Warehouses and the productivity dilemma

Each company with internal logistics knows the pressure to stay competitive. There is a limit to the extent productivity in a manual handling environment can be increased, without jeopardizing safety, precision and quality levels. Warehouse automation is the next logical step to stay ahead of your competition and reduce your costs.

hoW does Warehouse automation reduce costs?productivity gains and reduction of operational costs

You get the best return on investment by streamlining your logistic processes in accordance with your average capacity. A fully automated warehouse works non-stop, 24/7 if necessary, and is even able to increase your throughput capacity. You need less manpower and can reduce the number of shifts in your operations. Automation solves the dilemma of having to demand higher productivity from your labour force or increasing overhead costs by hiring extra workforce.

reduced carbon footprint

An automated warehouse is compact, requiring less building space. This means your goods are stored more efficiently and less lighting and heating are required. Automating manual tasks also leads to a reduction of your paper usage. Energy recovery on stacker cranes during braking and lowering reduces direct energy consumption by up to 40% and results in lower peak demand.

Business Drivers for Warehouse Automation

accurate forecasting

Automation increases the predictability of your internal logistics. You need less time for your work staff planning, deliveries are handled with greater efficiency and you know what stock you have available at any given moment.

tracking & tracing of goods

Warehouse automation allows you to track and trace the current location and status of your goods in the supply chain. This leads to fewer added costs from returns and more accurate order picking and deliveries to customers. Thanks to automation, materials are always handled in the same way and damage-free, leading to fewer returns and costs.

increased safety

A warehouse is not a risk-free environment to work. Industry has focused on the prevention of accidents in recent years, and automation has led to even fewer accidents on the work floor. Thanks to its precision and the reduction of human intervention, automation plays a critical role in increasing safety.

efficient material floW

An efficient flow of goods is of utmost importance to your business, covering everything from timely replenishment of stock to the correct delivery of products to your customers. Correct data, quality and accurate tracking and tracing are indispensable for your operation. There is no doubt that automation increases accuracy and speed of material handling. This in turn, leads to increased space utilisation and reduced product damage.

major benefits through supervision

Having a real-time overview of warehouse operations has major benefits. It allows you to keep track of the quality of your deliveries, meet the commitments you have made to your customers and to quickly detect system bottlenecks, in case it goes wrong. Your warehouse management and control software can be integrated perfectly with your ERP system. Warehouse automation gives you the ERP tools you need to adjust and manage your processes on the fly.

“Our automated warehouse has an infeed capacity of 600 and outfeed capacity of 400 pallets per hour. This is very important because ships must always be unloaded and handled within a fixed time frame.”

“our Warehouse operations Will be less flexible!”

Modular designed automated warehouses can always be adapted to changing needs. The modular structure and adaptability of your installation means you don’t have to set up extra manual processes alongside your automated processes.

“the investment is too high for us!”

It’s true that automation projects have initially been implemented in large warehouse environments, where lots of investment is required before a profitable ROI can be generated. But in recent years, cost-effective automation has become possible for most distribution centres and warehouses. Request a detailed ROI calculation first.

“our logistics are too complex for automation!”

Despite standardisation, warehouse processes have become increasingly complex. That’s why you need a specific solution to make maximum use of automation and mechanization. Our automation approach is an end-to-end solution, able to cope with hybrid and complex warehouse situations.

Three Myths about Automation

“The big advantage to Egemin is that you are dealing with experts in logistics. They are experienced in logistic processes, help you with every decision and give proactive advice on possible consequences of those decisions.”

Egemin Automation provides modular solutions for warehouse automation and distribution. These consist of top-quality equipment and components, material flow control, warehouse control systems and the E’wms® warehouse management system that links operations with your ERP software. Our warehouse solutions are based on four intralogistics concepts, which Egemin supports and implements from end to end.

automated storage

Our automated storage concept allows to store goods automatically on pallets, boxes, cartons and crates in warehouses and distributions centres. The automated storage concept is ideal for the following applications and industries:

High-throughput storage of full unit loads (full loads in / full loads out) for fast moving consumer goods in industries like food & beverage, distribution & logistics and pharmaceuticals Compact bulk storage for goods with longer time to market for replenishment of other warehouses or picking areas.

Customers such as sea-invest, agristo and nestlé have chosen for an automated storage concept from Egemin Automation.

Zone picking

Zone picking is a profitable order picking concept for applications with many articles, small orders with a restricted number of order lines and short delivery times. Order pickers are working in their zone without having to cover huge distances. This allows for shorter walking and driving distances for picking and lower distribution costs. Egemin’s zone picking concept is ideal for distribution centers with a large product range and fast moving products.

Customers such as ahold, d’ieteren auto and unilever have chosen for a zone picking concept from Egemin Automation.

automated Warehouses With agvs

Automated warehouses can be combined with AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) to transport goods automatically to and from the warehouse. With Egemin’s AGVs your floor space remains completely free making it easier to expand the system in the future. We also deliver individual AGV systems and integrate AGV technology on conventional VNA trucks to store goods automatically in warehouses.

Customers such as johnson & johnson, koopman and exacompta have chosen for an automated warehouse with AGVs from Egemin Automation.

compact picking

Compact picking is an efficient goods-to-man concept for distribution centres with slow-moving products, limited order lines and a great variety of goods. Outfeed of goods traditionally takes place from an automated warehouse. Goods are brought via a goods-to-man concept to order picking stations where they are individually picked. Compact picking leads to increased productivity and cost-efficient warehousing thanks to improved use of space, better ergonomics, shorter walking distances and optimised working conditions for order pickers.

Customers such as Zf, msd and alcon have chosen for a compact picking concept from Egemin Automation.

integrated picking

Egemin’s integrated picking concept combines automated storage, compact picking and zone picking solutions. Some warehouse and distribution applications are more complex in structure due to the nature of their distribution model. This requires order picking at various levels: full pallets, totes, boxes or individual items. These applications require an integrated logistics system allowing for picking each order in the most suitable way.

Customers such as johnson & johnson, beate uhse and vandeputte have chosen for an integrated picking concept from Egemin Automation.

“Since completion, Egemin’s installation has been extremely successful in both meeting and exceeding our expectations. It has enabled a vast reservoir of stock to be available to UK customers, whilst also reducing our pick costs by round about 33%.”

get the most out of your investment

The success of an automated system depends not only on good engineering and installation but also on adequate follow-up after commissioning: maintenance, repairs, updates and associated business process management. Carefully planned maintenance processes increase your system availability, optimise your costs and ensure that you get a higher return on investment. More and more of our customers choose a long-term partnership to plan the entire life cycle of their installation.

In addition to traditional 24-hour support and planned interventions via maintenance contract, we also offer advanced maintenance services such as:

Spare part programs Energy management Stock analyses Business continuity plans Remaining life analyses.

give a second life to your installation

Components of automated warehouse systems can become obsolete or are no longer in stock. If these components get worn or defective, this can lead to delays or long periods of inactivity. You don’t have to replace all components, and certainly not the whole installation, in order to maintain or expand it. Our system upgrades and retrofit solutions offer a cost-effective alternative.

Egemin Automation provides retrofits on its own installations or on those of third-party suppliers, on electromechanical, controls and software level for stacker cranes, AGV systems, conveyors and sorters. Retrofits offer the following advantages:

Higher system availability with fewer delays and interruptions Higher capacity Increased reliability No new capital investments required Increased financial return from original investments.

Dedicated life Cycle Services

1 – roi assessment and scope definition

Egemin Automation makes an initial assessment of your warehouse processes, based on best practices, and gives you an outlook of your ROI. We provide you with a solid business case for a go or no-go decision.

2 – buy-in of internal stakeholders

The decision for automation may be very clear and logical to you, but not to other company stakeholders who may be reluctant to change the way operations in the warehouse are performed. You can rely on Egemin to assist you with the exact information, guidance and arguments to gain buy-in from all parties involved – a crucial step in successfully implementing automation projects.

3 – scoping, modelling and simulation

Questions such as space optimization, resource allocation and process automation are defined and simulated. Thanks to project scoping and 3D-modelling, you get an exact view of the automation project’s impact and benefits. Simulation gives you a valuable insight into your future material flows. They result in very reliable estimates of capacities, intermediate stocks and transfer times.

4 – implementation

We propose warehouse solutions based on its own products, control systems and software. We are able to provide a total solution for your intralogistics environment, enabling us to control the implementation from A to Z.

5 – commissioning

We monitor the objectives that we promise to deliver at the start of the project using capacity and endurance testing. Because we know this testing will take place before we deliver, our estimates based on the simulation are accurate. We adjust, fine-tune and adapt training for various types of employees as a result of the delivery testing.

6 – life cycle services

We are one of the only companies on the market to offer you full-service contracts with availability guarantees. Installed base management allows for continuous monitoring of all the components in your installation. As such, wear parts can be replaced timely resulting in maximum system availability and lifetime of your installation.

Crucial Steps in Warehouse Automation

“Egemin was involved from the early start and proved to be a reliable partner. They helped us work out the concept, took care of the entire project from start to finish and delivered a full-service contract too.”
