Famous People – The Underground Railroad
● Objectives○ To know the important people of The Underground
Railroad And know what they did
○ To understand that both slaves and free people helped Both in the process and activating
○ To understand the meaning of an abolitionist
● The Actual Lesson Plan○ To start out this lesson, go around the classroom and ask
everyone to write down someone they admire, someone they look up and want to be like and why
○ After they finish this (about five minutes), go around the room and have them share the different people and why they admire them (10 minutes approximately)
○ Go on to explain that there were many people important that the slaves and other abolitionists admired in The Underground Railroad
Abolitionist – someone who advocated against slavery and wanted it to end
○ These people included Harriet Tubman
● A.K.A. Moses (and go on to explain her role) Frederick Douglass
● Publishes North Star (explain his role) John Brown
● Wanted to outlaw slavery for good (explain his role)
William Still● Born free (explain role)
Susan B. Anthony● Abolitionist (explain role)
Levi Coffin ● President of The Underground Railroad (explain
role in depth)○ After explaining the people, have the students break
into groups of three to four people and have them work in groups to create a small presentation (due the next class or in a week) about one of the famous people of The Underground Railroad
This will include…● PowerPoint presentation
● Everyone in the group talking● Three to seven minutes (average five)● At least three sources
