La Asociación de Editores en lengua vasca, fundada en 1984, reúne a las editoriales que publican en lengua vasca. El objetivo fundamental es la promoción y defensa de la edición en lengua vasca, así como la representación, gestión y defensa de los intereses comunes de sus miembros.

The Association of Publishers in Basque, founded in 1984, aims to group together all publishing houses that publish works written in Basque. The association’s main aim is to promote and defend the publication of works in the Basque language, and to represent, manage and defend the common interests of its members.

Ayudas a la traducciónEl Instituto Vasco publica cada año una convocatoria de subvenciones a la traducción en dos diferentes ámbitos:

a) ayudas para traducir obras literarias escritas y publica-das originalmente en euskera a otras lenguas.

b) ayudas para obras literarias escritas y publicadas ori-ginalmente en castellano por autores nacidos o domi-ciliados en la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca a otras lenguas.

Las características de la convocatoria son las siguientes: un plazo para presentar y resolver la convocatoria, requisito de presentar una muestra de traducción junto con la docu-mentación técnica y administrativa, y posibilidad de obte-ner subvención de hasta el 100 % del gasto de traducción.

Ayudas a la promoción de la literaturaConvocatoria anual para agentes literarios (escritores, ilus-tradores, traductores y editores) para participar en eventos internacionales fuera del ámbito geográfico del euskera.

Grants for TranslationThe Etxepare Basque Institute publishes an annual grant call for translations in two different areas:

a) grants to translate literary works originally written and published in Euskara into other languages

b) grants to translate literary works originally written and published in Spanish by authors born in or resid-ing in the Basque Autonomous Community into other languages.

This grant call is made up of the following characteristics: one period in which to present and decide on the grant call, the necessary condition for presenting a translation sample together with the technical and administrative documenta-tion, and the possibility of obtaining a grant of up to 100% of the translation costs.

Grants to Promote LiteratureAn annual grant call for literary agents (writers, illustrators, translators and editors) to participate in international events outside the geographical realm of Euskara.

Aingeru Epaltza ha escrito en esta ocasión ambientes de aire montañero. Pero las botas, la mochila, el piolet y los crampones no son sino atrezzo de un decorado que sirve al autor para explorar relaciones humanas de muy diverso tipo: parejas desgastadas, familias a menu-do mal avenidas, temores hechos realidad, alegrías retardadas, ilusiones frustra-das… también breves momentos de plenitud y felicidad inesperados. El autor las desmenuza con su mirada certera y las rehace con su conocida habilidad.

They live for the mountain. Like cows anxious to graze they spend their days waiting for the weekend when they can put on their boots and start climbing. They are mountain fanatics. They know the surrounding peaks as well as their own homes. They head into the Pyrenees at least once a fortnight and during the holidays they make plans to travel farther afield, whether to Kilimanjaro, trekking across the Sahara or crossing the Caucasus. Aingeru Epaltza may have set this latest novel in the mountains but the boots, backpacks, ice axes and crampons are merely stage props which the author uses to explore a diversity of human in-teractions: eroded relationships, often-dysfunctional families, fears which come to pass, delayed joys and frustrated hopes meet with brief and unexpected mo-ments of fulfilment and happiness. The author breaks them all down with his targeted gaze and, using his well-known knack, pieces them back together.

Una banda, la de Arruti, que aglutina a una serie de mendas pretendidamente malvados que no dejan de sorprender al lector por su estupidez e ingenuidad. Un grupo social que forma parte de ese submundo transgresor que tanto gusta y tan bien describe el autor.

Travel writer Jon Arretxe’s latest novel is set in his home town of Ba-sauri. An attempted appropriation of a hypothetical treasure trove—the result of a robbery with a somewhat confusing end—leads to a series of events with an unexpected denouement. The cinematic plot brims with intrigue, confusion and lies and culminates in a chase that steps away from the typical American movie format. Ar-ruti’s gang brings together a series of supposedly evil individuals who never fail to surprise the reader with both their stupidity and their ingenuity. This social group is part of the transgressive under-world that the author likes and describes so well.

El hijo habla a su madre plenamente consciente de que no puede esperar respuesta alguna.

This novel’s main protagonist is a translator. He special-ises in translating words from one code to another. The same applies to his life: he has to decode it to understand the world. His work—which he loves—is the source of his problem. Particular episodes from his childhood be-come tangled up in his mind just as he is about to enter into a relationship with Marta. It’s then when his moth-er’s memory begins to deteriorate rapidly into the abyss. She was the only person who would have been able to unravel these episodes. Son talks to mother in the knowl-edge that no response will come.

Julia is a translator, Martin is a writer. Pilar and Abaitua are doc-tors. Both couples are in a process of reconstruction (or break-ing down) when a young American sociologist with a name from a Max Frisch novel unexpectedly enters their lives. Reluc-tantly, she will trigger multiple reactions which shake the very core of stagnant relationships to rekindle the flame of joy, desire and excitement for a new life. It is no coincidence that Ramon Saizarbitoria’s best (and possibly most intimate) work uses Max Frisch’s Montauk as a reference point. Like Martutene, it takes place in a location whose name evokes an indelible memory.

Bidean ikasiaLo aprendido en el camino

Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa, año 1993: un grupo de muje-res pide participar en el Alarde (desfile que constituye el acto principal de las fiestas patronales, hasta entonces y aún hoy exclusividad de los hombres). La negativa es absoluta. Así da comienzo una dura y amarga historia, a la vez hermosa y emocionante, de mujeres luchando por la igualdad.

La autora tratará de contarla al mismo tiempo que va desgranando refl exiones sobre lo sucedido. El dolor y la alegría son buenos maestros. De ahí el título (Bi-dean ikasia = Lo aprendido en el camino). La obra fue obtuvo el PREMIO EUSKADI DE LITERATURA 2017.

Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa, the year 1993: a group of women ask to take part in the Alarde (a parade that constitutes the main ceremony of patron saint festivi-ties, and which until then and even today are partici-pated exclusively by men). The refusal is absolute. Thus begins a hard and bitter story, at once beautiful and emotional, of women fighting for equality.
