Ready, set….GO! APMM President Terry Wellman We've rounded another year. Saying goodbye to 2011 was easy for some, tough for others. Ready or not, here we come with great hopes for a profitable new year in 2012. I want to bring you up to speed on the upcoming conference in Kansas City this coming March 16-19, 2012. The theme is Growth and Opportunity or Ready, Set, GO! The team that has been putting this conference together has really pushed the envelope. Kan-sas City will be a vibrant and exciting location for us. The night life is pop-ping. There are great museums, and the barbecue is out of this world. When Sue and I visited the area two years ago, we were able to hang out with the Garmin team and have lunch with them at Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ, one of KC's renowned barbecue res-taurants. Words can't describe how tasty that meal was. For those of you who are into motorcycles, there is the Harley Davidson plant which builds three lines from ground up as well as drive trains. Some of us have had dis-cussions of an impromptu HD tour be-fore or after the conference.

We have some really great tours set up that will not only be entertaining but educa-tional too. KU Dept. of Visual Art, Garmin, Hallmark, and R&D Prototype have tre-mendous model shops and expert staffs. There are more tour choices which you can see at the link further down below. As is usually the case, I always find myself debating which tour to take as I want to participate in all of them. Also, the WWI Museum is the only one of its kind with in-credible displays. One walks away with the feeling of having experienced the conflict and technology of the time first-hand. If you cannot make it to the museum tour on Friday, feel free to walk there any time dur-ing the conference as it is very close to the hotel where all of the action will be based. Please check out the conference pages for better detailed descriptions of the facilities that we will be visiting at: http://www.modelmakers.org/conference-2012

As many of you know, tours are not the only part of the conference. The workshops are another way that we are able to share our incredible knowledge with each other. Our workshops are geared towards working with new technologies and how to incorporate them into your workflow. Other topics are centered towards growing your shop, managing your business, guerrilla marketing, and many other subjects that are pertinent to our success and survival as model makers. I have found that APMM conferences give each member the potential to work alongside others to solve the challenges facing all of us as model makers, shop owners, and team members.

If you have an idea for a workshop or would like to present or be part of a presentation, please contact Samanthi Martinez or Bruce Willey as they are coordinating topics to further develop the workshop offerings. And hey, feel free to bring a model or pictures of something you've done recently that you and your team are proud of. We'll see you there!

APMM partners with North American HTEC ( Haas Technical Education Center ) Network

In July, 2011 the APMM was approved as an HTEC partner and is now listed in the HTEC Partner Directory. To review the APMM partner listing go to www.HTECNetwork.org and at the top of the landing page click on “Partner” . In the left hand column click on A-Z which will alphabetize the Partner listing - normally a random listing. Once on the APMM Partner landing page if you click on the APMM logo you will get a second page for the APMM. We are trying to attract new student APMM members, some teachers and maybe some schools. Check out the HTEC partners – you may want to do business with them.

HTEC is a sponsor of SkillsUSA. See www.skillsusa.org . The SkillsUSA Championship for Precision Machining & CNC Skills is held every summer for high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and service occupations. It is a very big event. A lot of skills are included in the contests but not model making yet. HTEC is also a sponsor of the Shop Rat Foundation. This is a technical education program for those in 10th grade or younger. It is based in Michigan and they also have a summer camp. To find out what a shop rat is check this web address: http://www.shoprat.org/ whatisashoprat.php. Since most APMM members use CNC machines there are many ways that APMM and individual members could benefit by learning more about and getting involved with the HTEC Network of schools, partners and events near you. Title: Title: Title: Title: Pop Sculpture: How to Create Action Figures and Collectible Statues Authors: Authors: Authors: Authors: Tim Bruckner, Zach Oat and Ruben Procopio Publisher: Publisher: Publisher: Publisher: Watson-Guptill ISBN: ISBN: ISBN: ISBN: 978-0-8230-9522-3 Published: Published: Published: Published: October 19, 2010 Format: Format: Format: Format: Soft cover, 272 pages, full color, 8.5 ” x 11 ”

In the story book called Cranberry Thanksgiving, Maggie ’ s grandmother keeps her famous and much sought-after recipe for cranberry bread carefully hidden behind a brick in the fireplace. Well, if cranberry bread were pop culture icons captured in mass produced plastic form, the authors of Pop Sculpture have taken the opposite approach and written an action figure cookbook that would make your mouth drool with delight and made it available to everyone. Pop Sculpture covers everything you ’ d need or want to know about creating the prototypes, from concept design, tools, materials, to how-to methods, molding, casting, painting, photographing tips and even insight on taking your efforts to the professional level. This book has so much useful information in it, that try-ing to describe everything in this short column would prove futile. Highly recommended for novice or seasoned sculptors and modelers alike. Anyone who has cut a 3" chunk of ABS on a table saw knows how much fun it can be. If you use a general purpose plastic blade with 60-80 teeth and it is slightly less then new, the plastic will heat up and melt around the blade or get hung up in the saw throat plate. It is hard enough to push thick heavy material through any-way. We have been using a 10-tooth carbide rip saw blade to easily cut ABS slabs on our 10" table saw. With this blade, less contact area and more side clearance re-duces the effort substantially and creates less friction and heat. The blades are fairly cheap ( less carbide! ) and are made with a thick plate for stability and nice large carbide teeth. The blade may look intimidating to some but it does cut fairly smoothly. Of course, any dull blade will cause friction and should be sharpened for best performance and safety. Skarpaz is one brand we have bought, but there may be others.
