    Implementing a mail in an

    organizationWhat is an exchange server?

The Microsoft Exchange serveris one of the most popular collaborative and messaging

servers in the world. It is used by businesses and organizations utilizing 2Microsoft

infrastructure solutions. The Exchange is basically the power behind all the amazing

    features of Microsoft Outlook.

Microsoft Exchange server was developed in 1993 when XENIX system was changed

into exchange server. The next edition came out in 1997 and was called the Exchange

Server 5.0. Since then editions such as Exchange server 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010have come out each better than its predecessor.

Today, the Microsoft exchange has the following two jobs:

The exchange supports IMAP, POP and web email clients including Microsoft

    Outlook.

The exchange lets users share information using either Outlook Web Access orOutlook.

Some of the features of20Microsoft Exchange:

Improved Assistant: Allows users to schedule messages by fixing the start and

endpoints. Separate messages for people inside and outside the organization can

    be created.

Instant search feature: The search lets you find information from any corner of the

    inbox using keywords.

New Features: RSS feed supporter, email scheduler, better preview pane and an

    option to view attachment.

    History of an exchange server

    Exchange 1.0

Windows Messaging, initially called Microsoft Exchange, is an e-mail client that was includedwith Windows for Workgroup 3.!"# 3.$, Windows %$ &beginning with '()*+, Windows %,and Windows "# . &/n Windows %, it is not installed by default, but a0ailable as a separateprogram in the setup 12+ Microsoft Exchange gained wider usage with the release of Windows%$, as this was the only e-mail client that came bundled with it. Exchange was included

throughout later releases of Windows up until the initial release of Windows %, which by thenalso included 'utlook Express..

#he original 0ersion lacked support of /nternet Email &(M# and '3+. #hey are onlya0ailable with the separate Microsoft lus pack.

4#M5 e-mail was shown in such a way that the message contained an 6.7## or 6.htmattachment, which had to be sa0ed and then 0iewed in a browser, as M( Exchange didnot ha0e support for 4#M5-formatted messages. (imilarly, e-mail that did not usetraditional message formatting was deli0ered in the form of text attachments with the6.7## extension, which could be opened through "otepad. #hese files were in turnsa0ed in the acti0e #emp directory and some sensiti0e e-mail could therefore ha0e been

made a0ailable for other users to see. /nternational characters were unsupported. (ome e-mail that was sent with a non-7(1//

or non-8!-bit character set, was shown in the form of text attachments, which had to besa0ed and then read in a web browser, with the browser9s text encoding set for a specifiedcode page.

Microsoft :ax, also called Microsoft at Work :ax &7W:+, was the fax component topro0ide (end-and-)ecei0e :ax capability; sent and recei0ed faxes were stored in thesame .pst file as other messages, a first attempt at unified messaging by Microsoft. /t also

Microsoft 'utlook became the professional-grade and more direct successor of M(Exchange 1lient, which still uses the .pst file type. ?ecause Microsoft 'utlook used thesame basic Windows Messaging profile, account, and e-mail settings &M7/+, Microsoft

Exchange users not familiar with it may ha0e thought that 'utlook duplicated thosesettings and made copies of all their mail while they were trying out the new Microsoft'utlook %8. #hus, some M( Exchange users could ha0e unknowingly deleted all their e-mail, thinking it was a copy, as Microsoft 'utlook did not ha0e any front-end feature tonotify users that it was actually using the same M( Exchange ! What is Mail

Electronic mail, most commonly referred to as emailor e-mailsince approximately %%3, is amethod of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. Modern emailoperates across the /nternet or other computer networks. (ome early email systems reCuired thatthe author and the recipient both be online at the same time, in common with instant messaging.#oday9s email systems are based on a store-and-forward model. Email ser0ers accept, forward,deli0er and store messages. "either the users nor their computers are reCuired to be onlinesimultaneously; they need connect only briefly, typically to an email ser0er, for as long as ittakes to send or recei0e messages.

4istorically, the term electronic "ailwas used generically for any electronic documenttransmission. :or example, se0eral writers in the early %8s used the term to describe faxdocument transmission. 7s a result, it is difficult to find the first citation for the use of the termwith the more specific meaning it has today.

7n /nternet email message consists of three components, the message envelope, the message$eader, and the message od#. #he message header contains control information, including, minimally, an originator9s email address and one or more recipient addresses. Fsuallydescripti0e

Edge #ransport rule conditions are based on data, such as specificwords or text patterns in the message subKect, body, header, or :rom address, the spamconfidence le0el &(15+, or attachment type. 7ctions determine how the message is processedwhen a specified condition is true. ossible actions include Cuarantine of a message, dropping orreKecting a message, appending additional recipients, or logging an e0ent. Nou can also install and configure the Edge#ransport ser0er agents on the 4ub #ransport ser0er to pro0ide anti-spam and anti0irusprotection inside the organiGation. /t is best practice to keep two separate ser0ers for 4# and E#roles.
