    EXTREME BRUNCH EATING CONTEST

    Official Rules

    September 21, 2013

    1 Eligibility of Contestants

    Any member of the Rensselaer community (students, staff, faculty, family, etc.) are eligible

    to compete. The event will run from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Eastern time). Contestantsmust register at the event table in the Commons dining hall in order to be eligible to compete.Registration will open shortly before the start of the event and close at the conclusion of theevent.

    2 Eligible Foods

    Any food served at the Commons dining hall during the event is allowed. Outside food(including Simply To Go meals) may be consumed but will not count towards the final score.Only food counts towards a contestants score; beverages are not counted towards the total

    score. Condiments do not count toward the total score.

    3 Scoring

    Each food is assigned a score according to a mathematical formula based on the caloriecontent of the food with a scaled correction for the caloric density of the food. Scores havebeen calculated in advance for each item listed under Saturday Lunch on the online menu[1].

    In the event that a food without an assigned score is eaten, a judge will first confirmthat the food originated in the Commons dining hall. Once this is confirmed, the judge

    will attempt to find a portion size and calorie count for the food. A nutritional facts signwithin the dining hall is the preferred source for this information, but if this is not found,the judge should refer to the Sodexo Nutrition Calculator [2]. If the nutritional informationstill cannot be found, the judge is to use his or her best judgment in assigning a point valueas a multiple of 10. This decision is final and cannot be changed.

    6 Calculation of Point Values

    Point values are calculated using the equation

    P = 10nint[

    30

    (C+ )

    log10

    C

    ]

    where P is the point value, C is the number of calories per serving, is the pointwise scalingparameter, and is the caloric scaling parameter. The two scaling parameters are to be setat the discretion of the judges; they were set to 1 and 0, respectively, for the point valuescalculated in Table 1.
