Concerning the projects: In each project there will be a research component and the student will be expected to read as much as possible around the given subject. The tutor will present demonstrations where necessary. If the student is any doubt as to what is required, he/she must approach the tutor for clarification. Students MUST bring the correct materials and must paint in class, although you will of course be required to finish at home what you can’t finish in class. The technical component, stipulated in every project sheet, will tell you how to go about DOING the project, for example: the size of the painting, the exact materials to use, where to obtain your references etc.

PROJECT BREAKDOWN

PROJECT 1: Self-portrait

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of how to create an abstract a self-portrait by using different mediums such as chalk, pencil, and/or acrylic colors.

Research Component:

The tutor will give a talk on the various approaches on making a self-portrait. Students will learn about how each different medium will create a different effect. The tutor will discuss self-portrait in the work of various artists.

Technical Component:

The project will be done on paper, A3 sized. New techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. After this, the students will create a self-portrait based on their understanding of the session.

Materials:

A3 sized heavy paper, pencil, chalk, acrylic colors, watercolors, brushes.

Formal component:

The final appearance of the painting will be abstract, and to achieve this, Students will freely use any of the above mediums to do a sketch, which later they will improve by using paint.

Duration: 2 hours

PROJECT 2: Emotions

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of how to express different emotions through art.

Research Component:

The tutor will give a talk on meaning of emotion in art and the use of symbols. The tutor will discuss different art work done by artists and talk about the conceptual and symbolic aspect of each work

Technical Component:

The project will be done on watercolor paper or heavy paper, A3 sized. New techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. After this, the students express different emotions using different mediums

Materials:

A3 sized heavy paper or water color paper,A3 sized canvas, pencil, chalk, acrylic colors, watercolors, brushes, oil pastels, colored pencils.

Formal component:

The final appearance of the painting will be abstract, experimental and to achieve this, students will experiment with different medium and write down the feeling and emotions, which corresponds with that medium.

Duration: 2 hours

PROJECT 3: Dream

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of how to create a painting based on the subject of Dream.

Research Component:

The tutor will give a talk on Surrealism and how artists are inspired by the subject “ dream”. Works by Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte will be discussed.

Technical Component:

The project will be done on paper, A3 sized. New techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. After this, the students will create a painting based on their dreams.

Materials:

A3 sized heavy paper, pencil, chalk, acrylic colors, watercolors, brushes., colored paper, glue stick.

PROJECT 4: Storyboard/ Collage

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this assignment, the student will be able to make a storyboard based on their learning of the past 3 sessions. They will be freely express their felling through making story using, symbols.

Research Component:

The tutor will give a talk on what a storyboard is. Different ways of creating a storyboard will be discussed. The use of collage and the history of collage in art will be discussed as well.

Technical Component:

The project will be done on paper, A2 sized. New techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. After this, the students will create a storyboard based on their understanding of the session.

Materials:

A3 sized heavy paper, pencil, chalk, acrylic colors, watercolors, brushes. Scissors, newspaper, glue stick, colored paper, markers

Formal component:

The final appearance of the work will depend on each individual and their decision on using different mediums and approaches discussed in the class.
