A: When you have something done.Regardez ces exemples:

– I get my house cleaned (meaning…I don’t clean my house, but someone does it for me…I wish!) :

– I’m going to get my car washed (meaning…I’m not going to wash my car myself):

Je fais nettoyer ma maison.

Je vais faire laver ma voiture

B. When you have someone do something for you.

- NOTE: The causitive is followed by a noun or pronoun. If there is only 1, it is always direct. Note where the object comes:

i.e. I’m making the students listenJe fais écouter les élèves(Je les fais écouter)

He is making his children eatIl fait manger ses enfants(Il les fait manger)

You are making your boyfriend payTu fais payer ton copain(Tu le fais payer)

If there are 2 objects, 1 is direct and the other is indirect.Note the format:

faire + infinitive + thing being done(DO) + par/à + person doing it(IO)

i.e. I’m having the students write the essay.je fais écrire l’essai par les étudiants(je le leur fais écrire)

He’s making his daughter mow the lawn.Il fait tondre la pelouse à sa fille.(Il la lui fait tondre)

Mlle. is making us learn this stupid stuffElle fait apprendre ce truc bête à

nous(Elle nous le fait apprendre)

• i.e. Se faire couper les cheveux:– Getting one’s hair cut: (you are having

someone cut your hair)
