ARBORetuM guiDe spotlight Cottonwood Populus deltoidesThe cottonwood is a huge fast growing tree that can reach 100 feet tall and several feet in diameter. the state champion resides in Bandera County 80 feet tall and 372 inches in circumference. A cottonwood tree almost always indicates there is water is nearby. The leaves quake and rattle in the breeze; sounding like rain. The seeds are attached to a tuff of “cotton” that allows them to be carried by the wind. Fall foliage is a clear yellow. The trees are easy to propagate and are short lived, very useful in the paper pulp industry. It is a host plant for several butterfly species: eastern tiger swallowtail, viceroy, mourning cloak, and red spotted admiral. Native Americans often use a hollow cottonwood tree to make drums.

An arboretum is a place for the study, display and preservation of trees. Thanks to the foresight and devotion of members of the Guada Coma Garden Club, Landa Park was designated as an arboretum in 1982. this arboretum acts as a living library of trees. In 2007, the arboretum was named after William and Dolores Schumann, in honor of their endless devotion to this botanical jewel.

PiCK uP yOuR guiDe: the Arboretum Guide is available for purchase at the Parks Administration Office. the printed guide is $5. the walking trail is 1.25 miles and open to the public. the guide and map are also available, free of charge, on the Parks and Recreation website www.nbtexas.org/ARBORetuM
