Homework for September 18 - 22 Inside the homework folder, you will find a homework notebook. Assignments can be completed directly into the notebook, or can be completed on the worksheets provided, printed off, and then glued into the notebook. Homework books and folders will be sent home on Mondays. Please keep the homework at home during the week and have your child return the homework in its folder to school on Friday . Parents need to be actively involved in their child’s homework. Provide guidance as necessary, mark the work to ensure that it is completed accurately, and have your child do corrections. Home Reading It is very important for students to read for 15-20 minutes each night . You can use books from home, the school library, or the public library. You can also have your child read the poems sent home in his or her Poetry folder. Students will be starting RAZ Kids reading online in a few weeks. Your child may not be reading many words yet, and so he or she may be working on “Read the Pictures” by telling you a story for each picture. This will include telling who is in the picture and what is happening, but may also include details like when and where this part of the story is taking place or how the character is feeling. If it is a non-fiction book, your child can tell you what he or she has learned from the picture. By “Reading the Pictures” your child will begin thinking about the words that may be found on the page and will also start making connections to what is being read.

Homework for September 18 - 22

Inside the homework folder, you will find a homework notebook. Assignments can be completed directly into the notebook, or can be completed on the worksheets provided, printed off, and then glued into the notebook.

Homework books and folders will be sent home on Mondays. Please keep the homework at home during the week and have your child return the homework in its folder to school on Friday.

Parents need to be actively involved in their child’s homework. Provide guidance as necessary, mark the work to ensure that it is completed accurately, and have your child do corrections.

Home ReadingIt is very important for students to read for 15-20 minutes each night.

When listening to your child read, you can help with the three P’s: Pause Prompt Praise

1. Pause: If your child gets stuck on a word, PAUSE and let him/her try and figure out the word.

2. Prompts: Here are some ideas to help your child if he/she needs some extra help:

Make the first sound of the word. Look at the picture. What clues do you see? Now try the word

again. Blend the letter sounds together.

Think about what makes sense in the sentence. Look for little words inside the big words (chunking) Does that sound right? Does that make sense?

3. Praise: Give your child positive reinforcement for reading and persevering through difficult words. Say things like:

You are doing a great job reading! I know you are stuck, but give it a try I like how you…. (Be sure to praise their attempts and what

they’re doing well). Try and think of a word that makes sense in the sentence –

(substitutions are also very good)

During and after the reading, make sure to talk about the story. Have your child predict what will happen, answer questions about characters including how the character may be feeling or why he/she did something, tell his/her favourite part, make connections to personal experiences, and retell main ideas as well as some details. Get them thinking about the clues in the story both in the words and in the pictures.

Not only is it important that your child is able to decode and read with fluency, but he/she must also demonstrate an understanding of what is being read. Sometimes students may be able to “read the words”, but may have difficulty telling about the story. Encourage your child to look back at the pictures, or to even read part or the entire story again. When your child is able to decode the story, read it fluently, and demonstrate an understanding of what has been read, then he/she is ready for a new book.

More Importantly:

Be sure to model reading yourself. Read to your child. Talk about the story.

Printing practice:

Your child needs to be able to write and name the following preprinting shapes:

| ― O + /  \ Δ x ☐ (straight line down, straight line across, circle,  't', diagonal line down, triangle, X, and square.)Students need to work on letter size, formation, and placement on the lines. Please supervise your child’s practice. Assure that your child is using a correct pencil grip (with the pencil between the pad of the thumb and the first finger). As your child prints each letter, have him/her say the sound for the grapheme. Please note that short letters are 1 full space and tall letters are 2 full spaces tall.

Alphabet Printing Page –Option 1 - Print off, complete, and glue or staple the page into the homework notebook.Option 2 – Have your child print the letters of the alphabet in the

homework notebook. For each letter, print the uppercase and the lowercase. Leave a space between the letters.

Math:Number Search! This is an activity to encourage your child to find numbers that are related to them or that are relevant to their lives. In the middle square students can draw their faces. In the other squares they write numbers that are related to them such as the number of letters in their name, their age, address, their favourite number, their phone number, the number of people in their family, their birthday. Have fun with your child searching for numbers that are around them.
