FACULTY OF HUMANITIES2007 UNDERGRADUATE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

(Valid only for the 2007 academic year – requirements may change in subsequent years)

The Faculty of Humanities offers a wide variety of programmes in the arts, the social sciences, the performing and creative arts, andeducation.

Our Undergraduate programmes foster communication, flexibility, imagination, social sensitivity, language competence, negotiatingskills and the capacity to work in teams, rather than a narrow vocational training. This leads to a great choice in career options orfurther study in the Graduate School in Humanities.

The Faculty offers general degrees as well as named degrees.

GENERAL DEGREE PROGRAMMES

What is a general degree programme in Humanities?

A general Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Science degree is a formative degree which requires students to study two approvedmajors, selected from a wide choice of subjects. (See table of majors.) Students have the freedom to choose from a wide range ofcourses to include in their curriculum which are spread over a minimum of three years of full-time study.

Who would be interested in this degree programme?

Students with a general interest in the arts, humanities and social sciences, who wish to construct their own course of study in a formativedegree, rather than being committed to a prescribed set curriculum.

What courses will you take?

Students enrolling for a degree programme will take at least 20 semester courses. 8 to 12 semester courses will form part of twomajors selected from the lists below. Students who select both majors from the list of Bachelor of Arts majors will register for a Bachelorof Arts degree. To calculate your points, double your points for English and add your next five best subjects. If you passed two languages at the firstlanguage Higher Grade level, add two points. Preference is given to applicants who indicate a Humanities programme as their firstchoice. Applicants who narrowly miss the points required for the mainstream BA/BSocSc may be selected for placement in the ExtendedBA/BSocSc degree.

What are named degree programmes in Humanities?

Named degree programmes are special combinations of disciplines and courses which have been curriculated to provide you witha particular knowledge and skills base. Every programme is made up of specific, pre-set courses for each year of study, and everyyear of study builds on the knowledge and skills developed during the previous year.

Who would be interested in named degree programmes?

Students with an interest in specific aspects of the arts, humanities and social sciences who wish to follow a structured course of study, who are reasonably sure of their interests and are willing to commit themselves to a tightly-structured curriculum. It is possible to changefrom certain named degree programmes to a general degree programme.

• Film and Media Production (3 years)

• Fine Art (4 years)

• Theatre and Performance (4 years)

Named programmes leading to the Bachelor of Social Science degree:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSWhat are the entrance requirements?

To be considered for admission to a degree, applicants require matriculation exemption. For some programmes, the minimum Humanitiesentry requirement is 40 points, with a D(HG) for English and acceptable Placement Test in English for Educational Purposes (PTEEP)results. (PTEEP tests are written on 27 May and 16 September, 2006 – details in the UCT Prospectus.) Other programmes have higherminimum requirements.

Applicants are required to write the PTEEP and the Quantitative Literacy Test (QLT). The PTEEP is a test of academic literacy. It is notan achievement test and is syllabus free. In other words, it will not test for information that students have covered in any specificdiscipline area. The test incorporates a combination of multiple choice questions and productive pieces. The QLT is a test of ability towork with quantitative information presented in the form of texts, tables, charts, graphs and diagrams. It does not assume knowledgeof any particular school subject. The test items are all multiple choice questions.

PLEASE NOTE: The Faculty can only consider an application when Matric points scores and PTEEP scores are available. An admission decision is only taken once the PTEEP score is available. This means that if you write the PTEEP in Septemberyour result will be available in October and only then can a decision be made. Applicants who indicate Humanities as asecond choice must also write the PTEEP.

These are guidelines only and do not guarantee admission. Study offers may be limited for reasons of available capacity.

All applicants normally resident in South Africa will be required to write the Placement Test in English for EducationalPurposes (PTEEP), and the Quantitative Literacy Test (QLT) which are administered by the Alternative Admissions ResearchProject (see contact details at the back) before being considered for a study place in the Faculty of Humanities. The testresults will be used in addition to the Matric point score and will not replace the use of Matric points. Test results are notreleased to applicants.

* Admission Possible: If you have obtained excellent results on the PTEEP, you may be offered a place in the Faculty, subject toyour meeting the minimum subject requirements described above. Certain applicants, selected on the basis of these tests andon educational background, may be offered a study place in the Extended BA/BSocSc degree.

# Entrance to the first year of Psychology depends on how well you do on the QLT test. Applicants who do not score well enoughon the QLT will be required to take preparatory quantitative literacy courses before being admitted to Psychology.

## The Economics major and the PPE programme have a minimum subject requirement of a D in HG Maths. ‘B’ or above for SGMaths will be considered only for applicants from schools where HG Maths was not offered.
