At about 1:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a gas explosion that destroyed a
Rutgers Place home.
A worker operating a backhoe apparently struck a gas line when removing an oil
tank from the house’s front yard
h the gas leaking, the contractor contacted Public Service Electric and Gas.
While the inspection was ongoing, the gas ignited and a fireball blew the house
apart.
The neighbor’s chimney was destroyed so the family was not allowed to return
home.
A Clifton firefighter was injured at treated at a local hospital was
released Friday .
