Dear Friends, I scroll and click through The Forward (www.forward.com) and find articles on Israeli President Reuven Rivlin’s concern about anti-Arab sentiment among Israeli Jews, on the French prime minister’s commitment to fight anti-Semitism, and on the merging of two major Jewish publishing houses. An editorial calls for tough diplomacy in the nuclear talks with Iran. A columnist opines about what it means to “love Israel.” I toggle over to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (www.jta.org) and read about LGBT inclusion in Orthodox congregations and about a meeting between Rome’s chief rabbi and Pope Francis. The JTA links to other sites as well, including Kveller, Jewniverse, My Jewish Learning, and The Nosher. So much to read, so little time! I sometimes wish I could spend full days plowing through newspapers while indulging in a bottomless cup of coffee and an “everything” bagel, buttered. This would be a little taste of heaven, despite the inevitability of imbibing anxiety-inducing stories. Leading a well-rounded Jewish life requires keeping abreast of Jewish news. It is no less important than Torah, tzedekah, prayer, and Israel engagement. Happily, our people are expressive; they publish in abundance. A universe of Jewish news sources emanate from all corners of the Jewish world. They focus on a wide variety of stories and express the full spectrum of perspectives. (I read papers that are liberal and conservative. It’s important to do so. Reading opinions that diverge from your own may yield new insights.) I encourage you to find a couple of papers or magazines and subscribe to them. Many are non-profits, including the Forward and the JTA. They run on tight budgets. We are lucky they exist, and they deserve our support. May 3 is World Press Freedom Day. This year, honor this special day by supporting the Jewish press. In friendship, Rabbi Jeffrey Weill

In March several members of EHNTJC participated in the packing and delivery of Passover food for Maot Chitim. Our March 22 program, Report on Anti-Semitism by Amy Stoken, Regional Director of the American Jewish Committee, was also very well attended and informative. EHNTJC SOCIAL ACTION UPCOMING EVENTS
Our next CLOTHING/TEXTILE DRIVE is scheduled for the week of June 8th. Bring your clean clothes, sheets, towels etc. – even those with stains, minor tears, or just worn out. Everything we collect is repurposed AND EHNTJC is paid based on the weight of our collection. A triple win event – good for clearing clutter from our homes; good for the environment; good for our Congregation. (If you know of or belong to other not-for-profit organizations that may be interested in similar textile drives please let me know as we can also receive a referral fee.)
A SUSTAINABLE FARMING - ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM DAY is planned for Sunday May 31. We will have an informative program at EHNTJC in the morning and in the afternoon there will be a visit to a family friendly sustainable farm where visitors can learn more and even participate in farming activities. Watch for details soon.
UPTOWN CAFE service dates are scheduled for June 28 and July 19. We will be asking for volunteers to sign up soon so save the dates if you are interested in participating in this service activity.
MAOT CHITIM Rosh Hashanah packing will take place on August 23 with delivery on August 30 - save the dates and watch for details of the location in late July or early August.
As we are making efforts to increase our range of programs and activities we are hoping that others would like to join our Committee. If you are interested in being part of our group, please let the office know.

In Loving Memory If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a
most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a memorial plaque.
Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted in the Memorial Alcove in our chapel. On the day of the yahrzeit, your loved one’s name is listed on a tablet in the chapel alcove.
For more information or to order a plaque, contact Bill Gerber in the synagogue office.
HERE’S A GREAT WAY TO HELP THE
SYNAGOGUE AND IT’S SO EASY!!
If you shop at Jewel, purchase our $100 Jewel cards. You get full value and the synagogue gets money back for each card sold. Jewel cards can be acquired from Bill Gerber in the synagogue office.
