1?

I get asked a lot of questions as I am out and about the community. I appreciate this opportunity to answer a few of the most common questions.

“Is Fleet Farm still thinkingof coming to Monticello?”

First of all Fleet Farm hasn’t abandoned Monticello. They are landowners and view Monticello as a great place to plant roots. Like all businesses out there, the economy has made them stop, take a breath and make sure their timing ensures a successful end product. City staff has made numerous attempts to get their shovel in the ground, but at this time it continues to be a waiting game.

“What are we doing about the traffic?”Traffic has always been and will continue to be a headache in Monticello. The Department of Transportation (DOT) continues to try to push 10 pounds of car across a 5 pound bridge. As many of you can see, with the addition of Walgreens in the Downtown area, we were able to complete the first quarter of a new intersection at 25 and 75. By adding right turn lanes, we should see a better flow of traffic. Coupled with the upgrade across the river, by Sherburne County, getting traffic onto Hwy 11 should be an improvement. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we face many issues that we will continue to work on. Besides that intersection, we are looking at the Fallon Ave. overpass along with getting West 7th Street pushed all the way out to Hwy 39. These two projects will take a lot of pressure off of the Hwy 25 and Hwy 18 interchanges and allow local traffic to flow much easier.

“What’s up with FiberNet?”

FiberNet continues to upgrade its services and add channels. Unfortunately its success has created a backlog of customers that are eager to get the service. That is a good news bad news situation. If you already have the service you know that it has much to offer. We have received very positive feedback from the community after airing the local sporting events. We hope to televise many more games during the next school year. Being that it is community owned, your feed back is greatly appreciated. The goal has always been to offer the residents and businesses a world class telecommunications company that remains affordable. The City continues to receive many inquiries from potential businesses and industries looking to make Monticello their home. Whether FiberNet is the catalyst for this surge, I don’t know, but I do know we have much more to offer than many of the surrounding communities. The City Administrator and I have been making it a point to meet with at least one industry per month to look at their concerns and create an opportunity for dialog. We have come to find out that there are a number of them looking to expand in the near future. That is good news for all of us. We have some great businesses and industries right here in our back yard. That comes in kind-of handy when we are looking at $4 gas.I want to wish you all a great summer!

In 2009 Wright County Public Health received a “Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP)” grant and with the help of key community leaders decided to create our own local brand, Live Wright. Live Wright is part of Minnesota’s health reform efforts to control the rising costs of health care through community action to reduce obesity, smoking, heart disease and cancer. Wright County’s SHIP efforts are impacting local communities by helping them create a vision for changes in their environment that will lead to a healthier community and contain health care costs. We cannot sustain a pattern of paying to treat diseases we could prevent at a fraction of the cost to our health care system. Local communities and Monticello in particular has helped to build a strong foundation for our efforts in the future as we make it easier for people to be active and eat healthier. Live Wright has invested over $93,000 in the community of Monticello to help prevent chronic disease:

• Community Garden, Resurrection Lutheran Church (Liz Leitch-Sell)• Pinewood Courtyard Learning Garden, Pinewood Elementary (Andrea Holker)• Farm to School, Monticello Middle School (Karen Smith)• Safe Routes to School, Monticello School District (Brad Sanderson)• Park and Trail Plan Update & Create Web Promotion, City of Monticello (Angela Schumann)If you want to get involved or receive updates on Live Wright, visit our blog:

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer can lead to many questions. Sometimes the comfort you need is finding someone who understands your situation, hears your concerns and offers you hope. Having one resource, close to home, that provides this comprehensive care for you or a loved one, can help eliminate the questions and fears that often accompany a cancer diagnosis.

The Monticello Cancer Center understands how important it is to have someone share your experiences and that is why they have partnered with New River Medical Center to offer the I Can Cope and Look Good…Feel Better support groups. These groups offer community members, touched by cancer, the opportunity to connect with others facing the same questions and concerns. Experts in cosmetology, nutrition, and mind, body and spirit wellness, deliver informative presentations that allow community members to feel better, while forming new friendships with others, in a compassionate environment.

“Providing care that supports the whole person is the goal of the Monticello Cancer Center,” said Kathy Soland, RN, Director of the Monticello Cancer Center. “Community members who attend these support groups find hope for their future by learning from others who are experiencing the same concerns. Having these support groups close to home enhances healing by making it easier for family members to participate with their loved ones.”

Through compassion, state-of-the-art tech-nology, and experienced medical and radiation oncologists, the Monticello Cancer Center provides comprehensive care to support our community. To learn more about the Monticello Cancer Center’s support groups, call 763.271.2800 or visit:
