CONTENTSINTRODUCTIONBRIEF HISTORYHOW IT WORKSDESCRIPTIONADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGESAPPLICATIONSIS IT RENEWABLE?CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION:-The name "geothermal" comes from two Greek words: "geo" means "Earth" and "thermal" means "heat".

The earth beneath our feet contains a significant amount of energy in the form of heat.

In volcanic areas, molten rock can be very close to the surface. Sometimes we can use that heat.

BREIEF HISTORY:-

The history of geothermal power can be traced back to over 10,000 years ago to the American Paleo-Indians at their settlement in hot springs.

In 18th century, geothermal energy was used in industries in Italy. The Geothermal Energy power station was built a) First in Italy

b) Second in New Zealand

C) After that in Iceland, Japan, Philippines and United States.

In 1960s geothermal energy power plant was constructed in U.S.A.

HOW IT WORKS:-

We drill holes down to the hot region.

Steam comes up, is purified.

And used to drive turbines, which drive electric generators.

DESCRIPTION:-Geothermal energy is an important resource in volcanically active places such as Iceland and New Zealand.

Geothermal energy system depends upon a) how hot the water. b) how hot the rocks. c) And how much water we pump down to them.

Components of geothermal resources are a) Heat source

b) Fluid carrying heat from the earths crust to the surface.

c) Sufficient rock permeability to circulate thermal water. GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT DESIGNS:- Dry Steam:-

Produce Electricity directly from steam.

The steam drives turbines.

FLASH STEAM:-Temperature greater than 200C pumped at high pressure.

The steam drives turbines and generator.

BINARY CYCLE:-Operates at lower Temperature. Secondary fluid flash the steam. The steam drives turbines. It tends to be less efficient.

ADVANTAGES:-No fuel is needed.

It does not produce any pollution.

It is significant Cost Saving.

It is relatively efficient and reliable.

Low emissions takes place.

It has created many job opportunities.

It is very beneficial for economy. DISADVANTAGES:-May Release Harmful Gases.

Suited To Particular Region.

Can Run Out Of Steam.

High Installation Costs.

Not Widespread Source of Energy.

APPLICATIONS:-80% of the energy demand from vegetables growers is met by using geothermal energy.

Used in fishing farms.

Industry is another consumer of geothermal energy.

Used for heating residential districts in winter .

Most important application is that Geothermal power is a good electricity generator.

IS IT RENEWABLE?

Geothermal energy is renewable.

The energy keeps on coming, as long as we don't pump too much cold water down and cool the rocks too much. CONCLUSION:-Fully replaced by a natural gas or oil heating system.

Photovoltaic system reduces the annual cost by more than 60 %.

Geothermal process is profitable.REFERENCES:-http://www.alternative-energy-resources.net
