Facts you should know In Synthetic Rubber Research, your activities would range from fundamentals to product improvement wo rk—wi th research that covers a wide range of synthetic rubbers—polyisoprene, poly-butadiene, polyurethane, butadiene-sty-rene, condensation rubbers, reactive rubbers, stereospecif ic rubbers, and others that are still confidential.
You might search for catalysts which give precisely known spatial configurations in stereospecific polymers. Or study emulsion vs. solution systems for their commercial potential. And you might tailor synthetic rubber molecules to meet un
usual demands of a new fabricated product.
In Organic Chemical Research, you'd start in one of four sections: polymeriza-ble monomers, rubber chemicals, organic process research, and bench-scale process research.
Working through basic organic research, you'd help keep your department abreast of new data on all essential rubber industry chemicals.
And wi th the bench-scale approach, you'd see your discoveries go into production fast. For example, the Goodyear

antioxidant plant in Houston, Texas, was built directly from bench-scale models without an intermediate pilot-plant stage.
In New Products Research, you could part icipate in advances in text i le sciences, most likely those related to text i les for use in t ires or industr ial products.
You might become a part of our expanding efforts in basic physics and engineering research where exciting opportunities exist in polymer physics, the physics and chemistry of adhesion, computer software, electronics research, radiation research, and instrumentation design.

about Goodyear Research: Your work could lead to innovations in polymer and metallurgical engineering, new plastic and rubber film processing equipment. You might have the opportunity to participate in new products created by powder metal lurgy or maxie possible by new polymer composites.
You are likely to be involved in the design and fabrication of highly engineered products. Some of these will be intended for use in the hyper environmental areas such as exist at temperature extremes and in space.
In Rubber and Plastics Applications Research, your work would form the critical link between the development of a new polymer and its commercial end product.
You might evaluate new rubbers and plastics for their product potential, refine processes, study cellular products like latex and urethane foams, or explore new PVC copolymers.
You may be one to find new applications for plastics. Or one to find the key to unlock the door to improved materials for applications such as crash pads-and bumpers which contribute to greater car safety.
In Analytical Research, you would conduct chemical and structural analysis on materials in order to provide information vital to many important Research proj
ects. You would use sophisticated instruments and computerized systems. Among them: the mass spectrometer that eliminates wet chemical analysis; gas liquid chromatography; ESR and NMR spectroscopy; x-ray fluorescence; and electron microscopy.
Polyester research and development The phenomenal demand for polyester fibers, films, adhesives and coatings has created a wide range of career opportunities for chemists, physicists and engineers. More than 100 scientists and technicians are engaged in all phases of polyester research and development in Goodyear's multi-million dollar Fiber Technical Center — the most extensive operation of its kind in the rubber industry.

In Polyester Product Research, new polymers are tailored for specialized fiber and non-fiber products. Other teams in this area carry out fundamental research in the chemistry of polyester and other polymers — testing, developing evaluation methods and studying fiber morphology.
The Polyester Process Research Department is responsible for creating the specialized manufacturing facilities to process new polyester products—to develop new, improved or lower cost processes and equipment for commercial polyester manufacture.
Extensive laboratory, bench and pilot-scale production facilities are available to study and improve present polyesters, to create new polymers and to provide technical support for the company's expanding polyester resin product ion facilities.
The finest in library resources As a Goodyear research scientist, you would share one of the largest collections of literature on rubber chemistry and technology in the nation. The Goodyear Research Library contains more than 16,000 volumes, and catalogs 450 technical journals a month.
Computerized input into the IBM 360
computer covering periodical and patent literature, makes it possible to retrieve technical information in a matter of minutes.
The rubber and polymer research capital Akron is a quiet, residential city surrounded by scenic suburban areas and 70 parks, excellent sports facilities and one of the highest concentrations of scientists in the U.S. The Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies, which is supported by all of the local professional societies, has over 4200 members.
The headquarters of the Division of Rubber Chemistry of ACS, and the Institute of Rubber Research, are both housed in the University of Akron.
The University and 13 other colleges and universities nearby offer advanced degrees in chemistry and other natural sciences. Many Goodyear employees are part time students.
A challenge in leadership Since 1916, Goodyear has been the world's largest rubber producer, thanks largely to its emphasis on research.
Synthetic rubber research has led to many man-made rubbers: discoveries like the Polyglas® tiire, Tufsyn® rubber, Neolite® compositions for shoe soles and heels, even artificial hearts.
It will keep that leadership through research for space and the military, medicine and commerce.
