PLEASE NOTEAll full-time and some part-time faculty members owe Flex hours as part of their professional development obligation. The Tentative Contract for Services (TCS) states the Flex obligation. Full-time faculty members are obligated for 24 hours for the academic year PLUS the number of minutes identified on their overload Tentative Contract for Services (TCS). Faculty members who teach overload classes held on the same day as a Flex Day have an additional Flex obligation equaling the total number of hours they would have taught. For full time faculty, the Flex obligation must be completed within the academic year, July 1 to June 30.

Friday, August 22nd is the only MANDATORY Flex day for full-time faculty. Full-time faculty are required to attend a minimum of 6 hours of professional development activities scheduled for that day, and adjunct faculty and classified staff are encouraged to attend.

Experiencing Assessment from the Student Perspective Room: Aspen Hall room FL1-107Have you taken an assessment test for your discipline? If so, how did you do? If not, how do you think you’ll do? In this workshop you will have the opportunity to take one assessment test of your choice and follow up with reflection on that experience. With recent changes in assessment and more to come, it behooves faculty to get in touch with the assessment tests our students must take in order to transition into our system. Experiencing the assessment process firsthand is a preliminary step for understanding where our students enter, why they are there, and how we can channel their success. The goal of this workshop is to generate ideas about how we can develop pre-assessment tools and promote our students’ success. Hosted by Lisa Sapra, Bernadette Anayah, Tina Royer. Many are ill prepared for college-level rigor. Still others have such overwhelming societal and economic pressures that success seems unattainable. As a campus community, we all play a critical role in helping our students achieve their life and educational goals. As such, the campus is actively engaged in planning for two initiatives aimed at addressing these realities: the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP, or “Triple-S P”) Plan and the Student Equity Plan (SEP). You have probably heard of these, but what are they? What is my role? What do I need to know? How will my students benefit? Please join us for this campus-wide discussion of student success activities that we

Lunch: 12:00noon – 1:00pmSafe Spaces: What are they and why do we need them? Room: Aspen Hall room FL1-08Join Marjorie while enjoying your lunch. Have you had a student who expressed feelings of being unwelcome or even unsafe on campus? Would you like to know why some students feel unwelcome and even discriminated against? And have you wondered how you could help your students and other students who don’t feel welcome on campus? Many colleges and universities have developed a Safe Space or Safe Zone program to create a safe place where students can go to talk about feelings of being unsafe or unwelcome. These programs were originally developed to help the GLBTQ students feel welcome, safe, and included as they were commonly targets of discrimination (intentional and unintentional) and hate crimes. Since then, many campuses have expanded these programs to help any student or employee who feels unsafe or unwelcome for any reason. So come and learn about the issues that students and employees may face, and how Safe Space programs can help them and help to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment. Hosted by Marjorie Samples. Meets FLC Strategic Plan Items III: Student Success – All Students and V.A.I.I: Leadership. Through an examination of Merchant of Venice and Othello and a working definition of racism versus prejudice, I will provide evidence for a theory that racism did not exist prior to race-based slavery and transatlantic slave trade. I will investigate how the European consciousness prior to the impact of slavery, based on Shakespeare’s plays, in particular, permeated the consciousness of European settlers of the new world. Hosted by Yvonne Price.
