Vertical Gallery Exhibition Guide
The Vertical Gallery in the Manchester School of Art is to showcase the work of Manchester School of Art staff and students throughout the year.
This Gallery Pack is to guide you through the process of planning an exhibition in the space from start to finish.
Exhibitions will be organised and curated by the Academic Staff of the School. The Gallery has four levels each occupied by exhibition decks
The Gallery Pack must be completed as the first step in installing the exhibition. Technical Services will then meet the Curator and students to offer advice and work through any technical issues. The Technical Officer for Galleries will sign of the Pack when everyone has agreed the exhibition plan.
There will be a generic Risk Assessment for the Gallery but some installations may require an individual Risk Assessment to be completed by the Curator of the show. For more information on MMU Risk Assessment’s see: http://www.artdes.mmu.ac.uk/resources/healthandsafety/riskassessments.php
Information for Exhibitors
Work must arrive no later than 09.00am on installation day and be removed on the day the exhibition is taken down.
All work at height will be undertaken by the Technical Services Gallery Team.
Assistance will be given on low level installations where required.
Tools and sundries will be provided by the Gallery Technical Team, who will also advise on the best method of fixing/installing artworks in a safe manner.
All electrical items must be PAT tested before the installation day. The contact for this service is in this pack.
Individuals are responsible for insurance of their own artwork.
The roof terrace is subject to our unpredictable climate, it will host site specific artworks with individual Risk Assessments taking into account the weather.
Fixing and Hanging Code of Practice
The priority in hanging work in the gallery is the safety of visitors to and users of the space.
All fixing and hanging in the Gallery will be undertaken by the trained Technical Services Team.
Repainting, making good of walls will be undertaken by the Technical Services Team, the paint is a specialist colour, held in stock by the Technical Services Team.
There are some areas of the building that cannot be reached safely. Technical Services can advise on these locations.
Fixing and Hanging Information for Exhibitors
Hanging bars are certificated to take a maximum load of 50Kg/m allowing the suspension of exhibits.
The upper floors are suspended and subject to weight restrictions, a single operator “cherry picker” is in used to hang from height, and this is within the weight restrictions of the floors but does limit the size and weight of what it is possible to hang. The Technical Services Team will advise.
Window display rods are certificated to 5kg per bar.
The high white walls on the landings are backed with 18mm plywood, which will enable a good fix for most art works. All painting and making good to these walls will be undertaken by the Technical Services Team.
2mm wire will be used for hangings suspended at height. This wire will be supplied by the Technical Services Team.
Any work of weight deemed to be a potential hazard will be weighed to ensure the exhibit is within the weight restrictions of the equipment.
The exhibitor must hire out their own A/V equipment from the A/V store first floor Chatham.
High quality plinths are in use in the vertical gallery and must not be removed. These plinths are heavy please do not attempt to lift them unaided, please liaise with the Technical Services Team.
Art work cannot be suspended from acoustic panels or suspended ceilings.
It is not possible to hang work from the oak stair casings or walk ways.
We can project onto the concrete pillars but we cannot hang or fix to them.
Nothing can be balanced or suspended from the handrails.
Loading information
The ground floor of the building is concrete.
The raised access flooring in the Design Shed and corridors in the Benzie building will take a point loading of 300kg UDL 800kg.
The paving on the roof terrace is supported by paving support pads. The loading of each paving stone is 2 Ton; we are advised to spread any load across the pavers. The roof terrace will not support the cherry picker.
