5millionofgoods,andwhenouroccupancywasdelayed,wewereabletopackitemsthatwererequiredforeachroom,sothattheyweresimplydroppedinandsetup.Itsavedanenormousamountoftime.

“AnotherreasonwewereabletohitthegroundrunningwasthehighlyskilledFairmonttransitionteamwhoaremastersatopenings.Wealsobroughtinemployeesfromacrossthechainwhowerebilletedwithourcolleagues.ORU,ourdiningroom,wasthelasttoopenandArnoldSchwarzeneggerandhiswifeMariaShriverwereamongthefirstguests.Theycameinforbreakfastafterheraninthetorchrelay,butIdon’tthinktheyrealizedwehadjustopened.Evennow,guestsaresurprisedwhenwetellthemthatwejustopened–theycan’tbelieveit.”

Inhiscurrentrole,Randysayshewearsanumberofhats.“Ageneralmanagerisinchargeofmakingthewholeoperationsuccessful.Wearethestrategicplannerforthebusiness;wearethecoach;wearegeneralistsinourfield,”heexplains.

“Really,anylargeluxuryhotelismadeupofanumberofdifferentbusinesses–restaurants,lounge,spa,fitnesscentre,businesscentre,giftshop,eventrooms,andsoon.SoIdealwithanumberofdifferentprofessionalsinallthoseareas.Idon’thavetobeanexpertoneverything,butIdohavetoknowenoughaboutalloftheminordertocoachandhelpthemmanagethosepartsofthebusiness,tomeettheoverallstrategicgoalsofthepropertyitself.”

Thisisdonethroughone-on-onemeetingsandthroughthesettingofhotel-widegoalsandstrategiesthatalldepartmentstieinto.Successismonitoredintermsof

guestsatisfactionratings,employeeengagement,andanumberofothermeasurements.

Asforthefuture,Randyisnotsurewherethewindsofchangemighttakehimnext.Hisdaughtersarenow20andstudyingtowardscareersoftheirown.

“Icouldseeusmaybegoinginternationalagain…whoknows?”saysRandy.“Ineverhadanissuewiththemovingaround.Ithoughtitwasexcitinganditwasoneoftheaspectsofthebusinessthatdrewmetothiscareer.

“Evenafter30years,IlovewhatIdo.Igetagreatdealofsatisfactionfromit,”saysRandy.“Thisissuchadiversebusinesstobein–withsomanybusinessunitsunderoneroof–it’squiteuniquethatway.We’veonlyjuststartedtoestablishthisnewpresenceinVancouver,sothisismycurrentfocusandoneI’mhappytostickwith.”


WhenIlookatmycareerandmylife,alotofwhatIhaveaccomplishedhastodowithtakinginitiative,beingaleader,andinspiringteamsthatwork.EveninmyfirstjobworkingforCanada’slargestvideoduplicationhouse,VTRVideoinToronto,Iwasdeterminedtogetahead.Afteronlysixyearswiththem,IwasDirectorofProduction,responsibleformorethan150peopleinacomplexandgrowingmanufacturingoperation,beingbothaleaderandamentortoemergingleadersaroundme.

Fromthere,IwentontomanagelargeproductionfacilitiesinCanada,theUSandtheUK,combiningstrategicvisionwitheffectiveactionimplementation.Inalogicalprogression,Ico-foundedQualityWorks,Inc.,aCaliforniaconsultingcompany,whereIspecializedinimplementingbestpracticesininnovativemanagementmethodsacrosstheUS.Istilltravelandcompletecontractseachyearasaconsultantinthisareaofexpertise.

However,forthepast12years,Ihavehadthedelightofraisingmyyoungdaughter.Sheinspiredmetostartasecondcareerpathinaglobalhome-basedscrapbookingbusinesscalledCreativeMemories(CM).SinceItakealotofphotographsasaMom,IwasdrawntoCMbecausetheybelieveincelebratinglifethroughphotographsandstories–showingpeoplehowtoputtheirphotostogetherinalbumswithcaptions–sothememorieswilllastforcominggenerations.

In September 2009, Heather helped host a Creative Memories event at the London Convention Centre that saw 250 people working on their photo albums together for 12 happy and productive hours –

and it served as a fundraising event for Make-a-Wish Foundation too!

Balancing career and family is difficult enough, but Heather Weaver balances her family with two careers and makes incredible memories while doing it. Here’s how she does it – in her own words!

Making a career full of Creative Memories

MycurrentrolewithCreativeMemoriesisasaSeniorUnitLeaderandIamenjoyingeveryminuteofit.IamusingthecreativityandleadershipskillsIgainedatFanshaweandmybusinessexperiencetomakeithappen.Ishowothershowtheycanbecomehappilyself-employedwithCMandinthepastfiveyears,Ihavebuiltateamofmorethan35independentconsultants.Iearnawards,incentivesandfreetrips–mostrecentlytoDublin,Ireland–whichwasfabulous.

ButthebestthingaboutCMisthatIcanbalancemyfamilyandcareerinasustainableandhappyway.Iamthrilledwhencustomerstellmehowscrapbookinghasmadeatremendousdifferenceintheirlife.Itistherapeuticwhentimesaretoughtorelivespecialmemoriesfoundinphotographs.Customersalsolovetosocializewithotherpeoplewhoscrapbook.Plusourdigitalscrapbooksoftwareisabsolutelyincredibletooandidealforpeoplewhosephotosonlyexistontheircomputer.

In 2008, Mark Luciani of Tillsonburg knew he had to make a change. As a 39-year-old single father about to be laid off from his job in a bad economy, he faced an uncertain future. Then something unexpected happened.

MarkLucianihadalwaysdreamedofbecomingapoliceofficer,butdidn’thavetheeducationtomakethatdreamcometrue,untilanunexpectedbitofnewscamehisway.

“Iheardfromafriendthattherewasaone-yearPoliceFoundationsprogrambeingofferedatFanshaweCollege’sWoodstockcampusforthefirsttime,”Markremembers.“OnceIlookedintoit,Iknewthetimingwasrighttogobacktoschool.”

Afterquiteaprocessandalongyear,inOctober2009,MarkgraduatedfromPoliceFoundationsinWoodstock.Heimmediatelyputhisnameintomovethroughthehiringprocesswithalocalpoliceforce.

Atgraduation,headmittedthepastyearhadnotbeenaneasyone.Whilehesharescustodyofhistwoyoungchildren,theyarewithhimalotofthetime.Healsohadtoworkextrahardtocomeupwithfundingthroughprovincialprogramsandbursaries.Evenwithfundingfinallysecured,hestillhadtofindextratimetodothecoursework.

“IstudiedwhenIwasinschool,andwhenmykidswereinschoolorinbed,”Marksays.“SomenightsIwouldonlybeabletomanagethreeorfourhoursofsleep.Ineededtoattainstronggrades,butalsospendtimewithmykids.ItwasabalanceIknewIhadtoachieve,becausefailurewasnotanoptionforme.Iwastoldbyapolicerecruiterthatmygradeswouldmatter,andItookthatadviceveryseriously.”

Markdidmorethanjustgetgoodgrades.HemadetheDean’sHonourRollandalsogotinvolvedasStudentCouncilPresident.Throughitall,hiskidsgavehimtheinspirationtokeepgoing.

“EverytimeIgotagoodgradeonanassignmentIwasmotivatedtodomore,”hesays.“EverytimeIwasdiscouraged,IwouldhearmykidsaskifIwasapolicemanyetanditwouldmotivatemetoworkevenharder.”

Markwasoneofmorethan300graduatesfromtheWoodstockcampusin2009.Heencouragesotherpeoplelikehim–adultswhohavebeenoutofschoolforyears–togoforit.AsMarksays:“Youcanbesuccessfultooifyoustaypositive,workhard,andarecourageousenoughtotakeonthechallenge.”

Fromenvironmentalprioritiestoeconomicrealitiestoethicalconcerns,thegrowingfieldofbiotechnologyismakingabigimpactonourlivesandourfutures.Drivenbytheneedexpressedbyindustryformoreprofessionalstoenterthisfield,FanshawedevelopedaBachelorofAppliedTechnologydegreeinBiotechnologyandlauncheditin2005.

“Therewasaneedforpeoplewithadvancedskillstofillroleswithinbiotechnologybusinesses,researchinstitutesandtoworkwithscientists,”saysCherylKetola,professorandcoordinatorofthebiotechnologyprogramatFanshaweCollege.“Whileuniversitiesofferbiotechnologyasafieldofstudy,thisapplieddegreeinbiotechnologyatFanshaweistheonlyoneofitskindinOntario.”

ThefirstFanshawegraduatescompletedtheirdegreesinJune2009andarenowestablishingcareersinthefield.Theyenteredthejobmarketwithnotonlytheoreticalknowledgebutalsopracticalskills.Alongwitheightacademiclevelsofstudy,studentsparticipatedinamandatoryfour-monthco-operativeworkplacementandsomechosetotakeanadditionalfourmonthco-operativeworkoption.

Withintheprogram,coursesincludebiotechnology,genetics,bioinformatics,

molecularbiology,microbiology,virology,andpharmacologyandtoxicology.Theyalsoexplorerelatedsocietal,economic,ethical,legal,andenvironmentalissues.Throughclassesandlabs,studentsdevelopskillsinexperimentaldesign,statisticaldataanalysis,andthehandlingofmicrobial,plant,andanimalgeneticmaterialandproteins.

Inthisway,Fanshaweispreparingstudentsforopportunitiesinmedicine,pharmaceuticals,nutraceuticals,researchanddevelopment,qualityandregulatorysettings,andtechnicalsalessupport.Infact,someofthesejobsaresonewanddiverse,theyareonlyjustnowbeingdefinedandfilled.

“Thebiotechnologyindustryissomuchmorethanjustthedrugdevelopmentindustry,”explainsLeeSmithsonwhoisGeneralManagerofTheStillerCentreforTechnologyCommercializationinLondon,Ontario.“Whilethatisstillthemostrecognizableindustrialsectorwhichemploysbiotechnologyworkers,othersectorsareincreasinglyturningtothesewell-trainedknowledgeexpertswhoareadeptinsomanyapplications.”

When students complete the four-year applied degree program in biotechnology at Fanshawe, they are confident in taking ideas from a lab stage to the marketplace. They are stepping into career-building positions within this expanding field and already making their mark.

Biotechnology grads give the industry a boost


expertisebeinginvested.“TheapplieddegreeprograminbiotechnologyatFanshawedeliversskilledgraduateswiththeproblem-solving,results-orientedapproachesthatarehighlyvaluedbycompaniesinthesediversesectors,”saysLeeSmithson.“Theyneedgoodpeopletobeabletocompeteinglobalmarketsandtoensuretheycancapturethemarketshareneededtobesuccessful.”

CurrentlyinLondon,itisestimatedthatabout2,000peopleworkinthebiotechsector,accordingtoStatisticsCanada.Withinweeksoftheprogram,theFanshawegraduateshadjoinedthatpoollastJunebylandingjobsorplanningtocontinueuniversitystudies.

Oneofthem,ChristinaKeller,chosetogototheUniversityofCalgary,wheresheenteredtheMaster’sprograminBiomedicalTechnologyinSeptember.Christinawasthrilledtobeacceptedtotheuniversityandtofindoutthatshewasoneofeightpeopletoalsobenominatedforafullscholarship.

Jennifer Dawe(Applied Technology-Biotechnology ’09)istheManageroftheConvergenceLaboratoryatTheStillerCentreforTechnologyCommercialization.

“My job is to manage the Convergence Lab and oversee the day-to-day laboratory activities, including the smooth operation of essential scientific equipment and laboratory automation. What is biotechnology?

Biotechnologyistheuseofmicroorganisms,suchasbacteriaoryeasts,orbiologicalsubstances,suchasenzymes,toperformspecificindustrialormanufacturingprocesses.Biotechnologyhasapplicationsinfourmajorindustrialareas:healthcareandmedical;cropproductionandagriculture;non-foodindustrialusesofcropsandotherproducts(suchasbiodegradableplastics,vegetableoil,andbiofuels);andenvironmentaluses.

David Andrew (Andy) Prince(Applied Technology-Biotechnology ’09)workswithtwoPh.D.researchersinaresearchlabwhichishousedatTheStillerCentreforTechnologyCommercialization.

“I completed my co-op work placement at Stiller and made some great connections. Since graduation, I have been working as a biochemical engineer under the supervision of two researchers on industrial applications of new biotechnologies that are intended for the marketplace. It is an exciting place to be and it is exactly what I was hoping to be doing.”

Lauren Burdick (Applied Technology-Biotechnology ’09)worksattheMSGeneticsLab(MultipleSclerosis)atLondonHealthSciencesCentreinLondon,Ontario.

“I had two really interesting co-op work placements – one was working in bioinformatics in a lab at UWO and the other was doing analysis of the chemical components of a food product – wild-flower honey. My current position is a contract one with the Canadian Collaborative Research Project on MS. I like that this role is in the research field. Coming out of the program, I felt very well prepared.”

Nadjib Faci (Applied Technology-Biotechnology ’09)hassecuredafull-timejobasalabtechniciantestingrawmaterialsandfinishedproductswithinamanufacturingsetting.

“During the program, I gained invaluable co-op work experience at a microbiology lab within the beverage industry in Montreal. It was a tremendous learning experience since I got to apply so much of what I learned at Fanshawe to the practical work of the day. I’m enjoying my current job very much, being able to put my skills to work.”


WhenSteven Southgate (Interior Design 95)graduatedfromFanshaweCollege,hesetouttoclimbthedecidedlychicladderoftheinteriordesignworld.OriginallyfromWoodstock,Ontario,hemovedtoTorontoandnotlongafter,landedthegigofalifetimeonDivine Design with Candice Olson,adecoratingshowhostedbyCanadiandesignguruCandiceOlson.TheshowwrappeditslastepisodeinFebruary2010,aftereightgreatyearsthatSteventhoroughlyenjoyed.

Duringitsrun,theshowwasbroadcastacrossCanadaonWNetworkandreachedanother80millionhomesonHGTV-US,burninguptheNorthAmericanairwaves,bringinggreatdesigntothemasses.StevenservedasDesignSupervisorformostofthatrun,butittooksomefortunatetimingandalotoftalenttolandhimsuchacovetedspot.

HisfirstjobwasatalocalLondonfurnituredesignstorebutwhenthestoreclosed,hedecidedtoheadtoTorontotowavehismagicdecoratingwandovertheunsightly,outdatedandunwelcoming.Atfirstheworkedataninteriordesignstore,andthenasajuniordesigneralongsideanestablishedinteriordesigner.

LandingaTVgigwasnotsomethinghehadeventhoughtofuntilaproductioncompanyannounceditwaslookingforafewsavvydesigners.SteveninitiallypitchedhisresumeforanothershowthatwasbeingproducedbythesamecompanyasDivine Design,andasithappened,oneimpeccablydecorateddoorclosedandanotherformidableonewasflungopen.

Whentheproducerscalledhimback,itwastoauditionfortheroleoftheon-cameraDesignAssistantonDivine Design.“Reallyyouknow,Ijusthappenedtodropmyresumeatatimewhenlotsofnewdesignshowswerebeingdevelopedandproduced,”recallsStevenmodestly.HeeagerlyacceptedtheopportunitytorevelindesigndécorworkingalongsidesomeofCanada’sbest.

WhiletheroomsonDivine Designweredecidedlyglamorous,Steven’sdayswerenotexactlyspentnibblingbonbonsandsippingchampagne.HedescribestheroleasbeinglikeaProjectManager(butworkinginTVland),responsibleforcoordinatingallthetradespeopleanddesignelementsfortheshow.Hehadtoworkoutallthetiming,theorders,deliveriesandinstallations,andbeavailableonsitewhentheshowwasbeingshot.

When Steven Southgate was growing up, he should have had wheels installed on the furniture in his bedroom because he was always moving it around. Just completing a stint as a key player on a wildly successful decorating show, he hasn’t looked back - or stopped decorating - since.

RepresentingdesignerCandiceOlson,healsohadtocheckinatalltheworksitestomakesureeverythingwasonscheduleandofcourse,perfect.“Ilovedthefreedomandthetrustthatwasgiventometogetthejobdone,”saysStevenaboutthiscreativecareer,buthealsomentionsthatthingsdidgettensesometimeswhenworkinganddealingwithsuppliersandtrades,especiallywhentheydidn’talwaysunderstandtheurgencyoftheprojects.

“ItwasagreatrunandImetsomanyinterestingandinspiringpeopleinthisindustry,”saysStevenwhojustlaunchedhisowncompanycalledStevenSouthgateI.D.“ThebestthingisthatIcannowgobacktomyoriginalplans–tohavemyowndesignconsultingfirm–butnowIhaveamassedadesignportfoliowithdetailsofanadditional212rooms,30kitchensand19bathroomsthatIhadahandindesigning.”

Whenhelooksback,StevensaystimespentatFanshawewastimewellspent.“Fanshawegavemeawell-roundededucationthatpreparedmefortherealworld.Ilearnedhowtosharemycreativevisionwithclients.”StillabelieverinFanshawe,hehashiredFanshawegradstoworkwithhimovertheyears,includingAlison Pugh (Interior Design 03)whowaswiththetelevisionshowforfiveyears.(Seesidebar).

Sincestrikingoutonhisown,Stevenhascompletedseveralfullkitchenrenovationprojects,abathroom,abrandnewloftcondo,andafullyremodelledbasementfamilyroom.Soevennowthatthecamerasaren’trolling,Stevencontinuestomaketheimpossibleseemeffortlessandcontinuestoincorporateeachclient’sownpersonalityandpersonalitemsintotheirrooms.

“Roomswithoutpersonalitemslookliketheyweredesignedbysomeoneelseandjustsetinyourspace,”saysSteven.“Itellclients-Iwantyourhometolooklikeyou,notlikeme.Iliketotakethingsthatmeansomethingtoyouandusethemasajumpingoffpoint.Ibelievethiswillgroundthespaceandhelpcreatearoomthatisasoriginalasyouare.”

It’sworkingwellandwhiletherestillmaybeanotherdivineinterventioninhisfuturesomewhere,fornowthiscreativesoulisperfectlyhappydetermininghisowndestiny.

Alison Pugh – Life in TV LandLikeSteven,Alison Pugh(Interior Design 03)

alwaysknewshewantedacreativecareer.GrowingupinacenturyhomeinTottenham,Ontario,shewassurroundedbybeautifulantiquesandthankstoherparents,shedevelopedanearlyappreciationforartanddesign.

Rightoutofhighschool,FanshaweCollegewasaperfectchoicebecauseshedidnothaveexperienceoranykindofportfolio.“AtFanshawe,Igainedextensivetechnicalskillsandwhileitwasallgreat,IfoundthefurniturehistorycoursewasactuallyoneofthemostvaluablethingsIlearned,”sherecalls.

SheworkedintheresidentialdesignfieldbeforeapplyingtoTVlandandlandingajobasaDesignAssistantonDivine Designfiveyearsago.ShewasinvolvedintakinginitialsitemeasurementsandprovidingbasedrawingsfortheleaddesignerandhostCandiceOlsontoworkfrom,plusprocuringitemsneededfortheshow.

“Iworkedverycloselywiththeretailersandsuppliers,selectingfinishesandstylesthatwouldfitwithinthedesignplans,”explainsAlison.“Itwasatechnicaltypeofjobbutsomuchfunbecausewegottoseesomanynewproducts.WegotsamplessenttousbymanufacturersfromacrossNorthAmericawholovedseeingtheirproductsfeaturedontheshow.”

Divine DesignwasmostlyshotinCanada,with26showsperyear,butAlisonwasthrilledwhenshegottoparticipatewithCandiceOlsonandtheteamonaspecialsegmentpreparedfortheLIVE! with Regis and KellyshowandtheyalsodidamakeoverambushinManhattan,NYthatwasbroadcastonThe Oprah Winfrey Showlastyear.


“IhopeonedayIwillbeabletogiveback.”ThiswasthelastlinespokenbyKristenO’HalloranassheacceptedherFanshaweCollegePracticalNursingdiploma.Sheutteredthislineinaspeech–whichwouldseemlikeacommonoccurrenceonagraduationday.Theuniquetwist,however,isthatKristenhadnovoice.Well,atleastnotananatomicalvoicebox.Shelostitduringoneofhermanysurgeriesinoneofthemanyyearsshebattledcancer.

Althoughshewaswithoutavoicebox,hermessagehasbeenheardincountlessstoriesandchangedanenormousnumberoflives.Wewanttocontinuetotellherstory…wewanttocontinuespreadinghermessageof

courageandhope.Wehadtheprivilegetobetouchedbyanangelhereonearth.KristenO’Halloranepitomizedthemeaningofperseveranceandcourage.Shedefinedcompassionandsheembodiedthespiritofhopeeverysingledayofherlife.

Kristenwasdiagnosedwithararetypeofcancerattheageof7.Herjourneybegan–yearsofsurgeries,doctor’svisits,chemotherapy,radiationandhospitalstays.Herchildhoodcouldveryeasilyhavesufferedasaresultofthedifficultiessheencountered,butKristensawthingsdifferently.Shefought.Shehoped.Shesurvived.Shewasachildbutshewaswisefarbeyondheryears.

Kristenalwayslivedherlifetothefullest.Thedoctorstoldhershewouldn’tbeabletoplaysportslikeeveryoneelse–yetsheplayedbaseball,ringetteandhockeyoncountlessteams,includingastintasthegoalieforthechampionship-winninghighschoolgirls’hockeyteam.Thedoctorstoldherthatduetothepermanentholeinherthroatthatallowedhertobreathe,shewouldbeunabletoswim.ButshespenteverysummerinthewateratWasagaBeachorinabackyardpool.ThatwasKristen–alwayswillingtodotheimpossible,tochallengetheboundaries,toachievetheinsurmountable.Sheneverstoppedfighting.Shenevergaveuphope.

Memorial bursary established for a courageous young woman

Against all odds, an incredibly positive young woman named Kristen O’Halloran received her college diploma in Practical Nursing at a special ceremony on September 10, 2007. Shewastooilltoattendtheregulargraduationbutsheremaineddeterminedtoseethisgoalthrough–agoalshesetasayounggirl.Sheknewallaboutthehealthcaresystemandthetremendousneedforcareproviders–sheherselfhadbeeninandoutofhospitalspracticallyallofherlife,battlingcancerandseriousillnesswithcourageandhope.

KristenO’Halloranfinishedherjourneyonthisearthatage25afteracourageousandgenerouslifewelllived.Hersister,ErinO’Halloran,gaveanincrediblymovingspeechattheCelebrationofKristen’sLifeonJuly11,2008,andErinhasagreedtoshareitwithyou.ItexplainshowspecialKristenwastoallwhoknewherandhow,afterdeath,herstorycontinuestoinspirethosewhohearit.

Herlastyearsoflife,andtheonesfilledwiththemostpainandchallenge,werebyfarherfullest.Shewentparasailingandzip-cordinginHawaii,skiedWhistlerBlackcombinBritishColumbia,cruisedtheCaribbean,andsaidaspeechasthemaid-of-honoratherbestfriend’sweddingintheBahamas…allwhilebalancingschool,work,chemoandmultiplesurgeries.Shecontinuedtofight.Shecontinuedtohope.

WhenpeoplemetKristen,theywereastoundedbyherstrength.Theywereinspiredbyhercourage.Teammatesandchemobuddiesalikeallfoundsolaceinherundyingcommitmenttoembracelifeeveryday.Shenevergaveup,sheneverlosthope,andbecauseofher–manyotherpeoplefoundtheirinnerstrengthtofighttheirownbattles.Kristengavepeoplethemostpreciousgiftofall–shegavethemhope.

Herworldandourscamecrashingdownwiththerealizationthatshewasgoingtoloseherbattle.KristendiedonJuly7th,2008.Welostadaughter,sister,friend,teammate,soldierandnurse,butwegainedanangel.Itiswithherinspirationandcommitmenttoeternalhopethatweasagroupwanttocontinueherfightsothatotherscanbenefitfromthecomfortofknowingthatanythingispossible.ShewasaDeterminedAngeltoSustainHope.Wewillcontinuetotellherstory–wewillcontinuetosustainhope.

OnAugust24,2009,thefirstbursaryrecipienttobenefitfromtheKristen O’Halloran Memorial BursarywasRobynThomson,aNursingstudentatFanshaweCollege.AboveareKristen’sparents,MarshaO’Halloran(left)andDougO’Halloran(right)presentingthebursarytoRobyn(centre).

AsKristen’slovingparentsmadethepresentation,theysaid,“Wearehonouredtopresentthefirstawardtodaytoyou,Robyn,andwishyouallthebestasyouembarkonyournursingjourney.WehopethatKristen’slegacywillempoweryoutobecomeanincrediblecaregiver,friendandhealthcareprovider.”

Fromthispointon,thisbursarywillbegivenouteveryyeartoaFanshaweNursingstudentwhoembodiesthe

samequalitiesthatKristendid–hope,perseverance,courageandstrengthinthefaceofadversityorchallenge.ThebursaryfundwassetupfrommemorialdonationsandfundraisingthefamilydidbecausetheywantedtokeepKristen’smemoryaliveandgiveabursaryeachyeartoaFanshawestudenttoassistwithcollegecosts.

Undertheprovincialgovernment’sOntarioTrustforStudentSupportprogram,donationstoFanshaweCollegetocreateendowedstudentbursariesqualifytohavetheprincipalamountmatched.ThatiswhattheO’HalloranfamilydidanditmeantthattheamounttheygatheredandgrantedtoFanshaweforKristen’sMemorialwasmorethandoubledbytheProvinceandthenthefullamountinvestedsothateachyear,interestearnedcouldbepaidoutintheformofabursary.

For the past five years, students and alumni have been participating in the Mentoring for Success program. Maybe this is your year to get involved?

TheMentoring for Successprogramisamatchingservicewherebyactiveworkingalumnimembersgivetheirtimetoprovideadviceandencouragementtosomeonewithlessexperienceinthatsamecareerfield.

OnesuchmatchthathasreallybenefitedfromtheprogramisAlex Kamps,acurrentstudentintheBachelorofAppliedTechnology,BiotechnologyprogramandAnne (McKay) Rigg(Medical Lab Technology ’78).Anneworkedinthemedicalfieldbeforebecomingateacher.ShecurrentlyworksasaninstructoratWesterveltCollegeinLondonandsheisalsoanactiveadvisorandassessorwithinherprofessionalassociation.

“Thishasbeenanexcellentmatchtobepartof,”saysAlex,whowouldliketobecomeahighschoolscienceteachersomeday.“Anneseesthiscareerfromseveralangles–working,teachingandadvising–andshehasbeengenerousinsharingherexperiencesandgivingmesomegreatnetworkingideas.”

WhentheywerefirstmatchedinFall2008,AnneRiggwasn’tquitesurewhattoexpect,butshewasopentotheidea.“Iwassurprisedthatweendeduphavingsomuchincommonanditwassoeasytostrikeupafriendship,”recallsAnne.“Duringourmatch,wemetforcoffeeandwetalkedaboutbothlifeingeneralandspecificcareerquestionsthatAlexhad.Alexwasverymotivatedtoget

asmuchaspossibleoutofoursessionswhichIfoundrefreshingforsuchayoungperson.”

Nowthattheofficialmatchperiodisdone,thetwostillkeepintouchandtheyaresoldonthevalueofmentorship.“Ireallyencourageworkingalumnimemberstobecomementorsiftheycan,”saysAlex,whowillgraduatefromhisprogramin2011.“Youcanreallymakeadifferencetosomeonejuststartingout.IplantobecomeamentorinthefuturemyselfbecauseIhavegottensomuchoutofit.”

Anneagreesthattherearemanybenefitstotheprogram.“IhavelearnedfromAlexaboutwhatheisstudyinginbiotechnologythesedaysanditisinterestinghowthecurrenttechnologiesarebeingtaughtandbeingused.Thisisfieldwherethepaceoftechnologicalchangeisreallyfastsoweallhavetokeeplearningjusttostayontopofthings.”

Managing current affairs and so much moreIt takes nerves of steel and true professionalism to balance the many public faces of the Thames Valley District School Board. Fortunately Kate Young is up to the challenge.

HavinggrownupinLondonandhavingreportedthenewsdailyhereformorethan20years,Kate (Anderson) Young (Broadcast Journalism 75)isuniquelyqualifiedtowearanumberofhatsandtakeonanumberofchallenges.ShelovesthiscityandknowsLondonandMiddlesexinsideout,soitnotsurprisingthatwhenshewasofferedahighprofilejobwithoneoftheregion’slargestemployersin2008,shejumpedatthechance.

Indoingso,KateYoungbecameManager,PublicAffairsandCommunityRelationsfortheThamesValleyDistrictSchoolBoard(TVDSB).TheTVDSBisoneofthelargestpublicschoolboardsinOntariocoveringmorethan7,000squarekilometersandresponsiblefor76,000studentsin154elementaryschoolsand30secondaryschools.Italsoemploysmorethan8,000fullandpart-timestaff,overhalfofthemteachers.ShetookonthisroleafterservingasManagerofCommunityRelationsforTDBankFinancialGroupinLondonforthreeyears.

HerrolewiththeTVDSBiswideranging,sinceshenotonlymanagesmediarelations,butshealsooverseestheThamesValleyEducationFoundationandthecommunityuseoffacilitiesdepartment.Inherrole,shealsomanagestheonlinecontentfortheBoard,andgetsinvolvedinspeechwriting,specialeventsandceremonies.

“Thisisapositionwithalittlebitofeverythingandnotwodaysarethesame,”

saysKate.“Ourteamisalwaysreadytorespondtowhateverishappeninginourschoolsandinourcommunities.Iknowverywellthemedia’sdeadlinesandchallenges,soweworkwiththemdailytostayontopofthepressingissuesoftheday.”

KateYoungisalsooneofFanshaweCollege’sbestallies.In2000,KatereceivedaDistinguishedAlumniAwardfromFanshaweCollegeandwasnominatedforthePremier’sAwardforheroutstandingcareerachievementsandhermanycontributionstothecommunity.

Overtheyears,Katehasbeeninvolvedwithawiderangeofcharitableorganizationsandcommunitygroups.InSeptember2009,sheacceptedathree-yeartermtoserveontheFanshaweCollegeBoardofGovernors.

“MyhearthasalwaysbeenatFanshaweCollege.Ihadfamilyandsomanyfriendswhoattendedtooandmyfatherworkedthereyearsago,”recallsKate,whocreditshercollegeeducationforgivingherthecareerskillstobesuccessful.

“Sonowitismyturntocontributeaswell,bybringingmyperspectivesandexperiencetotheBoardofGovernors,andinturnIcanbringbackcollegeissuestotheThamesValleyDistrictSchoolBoard.Iseesomanywayswecanworktogethertobringtheschoolsystemandpost-secondaryinalignmentforthegoodofallourstudentsandtobuildstrongercommunities.”

WhenBrian Lee(Photography 74/Advanced Photography 75)washonouredwitha2009President’sDistinguishedAchievementAwardinthecategoryDistinguishedTeacher,itmadeperfectsense.ItwasafittinghonourforsomeonewhohasspentmorethanthreedecadesatFanshaweCollegeandwhohasbeensodedicatedtodeliveringthebestforthestudentsallthoseyears.

DuringhistimeatFanshawe,Briansawthecampusfromjustabouteveryangle–asastudent,technician,teacher,andadministrator–andhelivedthroughadizzyingarrayoftechnologicalchanges.

Brianwasalwaysastrongproponentofinnovativeideasandinitiativesandheservedasthedrivingforcebehindthemovetodigitalphotographyin1992.HerecognizedtheimportanceofkeepingpacewiththerapidchangesinhisdisciplineandhisworkensuredthatFanshaweremainedthemostrelevantcollegeforaspiringprofessionals.

FollowingontheheelsofthepioneeringworkdoneatFanshawe,Brianhimselfwascalledupontogiveworkshopsandbeaconsultanttoprofessionalphotographersandotherinstructorsastothecapabilitiesandlimitationsofdigitaltechnology.

OutsideofFanshawe,BrianoperateshisownfreelancephotographybusinessandhehasbeenanactivememberoftheProfessionalPhotographersofCanada(PPOC)andtheProfessionalPhotographersofOntario(PPOC-ON)sincehisgraduationin1975.

Briantookkeyleadershippositionswiththosegroupsovertheyearsandin1994,heachievedrecognitionbythePPOCasaMasterofPhotographicArts.Ayearearlier,BrianwasdesignatedasrecipientofthePPOCSpecialistPhotographeroftheYearAward.

InJune2009whenBrianretiredafter34yearsfromfull-timeworkatthecollege,heleftfromtheroleofCoordinatorofthePhotography,AdvancedPhotography,andMediaTheoryandProductionPrograms.However,inSeptember,hereturnedtoteachtwodaysaweektosecondandthirdyearphotographystudents.

“Thisallowsmetokeeptheverybestpartofmycareer–theclassroomteaching–butleavesplentyoftimeforoutsidepursuitsincludingphotographyprojects,travel,locationshoots,givingworkshops,speaking,judgingandadjudicating,”saysBrian.Theseareaspectsofhiscareerthathavebeentremendouslyimportanttohim,andvaluedhighlybyhispeers,sowefullyexpectthathewillbejustasbusyinretirementashewasforsomanyyearsatFanshaweCollege.

DebraBodkindidn’texpecthercareerinlawenforcementtoleadwhereitdid.Apoliceofficersince1987,shehasbecomeanexpertininvestigationsandinterviewing.TheseskillswereputtogoodusewhenshetravelledoverseastoworkoncommissionsinKosovo,Chad,andDarfurandsawtheworstofhumancrueltyandsufferingfirst-hand.

Herexperienceschangedher,profoundlyandpermanently.“ThepeopleImethadgonethroughsomuchmorethanIwilleverhavetoandyettheystillmanagedtobekind,generous,andcaring,”shesaid.

Inspiredbywhatshesaw,shebegansharingherexperiencesandinsightsthroughpresentationstothepublic.“IreallybenefitedfromthepublicspeakingbecauseitseemedtobejustwhatIneededatthattime,”sheexplains.“ShortlyaftercominghomefromDarfur,Ihadabadcaseofdepressionandwasdiagnosedwithsignsofpost-traumaticstressdisorder.Talkinginfrontpeopleofallagesandseeingthatmywordsmovedthemenoughtotakesomeactionthemselvestotryandstopthegenocide,IfeltlikeIhadregainedabitofmomentum.”

AfterworkinginOntarioearlyinhiscareer,Johnacceptedanopportunityatoneoftheworld’smostrenownedmedicalinstitutions:DukeUniversityMedicalCentreinNorthCarolina.HestartedatDukeasastafftherapistin1992,andeventuallymovedintohiscurrentpositionasClinicalResearchCoordinator.HesaysthatDuke’sresearchfocuswasabigdrawforhim.

“Researchrelatedcareersinrespiratorytherapytendtobefewandfarbetween,”hesays.“Iwasfortunateenoughtolandoneandithasgivenmetheopportunitytobeonthecuttingedgeoftechnology,labresearch,andcriticalcare.MyresearchisfocusedmainlyonAdultCriticalCare.Iaminvolvedbothwiththenewtechnologyandnovelwaystomanagepatientsintheintensivecareunits.CertainlywiththeH1N1pandemic,thisisahugechallenge.”

Our31stRecReunion,whichtookplaceatmyhomeonAugust29,2009wasagreatsuccess.Wehad17inattendancewhichincludedgradsandspouses.WehavemadestrongbondswithmanyspouseswhoarepartofourRec.78familyandwhohaveattendedthereunions,includingTerryPeacock,KimSmale,HeatherLamont,EdCotnamandLesTervit.WemissedourfriendandwifeofDavidMcDonald,Rosemary,whopassedawaysinceourfirsttworeunions.

Thisyear,ourreunionwelcomedgradswhotravelledfromOttawa,Niagara,Listowel,Tillsonburg,AlymerandMooretown.Festivitiesbeganat3p.m.withappetizersandmunchies,followedbyaBBQsteakdinnerandcontinueduntilwaypastmostofourbedtimesthesedays!!!Wedidnotwanttheeveningtoendandhavedecidedthatweshouldplantomeetonceayearsoplansareunderwayfornextyear’sreunionbutthistimeinNiagara-on-the-LakewithhostsDannyDegazio&DeniseArkell!Can’twait!

Recreation Leadership Reunion – Class of 1978

ThecommunityatFanshaweCollegewassaddenedtohearofthedeathofJesseDavidson,wholosthisbattlewithDuchenneMuscularDystrophyattheageof29onFriday,November6th,2009.

JessestudiedatFanshawefrom1999to2002,andgraduatedinAugust2002withaCo-opEndorsedDiplomainHotelManagement.In2006,JessewashonouredasoneofsixDistinguishedAlumniforhisdetermination,courageandinspiration.Jesselovedsports,computersandcookingandhewasalwaysquickwithajokeandasmile.Hehandledhisfamewithgraceanddignity.

In1995,Jesse,withhisfatherJohnpushinghiswheelchair,travelled3,300kilometresacrossOntariotoraiseresearchdollarstofightDuchenneMuscularDystrophy.TheOntariotrekof“Jesse’sJourney”raised$1million.In1998,afurther$2millionwascontributedbyCanadiansfromcoasttocoastwhenJohnwalkedover8,000kilometresacrossCanadafor“Jesse’sJourney,aFather’sTribute”.

Asaresult,JesseDavidsonLaboratorieshavebeenestablishedacrossNorthAmericaforDuchenneMuscularDystrophyresearch.ThegrowingJesseDavidsonEndowmentFundhasnowgeneratedmorethan$3milliontowardsresearch.

TheFanshaweCollege,St.ThomasCampus,NursingClassof1984celebratedits25threuniononJune5-6,2009.Itwasanincredibleeventthattookseveralclassmatesayeartoplan.We’vecelebratedour5th,20th,22ndandnowour25threunion.Wewereaclassof50;fourclassmateswe’veneverbeenabletofindsincegraduation.Twohavepassedawaysince.Everyoneelsehasbeenintouch.That’squiteanaccomplishment.

OnFriday,June5,wegottogetheratTheBeaneryrestaurantinSt.Thomas.Twenty-sixclassmatesandtheirsignificantothersenjoyedahighspiritedeveningwithlotsofscreamsofjoyandwalksdownmemorylane.OnSaturdayJune6,wegatheredinBelmontatthefarmofoneofourclassmates,MarciaGartly.Itwasapot-luck,pizzaparty,bonfiretheme.Wehadenoughfoodtofeedseveralclasses.

MarciaandherhusbandScottdidatremendousjobhostingourevent.Marciatookouryearbookandcopiedeverypictureandstapledthemtotwotrees.Itgaveusanopportunitytoreliveourtwoyearstogetherthroughthosepictures.Oneofourteachers,EdytheAnnFleming,wasinattendanceonSaturday.Itmeantsomuchtoallofustohaveherthere.Shewasanintegralpartofoursuccess.

Asaclass,wecollectedmoneytoplantatreeontheGartlyfarmtohonourourclassandclassmateswho’vepassedaway(RickJewell).Thetreewillbeplantedthissummerandaplaqueplacedonthetree.
