PUBLICTRANSPORT@SG MOBILE

1. Since 13 August 2009, commuters including tourists, can access public

transport information on-the-go via handphone and PDA with the launch of

the mobile version of PublicTransport@SG or PublicTransport@SG Mobile.

By making it more convenient to access public transport information, the

Land Transport Authority (LTA) aims to help more commuters better manage

their waiting time, transfers, and to make more informed travel decisions.

2. To date, PublicTransport@SG Mobile receives an average monthly SMS

request of 4,000 for information on real-time bus arrival information, bus

services and MRT/LRT rail system maps:

i. Real-Time Bus Arrival Information

Real-Time Bus Arrival Information is available along the Western

academic belt (166 bus stops) and the 50 bus stops installed with

the Real-time Bus Arrival panels.

Commuters can enquire on the following:

a) The next and subsequent bus arrival time of bus services at a

specific bus stop,

b) Wheelchair Accessible Buses arriving at the bus stop, and

c) Bus stops where Real-Time Bus Arrival information is available.

Please refer to Annex B and C for details.

ii. Bus service route information

Provides information such as:

a) Bus service route details,

b) Estimated bus frequency (arrival interval between buses),

c) Time the first bus for a particular bus service is scheduled to

arrive at the specific bus stop,

d) Time the last bus for a particular bus service is scheduled to

arrive at the specific bus stop

iii. MRT and LRT rail system maps

Features both the system-wide rail map, and single-line maps.

Estimated travel time between stations is also available.

3. Commuters can retrieve information from PublicTransport@SG Mobile,

by simply typing in the URL http://www.publictransport.sg/mobile in their

mobile or PDA browser which should be Wi-Fi or GPRS-enabled. Normal telco

charges apply for the data request.

Annex A

LTA PUBLIC TRANSPORT TRAVEL INFORMATION INITIATIVES

In line with LTA’s vision to develop a commuter-centric public transport

system, LTA has launched several initiatives to help commuters better

manage their waiting time, transfers, and make more informed travel

decisions.

Aside from PublicTransport@SG Mobile, commuters can access public

transport travel information through the following channels:

• By SMS (handphone)

Real-time SMS Bus Arrival Information Service, available from October

2008 – provides real-time bus arrival information on bus services that

call at 166 bus stops along the western academic belt. This belt includes

tertiary institutions such as the National University of Singapore and

Singapore Polytechnic; post-secondary institutions such as Clementi ITE

and Jurong Junior College; as well as secondary and primary schools.

This belt was chosen to tap on a pool of about 55,000 technologically

savvy students who frequently utilize services such as SMS.

Commuters can access real-time bus arrival information for a specific

bus service at the selected bus stop or all services at the selected bus

stop by SMS.

LTA’s SMS service complements SBST's iris system, which was the first

to provide bus arrival time service via SMS. However, LTA's new system

covers both SBST and SMRT bus services, helping commuters to better

manage waiting time, transfers and make more informed travel

decisions.

Commuters may retrieve real-time bus arrival information in two ways:

i. For the next arrival time for all services at the selected bus stop,

send an SMS to 77722 with the five-digit bus stop code located on

the bus stop pole.

ii. For the next and subsequent bus arrival time of a specific bus

service at the selected bus stop, send an SMS to 77722 with the

five-digit bus stop code located on the bus stop pole and the bus

service number.

The real-time bus arrival information will be provided via an SMS reply.

The SMS service is available daily from 4.00am to 1.00am, which follows

the typical basic bus service operating hours from 5.30am till midnight.

Normal charges apply for the SMS request.

• By Internet

PublicTransport@SG (www.publictransport.sg), from October 2008 –

provides one-stop website on public transport information.

Today, the portal records an average monthly page view of 679,000.

Information available on the portal:

i. Interactive maps for basic and premium bus routes; locations of

public transport nodes such as bus stops, bus interchanges and

MRT/ LRT stations; and the Park and Ride car park locations;

ii. Bus service information, including routes and fares;

iii. Key Bus Services Maps for tourists and infrequent public transport

users. Each map provides pictorial information on key bus service

stops and routes. The maps also show MRT stations, significant

buildings, tourist attractions and major shopping malls;

iv. MRT and LRT rail system maps;

v. The Public Transport Guide, a comprehensive guide designed

mainly for tourists;

vi. Premium bus service information;

vii. Taxi service information;

viii. Real-time Bus Arrival information along the Western academic

belt and the 50 bus stops installed with the Real-time Bus Arrival

panels;

ix. Real-time SMS Bus Arrival (SMS-BA) guide;

x. Hyperlinks to related websites such as the Public Transport

Journey Planner, the Singapore Tourist Pass, and public transport

operators' websites; and

xi. Latest news on public transport promotions and initiatives

• At bus stops

Key Bus Services Maps, available from July 2007– provides pictorial

information on key bus services calling at 76 bus stops along Orchard

Road and Chinatown area as well as the routes they ply. The maps

feature icons on places of interest, MRT stations and shopping centres.

Real-Time Bus Arrival Information System, available from July 2007 -

provides real-time bus arrival information on bus services calling at 50

bus stops along installed with real-time bus arrival panels. The bus

arrival information is displayed on panels fitted at these bus stops and is

updated every minute.

Annex B

REAL-TIME BUS ARRIVAL INFORMATION

Real-Time Bus Arrival Information is available at 215 bus-stops (166 bus

stops along the western academic belt and at the 50 bus stops along installed

with Real-time Bus Arrival panels).

Accuracy of information : +/- 3 minutes

Frequency of information update : every minute

The existing system in Singapore makes use of GPS data from a bus to

predict its arrival time at each bus stop on its route. The system is fairly

accurate with the bus arriving within +/- 3 minutes from the time specified 8

out of 10 times.

To enhance the accuracy of the system, LTA has teamed up with IBM to look

into further improving the accuracy of real-time bus-arrival information.

During the one year LTA-IBM research collaboration, a prototype of this

technology will be developed for Singapore to be implemented as a trial on

selected bus routes and bus stops.
