Think Safe: With the beginning of a new semester it is timely to remind students about always being safe and aware of their surroundings. Students tend to become a bit complacent so here are some simple suggestions to help your child stay safe. Some safety tips: Try to travel in company – meet up with a friend and walk/ride together. Walk on the footpath where possible, away from the side of the road. If no footpath, walk on the right hand side of the road so you face oncoming traffic. Wherever possible, leave space between yourself and the roadway. Be alert – earphones and headphones can considerably reduce your awareness. If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number. If a passing car stops nearby never get too close. Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you feel at risk. Always stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden from view (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid such locations. At night, always stay in clear view near lights. Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and police, noting type and number plates of cars and/or clothing or distinguishing features. Whole School Activity: Our Semester 2 activity is Chess and Checkers. Students play off together in their classes until they end up with 2 players (boys or girls) who are the best in Chess and Checkers. These players then play their grand final in the library at lunch time towards the end of term to decide who is the best player in their class. Some students will be selected to play against Forest Cres students later in the term. Foresight. Chess is based on planning, strategy, and tactics. This requires trying to predict and analyse the future. Circumspection. It's important to anticipate threats, which sometimes come from surprising places. Deliberation. Think carefully and check what you think your opponent might do, and what you might do next. Hope and perseverance. Chess games have a lot of ups and downs. Don’t panic, even in positions that seem bad, you can often still succeed. Your P&C: Your P&C had a meeting this week and the members continue to work extremely hard for the benefit of every student in our school. Of course they don’t just talk about fund raising – they have fun when they talk about uniforms, the canteen, their finances, the needs of the school and just generally about what they can do to help our school in any way they can. Anyone can come to a meeting - they go from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Your Special School Board Meeting 9 August 7:00—9:00 pm: Interested parents are invited to this special two hour open meeting to participate in Board Training which will give you more understanding about the functions and duties of the Board. It may even get you interested enough to put your hand up to be a Board member in the future. Faction Cross Country: Due to the poor weather, this event has been changed to this Friday afternoon from 1:30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. NAPLAN Online: Year 3 and Year 5 students are part of a Department trial to test whether schools are ICT capable and ready when NAPLAN moves to online testing. Students complete shorter versions of the four tests during Weeks 5/6. More information will be passed on to parents next week. Think Safe: With the beginning of a new semester it is timely to remind students about always being safe and aware of their surroundings. Students tend to become a bit complacent so here are some simple suggestions to help your child stay safe. Some safety tips:

Try to travel in company – meet up with a friend and walk/ride together.

READING EGGS WORKSHOP Mr Armstrong is available on Tuesdays at 3.30 to any family members/carers wishing to learn about Reading Eggs.

He is happy to navigate through the program to fully demonstrate all the lessons, activities and challenges available.

He can also assist with any questions or issues regarding Reading Eggs or Reading Eggspress.

Woolworths Earn & Learn is back and it is now easier than ever to earn valuable resources for your school. Last year more than 14,500 schools and Early Learning Centres benefited from the program, boosting supplies in classrooms, libraries, music rooms, gymnasiums and science labs.

It’s simple to participate. From 26 July to 19 September 2017, when parents shop at Woolworths they can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator or through an online order and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box, either at your school or at your local Woolworths.

Encourage all your friends and family to collect for Excelsior Primary School. Thank you for participating!

Artist Visits Excelsior Class

Last term we were very lucky to have Kiara’s nonna visit our class in B5. She is an artist. We learnt how to paint with water colours. We all painted a bluebird which is a real bird living in this part of Western Australia. We had a great day.
