Introduction

4

The constantly increasing requirements for wheel bearings demand bearings with greater precision, that are designed for all load conditions. Increased maximum speed of today’s vehicles, even the smallest cars, are considerably higher than those of earlier vehicles.

These higher speeds are made possible, among other things, by improvements in suspension tuning, and as a result, wheel bearings are subjected to greater forces, espe-cially on bends. The simple single row ball or tapered roller bearings have not been able to handle these forces for many years.

That is why, in recent years, wheel bearings in the private car sector have continually developed into more compact units. Today, a wide variety of double row angular contact ball bearings or tapered roller bearings are used. With the integration of wheel hubs, flanges, ABS encoders and sen-sors, today’s wheel bearings should rather be seen as wheel bearing units. At the same time, these wheel bearing units have developed into maintenance-free components with a long service life. Adjustment of the bearing play, formerly essential to vehicle maintenance, is now a thing of the past.

These compact designs demand an ever greater degree of installation precision. Incorrect installation would have a disastrous effect on the service life of today’s bearing units.

The press fitting of bearings with a suitable special tool has now become standard. Yet even that still leaves ample room for errors, for example due to incorrect handling of the special tool.

The fitting precision required when pressing bearings into the wheel hub is now in the hundredth of a millimeter range. This makes fitting wheel bearings in a repair workshop increasingly difficult and the frequency of errors is rising. Faulty installation commonly results in damage to the wheel bearing or the wheel hub.

Some vehicle manufacturers have therefore gone for a compact design combining wheel bearing, wheel hub and brake disc. This design minimizes the sources of error.

FAG meets this special requirement with a total axle- by-axle repair solution designed for the purpose: FAG WheelDisc.

The FAG WheelDisc consists of the wheel bearing, the wheel hub with brake disc and associated ABS encoder. This combination provides optimum fitting precision.

FAG WheelDisc is a complete solution, including all assembly parts for axle-by-axle replacement. It reduces the time needed for installation and minimizes potential errors.

The bearing used in the FAG WheelDisc is a wheel bearing of the 1T generation. The 1 in the designation stands for a com- pact wheel bearing unit of the first generation. The T stands for Tapered roller bearing. This is also the difference between first generation bearings and those of the 1T generation. The first generation is fitted with double row ball bearings, the 1T generation encorporates double row taper rollers. The use of taper rollers makes it possible to handle higher axle loads than ball bearings while occupying the same design space for the wheel bearing mounting.

The bearing races and tapered rollers are made of low alloy, fully hardened chrome steel. The internal mechanism of the compact bearing comprises two mirror symmetrical rows of taper roller bearings. The inner race is split, providing a separate taper roller raceway for each roller bearing. The outer race is not split and extends over both taper roller bearings.

The bearing is sealed on both sides by double lipped cassette seals. As it is sealed on both sides, the bearing is protected from environmental influences such as dirt, dust and moisture and retains the lubricant in the bearing. A high performance grease provides lifetime lubrication for the bearing.

The brake disc is made of high carbon cast iron and is cast in one piece with the wheel hub. The wheel hub/brake disc com-bination is then machined.

In order to ensure optimal driving comfort, smooth braking, and to reduce any additional loads on the suspension due to unevenly distributed masses at higher wheel speeds, the wheel hub/brake disc combination is balanced after the machining.

The friction surface in the wheel hub/brake disc combination is subject to normal wear in driving operation. The hardness of the wheel hub/brake disc combination is therefore adjusted in relation to that of the brake pads so that the wear on the brake pads is higher.

In order to prevent corrosion, the brake disc is painted with a corrosion protection coating. After installation, during the first few kilometers on the road, this coating is automatically abraded from the brake surface whenever the brakes are applied.

In the FAG WheelDisc, the wheel bearing is permanently pressed into the wheel hub of the brake disc from the factory. This ensures, thanks to the specially calculated edge radius of the outer ring, that the inner housing of the wheel hub is not scored by any sharp edges.

The outer race of the bearing is fitted into the inner housing of the wheel hub at the factory. The press fitting creates an inter-ference fit. The wheel hub has a locating groove to secure the wheel bearing. The bearing is secured by a locking ring on the assembly side.

Important: Incorrect installation of a single wheel bearing could lead, in extreme cases, to the loss of a wheel while driving. Repair by replacing the whole unit with an FAG WheelDisc is there- fore advisable.

FAG WheelDisc with passive encoder

The FAG WheelDisc is fitted with an active (multipole) or passive (ferritic) encoder according to the design of the ABS system. This is fitted on the axle side of the brake disc hub.

In both cases, the signal generated by the encoder is detected by a corresponding sensor and transmitted as an input signal to the ABS/ESP/ASR regulator units.

Installation guidelines

The FAG WheelDisc is pushed on to the axle stubs and is not a press fit. The assembly-friendly edge radius of the inner rings prevent misalignment as it is pushed on to the axle stub. The FAG WheelDisc is secured by a center nut.

The tightening of the centre nut while the wheel bearing is stationary could lead to misalignment of the taper rollers and consequent damage to the raceway. It is therefore extremely important, while the nut is being tightened, to turn the wheel or brake disc, and thus the bearing, in the opposite direction to that of the center nut.

The adjustment of bearing play takes place through the clamping of the inner rings when the center nut is tightened with the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

To date the FAG WheelDisc can be fitted in a number of models from the vehicle manufacturers Opel, Peugeot and Renault.
