Page 23: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Professional Identity

• Identity helps counselors establish pride in themselves and their job, and obtain knowledge and awareness of their roles and how to perform as a counselor (Emerson, 2010)

• Professional identity should begin to develop in the counselor education program and continue throughout one’s career (Moss, Gibson, and Dollarhide, 2010)

Page 24: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Identity

0 Gibson, Dollarhide, & Moss (2010) – There are intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions included in a counselor’s professional identity:

0 Intrapersonal Dimensions: self-awareness, reflection, personal definition of counseling and internal reliance of knowledge

0 Interpersonal Dimensions: interactions with the professional community (ex. Licensing boards, credentialing bodies, and professional organizations)

Page 25: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Intrapersonal Development

0 Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity

0 Counselors develop into good clinicians by practicing the same attitudes and behaviors they help to facilitate in clients regarding self-examination and self-awareness

0 Individual aspects of a counselor such as self-awareness and their attitudes about self-care, health, and lifestyle will affect their ability to effectively function in their role as a counseling professional

Page 26: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Intrapersonal Development

0 Important part of self-awareness is racial identity

0 Culture is an integral part of an individuals self

0 Racial identity development has been linked to multicultural counseling competency

0 Richardson and Molinaro (1996) purports that increasing one’s self-knowledge and self-awareness will lead to higher levels of multicultural counseling competency, awareness of one’s culture and values is a part of developing multicultural competence.

Page 27: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Interpersonal Development

0 New counselors learn about the culture of counseling through supervision from more seasoned counselors and through experiences in the professional community (Dollarhide & Miller, 2006)

0 Knowledge is acquired through the professional community, through classes, trainings, and conferences

Developmental Model

• Two basic assumptions

– In the process of moving toward competence supervisees move through a series of stages that are qualitatively different from one another.

– Each supervisee stage requires a qualitatively different supervision environment if optimal supervisee satisfaction and growth are to occur (Chagon and Russell (1995).

• Three influential models

– Littrell, Lee-Borden, & Lorenz Model (1979)

– The Stoltenberg and Delworth Model (1987)

– The Skovholt and Ronnestad Model (1992)

Wellness, Burnout, and Competence: Implication for Helping Professionals

• Counseling profession considered to be an emotionally demanding field and have been attributed to high rates of impairment, compassion fatigue, and burnout

– Higher risks of burnout have been reported in the counseling profession due to work-related responsibilities (Raquepaw & Miller, 1989)

– Research studies have shown that there is a high risk for burnout and job turnover during the first 3 years of work experience for professionals employed in human services or health care professions (Maslach, 2003)

• ACA Ethical Standards C.2.g – Impairment

– Counselors should engage in healthy self-care habits that would promote a healthy lifestyle and wellness

Personal Self-Exploration

As a Counselors-In-Training attempting to identify a guiding theory of counseling and psychotherapy, one of the most important aspects of that endeavor is often overlooked: their own personality and what they already believe about themselves, other people, and how to facilitate change. Therefore it is imperative that they understand as much as possible about their own belief and attitudes, and how these factors relate to how they will eventually practice the art of counseling. Questions to consider include:

• What are your personal beliefs about counseling?

• What are personal qualities, or strengths that you feel would be assets to you as a counselor?

• What are personal limitations or areas that you need to examine that might hinder your effectiveness as a counselor?

• What are your thoughts on cultural diversity? How effective do you think you would be in counseling clients who are culturally different from you?

• What are some of your concerns or anxieties about being a graduate student/counselor in training?

• What are your personal beliefs about human nature?

• What are your personal beliefs about behavioral change?

• Can people really change who they are or only how they behave?

• What needs to occur in order for people to change?

Page 64: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Professional Development/Self-Care Plan

• The importance of professional development cannot be overstressed, especially in a

field as vital as counseling. As Counselors-In-Training, it is imperative the they

begin to develop a professional development/self-care plan which will aid in their

ability to gain personal insight, understanding and overcoming biases, assist in the

development of their identity, as well as becoming an effective counselor

Page 65: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Philosophy of Counseling Paper

Several theories are utilized in counseling today. Counselors-In-Trainings will

examine their own beliefs and life experiences and determine which theory

best matches their world view. Counselors-In-Training will write an

integrative paper that articulates their personal theoretical orientation to

counseling. Their Philosophy of Counseling should emphasize an integration

of perspectives and an application of theory and principles to practice.

Counselors-In-Training will demonstrate that they know the material or the

issues involved through an integration and synthesis of theories, accurate

understanding of theoretical concepts, critical evaluation of theories, and

ability to apply ideas to practical situations. Rather than writing simply about

a theoretical orientation, show how this orientation has meaning in a

counseling situation. Apply your ideas to specific population with whom you

expect to work both in counseling and non-counseling. You may want to

apply your paper to teaching, working with the elderly, working in corrections,

working with adolescents, etc. Make this a personal and meaningful

experience.

Page 66: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Professional Counselor Portfolio

• A professional counselor portfolio is a collection of experience-

based materials and reflective information that demonstrates

various dimensions of the counselor's work, philosophy, abilities,

and attitudes. The goal is to demonstrate how diverse activities and

insights have contributed to the professional counselor's

development.

Page 67: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Biblio-Supervision

• Use of fictional literature to support the developmental process of counselors-in-training and/or supervisees

• Role of the Biblio-Supervisor

• Selection of Biblio-Supervision Materials/Books

• Incorporation of Traditional Methods and Techniques

Page 68: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Reflective Journaling

Page 69: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

What is AReflective Journal?

• Includes what you have done, what you have learnt and how you have found your day or week.

• Maybe you can include the thoughts of the experiences that you are having, the things that you have enjoyed, the things that you have done well and the things that you could have done better - which you can then reflect on.

• Helpful in terms of career and personal development

• Can be used throughout your career as a clinical training and learning tool

Page 70: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Writing in a Reflective Journal during Counselor

Supervision

• Keep a record of what you have done, clients you have worked with and theories behind it; but of course remembering to keep things, like names, anonymous – particularly if you take the journal outside of supervision

– mention what these experiences teaches about yourself, your preferred way of working and those people you do/do not like to work with and why…

– say things like “X happened, I felt…, I did… Afterwards, I thought… and felt… If I were to face this again I would… I learned… …about myself”

• Also, try and consider how you might deal with a situation that was particularly pertinent to you – for example being asked to assess someone who has abused their children, if you have (or had) children of the same age.

Writing Structure

and Models

Page 72: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Gibbs’ Model of Reflective writing

DescriptionWhat happened? Telling the story (uninterrupted). A small paragraph is usually enough. Go through presenting complaints, the model you used with a basic formulation. Prepare well for this part and and you won't waffle.

FeelingWhat were you thinking and feeling? What were your initial reactions?(How are you feeling now as you retell the story?). How do you think the way you behaved / felt affected the therapeutic relationship?

EvaluationWhat was good and bad about the experience? (why was it good or bad and what are you basing this judgement upon?)

AnalysisWhat sense can you make of the situation? Think about what this means to you. What implications does it have for your future practice?

ConclusionWhat else could you have done? (And the reasons why you didn’t?)

Action planIf it arose again, what would you do? (the same thing or something different). Is it a situation you expect to deal with again? If not how could your reflections be applied to other situations?

Page 73: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

John’s Model of Reflective Writing

DescriptionWrite a description of the experience. What are the key issues within this description that I need to pay attention to?

ReflectionWhat was I trying to achieve? Why did I act as I did? What are the consequences of my actions?• For the patient and family• For myself• For people I work withHow did I feel about this experience when it was happening? How did the patient feel about it? How do I know how the patient felt about it?

Influencing factorsWhat internal factors influenced my decision-making and actions? What external factors influenced my decision-making and actions? What sources of knowledge did or should have influenced my decision making and actions?

Alternative strategiesCould I have dealt better with the situation?

What other choices did I have? What would be the consequences of these other choices?

LearningHow can I make sense of this experience in light of past experience and future practice? How do I NOW feel about this experience? Have I taken effective action to support myself and others as a result of this experience? How has this experience changed my way of knowing in practice?

Reflective Writing/ Journaling in Supervision

• You might want to set a time slot free everyday (or week) with the sole purpose of making a journal entry.

• You may want to start of with specific categories which can be used to organize your thoughts, then expand on these, generating new categories as you get the hang of it.

• You may want to start out being more descriptive (merely noting things like what you are doing in your new role and how it makes you feel – without trying to interpret it), until you get into the reflective flow.

• Instead of, or as well as writing, you could draw -scrapbook style, if you find this easier (and you don’t have to be an artist, to do so!).

• It may be worth establishing boundaries to what you want to write: Are you going to write in your journal just for work related stuff, or for life in general (or perhaps both, since the two can often interrelate and affect each other).

Getting Started

and

Tips

Page 75: Facilitating Development Through Counselor Supervision · Intrapersonal Development . 0. Intrapersonal development comprises of self-care, self-awareness, and racial identity. 0

Reflective Writing/ Journaling in Supervision

• Ask yourself:

-What characteristics do I have that could prevent me from making the most out of this session, supervision, training, etc?

-What do I want from the session, supervision, training?

-How do I feel right now?

-What do I expect?

-What do I fear?

-What is the worse that could happen to me?

-What Strengths (or skills,) do I have that could prevent me from sabotaging myself?

-What qualities do I possess that which will help me in my goals?

-If reflecting on something that someone else said or did towards you or someone else (say, if you’ve read something worth a closer look), you might want to reserve your immediate judgments or reactions, by trying to gain some perspective on yourself and others and how you interact with one another. Ask yourself why you/another person might be saying/thinking/feeling that…? This of course can be done reflexively (at the time) or later, on reflection (which can help your reflexivity skills.

-What have I learnt, today – what knowledge (academic or otherwise) have I gained?
